We got some very frightening news from my niece (Kendall's granddaughter) last night. It seems her husband Ezra and a friend went out to the Old Port section of Portland, Maine last Tuesday night (3/10/09) to celebrate the friend's birthday. Ezra has not been seen or heard from since. We're at 7 days now and at a complete loss. The police are involved, though they had to wait 72 hours to file a missing persons report. My niece has made up a poster to be distributed as far as we can get it and our next step is to get the media involved. Please, we could really use all the good vibes we can get right now. Also any helpful suggestions on things we can do would be appreciated. Thanks for taking the time.

Becca in uk we have a missing persons helpline do you have something similar over there they are really good at getting the information out there and have contacts a family might not even think of.

Sins, I sent you a copy of the flyer Meghan put together. If you could put them up around work and home that would be a great help.
It pains me to say it, but the Old Port is not a safe place for a young confident black man these days. There have been several incidents of people of different ethnic backgrounds either getting beaten into a coma or killed in the last few years. Ezra has never been one to back away from a fight, either. I don't want to even think that's what happened, but with no information to go on your mind tends to fill in the blanks all on its own.

I contacted my rep. to the state legislature, the woman whom I helped get elected, and she said she would go directly to the Attorney General. I guess it pays to get involved in politics.

It doesn't sound like a racial beating to me..with no commotion, no signs of a struggle etc. I would get the FBI involved. It almost sounds like a Shanghai but hopefully we are in the wrong century for that...but if he was taken against his will he would have had to have been doped and taken out through a window or something..have you checked out the window and exit situation there? Of course he could have been threatened and asked to go quietly or they would hurt family or something. Hate to get this way but no stone must be left unturned. Is he from this country? Could he have unsavory connections,involuntary? Could he have been lured to this particular bar? COuld there be old trap doors etc. from previous times?

Of course it could have been totally voluntary and not great reasons, such as another woman, escaping debts, etc., but at least he would be safe if that were the case. mg

The tv news crews should be doing a missing persons report with a photo of Ezra on their screens, as well as radio and print media and not just local, but statewide, plus into neighbouring states. Has the nearest NAACP been contacted yet about some help looking and getting the word around?

Have local ministeriums been asked to BOLO for someone (Ezra) seeking safe sanctuary because some bad folks have him running (thru no fault of his I am confident)

Have area welfare agencies been asked to BOLO for anyone needing emergency cash, maybe due to a robbery (poss head injury, not knowing he's himself)

Have local yoot orgs (scouts, 4H, etc) been asked to BOLO?

School officials in case a young black man is hovering, hurt, in a playground, who they may otherwise dismiss as a perve?

What org has a local email network that would blast a BOLO?

CNN with an angle on the biracial overtones-- "another young [black] man [white] people may not care enough to look for or to SEE"?


I know you are doing all you can think to do-- I also know you that are probably pretty overwhelmed and that it's easy to miss a BOLO vector in a situation like this.

I know you all mean to be helpful but right now the family needs prayers and positive thoughts. The police are doing their job and all of your points (all excellent) are or will be covered.
I stopped by the bar Ezra was known to have been in on Tuesday and the manager was very concerned and helpful. He asked for a poster and said he would put it on a post between the men's and the ladies' rooms. Everyone who walks in the place will see it.
Posters are going up and without exception everyone who saw them was concerned. One man who works in an ER promised to check out the John Doe records of all the local hospitals.
Portland is usually a very friendly town. We all know the possibilities. Let's join together to support, Kendall, Jacqui and Becca as they requested.

I second my father's thoughts on this. It no longer looks like a crime, but more like a 22 year old out doing some stupid stupid stuff. The general feeling is that he is in Casco Bay, unfortunately. I hope and pray we're all wrong but it is a very bleak outlook indeed.

I don't know Meghan or Ezra well but I have seen them often enough to know that neither would take off without warning the other. They are very young and have worked very hard to build a life for themselves. It hasn't always been easy but they have stuck it out together with a maturity far beyond their years.
It seems so unfair that one night of drinking should cost them everything.
For now, the single most important thing is finding him.

Thank you all for including us in your thoughts. There have been many many updates over the last couple of days and the plot continues to thicken. I won't give details because nothing is certain at this point but it is still considered suspicious. The police are going back over the land they've already covered today and tomorrow and Saturday they're bringing in the helicopter with sonar to check the water.

