Again I am seeking the words of a song. Does anyone out there know the complete words and tune? All I've been given are the words "Hail Glorious St. Patrick, Dear Saint of our isle" A friend has asked me to try and find the complete song for her. Anyones help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch and Happy St. Patrick's Day tomorrow.

Hi Gerry we used to sing that song as a hymn in catholic school in England. I can't remember the words but I will ask my fiddler. He still goes to church.

How did I stumble into this after all these years?

However, there is currently an earnest discussion in the forum on the website of the Society of St Gregory (www.ssg.org.uk). The usual tune (St Patrick) allows of a chorus using the last line of the verse ("On Erin's green valleys, on Ein's green valleys, on Erin's green valleys look down in thy love.") in the manner of "Pleasant and Delightful" but! do we sing the last line of each verse in its turn (as in P and D), or always the last line of the first verse at the end of each of the others? (Angels on the head of a pin, anyone?)

A bit of cultural cross-fertilisation would be interesting, if anyone knows how it is usually sung.

In passing, in case anyone is still searching, there are a couple more verses:

at verse 3:

In the war against sin, in the fight for the faith,
Dear saint may thy children resist unto death;
May their strength be in meekness, in penance, in prayer,
Their banner the cross which they glory to bear.

then verse 4 as 3 above, finishing with 5:

Ever bless and defend the sweet land of our birth
Where the shamrock still blooms as when thou wert on earth
And our hearts shall yet burn wheresoever we roam
For God and St Patrick and our native home.

(I hold no brief for either the theology or the taste of these.)

Come to think of it, you could sing it to P and D (just about).

I have the tune (which is apparently trad) but I don't know how to pass it on. I could scan and produce a pdf, but what then?

However, when I try to play the MIDI of Hail, glorious St Patrick, I get a message that there's not enough memory to do it. I consider that a little strange, because I have a new computer and lots of memory.

Every year, I phone my mother on St. Patrick's day and sing this beautiful anthem with her. She's well into her seventies and never misses a note. As clear and as lovely as when I was a child.
I start my St. Patrick's day gigs with this hymn, A-Capella.

If you want to hear it, there's a great album of all those Irish hymns, Faith of Our Fathers.

It has Hail Glorious St Patrick (which my mother always blaimed for the fact that it usually hails and rains on the parades on St Patrick's Day), and other camp classics such as Holy God, We Praise Thy Name, Salve Regina, The Bells of the Angelus, and the gloriously pagan Queen of the May - "Bring flowers the fairest, bring blossoms the rarest, from garden, and valley, and woodland and vale; our glad hearts are swelling, our glad voices telling, the praise of the loveliest flower of the May..."

We've always sung it repeating the last line of the verse.

And it's "Bring flowers of the fairest".

"...all those Irish hymns" - it's an Irish record, but the hymns are Irish in the same sense as used in the Ossian booklets, "Folksongs and Ballads popular in Ireland".

Pretty popular elsewhere too - striking to see how when they get sung at Mass the older members of the congregation put down the hymn books, because they don't need them, and the volume and enthusiasm of the singing increases noticeably.

Love that hymn.
So I called my mother yesterday and sang "Hail Glorious St Patrick" once again. She's a great wee singer.
Played a six hour "St Patrick's Day" gig in a cowboy shop, last night. Place was packed all night. I don't drink when I play so I went up for a pint when I was done.
They turned me down flat!
I'd missed last orders.
Freakin' cowboys!
Sorry about the language, ladies. I'm still fuming.
My first St. Patrick's Day without a pint!!!
