Subject: Lyr Add: BEAMS OF HEAVEN AS I GO From: Azizi Date: 28 Oct 07 - 09:19 PM BEAMS OF HEAVEN AS I GO 1. Beams of heaven as I go, through the wilderness below, guide my feet in peaceful ways, turn my midnights into days. When in the darkness I would grope, faith always sees a star of hope, and soon from all life's grief and danger I shall be free someday. Refrain: I do not know how long 'twill be, nor what the future holds for me, but this I know: if Jesus leads me, I shall get home someday. 2. Oftentimes my sky is clear, joy abounds without a tear; though a day so bright begun, clouds may hide tomorrow's sun. There'll be a day that's always bright, a day that never yields to night, and in its light the streets of glory I shall behold someday. (Refrain) 3. Harder yet may be the fight; right may often yield to might; wickedness a while may reign; Satan's cause may seem to gain. There is a God that rules above, with hand of power and heart of love; if I am right, he'll fight my battle, I shall have peace someday. (Refrain) 4. Burdens now may crush me down, disappointments all around; troubles speak in mournful sigh, sorrow through a tear-stained eye. There is a world where pleasure reigns, no mourning soul shall roam its plains, and to that land of peace and glory I shall want to go someday. Text: Charles Albert Tindley, ca. 1906 Music: Charles Albert Tindley, ca. 1906; arr. by J. Edward Hoy, 1984 Tune: SOMEDAY, Meter: 77.77.88.96 with Refrain http://www.hymnsite.com/lyrics/umh524.sht (Refrain) |

Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Azizi Date: 28 Oct 07 - 09:27 PM Silent Night. Yes. That speaks to me too. It brings back good memories of Christmas. Btw, somewhat off topic, I had the pleasure of meeting a 6 year old boy yesterday who said he had good "rememberies" of when he was little. I thought that was so precious, especially since this boy is in foster care and already has had experiences that no child should have. But he has good "rememberies". I would expect that we all have good rememberies of some times in our life. And we all have bad memories too. Music has always helped me make it through the times that aren't so good. |

Under the direction of their aunt, Mattie Dacus, they were originally known as The Barrett and Hudson Singers before becoming The Barrett Sisters. Delois was recruited for The Roberta Martin Singers while a high school senior at Englewood High. After graduation, she joined Martin's group full time and remained a member for 18 years. Rodessa Barrett became a choral director of Galileo Baptist church and Billie Barrett became a church soloist after taking voice lessons at the American Music Conservatory. They formed The Barrett Sisters in 1962 and have remained together ever since. Their first LP was recorded for Savoy in 1963. They currently record for I Am Records in Chicago". ~ Ron Wynn All Music Guide http://www.malaco.com/Catalog/Gospel/The-Barrett-Sisters/list.php |

Subject: Lyr Add: PEACE BE STILL From: Azizi Date: 28 Oct 07 - 09:49 PM PEACE BE STILL {Rev. James Cleveland} [Lead] Master, the tempest is raging The billows are tossing high The sky is o'ershadowed with blackness No shelter or help is nigh Carest thou not that we perish? How canst thou lie asleep When each moment so madly is threatning A grave in the angry deep? [Lead: Ad lib] (Chorus) The winds and the waves shall obey thy will Peace, be still Peace, be still Peace, be still Peace, be still Whether the wrath of the storm-tossed sea Or demons, or men, or whatever it be No water can swallow the ship where lies The Master of ocean and earth and sky They all shall sweetly obey thy will Peace, peace, be still (repeat) http://www.lyricsandsongs.com/song/542161.html ** Shiloh Baptist Church singing "Peace Be Still" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgKSdyNJ-TM |

Subject: Lyr Add: SWEET SURVIVOR From: Rapparee Date: 28 Oct 07 - 09:57 PM Why need it be a song with religious references to stir religious feelings? SWEET SURVIVOR Peter Yarrow -Barry Mann -Cynthia Weil- Silver Dawn - ASCAP You have asked me why the days fly by so quickly And why each one feels no different from the last And you say that you are fearful for the future And you have grown suspicious of the past And you wonder if the dreams we shared together Have abandoned us or we abandoned them And you cast about and try to find new meaning So that you can feel that closeness once again. Carry on my sweet survivor, carry on my lonely friend Don't give up on the dream, and don't you let it end. Carry on my sweet survivor, Though you know that something's gone For everything that matters carry on. You remember when you felt each person mattered When we all had to care or all was lost But now you see believers turn to cynics And you wonder was the struggle worth the cost Then you see someone too young to know the difference And a veil of isolation in their eyes And inside you know you've got to leave them something Or the hope for something better slowly dies. Carry on my sweet survivor, carry on my lonely friend Don't give up on the dream, and don't you let it end. Carry on my sweet survivor, you've carried it so long So it may come again, carry on Carry on, carry on. Or Phil Ochs' "Small Circle of Friends" or his "There But For Fortune" or stuff by Tom Paxton, Gordon Lightfoot, Ian Tyson, Judy Collins -- there are "religious songs" all over the place. |

Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Azizi Date: 28 Oct 07 - 10:45 PM Why need it be a song with religious references to stir religious feelings? Rapaire I agree that songs don't need to have religious references to stir religious {perhaps a better word is "spiritual"} feelings. That's why this thread is titled "religious songs" and not "church songs". Thanks for making that point clear & posting an example of such a song, Rapaire. Subject: Lyr Add: IN CHRIST THERE IS NO EAST NOR WEST From: Jim Krause Date: 28 Oct 07 - 10:58 PM I haven't posted in a long time. And while I was looking for something else, I found this thread. The religious song that means very much to me happens by chance to be a church song, In Christ There Is No East or West preferably sung to the melody that John Fahey played. IN CHRIST THERE IS NO EAST NOR WEST (John Oxenham, 1908) In Christ there is no East or West, in him no South or North But one great fellowship of love throughout the whole wide earth. In him shall true hearts everywhere their high communion find Join hands then brothers of the faith, what e'er your race may be In Christ now meet both East and West, in him meet South and North

