Subject: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: Amos Date: 25 Apr 06 - 10:11 AM This is an edited PermaThread™, and all messages posted here are subject to editing and deletion. This thread is intended to serve as a forum about recordings made available by Mudcatters of songs that have been placed in Áine's Mudcat Songbook. Amos is responsible for editing and maintaining this thread. I am happy to report that a little project I have been working on is acheiving its first goals in the form of a new website for Catter entertainment and listening pleasure. The site is Songs from the Mudcat Songbook and a prototype of it is available for your viewing. It presents MP3 recordings of songs that have been written by Mudcatters and placed in Áine's Mudcat Songbook. So far, these are about a dozen recordings of songs I had sent in for Song Challenges, but the Site is open to any recording of any Songbook song by any Catter. About six of these were played on Mudcat Radio long ago. The home page can be found here: Songs from the Mudcat SongbookThe songs are listed on the Song List page (surprisingly enough). The list of titles on the left has corresponding links to the threads the songs came from (if any) on the right. So if you ever wondered what "Incandescent Pickle II", or "The Gentleman's Club" sounded like, now you can find out! Caveats: 1. Although I have speeded it up by normalizing all the graphics to lower resolution, the initial pages still load somewhat slowly, depending on your bandwidth. Using a Cable Modem at home, about 4 seconds. From work, on Windows, about 45-120 seconds. 2. Only those song titles which are bolded on the Song List page have recordings yet. But all of the links to the original threads should work. 3. The recordings suck, some of them. Plans Phase II of this project is to make new recordings for the ones that are poor quality, and add recordings for those not yet made. Phase III is to receive recordings from any other Mudcatters who have recorded their Songbook songs for inclusion on the web site. These two phases will run concurrently. Send 'em in any time. Send me a PM if you need an addy. MP3s can be emailed, also. The site is in Beta trials, so drop by and offer advice on how to improve it. Enjoy, Amos

Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: MMario Date: 25 Apr 06 - 10:51 AM What I've seen looks good Amos; wish I still had access to a recording studio! (tho' you're probably gonna be happier I don't) |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: Peace Date: 25 Apr 06 - 11:22 AM It is remarkable, Amos. Absolutely. |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 25 Apr 06 - 12:07 PM I'm confused. (Actually, people have been telling me I was confused for years!) I know as a fact that my Garden Gnome song, Can't You Stand To Let Him Go? is/was in the Mudcat Songbook. It was from Part 25, the Garden Gnome thread, found HERE I don't find it at your site, in either listing. I'd be happy to record an MP3 and submit it, if in the smallest way encouraged. Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: Amos Date: 25 Apr 06 - 12:35 PM Dave: Make an MP3 and email it to me and I will make a page for it. I thought it too overwhelming to offer to make a page for every song in the Songbook. I listed ones (a) I have mp3s for or (b) I am going to make mp3s for and will add (c) those others provide recordings of, which I will add as they occur. OK? There are thousands of great songs in the song books. This site will only list those for which audio is in the offing. I wish I could do them all! A |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: Amos Date: 25 Apr 06 - 12:47 PM Dave: Yes PLEASE!!! Record it and email it to me. Aside from a couple of Áine's and one cowritten with LEJ, they are all ones I did, which is a lopsided representation, but all I had to work with in setting it up initially. A |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: katlaughing Date: 25 Apr 06 - 01:20 PM Looks as though you've put a lot of work into it. Some of the Quicktimes didn't work; only showed the symbol, but not the slider bar. Also, I think it'd be better of you make the font size bigger for the lyrics. And, please, think about listing the songs in alphabetical order; it'd be much easier to find them that way. It would also be nice to |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 25 Apr 06 - 01:39 PM Yes, PLEASE, alphabetize! Dave Oesterreich |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: Metchosin Date: 25 Apr 06 - 01:47 PM WoW Amos! Wonderful labour of love! Thank you so much! Strange how the song challenges lead to other stuff too. I used the Scientific Bees thread as the inspiration for some cover art for the CD, Agents For Beehive. The album title was originally from a sign regarding a wool supply outlet, but because of Mudcat, that was not where my mind automatically went. |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: Amos Date: 25 Apr 06 - 02:17 PM Thanks for the suggestions, Dave and Kat, very helpful. I will alphabetize the Song List by title. The load time appears to be a function of bandwidth. If you have DSL or cable you'll have better luck than if you are using a phone modem. A |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: Amos Date: 25 Apr 06 - 02:56 PM ALthough a few of the sound files ended up being turned in .mov files for reasons I haven't spotted, most of them are .mp3 files. I believe the display which includes a play bar is a Quicktime widget, though. Let me know if it works for you to play any song, Bill. The soundfile part of the page is the last bit to load and takes th elongest; leave the page up, and watch the load progress bar; when it is finished, the Q symbol should turn into a play bar. A |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: MMario Date: 25 Apr 06 - 04:19 PM well, amos; I'm not complaining - just reporting ;- buthere at my workstation (T1 line) the entire MOAB thread loads faster then does the songlist page. |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: Bill D Date: 25 Apr 06 - 04:58 PM funny, I have 2 applications other than Quicktime that are supposed to play .mov files, but this page won't give me access to the file...it seems to suggest it is streaming...it that the case? Can I download the files? and....I see ONLY Quicktime files. Where are any MP3s? Why does 50 mgs of stuff need to load in order to play a single song? |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 25 Apr 06 - 05:59 PM "half-Texan and half-Irish" - I've always though of Áine as being "all-Texan and all-Irish". Anyway, great work Amos. |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: Amos Date: 25 Apr 06 - 11:01 PM Meanwhile, there are some nice songs to hear, if you have the speed and bandwidth. A |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: katlaughing Date: 26 Apr 06 - 02:42 AM Yes, there are some great and beautiful songs. I just listened to the first one, Across the Miles and Over the Years. I have cable and use WINXP; it took over two minutes to load, so I think it's a good thing you are going to try to do something slightly different. Also, I noticed some slight differences in the typed lyrics and the actual words of the singing: 2nd verse: text says, "Castles of Rome, Gutters of Paris," singing was, "Castles of Paris, Gutter of Rome." 3rd verse: text says "to the far hills of Arcturus" singing was: "to the hills of Arcturus" 4th verse: "song of the ocean, meets the dreams" singing was: "songs of the ocean meet the dreams" Not being picky, just know that I would want to know if I'd missed something like that. I know it's difficult when working with so much material. Thanks for doing this! kat |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: MMario Date: 26 Apr 06 - 08:04 AM yup - it's a lot of labour and a lot of love has gone into it; Thank You Amos - this will be a resource that's treasured! |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: Amos Date: 26 Apr 06 - 10:05 AM The discrepancies between words written and words sung is just routine folkie memory failure, I guess. Well, it'll be treasured, I guess, if I can streamline it a bit so it loads in reasonable time! Otherwise it will useless. A |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: wysiwyg Date: 26 Apr 06 - 10:47 AM I'm looking forward to its resurrection. Maybe in the interim you could whet our appetites with a tracklist posted here, including who is singing what? ~Susan |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: MMario Date: 26 Apr 06 - 10:58 AM Amos - possibly just an option to download rather then streaming the audio? MUCH nicer for those on dial-up (and yes, there are still regions of the country you don't have any other option) |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: Amos Date: 07 May 06 - 08:09 PM OK. Let's try this sucker again! :>) The songlist file was the big horsepill, and I have slashed it to a thin, graceful table, duly alphabetized, with authors. Right now most of the authors is me, but that will change if others care to get some recordings out. The individual song files were in a very byte-intensive AIFF format and are now all compressed to MP3. They still stream, though. To make them rightclick-downloadable, I'd have to hand tailor all the pages over. Which I don't have time for. The sound files as mentioned are crude ones from long ago, but they are bearable. If YOU have SONGS in the MUDCAT SONGBOOK which you can make a sound file of, you may (if you so decide) send it to me and I will make a page and add it to the song index. If you send WAV oir AIFF files I may compress them. If you send analog files on tape or if you send CDs or DAT tapes or minidisks, I will transfer them when I find the time to do it Enjoy. Let me know if you trip over other bugs. Bloody HTML is a life-long hobby! Songs from the Mudcat Songbook -- Welcome page. (Note that only the items in bold on the left have recordings attached. The right hand links all go to the appropriate thread.) A |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 07 May 06 - 08:17 PM Suggestion - please modify the Welcome page title code to indicate just what we are being welcomed to - I have thousands of links which all just say 'Welcome Page' or 'Home Page'......... I tried to submit some of my output to the Mudcat Songbook ages ago - no response - nothing happened..... Robin |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: Nigel Parsons Date: 07 May 06 - 08:19 PM