The police lost vital investigation time on this one. He was declared missing Friday and the case sat on someone's desk until Monday. The police also let him go after kicking him out of the marina, even though he was visibly intoxicated (in public).

The police said that they would not provide divers for a search because of lack of funds. I wonder if they would react differently if it were Susan Collins' son who was missing? Surely, if there were foul play, the sooner they find the body, the more evidence they are likely to recover from it? This whole business is beginning to stink.


PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER) -- The Portland police department needs the public's help in searching for a man who has been missing for a week.

22-year old Ezra Milan was last seen out with his friends in the old port last Tuesday night.

Police say he and his buddies were drinking for a friend's birthday.

Just minutes before he went missing - police caught him at DiMillo's marina trespassing on someone else's boat. No charges were filed and he and his friends moved across the street to Bill's Pizza.

From there, neither the police nor Milan's friends seem to know what happened.

Police have been actively searching for Milan since Friday, when he was officially declared missing.

They say it is possible Milan fell into the water, though they haven't spotted him, and diving is one of their last options; for one, because that area is deep and murky, and another because they at this point they don't have the resources to dedicate to that.

At this point though, they remain hopeful Milan is still alive, just lost.

Family members say Milan hasn't missed a day of work at Dick's Sporting Goods in over three years... police are calling his disappearance suspicious.

Ezra Milan is described as a 6 foot 3, 180-pound black male. He has short black hair and brown eyes. Milan was last seen wearing a black Carhartt coat, blue jeans, and a white t-shirt.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Portland police

Thanks to everyone. We're still in a holding pattern at this point. This morning the Coast Guard divers are searching the bay, the police have the dogs out and this afternoon they're bringing in the SONAR helicopter from Cape Cod. This has been a horrible, horrible week.

Becca, thanks, darlin'...sometimes it is the only thing I can think of to do. It can be a tough one, though. We never want to even think about letting go of our loved ones even when they are around, let alone when they are missing. The "highest good" bit eventually sinks in and helps, but it can still be tough.

It has been tough, but we are all pretty sure, barring a miracle, what the outcome will be from this one. Letting him go will be a big step to healing our family, when that time comes.
I have to share a story. My sister Deb was at Meghan & Ezra's apartment last Wednesday (7 days after he went missing) and went outside for something. When she came back in she happened to look down at the stoop because there was dog shit near it that she was trying to avoid. She found a small silver charm in the shape of a sneaker, which she brought in to Meghan. Meghan said that it had fallen off Ezra's keychain about 2 weeks prior and they'd been looking for it. Deb is adament that it WAS NOT THERE the 4 or 5 other times she passed over that stoop that day, nor was it there for the 2 weeks Meghan and Ezra had been looking. She had looked down each time to make sure she was clear of the poop and there was no charm. I have chosen to take that as a sign that Ezra was checking in on Meghan from where ever he is and while I'm sad he's not here with us, I'm glad to know he's still near is some sense.

We spoke to Meghan on the phone a couple of hours ago. She's holding on but it is hard. We're arranging a family dinner for next week, all coming to our house for the evening.

Meghan knows that she can call on us any time, day or night. It is so frustrating to not be able to do anything substantial when someone you love very much is going through so much pain. All we can do is be here for her.

I understand how you feel; I think we all do, here, to the lesser extent that is appropriate for the lesser role/closeness we have... but I want to say this very clearly:


You ARE doing something substantial, to stay close to someone you love very much, when they are going through pain. It IS substantial just to be there-- for anyone.

I could tell you a million stories where real people have told me, deeply moved, how it mattered in practical ways as well as in "heart"-ways, just to know someone-- even just one person, even just for a moment-- was really there for them.

I know that will not stop the powerless-to-help feeling, but remember that support is huge help (and also can mean the supporters need to take occasional, short, step-back breaks).

We (the family) have the answers to some of the questions this story asks that have not yet been released to the public. It's part of an ongoing investigation and I, for one, am glad they are not releasing everything to the media. It would make the job of the police much much harder.

We had a family gathering here last night - lots of pasta and lots of laughter, which always is the case when this family gets together.

Meghan has a strong, caring family around her and we tried to make sure, last night, that she knows that we are there if she needs us.

