From: lisa null
Date: 04 Mar 07 - 02:55 PM

Hi:

Does anyone out there happen to have the lyrics to "She;s Gone With The Hippies and the Beatniks Oh" or know who wrote it and where it might be found?

I'd like to learn it --- a nice song from my rapidly aging generation!

Lisa

If you search for Child #200, you will find several parodies along with the regular versions.

This was a much requested song in the late John Dwyer's very large repertoire. I think he said that he learned it from a singer in Vancouver, B. C., but where it came from before that, I have no idea. Obviously it was an idea whose time had come.

As Susan says, it's a parody of Child #200, written by Miles Wootton.

From: GUEST

I know it as The Hippies and the Hairies O

with the words as follows:

It was late one night, Mr. Jones came home
On the 5:47 from London O
He was rich and fat, wore a big bowler hat
And he hated the hippies and the hairies o

He walked in through his mock Tudor door
And he called to his wife, "Well I'm home dear o
I'm late I'm afraid, the train was delayed
It must be the hippies and the hairies o"

Scarecely had he stepped inside
when the au-pair ran to meet him o
saying "madame is not 'ere, she is gone I fear
Away wi' ze 'ippies an' ze 'airies o"

"O bring to me my MG BGT
for the Daimler was never so speedy o
And I will drive 'til I find her alive
Or dead with the hippies and the hairies o"

So he drove East and he drove West
Until he came to a field near Knebworth o
and there she did stand, with a joint in her hand,
she was getting into Hawkwind with the hairies o

"O What makes you leave your house and car
Your washing machine and your stereo
Your children three, not to mention me
To go with the hippies and the hairies o?"

"O What care I for my house and car
My washing machine and my stereo
For a fuse I've primed and the whole lot's timed
To explode in the middle of the Wogan show"

I'll see if I can find Dad's verses and add them to the thread. I am sure I have it on tape somewhere, I don't know if they're all written down where I can find them easily.

The singer from Vancouver was Jon Bartlett...I heard him do this at the USA "National Folk Festival" in about 1977. I shamelessly stole it, and have sung it at odd times ever since.

(Lisa...you probably heard it from me..)

Miles Wootton rewrote it a couple of times - Hippies and Beatniks was the earliest ! I believe there is a CD of some of Miles old stuff in
the pipeline !

His beard is dark brown, Bill. So is my hair. I tell people, "This is what true dark brown really looks like."

Sorry open mick ....it is a play....an innocent joke....something that ten years ago ALL within the web would have recognized YOUR brillant (sarcastic) reply....and also my (my innuendo and swift counter)....

Given the current American parlaied positions...my reparie' was counter with a deleation.

Sincerley,
Gargoyle

I have no problem with "clones" ... I just wish ALL could pass a "high school exit exam",,,,or be well versed in verses.
