Subject: BS: Help! Exotic vegetable From: GUEST,cookiless Lyndi-Loo Date: 18 Nov 03 - 11:48 AM I have been asked by a colleague if I can get English language (or Latin) names for the the following vegetables, which I believe are Asian. I know you are a knowledgable lot out there and I'm sure someone can help. The vegetables are Orara, Krala, Kurdo, Kinda, Raiya. I also had Methi, but I know know that's Fenugreek Thanks |

Subject: RE: BS: Help! Exotic vegetable From: GUEST,MMario Date: 18 Nov 03 - 01:11 PM given the "methi" - I've searched quite a few glossaries and cannot find any of the above words - I *did* find quite a few ingredients in languages where "methi"= fenugreek that the words could be corruptions of (Did this list come from a printed source or verbally or what?) for example - I could see 'karela' (bitter gourd) being heard as 'krala' |

Subject: RE: BS: Help! Exotic vegetable From: Sorcha Date: 18 Nov 03 - 01:49 PM Orara is broomrape (http://pi.cdfa.ca.gov/weedinfo/OROBANCH2.html) Krala-Mee Krala (Lukewarm) 6.25 Soft rice noodle seasoned in special soy sauce, browned garlic and topped with hard boiled eggs, crushed peanuts, dried shrimp and peanut sauce. Kerala-vegetable stew from south India Kinda-not found Raiya-bet this is raisa, plain yogurt with a chopped veg like spinach or cucumber in it. I asked Google....orig. lang is probably Hindi. |

Subject: RE: BS: Help! Exotic vegetable From: GUEST,cookieless Lyndi-loo Date: 18 Nov 03 - 01:51 PM Not sure of the language. I think it may be Hindi, but could equally be Urdu or any of the others. MMario I take your point about corruptions as these languages don't use Latin script they could very well be approximate spellings. Tricky isn't it? |

Subject: RE: BS: Help! Exotic vegetable From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 18 Nov 03 - 04:36 PM Urdu and Hindi are essentially the same language (Urdu is the Pakistan version, Hindi the Indian, and they are written in different scriopts) - but if these are dishes from Kerala, the language would probably be Malayalam |

Subject: RE: BS: Help! Exotic vegetable From: Dave Bryant Date: 19 Nov 03 - 10:51 AM Methi is specifically Fenugreek leaves as distinct from the seeds. It adds a lovely sort of caramel flavour to curries - especially dhansaks and other dishes containing lentils (dhal). |

Subject: RE: BS: Help! Exotic vegetable From: Geoff the Duck Date: 20 Nov 03 - 12:37 PM One thing to bear in mind is that when Indians or Pakistanis write the names they use for vegetables, there is often NOT a standard English version of the spelling of the Urdu (or whichever other language or dialect they use). The same goes for culinary dishes, the same "meal" is spelled differently in every curry house you eat in (e.g. Korma /Kurma ). Until somebody takes the anglicised spellings of non-english vegetables and puts them in a dictionary, everyone will have to continue to invent their own spelling of how the pronounce the vegetable. Quack! GtD. |