It's now 24 days since Ezra disappeared with what seems, to us, not a lot of progress. All we can do is wait.

Captain, if he has news it will go to Meghan first. There are very few times when things are completely out of our control. When it happens, it is hard and frustrating. Keep Meghan close and safe. For now, that is all you can do.

As a number of posts have indicated, some folks watching this thread closely do not post every time they look in. The following is an example of what I know a lot of us mean by "watching closely." Thanks are not needed-- just, wrap yourself in the knowledge of the energy this little "Mudcat lens" directs your way.

With me, it may mean that as I go through the 3 hours of my (newly diabetic) husband's Good Friday services trying to make sure he eats when he needs to, leading a meditation of my own during the service and recording the service for an intern, plus the 2 added hours to re-set the church for the Easter Vigil while a homeless drop-in scares the heck out of the volunteers working hard after their 3-hour service participation, while I teach the volunteers about how helping is done and help the parish secretary get help for the homeless lady-- I'm also thinking of [praying for/sending good thoughts for/sending love and concern to family of/sending gratitude and strength for law enforcement about] Ezra. And Meghan. And Becca. And Kendall. Knowing that no matter how tired my legs, my feet, my mind-- THEY are tired beyond measure.

It means that while I have a zillion things to do to get ready for a Monday biztrip, and another zillion things to do, tomorrow, instead of trip prep, to stand with folks and hour away in THEIR crisis, I'll also be thinking about Ezra.

It means that during the travel for the biztrip.... the biz meetings... setting up the camper to be near the meetings..... etcetcetc.... at the Racism Commission meeting that will end the bizweek's biztrip..... Ezra.

No matter what I am doing-- because I know that his family does not have the luxury nor has yet given themselves, probably, permission, to think of anything else, waking or sleeping, while they also have routine daycrap to deal with.

You folks don't get a break-- neither do we who are standing with you.

My sisters, brothers-in-law and I spent the day with Meghan yesterday. It was a very good day all things considered. She's an extremely bright young woman with a good head on her shoulders. From all I have heard of Ezra, I am sure that he would want Meghan to be kind to herself, to do whatever it takes to be as strong as she can be, to be happy, and to have as many good things in her life as she is able to have.

I am sure that returning to work will not FEEL like any of that.... because the heart says that it's never the "right time." But support for her, here, will still mark the passage of this waiting, even as she gets back into the routine. May she always find us right here, ready with a fresh word of encouragement.

I haven't said much up until now.

I am approaching anniversary of loss of my daughter and very recently a friend (another catter who shall be nameless) lost his son. So I am breaking my self-imposed decision to keep my thougts minimal.

Why is it so hard to cope with the loss of a young person? Historically, it is not so long ago that many children often did not survive their parents. Illness, accidents, wars took them. I wonder, were parents better prepared for such circumstances a hundred years ago?

I should say having had a dream some 2+years after my daughter's death that she had just disappeared, it felt worse than knowing she had died. The not knowing what had happened to her was more than I could bear.

So - I am still checking, still hoping for resolution, still hurting in concert with you all.

Janie, he was a young man of mixed race. Good looking, well built, attractive, well spoken. He worked as a manager of a local sports shop. He worked when he was supposed to and was quite trustworthy.
Whenever I needed help he was right here and he refused to take any payment.
His only crime was being a young man in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I still haven't gotten a reply from the Chief of Police.

Janie,
Meghan and Ezra married very young and learned most of their lessons the hard way. They came through the hard times together with intelligence and dignity. Things were finally all falling into place for them. They had their own home, good jobs, and a good future together.
I don't even remember what I needed done. Ezra showed up with Meghan and her brother Thomas and his girlfriend. All young and beautiful and decent. All willing to help. Maybe they delivered the futon from Kendall and Jacqui's.
I spent very little time with him and Meghan - and always at Morse gatherings. I was always struck by their maturity and dignity - a strange word to use but the only one that fits. They had fun and laughed and were young but there was always a maturity far beyond their years.
I wish I understood what has happened.

I have family (who do not belong to the Cat) who check in daily to read the words of care and encouragement. It isn't taken as a painful reminder but as an expression of support so no worries there. While I read the thread daily, I don't contribute much simply because of the lack of new information. I'm fine with whatever happens (whether the thread drops off or stays up top).

