Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: Les from Hull Date: 05 Jun 01 - 06:20 AM Ralphie I hope that you'll post here again when Nic's new CD is available, with full details of how to get hold of it. Thank you for helping get Nic's work out to the public. Nic's interpretations of songs and tunes have been inspirational for so many of us (I'm glad I've still got all the old LPs). I know that shameless plugging of one artist's work is not the norm on Mudcat, but Nic's particular circumstances transcend all that. Les |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: Garry Gillard Date: 05 Jun 01 - 06:54 AM What Les from Hull said! Except that Nic's particular talent transcends all that anyway. Garry (Oh, and I haven't any old LPs, unfortunately.) |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: wes.w Date: 05 Jun 01 - 08:44 AM Requests? Please, if possible, 'Dobro Part out of Cheating Heart' which I've been humming in the bath etc, for years now without knowing the words, and 'Knight tries to rescue Damsel in tower, but gets eyes pulled out'. I only heard Nic do the last one once, the last time I saw him perform, but it was a real shivers down the spiner! Thanks to you, Nic, and Julia for this new CD set - I'll buy it no matter what's on it. PS - Fourteen year old 'pop, indie and irish music' daughter asked to borrow 'Penguin Eggs' CD last night! Why? Reply was :'Well Dad, its like that folk music stuff you listen to - but different.' Transcends generations too? |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: Ralphie Date: 05 Jun 01 - 01:55 PM Hi Wes W Both "Smokey's Bar" (V Good Quality) and "Rapunzel" (Mmm Quality!!) are included....!! Don't want to give out the full track listing as yet. as we are still arguing about it ! But, stand by for possibly 25/26 Songs and tunes....Most of CD1 should be excellent Quality, and CD2 will be mainly requests, and personal faves...Hence the arguments....Keep this thread alive people, and I'll fill you all in as soon as poss Love R xx PS...Wes...Congrats to your daughter on her excellent taste! |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: John Routledge Date: 05 Jun 01 - 02:18 PM Please reserve me a copy or let me know what I need to do. Many Thanks John |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: GUEST,Learchild Date: 05 Jun 01 - 04:21 PM Hi Ralphie great to hear about this - many rumours but this is wonderful news. I know I'll want two copies. Love to you all |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: wes.w Date: 06 Jun 01 - 09:26 AM Thanks Ralphie - perhaps we'll meet over a concertina or two sometime, from what I hear! I'll owe you a beer 'til then. |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: GeorgeH Date: 07 Jun 01 - 08:22 AM Yup, this is the release I posted about . . (I'll put in a blue clicky thingy when I've a spare moment). When I spoke to Ralph they hadn't finally decided on whether to go for a double CD, so I didn't want to raise folks hopes. If you want to go on Ralph's email list to be notified when Unearthed is unearthed then either "personal message" me here or email me (ghawes@advaoptical.com) with your email address and I'll make sure you're added to the list. Oh, and since the marvelous Ralphie is far too modest - I'll mention he's performing at Sidmouth this year both as part of his "Girlie Band" and as part of his "Boy Band". Look out for him! Cheers! George |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: Ralphie Date: 09 Jun 01 - 08:05 AM Aw Shucks George!! You'll get me all embarrased!! But, for anybody coming to Sidmouth, I'll be there on Weds,Thurs, and Friday. The "Girl Band" are "The Fraser Sisters" and, "The Boy band" are "Patterson,Jordan,Dipper" Come and find me...and I'll let you know the latest on the project..(I'm the tall thin one with the big nose....Ralphie |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: GeorgeH Date: 11 Jun 01 - 12:36 PM He's particularly easy to spot when performing as one of the Fraser Sisters . . . G. |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: GeorgeH Date: 12 Jun 01 - 05:59 AM Public request to Ralphie . . since you're down as a performer, and Colin's PROBABLY down there, wouldn't a musical tribute to Nigel Chipendale be a wonderful idea? George |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: GUEST,Neil Jennings Date: 12 Jun 01 - 07:53 AM Are these previously unreleased tracks, or just unreleased on CD?. (I have the early LP's). I also have a few live recordings (from Pontardawe, c1973)of songs which don't seem to have been released before, and would like to get hold of them if possible. |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: Ralphie Date: 12 Jun 01 - 01:05 PM Neil. All the tracks on "Unearthed" will be previously unreleased (apart from Warlike Lads of Russia" and "Fordie" which have been released by the good people of Fellside records) We've avoided songs from the "Lost" 4 early Nic albums, in the probably forlorn hope that one day they will see the light of