Subject: RE: BS: BEER,BEER and More BEER From: Georgiansilver Date: 20 Jan 07 - 06:17 PM Tonight at Faldingworth Live I had an 'Old Speckled Hen' and thoroughly enjoyed it...Went for a second bottle and it was sold out so I was left with a choice of 'Pedigree' or 'Piddlehole' and chose the latter....sadly I believe it had been passed by the management. |
Subject: RE: BS: BEER,BEER and More BEER From: Folkiedave Date: 20 Jan 07 - 07:44 PM I have never bothered about the name. Now the taste, that's a different matter entirely. Come to Sheffield, do a few of the pubs on the Don Valley Real Ale trail. Go and watch Sheffield United in the afternoon!! Great Saturday........ |
Subject: RE: BS: BEER,BEER and More BEER From: jimlad9 Date: 31 Jan 07 - 05:48 AM I used to frequently frequent a nearby pub were the phrase 'The customer is always right' did not apply. A fellow drinker had the temerity to ask the barman to change his pint because the beer was 'cloudy'. The barman said "there is nowt wrong with that beer, its crystal clear". Then as an after thought he added " Its the glass, its filthy !" |
Subject: RE: BS: BEER,BEER and More BEER From: Scrump Date: 31 Jan 07 - 06:30 AM Well, Mr Fox, I've enjoyed pints of Dog's Bollocks, and other 'rudely-named' ales myself. I just think the names probably appeal to a limited market of 'hardcore' ale drinkers (like me and presumably you), and they may be alienating a lot of other people who might be otherwise interested in trying them. It just seems sometimes that the brewers of some ales are deliberately trying to stop people drinking their ales, which seems odd. To me the name doesn't matter if the ale tastes good. What's wrong with names like Bitter, Best Bitter, Mild, etc.? It just seems brewers are desperate to think or more and more daft names these days. I think I'm probably just being a Grumpy Old Man though! :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: BEER,BEER and More BEER From: Cluin Date: 01 Feb 07 - 09:57 AM I was watching "Daily Planet" on the Discovery Channel a few days ago and they reported on this study. Apparently they added a few drops of balsamic vinegar to a glass of beer then had several people try it and compare it with a glass of the same beer without vinegar. Those who knew which glass contained the added vinegar preferred the beer without it by a large majority. Those who didn't know which glass contained the added balsamic vinegar preferred the taste WITH it added by an almost opposite majority. The experiment was set to investigate the effect that foreknowledge of the added ingredient would have on taste preference. So last night I poured myself a glass of Keith's and added a few drops of balsamic vinegar. I found I did indeed like the taste of it in my beer. I don't know if it improved it or not, but it did make a nice change and I'll probably do it again, especially with some of the blander tasting beers. My suggestion: try it yourself and see if you don't like it. p.s. I think it might actually have had a beneficial effect on that slightly bloated feeling you get after a beer or two as well. |

Subject: RE: BS: BEER,BEER and More BEER From: Scrump Date: 01 Feb 07 - 10:01 AM What a long link ;-) A small amount of acidity from the vinegar might well be pleasant in a bland beer as you say. It would have a similar effect to adding lime juice to lager or drinking Mexican beer with a slice of lemon. I might well try it sometime... |
Subject: RE: BS: BEER,BEER and More BEER From: Cluin Date: 01 Feb 07 - 12:53 PM I used to add a pinch of salt to my draught lager for more taste back in the days befor I had to eliminate all extra NaCl from my intake. |
