George Burns was the best God there ever was - at least in the first Oh, God movie. I got a little tired of John Denver in the sequel.

I am a big fan of Reagan, but I actually had the opportunity to insult (tease) him to his face.

In 1979, I was on a business trip from Boston to Burlington Vt.   I was wearing a navy blue dark suit. (before causual work attire) I checked in about 3 hours before the flight.   The checkout person asked me if I was with the federal government. (navy blue suit) I said no and wondered why she asked.   She told me that they had a treat for me as Reagan was going to be on my flight.

Even in 1979 I thought this a little weird.   So much for security.   They tell me 3 hours ahead of a commericial flight that Reagan was going to be on it.   When I got my boarding assignment 2 1/2 hours later, they asked me where I wanted to sit.   I said "next to Reagan" They said "your not supposed to know that he is on this flight"

We all boarded, and Reagan got on last.   He was actually very nice and midway through the flight came back to say hello and chat with some of the people on the flight.   We all exited the plane first as the media was waiting for him in Burlington.   I was standing next to him waiting for the line to get off the plane.

Reagan had told a joke the previous week that got him in a lot of trouble.   "How do you tell the pollack at the cock fight?   He is the one that bets on the duck.   How do you know the mafia is there? The duck wins"   He had to make several apoligies for that joke. So being the sarcastic guy that I am, I said to Reagan "Mr. Reagan, do you heard any more good jokes lately?"   I thought the look I got from Nancy would shoot daggers through my eyes.   He somewhat chuckled.    We than talked a few minutes (until the line moved) about a convention at the Sheraton hotel in NYC the month before and how a friend called him "Mr. President"   That brought a very big smile and a hearty hand shake.

It is not often you get to insult a president of the USA (and idol) to his face.

A lot further down the road toward being a compassionate and prosperous society?

(Bad answer, Bobert...)

But a very valid point, Bex GUEST... Back in the mid 70's if you had suggested that in 10 years Ronald Reagan would be elected president, conduct illegal wars in South America, drive the deficit thru the roof, starve out our school kids and one day be thought a hero... you'd have been thought insane.

But these thing happened and, yes, they did pave the way for the current crooks...

Fact is stranger than fiction...

beardedbruce - I think there are several mudcatters that do not vote for the party. They vote for the man when possible. If that isn't an option, they vote against the man. Why do you persist in the view that it is all about party politics? If I were Republican, I would be ashamed to have Bush representing me. If, however, a good man was to run as a Republican against a Democratic criminal, I would rather be represented by the Republican.

At least, in Canada, political aspirations are a little more transparent. If you belong to one party but, when running for election, you think you have a better chance of winning by switching to a more popular party, you do it. The same goes for parties. If two parties have a better chance of beating a strong third party, they combine and make up a new name. Politics stink and loyalty to one party or another is a sure way of voting for the lesser man. Each person has to be judged on their merit. Reagan in the White House was a hoax. He deserves no acclaim. He was a joke.

No president can drop the bomb w/o congresss' OK. Carter told Iran that if they harm 1 hair in the head of any hostage they will recieve a military strike the likes they've never seen. I can agree with some of the issues and then disagree on others that is the blessing of free speech. President Reagan, did end the cold war by bankrupting the USSR and yes he had his problems remembering the Arms for Oil but as a whole I feel he did an alright job. God speed Ronnie Ray-GUNs may you rest easy now. Mike

Here's the best quote I have heard about Ronald Reagan. Tip O'Neill (in total disagreement with Reagan beliefs and policies but friendly with him): "I have known every president since Harry Truman and there's no question in my mind that Ronald Reagan was the worst," said the old liberal giant. But, Tip added, "he would have made a hell of a king."

I nominate another name for the late departed---as noted in another thread on him---Reagan Rapture---which I would re name Reagan Redux.

How about instead of the Great Communicator ---the Great Glimmo, master of smoke and mirrors.    Ketchup and Pickles as vegetable designates in school lunch programs, clearing out the mental hospitals, Trees are responsible for Global Warming, lower taxes (so states have to raise theirs), ---the list goes on.

I don't deny his suffering nor his release from pain. But, all this hoopla is beyond me. His wife has updated the plans for years, according to the press, the government is going along with it---and think---he is not a sitting pres. who died in the line of duty---ala JFK, Lincoln, etc;( I won't mention who's boots he is not even worthy of shining ---if that is an expression) Sounds like a very nice celebration at the Public's expense---another Reagan legacy---debt.