day......Fat Chance I know, but just maybe.....!! I'm tempted to ask to hear your Pontadawe recordings...but !! I've got to stop somewhere...!! Rest assured that "Unearthed" will be a stonker..! And....George...! Little chance of Colin and I having any time before Sid to bone up on old ERIC stuff, and anyway, It wouldn't be the same without the Old Fella there in person...Maybe some Nigel Tunes may creep into the PJD repertoire as time goes on... Cheers Ralphie |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: GeorgeH Date: 13 Jun 01 - 05:02 AM Yes, I know that . . But I did say "tribute" rather than "recreation"! We need to educate all these youngsters about the "Old Fella" (actually, we're the old ones, he's forever young . . . ) Still, I can dream - and remember . . (IIRC Stocai's "Ralph's Tune" is Nigel's, isn't it?) G. |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: GUEST,Dita (at work) Date: 13 Jun 01 - 05:17 AM Ralphie, just a question, were the "Warlike lads of Russia" and "Fordie" tracks recorded for Fred Wood's Folk Roots albums, and if so are there any more of Nic's songs from these sessions?. From what I remember, Fred produced two albums for new subscribers to his mag, and these contained unique recordings by Nic, Archie Fisher and many others. Thinks out loud - "I wonder where the origional masters for these albums are" thanks, not just for your answer but for all your good work, love, john |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: gregbat Date: 13 Jun 01 - 07:23 AM I'm living in Saudi Arabia where surprisingly enough, we don't get the latest traditional / folk releases. I'd really appreciate it if someone (maybe Ralphie) could let me know when the new Nic Jones album is available and how I can get a copy. I have a postal address in the UK but for now people can contact me at greg@justdeserts.co.uk. Cheers. |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: pavane Date: 13 Jun 01 - 11:17 AM Ralphie. I may be able to let you have copies of the Pontardawe session, (my email is cobform@email.com) but quality on the early cassette recorders wasn't great!. I will probably copy it to a CD. 'Warlike sons of Russia' was one of the tracks - I didn't know it had been released. I think his guitar work on 'The blind harper' was better in the live version than the recording. I have Nic's first 3 LPs on Vinyl, but I wasn't keen on Penguin eggs, and never bought it. I also have Songs of a Changing World, where he is one of the three singers. (I was originally from Romford area, and did see Nic at Chelmsford and other local clubs.) |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: Ralphie Date: 13 Jun 01 - 04:42 PM Dita... Yes..Warlike & Fordie were from the the Fred Woods recordings....We thought that this was the best place to put them.... |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: Ralphie Date: 13 Jun 01 - 04:49 PM Woops...hit the wrong button..! As I was saying....Hold hard me hearties.....I've been struggling on with these tapes for about 20 years.....It will all come good ....soon.. Can I go to sleep now? And to everyone else....Please ....no more tapes!!!! Much as I love Rose of Allandale, there is a limit... God Bless to all Ralphie xx |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: Ralphie Date: 13 Jun 01 - 04:59 PM Dita... As to your other message re....where are the master tapes...? I honestly don't know. I really hope that they are safe, As a BBC engineer, and archivist of many years, I keep everything that I record......BIG TIME !! But, I wasn't involved in that particular project.....Shame Love Ralphie xx |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: Ralphie Date: 13 Jun 01 - 05:09 PM Me again! To all correspondents to this site..... Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: pavane Date: 14 Jun 01 - 04:04 AM Hey, I don't know why my posting showed up at 3 am? - Oh yes, the server must be in USA? It is now 9am here |

Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: Ralphie Date: 14 Jun 01 - 09:23 AM Pavane...Hi! Mmm interesting..! Could you run off a cassette for me? Address is 50 Kettlebaston Road Leyton London E10 7PF... The early to Mid 70s stuff is very thin on the ground, hence my previous reference to "Allandale!" I've got lots of material from the "Penguin Eggs" period which I can't really use as the CD is still out there!! Particularly interested in Loch Royal and St Helena...Even if I don't use it, rest assured you'll get it back....Cheers Ralphie |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: Noreen Date: 14 Jun 01 - 09:43 AM Nic singing the Lass of Loch Royal? I'd love to hear that. |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: pavane Date: 14 Jun 01 - 09:58 AM Lass of Loch Royal - He gives a little background on the abbreviated version before singing it, but its almost lost in the noise. I will try and get a version to anyone interested, but as I said, be warned it was recorded on a primitive 1970 cassette recorder in a noisy club! |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: pavane Date: 15 Jun 01 - 02:42 AM Anyone know where I can find a discography of Nic? I am sure there are records which I don't know about |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: pavane Date: 15 Jun 01 - 06:41 AM I have now found a discography at http://www.sarcon.demon.co.uk/engfolk/21/nic_jones.htm