Amos: It may "go without saying", but anything I've posted on the 'Cat, and claimed as my own, can be considered as available. CHEERS Nigel The 'Filk' community seem to have a standard "Blanket Permission" list to allow others to quote their songs (attributed) or use them (attributed, and 'not for profit') Maybe something here may be suitable along similar lines. CHEERS (again) Nigel |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: Amos Date: 07 May 06 - 09:21 PM Robin: Åine has not been on line very often of late, being fully occupied with other activities, but if you leave her a PM perhaps she will get an answer to you next time she comes by. Thanks for the suggestion re the Welcome page. This is not, itself, a song book substitute, but a place to post links to recordings that have been made of songs from the Songbook. All the songs on the SOng List page either have or will have recordings posted, and the existing recordings will be improved as I have time. Anyone who wishes to send me an MP3, AIFF, WAV or CD of a Mudcat Songbook song will have it included on this page. Nigel: the Blanket Permission is a jolly good idea, which I shouldn't have overlooked. Thanks. A |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: Amos Date: 08 May 06 - 01:25 PM I encourage anyone who has made such a recording from some past Challenge invention, or other Songbook contribution, to send it in. Kevin, is it all right with you if I use the White Snow in the Springtime song which Aine recorded for the Mudcat CDs? (I think I remember that...). A |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: Áine Date: 08 May 06 - 06:12 PM Well, damn. You were right, Amos, a stór -- I'm sitting here just a blushin'. ;-) Your page is fabulous. I didn't have any problems accessing anything, so, I guess you fixed all the bugs. It's just great, and I can't wait to hear all the fantastic songs that these crazy 'Catters came up with! Geez, one of these days I may have to get back into the Song Challenge business. Hmmmmm, I wonder how many belly dancing costumes I'd have to sell to get some new html software? Would I have to sell my new belly button ring? (hahahahahaha) Well done, a chara, you're the best. Hogs and snugs, Áine (And Kevin - I just love the 'all Texan/all Irish' quote!) |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: Amos Date: 08 May 06 - 07:41 PM Hell, you can download Mozilla free, and it has a built in Compose which does it all, once you find the buttons. Anyway, there you HAVE it Mudcatters -- the Official Green and Frothy Blessing of Her Own Áine-Self, in black and white. What more could you want? May the Green be with you all, A |

Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: Áine Date: 09 May 06 - 11:03 PM Hi MMario! Yes, I did some belly dancing at Scarby -- and I have the 'blushing bossoms' to prove it (a wee sunburn on the chest). ;-) I had a great time playing my zils in the lanes of the Faire -- it's a very different experience when you're one of the 'insiders'. Amos, my darlin', I think you've reinvigorated the Song Challenge with your web page -- My oh my, what wondrous things shall evolve from all this! Keep writing and singing you crazy 'Catters! All the best, Áine |

Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: Amos Date: 10 Jun 06 - 10:52 AM A very funny story about garden gnomes who had to be dressed for the sake of public decency was posted long ago in Song Challenge 96. And a very funny song, written in response, has now been added to the growing collection of recordings available for your listening pleasure at the Songs from the Mudcat Songbook site. The piece is called The Band Used to Play in the Garden, and it is good for a few grins. Enjoy. A |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: Amos Date: 10 Jun 06 - 01:46 PM And, BY the WAY, all you olde-tyme Song Challengers out there in radio land -- how about recording some of your smashing great songs from Challenges past and sending them in? I really don't want to be left holding the bag like this!! Many thanks to Bert and MMario for starting the ball rolling. A |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: Amos Date: 07 Jul 06 - 10:52 PM A bawdy ballad inspired by Song Challenge 60 has been added to the noble Songlist of the Merry Melodies from the Mudcat Songbook page, relating to the strange tale of passion aided by nasal spray. The song is called The Aisle Where Sildenafil Stands and it can be found on this page. I await the waves of enthusiastic mailings from you Masters of Song out there. Surely, Bert and MM aren't the only ones who survived all the song challenges? A |

(I haven't managed to actually load the whole thing due to a lack of patience.) It's probably lovely, though, and I'm sure other people have the bandwidth. Just not intended for me to access. |
Subject: RE: Songs From the Mudcat Songbook!!!!! From: Amos Date: 19 Jul 06 - 11:30 PM Here is a direct link to a powerful protest song by our own brilliant Bruce Murdoch: Click to play. Jeri, I'm sorry about the damn welcome page. Have you tried going straight to the Song List? It'll get you where you want to go without waiting for the welcome page images; it has one background image which should be light enough for dial-up. A |
