Wow, what a flashback. I used to have a Betsy McCall Paper Doll set that I LOVED as a 4 year old. Somehow it was affiliated to the McCall's Magazine. The Paper Doll set came with a sing along record and a lyric sheet I think. Or else I had a Betsy McCall paper doll set I played with as I listened to some song collection record with a song sheet! It was about 1964. Molly Malone is one of those I remember from the record! I remember..."She wheeled her wheelbarrow through streets broad and narrow singing cockles and muscles alive alive oh...alive alive oh alive alive on singing cockles and muscles alive alive oh." I cannot remember where her name came into it! Or other parts of it!

Click here for MOLLY MALONE at The Library of Congress American Memory Collection. This is the 1870 song with words by Thomas Cory and music by J. Gaspard Maeder. It seems to have nothing in common with the "cockles and mussels" song except the name and the Irish theme—but it's worth looking at for the beautiful engraving of an Irish harp on the cover, and the lettering—if you like that sort of thing.

I swaer I'm not hallucinating, but I recall a fragment of a song heard on the radio in the late 1940s. It was sung in an imitation Japanese accent and all I can recall is the tune (which was 'Molly Malone') and bits of words:

'Twas in Yokohama,
I met this hot nana,
She sold radishes, octopus, rice and dried squid,
This cute little cookie,
Whose name was Suzuki,

Now who on earth wrote and recorded that and doers anyone know all the words?

Haha after a bit of digging on here it seems she's lovingly known as the 'tart with the cart'!! I hadn't heard of that nickname until today! (Is that since the statue in Dublin, or a more traditional nickname?!)

A song "Molly Malone" was published in NY by Pond & Co., 1870. This 'sweet Molly' never resorted to peddling mussels. Words by Thomas Cory, Music by J. G. Maeder.

"Sweet Little Molly Malone" came out in 1885. "Mollie Malone" appeared in 1875.

These are not the same song. Or Molly had several persona.

My references say Molly Malone was written by James Yorkston of Scotland, arranged by Edmund Forman, and published by Francis Brothers and Day, London, 1884.

I remember learning a very simple 'cockles and mussles... alive alive-oh' song about Molly Malone about the time I learned to talk!!! It basically tells of her selling cockles and mussles 'up the streets broad and narrow' and then dies of a fever. Having recently read an article about Molly Malone being a bit of a good-time-girl, so to speak, I wondered what versions everyone else sang, and if there are any other songs/stories about her?
