CRACKING night with Swarb and Anne Lister on May 21st in Three Cocks, out west of Hay - Swarb's stunning, wonderful music and Anne's songs [- WOW! she holds your heart in her hands with her songs. Book her, club and festival organisers!] The Village Quire added our mite: audience and performers sang 'Happy Birthday' lustily to Martin in the midst of what sounded like a fairly uproarious party via Swarb's speakerphone, and a good time was had by all. What a super way of saying thank you! Cheque for £1050 on its way - hope it will help with the new shower and downstairs loo.
And news that Norma is singing quietly to herself is just amazing.
Hooray!
Thank you, dear friends, one and all.
love
Susie

Well done Four Fools. As ever they always step up and arrange an event to help when needed. Great varied line-up, and we get a chance to have a good listen to each artiste. (Quartz, a great 4 part harmony group; Brian Peters one of the finest anglo concertina players around and also a great singer; plus the one and only Bernard Wrigley. That's something for everyone. I'll be there. Norma and Martin have often been at Four Fools Festivals and club over the years.

Really looking forward to it. And its true the pub has great food and a fine selection of Real Ales (and cider).

Don't miss it if you are in the area. (Crown Hotel, Platt Lane, Wortington, Nr Standish, Wigan).

On a normal Singers Night at Southport's Bothy Folksong Club last evening, raffles, admission money and donations raised £250 which both pleases and touches me. Whilst obviously not a major fund-raising event, it shows the affection in which Norma is held and the enthusiasm for doing something tangible.
Well done to Residents, Floor singers, and audience alike.

Stroud Ceilidhs are well on the way to organising something in June with Ceilidh Band.

It is Rod's band along with Martin Brinsford (the best ceilidh drummer in the land IMNSHO) and two ex-Grand Union members also regulars at Rod's Prince Albert session (Mondays but check on alt format - Stroud).

The venue is not confirmed yet but there doesn't seem to be a problem.

Beofre trading standards "do" me - the tickets for the Herga/NW London benefit concert above are £12, not £10 as I hastily typed

But still good value! You'd pay at least £6 to see any one of the 6 main acts on it, for two 45 minute sets. For £12 you get six star acts for 3 and a half hours! It's a steal!

I can now confirm that the NW London Benefit Concert for Norma (more of a mini-festival really) organised with the support of Herga at their venue will be:

on Sunday 22nd May 2011, from 7pm till 10:30-ish (doors open at 6)
at Pinner Green Social Club, Rickmansworth Road, Pinner Middlesex HA5 3TJ
with the following performers:

Reg Meuross / Craig-Morgan-Robson / Mary Humphreys & Anahata
Jim Causley / Winter-Wilson       / Anne Lister

and yours truly in the role of MC and general fool and bagman.

Minimum donation by way of entry fee: £10 (but expect arms to be twisted, pockets wrung and general mishandling and abuse).

Should be a cracking day

No, I'm serious, Paul. Hearing that song for the first time in a tiny folk club in Hornsea in (I think) 1965, by these four people from just down the road was what really kindled my passion for English folk music. It used to be part of my repertoire for years.

OK, I'll organise something in North Yorks if at all possible....... we've got Martin Carthy on at Kirkby Fleetham Village Hall on April 8th I hope he can still make it.

I'll check with his agent, if he is unlikely to make it we'll use that date for a fund raiser and put Martin on later.

If he can still make it we'll find another date for the fundraiser......any offers of help from performers, organisers or atendees out there would be great.

email me at kffc@live.co.uk it you want to get involved.

Thanks

Paul

This from Doc Rowe, via Facebook. Good news indeed!

We are particularly happy this evening as we had the joy of seeing Norma this afternoon and are delighted to be able to pass on positive news

We picked Martin up at home this morning, clearly more relaxed from being at home , yet understandably exhausted from the past three and half months stress and anxiety.

We were delighted to find Norma her lovely self – soon 'debating' things medical, domestic and traditional although she visibly tired quickly.

She is clearly frustrated from being bed bound for so long and unable to attend to herself. However, we laughed and chatted and laughed, we looked at photographs of her, Martin, the family, the grandchildren, Father Christmas and old times … finally, she watched some of the Waterson River of Song concert that I'd filmed at the Albert Hall in 2007. It was great seeing the undivided attention and obvious enjoyment that this brought despite weariness setting in.

There was a moment's anxiety to hear that there was thought of moving her to Scarborough Hospital. Although Scarborough would be closer to Robin Hoods Bay, it is also acknowledged that Middlesbrough James Cook Hospital is one if the finest when it comes to physiotherapy and this is what Norma now needs! Martin did speak with a doctor and it seems that, since Norma was happy to be in that particular hospital then it could remain so. In fact, soon after, three nurses came in to interrupt the Waterson's concert we were watching, to give Norma 'a twirl around the room' so to speak. We three went off for a cuppa and then spent a little while longer talking with Norma about when she finally comes home and what meals she'd be looking forward to! We left - feeling relieved, overjoyed and assured that our Norma was on her way back to us.

We can't pour enough superlatives on Martin - the lad truly is a hero! Perhaps a rare thing these days, his obvious love and devotion shines through and we are so full of admiration. This is, of course, only equalled by the strength and determination of Norma to fully recover and get back on her feet – albeit literally.

Raise a glass …or two!