Music by John B. Dykes in 1865]. Lead, kindly Light, amid th'encircling gloom, lead Thou me on! The night is dark, and I am far from home; lead Thou me on! Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see The distant scene; one step enough for me. -snip- Only the first verse of this song speaks to me. Subject: Lyr Add: WHISPERING HOPE From: sian, west wales Date: 29 Oct 07 - 08:31 AM All good stuff, above. I like "Peace be still" too, and a lot of others of that kind: "Since Jesus Came Into My Heart", "Jesus Saves", "The Ninety and Nine" and more. When I need to slow down, I'm a big fan of Whispering Hope. Soft as the voice of an angel, Breathing a lesson unheard, Hope with a gentle persuasion Whispers her comforting word: Wait till the darkness is over, Wait till the tempest is done, Hope for the sunshine tomorrow, After the shower is gone. Refrain Whispering hope, oh how welcome thy voice, Making my heart in its sorrow rejoice. If, in the dusk of the twilight, Dim be the region afar, Will not the deepening darkness Brighten the glimmering star? Then when the night is upon us, Why should the heart sink away? When the dark midnight is over, Watch for the breaking of day. Refrain Hope, as an anchor so steadfast, Rends the dark veil for the soul, Whither the Master has entered, Robbing the grave of its goal. Come then, O come, glad fruition, Come to my sad weary heart; Come, O Thou blest hope of glory, Never, O never depart. Refrain But I also like these F.W.Faber words, as we sing it in the North American Welsh hymnal to the Caradog Roberts tune, In Memoriam. I went looking for a blue-clicky, as I doubt if the tune is familiar to people here; interestingly, I only found it as Sacred Harp music (tune in the 'tenor' line) here. Faber wrote the words, I guess, as 4 line verses, but we double them up to be 8 line verses to fit the tune. There's a wideness in God's mercy, Like the wideness of the sea; There's a kindness in His justice, Which is more than liberty. There is no place where earth's sorrows Are more felt than up in Heaven; There is no place where earth's failings Have such kindly judgment given. There is grace enough for thousands Of new worlds as great as this; There is room for fresh creations In that upper home of bliss. For the love of God is broader Than the measure of our mind; And the heart of the Eternal Is most wonderfully kind. But we make His love too narrow By false limits of our own; And we magnify His strictness With a zeal He will not own. If our love were but more simple, We should take Him at His word; And our lives would be all sunshine In the sweetness of our Lord. I grew up also singing "Diadem" (the 'all hail the power" words) in the Welsh singing festivals – great stuff. One of many hymns that are big favourites with the ex-pat community. Jim, which tune do you use for "In Christ there is no east or west"? Rapaire, on an 'up' note, I've always felt that Stan Rogers' "Mary Ellen Carter" was a good 'un. sian |

Subject: Lyr Add: COMET (Pierce Pettis) From: John Hardly Date: 29 Oct 07 - 12:07 PM Comet Pierce Pettis A comet streaked across the sky while I was sleeping Broke into a million pieces in the night Missed us by so little, Passed us by so close It was right there and we didn't even know Doesn't God look out for children and for fools Who can blindly stumble right into the truth 'Til all the pieces fit into a grand design Brilliant accident we had coming all the time. Oh, seek and you shall find it That is what they say Just give it time, don't get lost along the way Well, I've been a long time waiting Out here beneath this sky As if love could find me like a comet in the night Does a heart falling in the forest make a sound Other than the pounding axe that brings it down Or is it up to me to tell the forest from the trees Does it matter if there's no one else around? Oh, seek and you shall find it That is what they say Just give it time, and don't get in your own way Well, I've been a long time waiting Out here beneath this sky As if love could find me like a comet in the night Bridge: I gaze about the stars and wonder I can see the lights are on Is anybody home? Oh, seek and you shall find it That is what they say Just give it time, don't get lost along the way Well, I've been a long time waiting Out here beneath this sky As if love could find me like a comet in the night A comet streaked across the sky while I was sleeping. |
Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: sian, west wales Date: 29 Oct 07 - 12:16 PM If it's the one that Azizi linked to, that's the one I like the best. Very folky. I've been listening (a lot!) recently to the Maddy Prior album, "Paradise Found" - hymns of Charles Wesley. I was much struck by the cover notes which include a long quote from John Wesley's preface to "A Collection of Hymns for the Use of the People Called Methodists", 1780. "May I be permitted to add a few words with regard to the poetry? Then I will speak to those who are judges thereof, with all freedom and unreserve. To these I may say, without offence, 1. In these hymns there is no doggerel; no botches; nothing put in to patch up the rhyme; no feeble expletives. 2. Here is nothing turgid or bombast, on the one hand, or low and creeping, on the other. 3. Here are no cant expressions; no words without meaning. Those who impute this to us know not what they say. We talk common sense, both in prose and verse, and use no word but in a fixed and determinate sense. 4. Here are, allow me to say, both the purity, the strength, and the elegance of the English language; and, at the same time, the utmost simplicity and plainness, suited to very capacity. Lastly, I desire men of taste to judge, (these are the only competent judges) whether there be not in some of the following hymns the true Spirit of Poetry, such as cannot be acquired by art and labour, but must be the gift of nature. By labour a man may become a tolerable imitator of Spenser, Shaekspeare, or Milton; and may heap together pretty compound epithets, as 'pale-eyed', 'meek-eyed', and the like; but unless he be born a Poet, he will never attain the genuine spirit of Poetry." It's interesting to hear these hymns sung by Maddy Prior in a folk, rather than ecclesiastic, style. You hear the words afresh. There are some cracking good verses, like: When God is mine and I am his, Of paradise possest, I taste unutterable bliss, And everlasting rest. and another Jesu, Lover of my soul, Let me to thy bosom fly, While the nearer waters roll, While the tempest still is high: Hide me, O my Savior, hide, Till the storm of life be past! Safe into the haven guide, Oh, receive my soul at last! Those old Methodists new how to roll out an image! sian |

Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Azizi Date: 29 Oct 07 - 12:51 PM sian, when you mentioned the title "Jesus Lover Of My Soul", I went looking for it on google and I found this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8BA-82kVR4 Darlene Zschech - Jesus Lover Of My Soul Is this the song you were referring to? I like it. However, there's another song that I've been trying to find with that same title. It was sung by a Black gospel choir {The Edwin Hawkns Singers?} and was faster in tempo than that Darlene Zschech song. I found the words for Jesus Lover Of My Soul {Let me to thy bosom fly} on this website http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/j/l/jlmysoul.htm At least the first verse sounds familiar, but the tune is very different than what I remember. Btw,imo, midis=Ugh!! They just go on and on and on. But they do give a sense of how a song sounds. So I guess folks have to be thankful for small favors and just grin and bear it. The website does mention that there are alternate tunes for this song. The version I'm seeking definitely had another tune. JESUS LOVER OF MY SOUL {Charles Wesley, Hymns and Sacred Poems, 1740. Jesus, lover of my soul, let me to Thy bosom fly, While the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high. Hide me, O my Savior, hide, till the storm of life is past; Safe into the haven guide; O receive my soul at last. Other refuge have I none, hangs my helpless soul on Thee; Leave, ah! leave me not alone, still support and comfort me. All my trust on Thee is stayed, all my help from Thee I bring; Cover my defenseless head with the shadow of Thy wing. Wilt Thou not regard my call? Wilt Thou not accept my prayer? Lo! I sink, I faint, I fall—Lo! on Thee I cast my care; Reach me out Thy gracious hand! While I of Thy strength receive, Hoping against hope I stand, dying, and behold, I live. Thou, O Christ, art all I want, more than all in Thee I find; Raise the fallen, cheer the faint, heal the sick, and lead the blind. Just and holy is Thy Name, I am all unrighteousness; False and full of sin I am; Thou art full of truth and grace. Plenteous grace with Thee is found, grace to cover all my sin; Let the healing streams abound; make and keep me pure within. Thou of life the fountain art, freely let me take of Thee; Spring Thou up within my heart; rise to all eternity. |

Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego Date: 29 Oct 07 - 05:05 PM Eternal Father, Strong to save, Whose arm hath bound the restless wave, Who bid'st the mighty Ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep; O hear us when we cry to thee, for those in peril on the sea. O Christ! Whose voice the waters heard And hushed their raging at Thy word, Who walked'st on the foaming deep, and calm amidst its rage didst sleep; Oh hear us when we cry to Thee For those in peril on the sea! Most Holy spirit! Who didst brood Upon the chaos dark and rude, And bid its angry tumult cease, And give, for wild confusion, peace; Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee For those in peril on the sea! O Trinity of love and power! Our brethren shield in danger's hour; From rock and tempest, fire and foe, Protect them wheresoe'er they go; Thus evermore shall rise to Thee, Glad hymns of praise from land and sea. "Eternal Father," also known as the Navy Hymn in the U.S. I am related to three generations of Naval officers, many now gone. No matter how many times I hear the first verse, especially when sung by a choir or played by a Navy band with great reverence, I get a lump in my throat. Above is one of several slight variants I have seen. |
Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: GUEST,Janie Date: 29 Oct 07 - 05:31 PM Another of my favorites. "Open My Eyes, That I May See" (Clara H. Scott) public domain First published 1895 Open my eyes, that I may see Glimpses of truth Thou hast for me; Place in my hands the wonderful key That shall unclasp and set me free. Refrain 1: Silently now I wait for Thee, Ready my God, Thy will to see, Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine! Open my ears, that I may hear Voices of truth Thou sendest clear; And while the wave notes fall on my ear, Everything false will disappear. Refrain 2: Silently now I wait for Thee, Ready my God, Thy will to see, Open my ears, illumine me, Spirit divine! Open my mouth, and let me bear, Gladly the warm truth everywhere; Open my heart and let me prepare Love with Thy children thus to share. Refrain 3: Silently now I wait for Thee, Ready my God, Thy will to see, Open my heart, illumine me, Spirit divine! midi from cyberhymnal I'm surprised to not find this one in the DT or in a thread. (There is a snippet with a rewrite of the lyrics except for the refrain, but no credit to Clara Scott, who wrote the anthem. (She also published the first book of anthems by a female in the USA.) |
Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: sian, west wales Date: 29 Oct 07 - 06:28 PM Azizi I hadn't heard the Darlene Zschech one before. Sounds like someone has written a praise song based on the Charles Wesley idea. It isn't the one I was thinking of, though. 'Mine' is the one at the cyberhymnal site ... and pretty much the only tune you'll hear sung by the Welsh. It was written by Joseph Parry who was a major force on the Welsh music scene in the mid/late 1800s (spent a lot of time in N.E. United States too.) The other tune, which would have been popular with my mother's family (Canadian Methodists) is on the same cyberhymnal page. Look for the tune name, Martyn, by Simeon B Marsh. Is that the one you're thinking of? It's also sung in a medley on youtube by the South African Mass Male Choir Little Hawk - lovely piece! sian |

Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: theleveller Date: 30 Oct 07 - 04:52 AM Slag, I agree with you about Suzanne. I must be missing something here. Why make the distinction between religious and non-religious songs? If a song 'speaks to you' what does it matter whether it's religious or not? Sorry, I don't get the whole god thing but intrigued to know what the attraction is. |
Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: sian, west wales Date: 30 Oct 07 - 06:06 AM Oh, yes. Definitely "His Eye is On the Sparrow", Azizi. And the choir version of "Jesus, Lover of my Soul" sounds slow to my ears, too. And they draw out the end notes which wasn't part of our 'tradition'. I have the music in a book, which I could scan for you if you wanted it - one I think Hollowfox sent me once. One of those 'old time religion' collections of great singable religious songs. Joe F - "Capt. Kidd hymn"? Would that be a hymn with words on the measure of "Captain Kidd"? Maybe, "What Wondrous Love is This" ... which also deserves a mention in this thread. sian |
Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: GUEST Date: 30 Oct 07 - 06:16 AM There are several, but the one (very popular in the UK, I believe) my mum asked for at her funeral, and which I chose as one of the hymns at my husband's, is "How Great Thou Art". I believe it was originally Russian. My husband wasn't a religious man, but he always said he had the feeling that there was a greater mind behind what he saw in the world on his many travels, which included a lot of walking up mountains and through woods and forests: 'How Great Thou Art' O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder, Consider all the works Thy Hands have made; I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed. Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee, How great Thou art, How great Thou art. Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee, How great Thou art, How great Thou art! When through the woods, and forest glades I wander, And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees. When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur And see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze. Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee, etc And when I think, that God, His Son not sparing; Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in; That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sin. Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee, etc When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation, And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart. Then I shall bow, in humble adoration, And then proclaim: "My God, how great Thou art!" Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee, etc There's another song by a female American singer that I have heard on the radio. I can't remember her name, or what it's called, but she wrote it after the death of her husband. It says something like "in my dreams I'll always see you soar above the sky". I dissolve every time I hear it, and I always forget to listen to the name. To be honest, I'm usually not in any fit state to! As for Christmas, it has to be "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear". So appropriate for these troubled times. Andrea |

Great lyrics/poetry, Little Hawk. Would love to hear the melody. Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: PoppaGator Date: 30 Oct 07 - 12:30 PM Some of the most familiar of the old gospel songs remain among my favorites: "This Little Light," "Jesus Is On the Mainline," "Down By the Riverside," "Glory Halleluiah / When I Lay My Burden Down" . . . I never get tired of hearing and singing them. Then there are the slow-moving lyrical pieces better suited for solo performance (and for listening) than for group participation: "Precious Lord Take My Hand" and "His Eye Is on the Sparrow" are great ones. I have a special place in my heart for Sam Cooke's "Touch the Hem of His Garment" because I had the rare experience, as a young child, of hearing Sam himself, with the Soul Stirrers, leading the congregation of a neighboring church through an incredibly stirring rendition. I won't quote the lyrics here, because for me the song was never about a verbal message but was rather an incredibly inspired exercise in group vocalization, completely transcending any merely literal message. |
Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: GUEST,Slag Date: 30 Oct 07 - 02:04 PM re theleveller's question: There's lots of discussion about God, religion and the like in the lower section. But you raise a good point: What does it mean to be religious? Perhaps, at its most basic level, it means the recognition of things greater, higher than we. Whether it is awe of the universe or the recognition of its creator or the phenomenon of being, it's that thing which separates us from all other living entities (Chongo, Chimps and Bonobos excepted). |
Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: astro Date: 30 Oct 07 - 04:16 PM I always enjoyed "A Mighty Fortress is Our God", words and music by Martin Luther.... A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing: For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate, On earth is not his equal. Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing; Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God's own choosing: Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He; Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same, And He must win the battle. And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us: The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him; His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure, One little word shall fell him. That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth; The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him Who with us sideth: Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; The body they may kill: God's truth abideth still, His kingdom is forever. Alternate translation: A mighty fortress is our God, a trusty shield and weapon; He helps us free from every need that hath us now overtaken. The old evil foe now means deadly woe; deep guile and great might Are his dread arms in fight; on Earth is not his equal. With might of ours can naught be done, soon were our loss effected; But for us fights the Valiant One, whom God Himself elected. Ask ye, who is this? Jesus Christ it is. Of Sabbath Lord, and there's none other God; He holds the field forever. Though devils all the world should fill, all eager to devour us. We tremble not, we fear no ill, they shall not overpower us. This world's prince may still scowl fierce as he will, He can harm us none, he's judged; the deed is done; One little word can fell him. The Word they still shall let remain nor any thanks have for it; He's by our side upon the plain with His good gifts and Spirit. And take they our life, goods, fame, child and wife, Let these all be gone, they yet have nothing won; The Kingdom ours remaineth. I have heard congregations reach to a mighty level in their singing when singing this hymn...to the point that the organist stopped and just listened... Astro...in LA, city of the fallen angels. |

Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Azizi Date: 30 Oct 07 - 07:17 PM FARTHER ALONG {Anonymous/Unknown; arr. by Barney E. Warren, pub. 1911} Tempted and tried, we're oft made to wonder Why it should be thus all the day long; While there are others living about us, Never molested, though in the wrong. Refrain: Farther along we'll know more about it, Farther along we'll understand why; Cheer up, my brother, live in the sunshine, We'll understand it all by and by. Sometimes I wonder why I must suffer, Go in the rain, the cold, and the snow, When there are many living in comfort, Giving no heed to all I can do. Tempted and tried, how often we question Why we must suffer year after year, Being accused by those of our loved ones, E'en though we've walked in God's holy fear. Often when death has taken our loved ones, Leaving our home so lone and so drear, Then do we wonder why others prosper, Living so wicked year after year. "Faithful till death," saith our loving Master; Short is our time to labor and wait; Then will our toiling seem to be nothing, When we shall pass the heavenly gate. Soon we will see our dear, loving Savior, Hear the last trumpet sound through the sky; Then we will meet those gone on before us, Then we shall know and understand why. http://library.timelesstruths.org/music/Farther_Along/ ** Here's a YouTube video of this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sc6mcKUucaw&search=I%27ll%20Fly%20Away%20brother%20where%20out%20thou The Peasall Sisters-"Farther Along" |

It is not, however, the one that beings "What wondrous love is this", but the one that begins Through all the world below God is seen all around. Search hills and valleys through: there He's found. The growing of the corn, the lily and the thorn, The pleasant and forlorn, all declare "God is there". In the meadows drest in green, there He's seen. |

Gabriel 1898] I'm pressing on the upward way, New heights I'm gaining every day; Still praying as I'm onward bound, "Lord, plant my feet on higher ground." Refrain Lord, lift me up and let me stand, By faith, on Heaven's table land, A higher plane than I have found; "Lord, plant my feet on higher ground." My heart has no desire to stay Where doubts arise and fears dismay; Though some may dwell where those abound, My prayer, my aim, is higher ground. Refrain Lord, lift me up and let me stand, By faith, on Heaven's table land, A higher plane than I have found; "Lord, plant my feet on higher ground." I want to live above the world, Though Satan's darts at me are hurled; For faith has caught the joyful sound, The song of saints on higher ground. Refrain Lord, lift me up and let me stand, By faith, on Heaven's table land, A higher plane than I have found; "Lord, plant my feet on higher ground." I want to scale the utmost height And catch a gleam of glory bright; But still I'll pray till Heav'n I've found, "Lord, plant my feet on higher ground." Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: PoppaGator Date: 31 Oct 07 - 05:14 PM Bobert's mention of "70s country-rock gospel" made me think of a couple of numbers in (or near) that category. When I first heard it many years ago, I thought "Spirit in the Sky" was downright stupid. Now I feel more favorably towards it on the rare occasion when it pops up. "Get Together" ["Love is but the song we sing, fear's the way we die..."], by Dino Valenti and most famously recorded by Jesse Colin Young and the Youngbloods, is such a great expression of flower-power-era faith and idealism. You never hear it anymore, probably because people can't sing it without a sense of irony, which is a shame. (I'm working on it, but can't quite pull it off yet...) Another ostensibly secular psychelic-folk anthem that expresses a beautiful spirituality is "Ripple," lyrics by Robert Hunter and music by Jerry Garcia: If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung, Would you hear my voice come thru the music, Would you hold it near as it were your own? Its a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken, Perhaps they're better left unsung. I don't know, don't really care Let there be songs to fill the air. Ripple in still water, When there is no pebble tossed, Nor wind to blow. Reach out your hand if your cup be empty, If your cup is full may it be again, Let it be known there is a fountain, That was not made by the hands of men. There is a road, no simple highway, Between the dawn and the dark of night, And if you go no one may follow, That path is for your steps alone. Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Stringsinger Date: 31 Oct 07 - 06:46 PM Long-haired preachers come out every night, Try to tell you what's wrong and what's right; But when asked how 'bout something to eat They will answer with voices so sweet: CHORUS: You will eat, bye and bye, In that glorious land above the sky; Work and pray, live on hay, You'll get pie in the sky when you die. The starvation army they play, They sing and they clap and they pray 'Till they get all your coin on the drum Then they'll tell you when you're on the bum: Holy Rollers and jumpers come out, They holler, they jump and they shout. Give your money to Jesus they say, He will cure all diseases today. If you fight hard for children and wife -- Try to get something good in this life -- You're a sinner and bad man, they tell, When you die you will sure go to hell. Workingmen of all countries, unite, Side by side we for freedom will fight; When the world and its wealth we have gained To the grafters we'll sing this refrain: FINAL CHORUS: You will eat, bye and bye, When you've learned how to cook and to fry. Chop some wood, 'twill do you good, And you'll eat in the sweet bye and bye. |

Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: GUEST Date: 01 Nov 07 - 08:20 AM This one we had for my mum's funeral, at her request. I then used it at Ian's this year. Given his love of walking hills and the outdoors, it seemed right. I also believe it is taken from a Russian hymn, and that's where he died. He wasn't a religious man as such, but he was convinced there was some higher intelligence behind what he saw. 'How Great Thou Art' O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder, Consider all the works Thy Hands have made; I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed. Then I shall bow, in humble adoration, And then proclaim: "My God, how great Thou art!" Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee, etc As for Christmas, there are many beautiful carols. The one that speaks to me most these days is "It came Upon the Midnight Clear", which has a lot to say about the way of the world. And it was written in the 19th Century - nothing changes, really, does it? Andrea |
Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Little Hawk Date: 01 Nov 07 - 11:28 AM That is a very powerful song, and well-suited to a funeral or any such sacred occasion. You can't go wrong with that sort of thing. If there is, in fact, nothing out there...no God...no afterlife...such songs still summon up powerful and meaningful feelings in people and serve a good purpose. If, on the other hand, there is something out there, and there is an afterlife, then such songs give respect and assistance to it. Only the hardened heart of the cynic or the overly proud intellect of someone who is on a personal vendetta against all such beliefs for his own ego's satisfaction can have the ill will to constantly aggressively attack all such practices simply as a matter of course...just because they are not practices of the attacker's own personal choice. For my own part, I am certain that there is some higher intelligence involved intimately within and behind everything we experience in this life. I don't care what people call it or what name they give to it. I don't care what religion they clothe it in or if they attach no religion at all to it. It doesn't matter. I believe it is here, always has been, and always shall be, and we are all part of it in some way. Science is a useful way of observing its effects in this world. Religious practices are a symbolic way of giving it respect and honoring it. Ultimately, it's the force of love. |

Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Little Hawk Date: 02 Nov 07 - 06:26 PM That sounds like it might be an amusing song, knowing John Prine... ;-) There are some great books about "the missing years". I recommend "The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ" among those. I don't think Jesus was just hammering boards in his first 30 years of life...uh-uh. I think he was traveling, studying hard, learning spiritual disciplines, and doing a great deal of spiritually oriented work. It wasn't covered in the Christian Church's official histories for whatever reason...probably because the few people writing those early official histories had not witnessed any of it themselves, firsthand. |

Subject: ADD: How Great Thou Art From: mouldy Date: 03 Nov 07 - 06:44 AM My mother asked for "How Great Thou Art" at her funeral, and I chose it for one of the hymns at Ian's in March, given his love of the outdoors and wild places. HOW GREAT THOU ART O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder, Consider all the works Thy Hands have made; I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed. Then I shall bow, in humble adoration, And then proclaim: "My God, how great Thou art!" Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee, etc I believe it was translated from a Russian hymn, and that's where Ian died. As for Christmas, given the state of the world, it has to be "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear": "...but man at war with man hears not the love song that they bring. Oh, hush the noise, ye men of strife, and hear the angels sing!" Not bad for something 19th century. Andrea |

Subject: Lyr Add: HOLY NOW (Peter Mayer) From: frogprince Date: 03 Nov 07 - 10:19 PM HOLY NOW (Peter Mayer) When I was a boy each week, on Sundays we would go to church, Pay attention to the priest, and he would read the holy words. And consecrate the holy bread, everyone would kneel and bow, Today the only difference is, everything is holy now. Everything, everything, everything is holy now. When I was in Sunday school, we would learn about the time, Moses split the sea in two, and Jesus made the water wine. I remember feeling sad, miracles don't happen still, Now I can't keep track, everything is a miracle. Everything, everything, everything is a miracle. Wine from water is not so small, but an even greater magic trick, is that anything is here at all. So the challenging thing becomes, not to look for miracles, but find them where there isn't one. When holy water was rare at best, could barely wet my fingertips, Now I have to hold my breath, I'm swimming in a sea of it. There used to be a world out there, heaven's second-rate hand-me-downs, I'm walking with reverend air, everything is holy now. Everything, everything, everything is holy now. Read a questioning child's face; say it's not a testament, that'd be very hard to say. See another new morning come, say it's not a sacrament, I'll tell you that I can't be done. This morning outside I stood; I saw a little red-winged bird, Shining like the burning bush, singing like a scripture verse. It made me want to bow my head; I remember when church let out, How things have changed since then, everything is holy now. There used to be a world out there, of heaven's second-rate hand-me-downs, I'm walking with reverend air, everything is holy now. Peter Mayer |

Holy God, We Praise Thy Name, Come Holy Ghost, Tantum Ergo, etc. (Bobad, did you catch the toddler singing Tantum Ergo?) Janie said, "As I contemplate the premise of the thread title, I find I make distinctions between songs that are favorites because of the associations they have with childhood or family significance, and songs that 'speak' to me spiritually. Anybody else notice that? Yes, Janie, AND I noticed that many that had strong significance to me as a child, still do, not only because of their association to my childhood, but because they held a sacredness then and still do - a sacredness which I find less evident in much of the contemporary music. The words in brackets are what I believe are that soloist's ad-lib lyrics. I may have missed other ad-lib words in the verses. I didn't attempt to transcribe Jessy Dixon's extemporaneous words at the end of this song. Of course, another soloist could sing other ad-lib words or no extemporaneous words at all. ** Click to read the biography of Rev. James Cleveland |
Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Slag Date: 15 Nov 07 - 03:43 PM There is a great little praise song "Glorify Thy Name" by Donna Adkins, based on Psalms 86:12 that is quite singable but I really appreciate when it is done in ASL. You gotta see it to hear it. Father, we love You, We worship and adore You, (chorus) Glorify Thy name in all the earth. Glorify Thy name, glorify Thy name Glorify Thy name in all the earth! Jesus, we love You, We worship and adore You, (chorus) Spirit, we love You, We worship and adore You, (chorus) |
Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Mrs Banjiman Date: 15 Nov 07 - 04:28 PM What an interesting thread! Religious songs can speak to us for so many different reasons...the melody may be very moving/stirring, the lyrics might be particularly relevant for our personal situation, or the song may have good associations from when we've sung it in the past. The latter reason, I'm sure, why songs people had at their wedding or Christmas songs have been mentioned. For me I like the simplicity of "Dear Lord and Father of mankind", love the celtic tune of "Be Thou my vision" (especially the way we play it in our band at church with drums and celtic whistles) and also "What a friend we have in Jesus" because God used that song to help me find a fellow Christian when I was living in Japan and felt my faith was ebbing due to lack of fellowship. Finally, "O Love that will not let me go" - I can't sing the verse about tracing the rainbow without getting choked up!!! |

Actually what you wrote is true for other songs too. That said, I appreciate folks posting examples on this thread of songs that speak to them. As a result of those posts, I've been introduced to some new {for me} songs that also speak to me. |

