It was a cosy little affair. She had settled in for the night, with her computer, a glass of mineral water, a warm shawl, a caftan and her fluffy slippers. There were all her old friends, and some new ones, meandering through the various threads, philosophising, debating and meandering. She enjoyed the pointlessness of it all, ideas, just for their own sake, and a great group of people, even if there were a couple of Alpha types determined to impress with their intellectual superiority.

she giggled here, sniggered there, but there was a sadness in her. Over the last few weeks she had noticed an environmental hazard, a cyber weed which had entangled itself through the threads like poison ivy - streaking through from thread to thread like a stubborn, determined particularly virulent form of Patterson's curse.

Poetry. Now, she wasn't completely averse to verse - she was even known to mutter of few rhymes herself on occasion, when the mood took her. But - a rhyme attack. How long would it last? It was thread creep of a new and sinister nature - the very nature of the site was being highjacked - this is a music site, she thought, not a poetry sharing forum.

Was this really a poet, she thought, or is it a political incursion by a particularly dastardly form of trolling - destroying the vibrant nature of the site by attempting to bore us all into slinking away. she noticed how many people hadjust walked away from particlar threads.

Now she beleived in freedome of speech - well, once she did. But she had decided to go to her local MP and lobby for restrictions on rhyme. It was all too much. I think I'll turn the telly on.

And so she did.

Falling asleep in front of the television, Averse to cursed verse dreams that she found her target. From the screen that appears in her dream, a head appears to float from the printed list of discussions on the page. It snarls and vomits insults, mouthing "I object to nasty, small-minded, mean-spirited trolls who object to anyone having any discussions they do not approve of.- If that makes me paranoid, oh well" .

With this confirmation that she wasn't imagining things, she shifts in her comfy chair and smiles in her sleep.

Not buying that, bruce. One does NOT have to take anything in the spirit in which you think it is intended-- first, it's hard to enough to read anyone's mind in person. Online it is much harder. To react negatively because one thinks someone else is being negative is merely feeding into and adding to the negativity.

Second, one is entirely free to make lemonade at any time.

This worry about others' worries that strikes Mudcat from time to time mostly reflects a lack of appreciation for what Mudcat can be, positively--perhaps a lack of direct experience with its more postivie possibilities. It's just a downward negative spiral one is free to turn aside from anytime. I'm inviting you to turn outwards or upwards, that's all.

WHen I am personally attacked for expressing my view, when I am expected to accept whatever is given as "fact" without any supporting evidence, and , when my statements are challanged, not because there is any evidence to the contrary but because the supporting facts are not from the properly liberal source, and outright lies are being told, I cannot get into your philosophy of looking for the positive side. I am merely human, not an angel. If you want to stop this, feel free- I am only reacting to provocation from a few shit-for-brains around here. But I have noticed that the "minority" opinion never seems to get any support, just thet we are told to accept whatever we get, and smile. I don't have a problem that many may disagree with me- I do object to being attacked and then told I should not react, while the attack is never even commented on. Freedom of speech is only valid when you support those you disagree with: To demand it for yourself and deny it to those on the other side is the worst form of hypocracy.

This thread was a personal attack upon me- When I see that others are defending me, I will not need to react- until then, I will not tolerate lying. bigoted, narrow-minded people making comments about me without reply.

Hmmmmm, what is Patterson's curse? Catspaw laying down his particular form of wisdom, humour and flatulance? Micca giving us another set of song lyrics to a song we only thought we knew? I'd be interested to know, being half Patterson myself.

We all are on the watch out........don't want to be taken to task by a troll, don't want to contribute to a thread that might be a troll in diguise, don't want to hang our thoughts and feelings out there where a troll can find them and mock them.......

It lessens our response, it makes us cautious when we should be amongst friends.........it also makes us question what we are writing here for history to examine.......and question whether it is opinion or fact.........I will go on record as saying I quite like trolls.......they make us think about how we respond in a way that no other catalyst could induce.

BeardedBruce, I'm not the one posting saccharin poetry by the yard. The writing is on the wall, but I'm not surprised you can't recognize yourself in this description because you're just too dense. You may speak English and string words together grammatically, but your reasoning is amazingly shallow and you have all of the charm of a festering boil when you decide to make a stand on any given thread.

People have given ample and consistently solid supporting material to show why your arguments are nonsense. They've gone out of their way to explain clearly and in great detail what the problems are with the argument you're presenting. Their sources are mainstream and reliable (do you equate "reliable" with "liberal?"). Yet you bluster along and continue the argument by ignoring the facts and stating and restating your opinion. If someone doesn't repeat and respond to every point you try to make, you come up with the obnoxious and self-serving rejoinder along the lines of "since you didn't respond to this point I will presume that you think I'm right."

You presume way too much, fella, and you test the patience of a lot of good people who have been polite to you far longer than you deserve.

Some have given reasonable discussion, but you have not. To those who present reasonable discussion, I will concede what the facts show- but I expect the same courtesy from them, when my facts are presented.

I considerr all the facts as presented by reasonable people. Perhaps I should use your own SRS standard, and throw out anything that comes from a source I might not agree with, but I try to balance the ovbvious bias of all sources byt looking at the facts, not just my opinion of what should be.

This may be true- when someone like you responds to a request for facts with only personal attack, and statements that any fact that is not from the "proper" source does not even need to be looked at, I am tempted to believe that you have no real arguement, and are conceding by your actions.

I had presumed that one might be able to have an adult discussion of the facts. It seems that I am mistaken in your case- If this has tested anyone else's patience, I regret that, and apologize to them.

Patterson's Curse is a suspiciously Australian reference: a European plant Echium (mostly) plantagineum, run feral in Australia and regarded as a noxious weed - poisonous to stock, in Eastern Australia (where its introduction is blamed on a 19th century grazier R.E. Patterson) ... yet regarded as good drought fodder in South Australia, where it is called Salvation Jane!

I don't actually wish to use this to lay claim to our "GUEST:averse ... and worse" ... but I may have to dodge a bit!

I used to love this site because
No matter what the topic
Friends just talked to friends