The following songs which I have on tape do not seem to appear on the discography unless under a different name:
|
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: pavane Date: 15 Jun 01 - 06:41 AM And I forgot Jolly Bold Robber |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: pavane Date: 15 Jun 01 - 06:50 AM And Bay of Biscay Bunch of Rushes |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: Les from Hull Date: 15 Jun 01 - 07:15 AM 'White Copper Alley' is 'Lass of London City' |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: Ralphie Date: 15 Jun 01 - 08:33 AM Well spotted Les!! Maybe some other useful stuff though...particularly interested in Peel sessions, as (apart from 4 tracks) all the other 10 or so sessions are long gone..Poo! Ralphie |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: Ralphie Date: 18 Jun 01 - 12:34 PM Refresh For all who are interested! Ralphie |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: GUEST,Mark. West Sussex U.K. Date: 18 Jun 01 - 10:06 PM Well Done Ralph. Thanks for all your work and for standing by Nic and keeping the faith all these years. As for the Lost Four. Isn't it about time the culprit who jealously guards the Rights was outed and subjected to International pressure on a scale that might at least bring deserved infamy. Only £20.00? A lot of us would happily pay twice that as long as we knew the profits were going to Nic and the wonderful Julia. |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: GUEST,Terry Blankenship Date: 18 Jun 01 - 11:21 PM Pavane, Here are the best Nic Jones links that I have found. A couple of them great have discographies. http://www.freefolk.com/nicjones.htm http://www.lesk.demon.co.uk/pages/jones.htm http://www.sarcon.demon.co.uk/engfolk/21/nic_jones.htm http://www.folkmusic.net/htmfiles/inart437.htm Ralphie, I'd like to get a copy of the New Nick Jones double cd also. Terry Blankenship

Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: Ralphie Date: 19 Jun 01 - 03:37 AM Terry....Of course you can have a copy !! We're down to arguing about sleeve notes now, so, the end is in sight. Mark...I hear what you're saying about Mr B...Beleive me when I say that "No turn has been left un-stoned" with regards to this subject (see threads passim - ed) I take the view that if we all keep cool, the gradual drip - drip of opinion will win...maybe a boycott of all CM releases...? I'm just happy that I was in the position to help on this project. And with regards to the price....Not fixed yet, but the whole reason that Julia set up "Mollie Music" was to cut out the very people of whom you speak! (Hardly surprising) So....A complete running order will appear here FIRST! In the next few weeks...Regards Ralphie |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: pavane Date: 19 Jun 01 - 03:41 AM I thought it was 'No TERN (as in the sea bird) left unstoned'. PS did you get the tapes? My email seems flakey at the moment, but Noreen got hers |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: GeorgeH Date: 19 Jun 01 - 06:41 AM I think it's all a matter of context, Pavane . . I always think of Music Hall turns . . . (then again I never have been a fan of Music Hall . . .) UK catters don't forget to buy Ralphie a pint at Sidmouth (and don't suggest a visit to Carenas . . .) G. |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: pavane Date: 19 Jun 01 - 07:28 AM It comes from a poem somewhere, you get no stone unturned, no tern unstoned, and no tone unsterned, whatever that may mean. I remember seeing it years ago, but have no idea where - perhaps I will search the net |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: pavane Date: 19 Jun 01 - 07:36 AM The source would appear to be: "I am a conscientious man, when I throw rocks at sea-birds I leave no tern unstoned" -OGDEN NASH |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: Ralphie Date: 19 Jun 01 - 09:27 AM You're all mad !!! Yes...Tape arrived safely...will call... And...The Black hole of Carinas....Nurse! the Screens!! Ralphie |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: pavane Date: 19 Jun 01 - 10:18 AM This madness helps to keep us sane. Take me back to the Black Hole The Black Hole of Calcutta To that beautiful Indian country that I love |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: GeorgeH Date: 19 Jun 01 - 02:05 PM Calcutta and Carenas are worlds apart . . . G. |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: pavane Date: 19 Jun 01 - 05:31 PM Can't be more than one world apart, surely, unless my astronomy is out of date? |
Subject: RE: New Nic Jones (Double) CD From: pavane Date: 20 Jun 01 - 02:37 AM Does anyone remember Nic playing O'Carolan's concerto? |