The death of any one diminishes us all, but as a poster in the other thread said----a quote from a writer---I did not kill anyone but have read many an obit with glee.

current national attack of Reagan worship

I think it's orchestrated to give us a dead President to chatter about so we don't keep on discussing the fictitious one currently occupying the WHite House, his rationaslization for torture, the daily death toll attributable to his high-flown madness, and why he needs to be evicted rapidly.

Sort of "deus non catastrophe" thing. "Pay no attention to the giant mess in the middle of the living room floor". "See the nice dead President replays? Let's glorify!!" And a one...

Reagan knew how to play the Washington game. He was very good at it, and that's why he was so accepted within the inner circles that rejected the likes of Jimmy Carter, who never knew how much he was being laughed at (and worked against) by DC insiders and the press.

The press loved Reagon. He smiled and nodded and had great speech writers, and yes, he knew how to deliver his lines.

As far as his Alzheimer's...we'll never know just when it began to affect him, but I'd be willing to eat my shoes if he weren't in some early stage of it while President. But again, he was well protected by those around him, especially Nancy, who was perfectly capable of ripping someone's throat out if they got too close to the truth.

Do I feel badly that he's dead? No. I'd be a hypocrite if I said otherwise. He was a dreadful President, and if he takes over God's job, I'm willing going to hell...xx..e

I disliked Reagan, but I'll give him a few points for one thing. His actor training made him an excellent speechmaker. He didn't do well at impromptu, but he could nail the delivery of a well-written speech.

I think a lot of the current national attack of Reagan worship is due to the public being re-exposed to that particular talent and subconsciously (or consciously) contrasting Reagan's public speaking talents with those of the current resident of the Whitehouse. Comparing Reagan soundbites with Bush soundbites makes Reagan look like a great president by comparison. Not a truly great accomplishment since Calvin Coolidge looks like a great president beside Dubya, but enough to spark a bout of hero worship in some.

And if they really wanna put Ronnie's picture on some money, why not give another crack at a one-dollar coin? The Susan B. Anthony and Sacajawea (or however ya spell it) coins went over like lead balloons. If Reagan-dollar coins were issued the people who worship him could horde the things while those of us with a less favorable opinion of the man could just say "I don't want that" when a Reagan dollar is proferred, just like most of us have said to the SBA and Sacajawea dollars.

But you're not allowed to run if dead, at least in the Presidential campaign, I believe.

in many elections, one ends up voting against someone... usually while holding one's nose.

if Johnson hadn't gotten us so tied up in Vietname, would Nixon have gotten in?

If Clinton had not been such a scumbag, would Bush have been elected?

my point is that if either party had acceptable candidates elected, they might not swing the pendulum of public opinion quite so much to the other side.

so, see: it is all the ( whichever party you support)'s fault.

The original hebrew of "Thou shalt not kill" is a lot closer to "thou shalt not murder." The word used is of unjustified killing.

And a lot of people seem to hate themselves.

Do you Reagan/Bush lovers seriously think that we, the opposition, just got up one morning and decided to hate someone? If you would remove those blinders, you would see, just as we do, what kind of president they really were/are. Liars, and phony cowards. I don't hate republicans, I voted for one in the last local election, but I do hate phony, and Reagan and Bush represent both.

Thou shalt not kill.
Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
One of the most useful aspects of the ten commandments for moral relativists is the number of things they do not prohibit. They do not, for example, prohibit the marketting of toxic drugs, profiteering from firearms sales to third world countries or landmines. The generic proposition that Jesus postulated to replace the old Judaic law " do unto others as you would have them do unto you." sorts all this out. From Johnston to the most recent Bush, American Presidents have provided the rest of the world leadership in doing to others whatever is necessary to ensure they don't do it to you.

Actually, the truth is, God has been asleep during the whole era since Vietnam. It can only be that that has made it possible for a number of US presidents, including the current incumbent, to play God in his absence. The latest apparent re-writing of the rules regarding torture certainly revises the ten commandments.

You'd think he was the second coming they way people act regarding him. I'm sad for his family as any loss of a loved one is sad. But quite frankly, I lived in terror for 8 years. I think we got mighty close to a nuclear war with him. I always kind of thought communism fell AFTER he left the presidency because Bush I was not as antagonistic. Apparently, the whole country thought otherwise. As for a great communicator, flipping off smart-aleck quips instead of answering serious questions?? I don't think so. Clever maybe, but "the great communicator"? Get real. I think he deserves respect because he was an American president, but let's not make a saint out of him.

Actually, He has been wanted to quit for the last 700 years but just didn't have anyone to turn the job overm to but with the passing of Ronald Reagan, God has finally found someone capable of filling His shoes without missing a beat...