I think of this thread as one of those "I'll never forget" bracelets. And I know it means a lot to others whose families have suffered a loss.

It was a brilliant idea to ask the family to post descriptions and stories about Ezra. 4 years on (tomorrow is deathiversary) and I still want to tell about Andie. I want new people to know her and love her.

And yes I find it very comforting 9and upsetting) to go into Live Journal and other websites that post memory pages for her. While I am able to learn more about her through friends tellings I am reassured that they are still thinking of her and missing her.

So may this thread reassure and comfort Ezra's family and friends.

I am feeling relatively strong which is unusual and makes me feel a bit guilty. I suppose I should be doing week long weeping as I have done every year until this one.

I truly think Mudcat helps me focus less on my own sadness. Max should bottle this stuff. He could make a fortune, as it is a very addictive tonic.

Perhaps some missing persons agencies could be brought in to this case, or F.B.I. or C.S.I. or maybe even one of the crime shows on T.V. would take on the task of searching...I know this is not a confirmed homicide, and i do not know how long it takes to be called a "COLD CASE" but there needs to be more effort put into this search.

Like open mike, I'm not sure how appropriate or helpful this might be. Perhaps I am posting this more for the benefit of these many of us who are here holding vigil but not intimately involved.

I'm a psychotherapist, and the link which follows is from the professional literature regarding amiguous loss.   It is definitely dry and somewhat technical. It may be helpful to Meghan and family. And maybe not. If not, simply drop it into "file 13."

The Portland Police found a body in the harbor last night. We are waiting for the results of DNA testing, but they are pretty sure it's our Ezra. While we all suspected this outcome, it's still very hard to have it confirmed. Continued thoughts are greatly appreciated.

The Morse clan gathered for Kendall's birthday. There were a lot of stories and laughs. Some tears. Meghan is hanging on supported by her family. She is loved and cherished by so many but especially her grandfather who adores her. Time will heal; meantime tears and support.
Note to Morse clan - Jonathan looks the best I have ever seen him. He looks great and seems genuinely happy.

Meghan was beautifully dressed and "made up". She had taken the time to make devilled eggs for her grandfather. She is quite remarkable - not surprising really. She is a remarkable young woman. Smart, beautiful, resilient, strong - she is quite remarkable and was long before this this tragedy. Nothing about her is ordinary. And again I think of dignified when I see her now.

The thing about closure it that it does not feel like closure when the "closing" event happens or comes to light. It's like a death, because no matter how hard you work to accept something as inevitable, there is that relentless human quality of hope that has to be murdered by the news that comes. It will only seem like closure later. Right now it's just insult added to injury, not fair, not comprehensible, not part of what the couple knew as what they were as a couple. It's a searing loss.

It's the fire you have to walk though to get to the safe place. Walk there, Meghan, and be brave now, and let your people call you to their safe harbor. It really is there. Just walk right to it, dear. ALL the best of Ezra, all the joy you shared is what will remain after the pain burns off. I'm so sorry this is before you now.

Closure when referred to the loss of a loved one somehow doesn't fit.

Grief for me has been an ongoing process. Just when the sorrow, anger, pain are easing a bit something reminds you of the person lost and you are hit with the full force of the loss again.

But those events become fewer as time passes and you recover quicker from them. Meghan and family still have a long rough road ahead.

She'll see that in your eyes and follow it to harbor. I KNOW this; Hardi and I spent yesterday giving our eyes to about 400 people, and every last one of them that knew us made beelines to us to do another little piece of the hard work: feeling their way through fire.

For those of you who do not know what I mean, it's the instinctive response to relationship when the eyes hold truth and compassion, a knowing without flinching that also sees the inherent strength of the mourner and delights in their fineness instead of offering a "poor you" pity. Yes, poor you, of course, poor you-- but not "Poor you."

Knowing that no matter how hard the blow, they're better than the worst that can be dished out.

Parents and grandparents, who have helped to build that fineness, can offer that from just the eyes, the tone of voice, the way they touch. Even while their own hearts are breaking.

Bereavement is a normal, task-oriented process that we will all experience, and it needs to be addressed in a nonpathologizing manner.

Some important steps in the process are -

sharing the reality of death
sharing the grieving experience
constructing meaningful rituals of remembrance

and

finding closure and moving forward with living.

