Somewhere, I read that there's a way to search for the Child Ballads that are in the database. I did it successfully once, long ago. For the life of me, I can't remember how it's done. Can somebody clue me in? I usually search for lyrics in the offline version of Digital Tradition, but it would be nice to know how to do it both online and offline. Thanks.

If you know the child number, search for that with the #sign, such as #200 for Gypsy Davy. Since Child numbered 305 ballads, the first 305 numbers are his. After that we added common songs and the Laws collection in no particular order, so useful only after you have found a song and want its relatives.

If you dod not know the number, search as usual, by title or phrase.

Aw, Susan, I thought you'd be the one to answer, but you disappointed me. I swear I saw instructions somewhere in the PC version of the database that told how to pull up a list of all the Child Ballads on the database. Maybe my memory is failing. Thanks for responding, anyhow.

Joe If you search for "#*" you will get a list of all of the numbered songs. Those numbered 1 to 305 will be child. We have 225 of them (in numerous versions) in April. I have been working on adding some of the rest for Oct 97.

Actually, there's a simple way to pull out the Child Ballads. Search for [Child #*]
