Art - Was this announced somewhere? They are still listed on the website as just being nominated...and nothing in the "news" section of the Folk Alliance website either.

Congratulations, Sandy and Caroline!

(OK, Dick- for those of us who are not in the heavily populated areas where everyone seems to already know, how about a listing of their CDs and some liner notes or reviews? Given my income, there's no way that I can buy them all. I do know I love Sandy's cut on the Mudcat CD.)

Folk Legacy, Sandy and Caroline's work of the past 43 years (that's my lifetime!): a few recordings of themselves, many many recordings of other fine folks.

Great news!! Congratulations on the honor.

We should clarify the name of this thread, however. The FA has a separate Lifetime Achievement Award. Each year at the annual conference two artists are recognized for that, based on a selection from a committee.

What Sandy & Caroline received is a LEGACY LIFE MEMBERSHIP. They have received lifetime MEMBERSHIP in the Folk Alliance, and the really nice thing about this is that the members of the Alliance make individual donations to meet the goal, it is not a committee decision. Members of the Alliance nominate candidates and then the membership will send in their donations.

Art Thieme, Utah Phillips and Rosalie Sorrels have also received this honor, and Jack Hardy and Carolyn Hester have been nominated and are working towards the goal.

It is a great fundraiser for the Folk Alliance and a great way for MEMBERS to honor individuals who have given so much to us.

I finished my laundry finally!

What I was trying to say in the starting post for this thread is that CONGRATULATIONS ARE IN ORDER FOR SANDY AND CAROLINE PATON. Yes, their fans all over, fans of their Folk Legacy Records all over, fans of roots music all over, fans of Kendall Morse, Bill Staines, Hattie Presnell, Ray Hicks, Gordon Bok, Ed Trickett, Fleming Brown, Frank Proffitt, Anne Mayo Muir Graf, Lee Monroe Presnell, Hedy West, J. Golden Kimball, Jerry Rasmussen, Joan Sprung, Helen Schneyer, the Boarding Party, Jonathan Eberhart, Paddy Tunny, Bob and Ron Copper, Lucy Simpson, Richard Chase, Grant Rogers, Hobart Smith, Cindy Kallett---my fans too --- hell, FANS OF EVERYBODY ELSE ON FOLK LEGACY RECORDS as well. They've gotten together and secured this honor, this LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP in the Folk Alliance, for two of the best   folks to ever love, collect, preserve and sing this music that is the bedrock basis of what we do.

Thinking back, I now see that one of the luckiest and best things that ever happened to me was a result of my choosing to go to a Sunday afternoon hootenanny at the great Chicago folk nightclub called The Gate Of Horn back in 1959. Sandy Paton, freshly returned from England, showed us the musical treasures that he got from incandescent singers like the McPeake family and Jeanie Robertson. I'll never be able to thank my girlfriend back then enough for, among other things, hauling me over to the Gate Of Horn the first time ;-) to hear something called "an Odetta". I kept going back there until I heard Sandy sing about two months later.

People, just know that I love Sandy and Caroline Paton. I can never thank them enough for making me a part of their wonderful record label, for putting up with me, and for putting me up all those times I had no mid-week work when I was gigging/touring on the East Coast. No two ways about it, those were the best of times !

Love from us both. Nobody deserves a tribute like this more.

All our love,

Art and Carol

Congrats to you both! Well deserved!

Still remember how much I enjoyed your singing sessions in the chapel during Augusta's Vocal Week a "few" (maybe 10?) years ago. Great stuff! And you won't find lovelier people anywhere!

Art, you make me think how lucky Vaughn and I were - lost (by choice) in the wilds of Vermont - to meet Sandy and Caroline all those years ago. There's no calculating how much of an inspiration they were/are.And no calculating how many others could say the same.

Sandy and Caroline have pushed a lot of us, encouraging us to explore the wonderful world of traditional music. I feel like Sandy is a special mentor to me, always pointing me to other areas to look into, other books to buy and recordings to listen to. I suppose, though, that I'm sharing him with hundreds of people, and all of them feel Sandy is their special personal mento.
Thanks a lot, Sandy and Caroline.

Yes, it is official. Congratulations to Sandy and Caroline! This is truly a grassroots honor which makes it all the more inspiring.

Although they are humble folk, I'm sure they know they have made an impact on the folk world. But it is still great to hear that many people put their money where their mouth is and sent in a contribution. And the company they are in as Legacy Lifetime Members is nothing short of outstanding.

I suspect some Mudcatters were among the contributors. Thanks to them is in order, too.

I know of no one in the world of traditional music more deserving of this recognition than Sandy and Caroline. The recordings of Folk Legacy are an extraordinary gift to all of us; Sandy and Caroline's own performances are filled with the love and care they feel towards the music, and they are two of the nicest folks I know. I am honored to be their friend, and happy to add my congratulations and love.