It can sometimes be therapeutic, as well as healing, for those who have lost a close family member, whether a spouse or child, to write their personal thoughts as they move through their grieving process; some may want to share their writing, while others may choose to keep their work private.

and remember - some forms of 'help' can normalize grief, but for others it can overwhelm them.

Becca, thanks for letting us know this thread has met what I am sure is the goal for many of us, if not all.

The thread has proved a comfort to others who may not have posted too much, as well, who have had their own losses recently and in the past.


I will never forget Ezra: that any one human being on this planet could evoke so much care and so many, varied expressions of that caring is a sign of our connectedness that will always, to me, be linked in my mind as "Ezra." I give thanks for that, and for Ezra.

Selfish as this may sound (please forgive me Meghan, Becca, Kendall, JacquiC, et al) This thread helped me to think more about Andie and rekindled my desire to share her. I should dedicate her Birthday Memorial thread to Ezra.

It was the descriptions of Meghan and Ezra actually, of which I would like to see more. Remembrances of actual events, personality bites, etc. bring Ezra as an individual and Meghan and Ezra as a couple to the fore.

That kind of information, stories, and such will live forever (well as long as mudcat lasts) here. An archive of this loved one that can never be lost.

One idea that has risen repeatedly as I have monitored this thread, is the sense of shared loss, even with most of us not knowing Ezra or Meghan. The same occurs anytime any of us choose to post to ask for good thoughts regarding a loss or trevail.

They touch on each of our individual experiences of loss and as well as our own fears of loss, and the empathy resonates throughout the community, drawing us closer as we recognize our human connection. I have often thought about my sister's struggle with breast cancer and her death as I have read here, and taken time to think and reflect on Ezra and all who loved him. I have thought about how the experience within my family of that terrible time and that terrible loss also brought us together and opened our hearts to one another in ways that we had never before imagined.

I do not believe that there is any inherent meaning in loss, but I do believe we can and ought make meaning from these infinitely painful and frightening experiences that are integral to existence. We have the capacity to find gifts buried in the pain.

As John Donne wrote, "No man is an island. No man stands alone."

Becca and family, especially Meghan, and others who experience tough times or exquisite pain, and then post here to ask for support, also understand that in doing so you give a gift to us who respond or read, and strengthen our connectedness to one another and to the whole.

Beautifully expressed, Janie. Last night, Meghan's aunt and I talked about how Meghan will find new ways and new opportunites through her loss. I wish I had your gift for stating it so simply and elegantly.

The wise women who surround her will help her walk the path. Meghan's life is filled with wise women - Becca, Jacqui, Ezra's mother, Deb, Melissa - all wisely experienced in life's painful and frightening but maybe more importantly in laughing at the worst of it together.

Shortly after my father died, the only thing anyone said to me that helped at all was when a friend said, "You live your life so that if anyone does not know you love him, he is just not paying attention." Ezra knew you loved him. Your sharing your pain and loss is more a gift to one another and to us than you can know.

Meantime, the funeral was attended by a large crowd of people - babies to elderly, black, white, Asian and I don't know what else. It was a simple and moving service followed by a buffet and a toast. The strain of the past two months was on everyone's face.

Time to reflect and move on.

Thoughts during the service we had this eve. included not only Ezra, Meghan, his mom and the whole clan, as I had indicated would be so-- but VT's Andie and Tam, too. A general mood of giving thanks for the mothering and women's side as well as the loss of the individuals themselves. Privately, not aloud, from Hardi and I.

The memorial service went well. We learned a few things about Ezra that we didn't know. One thing that stays with me is his two favourite films. This very modern young man loved The Wizard Of Oz and The Sound Of Music.

I had lunch today with my favorite grand daughter. There was much she wanted to share and discuss with me, the pain and disappointment that the love of her life is gone for ever. I believe it did some good, I'm her favorite man in the whole world and was able to get her to laugh through the tears.
No one can convince her that time will heal the wounds because she is unable to hear that at this point. I take comfort in the fact that time will heal the wounds.

Your good presence will be a reminder of how we can heal, move on, grow with time, if we allow ourselves. I'm sure it's hard for her to see that alone, or with friends her age. It's good for her to be around us old(er) ones who've been knocked around a bit, and are often the better for it.
