Subject: RE: BS: Anyone seen Shaun the Sheep? From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 14 Mar 07 - 06:56 PM well, JennyO I was thinking you could record each episode for me, before you go to bed, & I'll watch the episodes when I visit! |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone seen Shaun the Sheep? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 13 Mar 07 - 05:01 PM Sorry, brain freeze - I meant 3.45pm! LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Anyone seen Shaun the Sheep? From: Scrump Date: 13 Mar 07 - 11:44 AM Agreed, McGrath. I was simply replying to your point And I can't really see how "shorn" could really be pronounced any differently. There is a slight difference between the two cases (the 'r' is pronounced or left silent), but as you say, in the context of a pun, it shouldn't really make much difference to the understanding. Hopefully by now, everyone will understand the pun. If they don't, they probably never will! :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Anyone seen Shaun the Sheep? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 13 Mar 07 - 11:22 AM I can't see how peronouncing with or without an r or leaving it out would really make much difference in wordplay like this. Puns aren't normally as exact as all that. |
Subject: RE: BS: Anyone seen Shaun the Sheep? From: Scrump Date: 13 Mar 07 - 11:12 AM I was about to say that Peter Sallis (the voice of Wallace, and also a member of the cast of the series Last of the Summer Wine, set in Yorks) may have been from Lancs, but I just discovered he is in fact from Twickenham, so bang goes that theory. However, Aardman Animations is based in Bristol, so if he went there to do the voice-overs he could have unconsciously picked up the local accent :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Anyone seen Shaun the Sheep? From: Scoville Date: 13 Mar 07 - 11:07 AM Well, like I said--the pun is pretty obvious in context, even to Americans. Also, I always thought Wallace's pronunciation sort of hinted at an "r", but maybe that's the normal UK pronunciation (?? I don't currently know any Brits named Shaun). |
Subject: RE: BS: Anyone seen Shaun the Sheep? From: jeffp Date: 13 Mar 07 - 10:41 AM Just checked out the one linked. Brilliant! Thanks so much. |
Subject: RE: BS: Anyone seen Shaun the Sheep? From: Scrump Date: 13 Mar 07 - 10:36 AM Good job Jim explained the pun then Scoville! :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Anyone seen Shaun the Sheep? From: Scoville Date: 13 Mar 07 - 10:32 AM "Shorn", with a hard "r". Some regional accents--New England, some places in the South--might drop the "r" but a generalized American accent would pronounce it quite clearly. Also, mostly in America "Shaun" (usually "Sean" or "Shawn") has a pretty broad "a" sound that would sound less like "shorn" even with a dropped "r" ("sho'n"). With the drawls we have here it would almost be two syllables: "SHAW-wun". |
Subject: RE: BS: Anyone seen Shaun the Sheep? From: Scrump Date: 13 Mar 07 - 10:15 AM There's an 'r' in "Shorn" which is pronounced in some parts of England (e.g. the West Country; parts of Lancashire), which would mean it was not pronounced exactly the same as "Shaun". In the south-east, though, the 'r' is probably silent, so in that case you are probably correct, McGrath of The South-East :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Anyone seen Shaun the Sheep? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 13 Mar 07 - 09:22 AM ...but we wouldn't pronounce it so that it sounds like "Shaun". So how on earth would you pronounce it? I suppose you might pronounce "Shaun" is some other way, to rhyme with "gown" or something like that, but both in these films and in the original film it gets repeatedly pronounced in the customary way. And I can't really see how "shorn" could really be pronounced any differently. I know the English sometimes go in for some pretty weird pronunciations, but the Americans generally seem to prefer to pronounce words the way they look like they should be pronounced. |
Subject: RE: BS: Anyone seen Shaun the Sheep? From: Scoville Date: 13 Mar 07 - 09:10 AM Yes, we Americans get that "Shaun=shorn". Well, most of us do. It's pretty obvious in the original context when he gets named "Shaun" after having his wool shaved off and knitted into a sweater. |
Subject: RE: BS: Anyone seen Shaun the Sheep? From: BanjoRay Date: 13 Mar 07 - 08:52 AM I've just finished touring England with The Orpheus Supertones from Pennsylvania - they spent most of the time looking for a Shaun The Sheep. Ray |
Subject: RE: BS: Anyone seen Shaun the Sheep? From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 13 Mar 07 - 08:00 AM I loved it, unfortunately there was no-one here to see why I was laughing so much. My sheep collection is definitely lacking, I really must have a Shaun. My penguin collection has a Wallace & Grommit penguin (dunno what his name is so I checked Wikipedia & he's called Feathers McGraw!) sandra |
Subject: RE: BS: Anyone seen Shaun the Sheep? From: fogie Date: 13 Mar 07 - 05:26 AM This is on far too early when will they place it in its proper spot - about 7pm. Anyone know if it's repeated at any other time yet? Agree about the magic roundabout -except this is funnier. |
Subject: RE: BS: Anyone seen Shaun the Sheep? From: Jim Dixon Date: 12 Mar 07 - 11:11 PM Yes, Americans would know the word "shorn" but we wouldn't pronounce it so that it sounds like "Shaun". |
Subject: RE: BS: Anyone seen Shaun the Sheep? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 12 Mar 07 - 07:01 PM Shaun is quite a common anglicised spelling for Sean, to help make sure it gets pronounced right, I suppose (which isn't the case with the other altyernative spelling, Shane). "I believe there's a pun here that most Americans would miss, that is, Shaun = Shorn." Aren't Americans familiar with the word "shorn"? I'm surprised at that - it crops up a few times in the Bible, both New and Old Testaments. (I mean in the main translations into English.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Anyone seen Shaun the Sheep? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 12 Mar 07 - 06:41 PM I saw it today too, while having a very late lunch: good job it was lasagna and not moussaka! Great stuff! |
Subject: RE: BS: Anyone seen Shaun the Sheep? From: Jim Dixon Date: 12 Mar 07 - 06:16 PM Thanks for bringing this to my attention. There are a lot of American fans of Wallace & Grommit, but it might take awhile for Shaun the Sheep to appear on American TV. By the way, I believe there's a pun here that most Americans would miss, that is, Shaun = Shorn. Is Shaun just an alternate spelling of Sean? Is it pronounced the same? Who uses Shaun? |

Subject: BS: Anyone seen Shaun the Sheep? From: Flash Company Date: 11 Mar 07 - 09:38 AM Latest Nick Park creation running in an afternoon on BBC1 and early morning on BBC2. Based on the Sheep in the Wallace & Grommit cartoon 'A Close Shave'. No dialogue, and the sort of humour that used to be in things like Magic Roundabout. Very funny! FC |
