To Tannywheeler....the most important thing he can do with his life is to continue to be a wonderful father, husband and grandfather and to continue BEING. Voice or no voice, stories or no stories. I'm just glad he's still here even if he can't talk.

That said, I hope the op works because I know how happy it will make him.

Just as long as you keep understanding that telling story--musically, verbally, or in writing--is THE most important thing you can do with your life.....You can teach others to recognize and/or give love & understanding that way, as well as give both yourself. Keep telling story whatever way is given to you to do so. But I certainly recognize that frustration of not being able to use your own voice can make for reeeeeeeelllll stress & pressure. Surely there are some good books on voice therapy that he could read and start out very slowly with those exercises.

Misuse seems dangerous to me realizing vocal cords are muscles and muscle memory is important. Otherwise, those cords may become "cords of wood" and not chords of music.

Basic solfege would work, but stay away from yodelling for a spell.

We got back yesterday from the post-op checkup in Albany.

His surgeon is very pleased with his progress but the false vocal chords are still tending to cloak the efforts of the true chords. Somehow Kendall has got to ease the tension in the area to let the vocal chords do their work. He's talikng about getting VERY drunk to see if that works so New Year's Eve could be interesting!

Shapshay suggested that, in a couple of week's time, Kendal should start with a voice therapist again and we're looking for one that takes Medicare. The one he has been seeing doesn't and costs the earth which, right now, we aren't in a position to pay. However, we have time to look for someone.

We have to go back to see Shapshay, probably when I get back from the UK in March, weather permitting. He's talking about the possibility of 'fine tuning' his work, although we're not sure what more he can do and, more to the point, what Kendall wants to go through. That will be his decision - I will stand back and leave him to sort that one out.

Many thanks to Peter and Kris Cady for putting us up on Wednesday night - it made for a much easier journey to Albany for the 11.20 appointment.

Okay to Giok's defense:

His wit was dry (I did not get it either). However, since I mentioned Olive Oyl he referenced her acute angina (I cannot verify she has one) and thus the joke that no one but Giok got. However, I am glad we got verification from the source.

I explained a bit of dry wit in another thread and got my hand slapped because I was told to explain it, ruined it. Some people need 'splaining to in order to "get" wit or a joke. It this case we all needed an explanation and then it was funny.

I wonder if Popeye (since he ate his spinnish) ever knew if Olive Oyl had acute angina? I know from the last Popeye cartoon I saw when I was a kid 40 plus years ago, Brutus never made it to first base, or did He! Maybe Olive was getting some on the side. The plot thickens.

Are Popeye cartoons available on DVD?!

Well, first things first, there are good thoughts flying out to the lot of you (Sins too), and the #$@!-reduction candle series starts up tonight when I get home from work.
You think it's badd drinking coffee and reading this thread, just try sneaking a look at it at work with nobody knowing.
And yes, I'm another former worker at Albany Medical Center. I'm glad they did a good job, and that the doctor was straight up that the operation *should* do something.
Last, but most important, I'm just glad you're alive and well, Kendall. Everything else is just details.