Showalter, pub.1887} What a fellowship, what a joy divine, Leaning on the everlasting arms; What a blessedness, what a peace is mine, Leaning on the everlasting arms. Refrain: Leaning, leaning, safe and secure from all alarms; Leaning, leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms. Oh, how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way, Leaning on the everlasting arms; Oh, how bright the path grows from day to day, Leaning on the everlasting arms. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Azizi Date: 20 Nov 07 - 11:59 PM I grew up singing a moderately uptempo song called Jesus, The Light Of The World." I've posted the words to that song below my comments. Is this the words to the song that you heard? {Sorry, I've wasn't able to find a YouTube video clip}. Although the first and third line is the same as the Christmas carol "Hark The Herald Angels Sing", the song has a different tune than that carol. In my experience, "Jesus the Lignt Of The World" was always sung in unison and not as a call & response song. JESUS THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD (written by George Elderkin) Verse 1: Hark the herald angels sing, Jesus, the light of the world. Glory to the newborn king, Jesus, the light of the world. Chorus: We'll walk in the light, beautiful light, come where the dewdrops of mercy are bright. Shine all around us by day and by night; Jesus, the light of the world. Verse 2: Joyful all ye nations rise, Jesus, the light of the world. Join the triumph of the skies, Jesus, the light of the world. Chorus Verse 3: Christ by highest heaven adored, Jesus, the light of the world. Christ the everlasting Lord, Jesus, the light of the world. Chorus Verse 4: Hail the heaven born Prince of Peace, Jesus, the light of the world. Hail the Son of righteousness, Jesus, the light of the world. Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Azizi Date: 23 Nov 07 - 09:38 AM As promised, I'm going to post an alphabetized list of songs that have been mentioned in this thread to date {as of 7:30 AM}. Given the length of that list, I'll divide it into two posts, {A-H} and I-Z}. When it was mentioned in the post or when I'm aware that the song is known by another title, I've placed that second title in parenthesis. These lists don't include the song's composers, though that might have been helpful given the fact that there are often multiple songs with the same title. Please forgive any errors that I may have made regarding song titles and/or songs that I advertently omitted from this list. Any corrections of titles and any omissions should be posted to this thread. Needless to say, this list shouldn't be interpreted as the end of this thread. Please feel free to continue posting additional examples of religious songs as well as comments about any song that may have already been posted. Subject: Lyr Add: FAR SIDE BANKS OF JORDAN (Johnny Cash) From: Bert Date: 23 Nov 07 - 01:34 PM This is more of a love song but it is religious. FAR SIDE BANKS OF JORDAN As recorded by Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash on "The Legend" (2005) I believe my steps are growin' wearier each day. Still, I got another journey on my mind. Lures of this old world have ceased to make me want to stay, And my one regret is leavin' you behind. But if it proves to be his will that I am first to cross, And somehow I've a feelin' it will be, When it comes your time to travel, likewise don't feel lost, For I will be the first one that you'll see. CHORUS: And I'll be waiting on the far side banks of Jordan. I'll be sitting drawing pictures in the sand, And when I see you coming, I will rise up with a shout, And come running through the shallow water reaching for your hand. Through this life, we labor hard to earn our meager fare. It's brought us trembling hands and failing eyes. So I'll just rest here on this shore and turn my eyes away Until you come, then we'll see paradise. CHORUS TWICE |

What the world needs now, Is love, sweet love, No, not just for some but for everyone. Lord, we don't need another mountain, There are mountains and hillsides enough to climb, There are oceans and rivers enough to cross, Enough to last 'til the end of time. What the world needs now, Is love, sweet love, It's the only thing that there's just too little of. What the world needs now, Is love, sweet love, No, not just for some but for everyone. Lord, we don't need another meadow, There are cornfields and wheatfields enough to grow, There are sunbeams and moonbeams enough to shine, Oh listen Lord, if you want to know...oh... What the world needs now, Is love, sweet love, It's the only thing that there's just too little of. What the world needs now, Is love, sweet love, No, not just for some oh but just for every, every, everyone. What the world needs now, Is love, sweet love. Ferguson, c.1897 arr. and v. 2 by Anonymous/Unknown, pub.1911] [W. S. Marshall, c.1897 arr. by James H. Fillmore, Sr., pub.1911] Joys are flowing like a river, Since the Comforter has come; He abides with us forever, Makes the trusting heart His home. Refrain: Blessed quietness, holy quietness, Blest assurance in my soul! On the stormy sea Jesus speaks to me, And the billows cease to roll. Everything is turned to gladness, All around this glorious Guest; Banished unbelief and sadness, All is perfect peace and rest. Like the rain that falls from heaven, Like the sunlight from the sky, So the Holy Spirit given, Falls upon us from on high. What a wonderful salvation, Where we always see His face! What a peaceful habitation! What a quiet resting-place! Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Azizi Date: 13 Apr 08 - 09:27 AM One of my memories of Sunday morning when I was a child was my mother turning on a gospel music radio station so we could hear that music as we got ready to go to church. The song "Victory Is Mine" was the theme song for one of those radio shows, and for some reason, it's the only song that I associate with my memories of those Sunday morning shows. One reason why I remember this song may be that it was repeated every Sunday-since it was that radio show's theme song-and it was sung with much more "enthusiasm" {for want of a better word} than my church choirs usually sang. I've found two YouTube videos of that song. The first one I'll post isn't the same but is closest to my memories of how that radio choir from my childhood sang that song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuRQ1zaRHRI&feature=related ** Here's another link to a rendition of that song. This one is sung by Dorothy Norwood Singers, a choir that is very well regarded in gospel music circles: Dorothy Norwood- "Victory Is Mine" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L50l9wNXS0M Alcorn Gospel Choir-"Victory Today Is Mine" |

Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: eddie1 Date: 14 Apr 08 - 02:45 AM Life is funny sometimes. This afternoon I'm going to a funeral of a friend who went overnight from being fit, healthy and enjoying everything in life to being practically unable to speak and being confined to a wheelchair and unable to do anything for himself. This was due to a brain haemmorrage. He spent a year when his speech did get a little better during which time he told me often how much he wished it was all over. Last week he got his wish. Today I found this thread and it's helped me get my thoughts into some kind of perspective. I've no idea what songs/hymns we'll hear today but I'll have a lot to listen to inside. I guess the main one for me is "I Bid You Goodnight" which The Greatful Dead sang. When I have more time I'll find a Blue Clicky for it. Thanks Mudcat. Eddie |
Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Muttley Date: 14 Apr 08 - 05:45 AM Hi Azizi - haven't heard from you in a long while on the PM circuit - I've been in "nocomputerland" for ages and only recently got back to the Mudcat a few weeks ago. I have a few offerings for you on this score (no pun intended) - sorry. I have toi agree with Slag and Little Hawk who nominated 'Amazing Grace': I think not only is the tune spectacularly powerful - but singing its words to the tune of House of the Rising Sun and placing the emphasis on "Grace's" lyrics where they would go on "Rising Sun's" - jus tshows how versatile and powerful this song really is. Add to that the fact that the writer, John Newton was the captain of a slave ship for many years before he found God and became a minister and you have a song which is powerful as well as the story of the lyricists life. My own epiphany moment with Amazing Grace came in the Scottish Highlands when we pulled over one drizzling, windy, freezing morning (just another beautiful Summer's day in the highlands of Western Scotland) into a lookout carpark above Loch Tulla. There was a chap in full 'Cameron Highlander' regalia busking by playing the pipes. As I walked over to film him he segue'd from whatever tune he was doing and into Amazing Grace: I stood there filming with tears running unashamedly down my face and sobbing (you can hear me on the film). However, the other two songs I love and which speak to me are: I LOOKED UP I looked up - - - - and I saw my Lord a-coming I looked up - - - - and I saw my Lord a-coming Down the road A - le - lujah He is coming A - le - lujah He is here A- le - lujah He is coming A - le - lujah He is here I looked up - - - - and I saw my Lord a-crying I looked up - - - - and I saw my Lord a-crying For my sins A - le - lujah He is coming A - le - lujah He is here A- le - lujah He is coming A - le - lujah He is here I looked up - - - - and I saw my Lord a-dying I looked up - - - - and I saw my Lord a-dying On the cross A - le - lujah He is coming A - le - lujah He is here A- le - lujah He is coming A - le - lujah He is here I looked up - - - - and I saw my Lord a-rising I looked up - - - - and I saw my Lord a-rising From the tomb A - le - lujah He is coming A - le - lujah He is here A- le - lujah He is coming A - le - lujah He is here The third song is: MARY DID YOU KNOW Mary, did you know that your baby boy will one day walk on water? Mary, did you know that your baby boy will save our sons and daughters? Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new? This child that you've delivered Will soon deliver you Mary, did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man? Mary, did you know that your baby boy will calm a storm with his hand? Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod? And when you kiss your little baby You've kissed the face of god Mary, did you know? Oh, Mary, did you know? The blind will see.The deaf will hear. And the dead will live again, The lame will leap. The dumb will speak The praises of the lamb. Mary, did you know that your baby boy is lord of all creation? Mary, did you know That your baby boy will one day rules the nations? Did you know That your baby boy is heavens perfect lamb? This sleeping child youre holding; Is the great I am Reba McEntire does a beautiful version but the absolute best I have heard is duet sung by Kenny Rogers and I forget the female partner - a black soul / gospel singer I think. Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: ClaireBear Date: 15 Apr 08 - 05:24 PM Azizi, I have sung several of your favorites in my church's gospel choir -- and even done the solo in most of them, as not many of the women in the choir have solo-quality voices. That's how I know this: You have great taste! I just wanted to mention that my all-time favorite to sing (though not necessarily my favorite song) of those you mentioned is "Peace Be Still." In fact, I liked it so much that I conned the choir leader into letting me reinsert the original second and third verses of the song (as written by Mary A. Baker in 1874 as "Master the Tempest Is Raging," according to the Cyberhymnal) so that the solo part would be longer. You didn't post those verses in this thread, so I thought I would: Master, with anguish of spirit I bow in my grief today. The depths of my sad heart are troubled, O waken and save, I pray. Torrents of sin and of anguish sweep o'er my sinking soul And I perish! I perish, dear Master: O hasten, and take control. Master, the terror is over, the elements sweetly rest. The sun in the calm lake is mirrored, and Heaven's within my breast. Linger, O blessed Redeemer; leave me alone no more, And with joy I shall make the blest harbor, and rest on that blissful shore. Cheers, Claire |
Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Azizi Date: 05 Dec 08 - 06:02 PM I just found two gospel songs on YouTube that I want to share with folks here: Edwin Hawkins Choir-I Heard The Voice Of Jesus Say http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHPPpW6IFn0&feature=related and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSu6UtVImrQ&feature=related ** I first heard the Edwin Hawkins song in the early 1970s. "I Heard The Voice of Jesus Say" sounds different from a lot of gospel songs because there it features a trio instead of a soloist, and has a Latin rhythm to it, or at least that's what it sounds like to me. Here's information that song from the YouTube summary: "Edwin Hawkins Singers, Northern California State Youth Choir - Director Edwin R. Hawkins - "Let Us Go Into The House Of The Lord LP Century 31016, 1968; BPS 10001, 1969 ** I don't recall hearing the gospel song "A Building Not Made By Hand" before. But its tune is "old school" gospel [I mean like the 1950s or 1960s]. And the song is sung in a "old downhome gospel" way that I wish I could describe better. The song uses both call & response [choir/soloist and soloist/choir patterns and also sometimes uses a kind of "lining" approach with the soloist singing a line and the choir taking it from there...In this case, the choir is the church congregation. Everyone appears to know the song. But even if a person didn't know the words to this song when other people started singing it, the repeating pattern of the lyrics make the song easy to learn. I'm really glad I stumbled across this song while surfing YouTube's gospel song collection. Albertina Walker singing "A Building Not Made By Hand", is now definitely one of my favorite religious songs. Of course, I have a lot of favorite religious songs. ** Btw, hyperlinks of these and a number of other Gospel and Spiritual YouTube videos are found on this page of my website: http://www.cocojams.com/gospel.htm |
Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Azizi Date: 05 Dec 08 - 06:46 PM Here are the words to "A Building Not Made By Hand" that were posted in the comment section of that video by ShondaGospelDiva: Lord keep me day by day In a pure & perfect way I want to live, I want to live on In a building not made by hand I'm just a stranger here Traveling through this barren land One thing I know,I have a building somewhere Lord, a building not made by hand Lord keep my body strong So that I may do no wrong Give me grace to run this Christian race Lord, in a building not made by hand. -snip- I see several references to this song on Google, but no indication of who wrote it, and I haven't found any other "complete" example of the words. I wrote the word "complete" in quotation marks because I'm guessing though I don't know for sure that this could be an open ended zipper song with different verses like "Lord keep my heart strong, or Lord keep my mind strong, etc" in addition to "Lord keep my body strong"... Also, from reading the comments, it appears that this song was sung at a special program that featured a number of well known gospel singer. The organist in the video was soul musician Billy Preston. |

Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Sleepy Rosie Date: 06 Dec 08 - 04:16 PM Another from the wonderful 'Red Book'. No meditative contemplation of transendent divinity here. This fiercly celebratory song, powerfully evokes the caravan of travelling pilgrims as they sing and dance their way, mile upon mile across dusty earth to the shrine of Our Lady. I'm right there with them and am always compelled to get up and dance barefooted to this any time I hear it. Which is course the whole point of such a song! Cuncti Simus Concanentis Cuncti simus concanentes: Ave Maria. Virgo sola existente en affuit angelus; Gabriel est appellatus atque missus celitus. Clara facieque dixit: Ave Maria. Clara facieque dixit, audite, karissimi. En concipies, Maria, Ave Maria. En concipies, Maria, audite karissimi. Pariesque filium, Ave Maria. Pariesque filium, audite, karissimi. Vocabis eum Ihesum, Ave Maria. I must confess I don't know what the Latin means. I'm just happy to sing along with the chorus. And experience in that moment of immersion, the knowledge that in my own way in my own life, I too am a member of that caravan. |

Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Sleepy Rosie Date: 14 Dec 08 - 04:51 PM A religious song perhaps not quite. But one that I really like from the fantastic adaptation of Virginia Wolfes Orlando, which I watched tonight.. The lyrics well describe Neoplatonic themes of the dance between Lover and Beloved in the Souls incarnatory journey from division to Union. I Am Coming I am coming! I am coming! I am coming through! Coming across the divide to you In this moment of unity I'm feeling only an ecstasy To be here, to be now At last I am free- Yes-at last, at last To be free of the past And of a future that beckons me. I am coming! I am coming! Here I am! Neither a woman nor a man- We are joined, we are one With a human face We are joined, we are one With a human face I am on earth And I am in outer space I'm being born and I am dying |
Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Phil Edwards Date: 14 Dec 08 - 06:10 PM I can't hear, much less sing, Every Star Shall Sing A Carol without crying. I'm not sure why. Perhaps when I first heard it, in my early teens, it appealed to me as an sf fan; it's not often you hear a hymn about alien life. Perhaps it's the way Carter could combine an open-minded, inquisitive outlook with rock-solid faith; as if to say, there's a great big universe out there, we know almost nothing about almost all of it, but we can be sure that God's out there too. Or perhaps it's just the wild, apocalyptic exorbitance of that first verse (every star!) Wonderful stuff, anyway. |

I Googled the title and found these words: POOR WAYFARING STRANGER I am a poor wayfaring stranger While journeying through this world of woe; And there's no sickness, toil nor danger In that bright land to which I go. I'm going there to see my Father, I'm going there no more to roam; I'm only go-going over Jordan, I'm only go-going over home. I know dark clouds will gather 'round me, I know my way is rough and steep; And beautiful fields lie just before me, Where God's redeemed there vigils keep. I'm going there to see my Father, I'm going there no more to roam; I'm only go-going over Jordan, I'm only go-going over home. I'm going there to see my mother, I'm going there no more to roam; I'm only go-going over Jordan, I'm only go-going over home. I want to wear that crown of glory, When I get home to that good land; Well I want to shout salvation's story, In concert with ohh the blood-washed band, I'm going there to see my Saviour, I'm going there no more to roam; I'm only go-going over Jordan, I'm only go-going over home. Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Azizi Date: 02 Aug 09 - 10:53 PM oldhippie, I chose not to use the title "Spiritual Songs That Speak To You" because I was concerned that people might think I was referring to African American spirituals such as "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" and "Wade In The Water". Personally, I prefer to consider myself "spiritual" rather than "religious". But the point of this thread is for people to share the songs that speak to their spirit however they choose to refer to it. |
Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Azizi Date: 03 Aug 09 - 07:14 AM Here's another song that I love: CENTER OF MY JOY Artist: Richard Smallwood (Intro) Jesus, You?re the center of my joy. All that?s good and perfect comes from You. You?re the heart of my contentment. Hope for all I do. Jesus, You?re the center of my joy. (Verse) When I?ve lost my direction, You?re the compass for my way. You?re the fire n? light, when nights are long and cold. In sadness You are the laughter that shadows all my fears. When I?m all alone, Your hand is there to hold. Oooh (Chorus) Jesus, You?re the center of my joy. All that?s good and perfect comes from You. You?re the heart of my contentment. Hope for all I do. Jesus, You?re the center of my joy. (Verse) You are why I find pleasure in the simple things in life. You?re the music in the meadows and the streams. The voices of the children, my family and my home. You?re the source and finish of my highest dreams. (Chorus) Jesus, You?re the center of my joy. All that's good and perfect (All that?s good and perfect comes from You). You're the heart of my contentment (You?re the heart of my contentment). Hope for all I do (Hope for all I do). Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Azizi Date: 03 Aug 09 - 07:28 AM Here's a church song that I remember well: JESUS, THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD * (written by George Elderkin) Verse 1: Hark the herald angels sing, Jesus, the light of the world. Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Jeanie Date: 03 Aug 09 - 11:42 AM I've just got back from the Yearly Meeting Gathering of Quakers in York, UK. On the last night we circled the lake and sang this song, while lanterns were launched into the night sky: Building bridges between our divisions I reach out to you, will you reach out to me ? With all of our voices and all of our visions Friends we can make such a sweet harmony And here we are, singing it, with voices echoing around the lake: Building Bridges - jeanie |
Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: VirginiaTam Date: 03 Aug 09 - 01:59 PM Farther Along sung by this woman. Though I am leaning towards atheism, this performance moves me to tears. Something about the purity of it. I just love this woman. |
Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Azizi Date: 03 Aug 09 - 02:52 PM VirginiaTam, I think it may be because we can feel that that woman believes what she is singing. Often some other singers appear to be just performing. ** I also like this version of "Farther Along": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sc6mcKUucaw&search=I%27ll%20Fly%20Away%20brother%20where%20out%20thou "Farther Along" By The Peasall Sisters |

Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: VirginiaTam Date: 04 Aug 09 - 03:20 PM Azizi I had seen the Pearsall Sisters one. Can't watch it through because it reminds of the days I sang hymns with my little girls at church, Andie creating amazing harmonies off the top of her 11 -14 year old head. Having said that, even if I didn't have the tragedy of Andie's untimely passing and hurt of memories to contend with, I still prefer the elderly lady singing. And you were spot on as to why. Her song is coming from a deep abiding faith. But there is something more. It is coming from her suffering and an understanding of the suffering of others and that is what makes it so special. I want to be a small child sitting cross legged chin in hands, at her feet listening to her sing and tell stories. |

Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: 2581 Date: 20 Mar 12 - 11:36 AM My all-time favorite spiritual song is "Wayfarin' Stranger", which has been mentioned by a couple of posters. It has been sung by literally hundreds of artists. Some of my favorite performances are by Johnny Cash, Doc & Merle Watson, Dolly Parton, Red Molly, The Crooked Jades, Tim O'Brien, Tim Buckley, Natalie Merchant, Jack White, Joan Baez & Mimi Farina, and Emmylou Harris. However, the two best performances I've ever heard are by Isaac Guillory & Darrell Scott. See them below: Isaac Guillory live version Darrell Scott live version -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: 2581 Date: 20 Mar 12 - 11:46 AM Another excellent gospel song - which I haven't seen mentioned in this thread - is "I Am The Man, Thomas". Excellent versions have been performed by Don Rigsby & Midnight Call, Larry Sparks, Newfound Road, and Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys, among others. |

Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: deepdoc1 Date: 17 Mar 13 - 08:06 PM I think we ignore our spiritual side at our peril, and I embrace the quest for meaning, but I do balk at the kinds "religiosity" that provide the one answer. In that vein, I like Tom Russells "Guadalupe". Stephanie Davis "Wolves" speaks to the place where hard lives intersect with hope and the unknown. Add another for Iris DeMents "Let The Mystery Be". Gove Scrivenors "I'll Fly Away" is a rollicking good gospel number with a little Doc Watson help. "Fifty Niles Of Elbow Room" as sung by Red Clay Ramblers. "I Betcha Heaven's On A Dirt Road" by Larry Jon Wilson (RIP). Lot's of good musical memories here. I remember alot of these numbers from growing up in a relifious household. |
