Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Washing Machine Song From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 05 Mar 00 - 04:30 PM warning thread creep - isn't there a humourous song about falling in love at the launderette? I'd like to see the lyrics to that one. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Washing Machine Song From: Jeri Date: 05 Mar 00 - 05:36 PM Philippa - "around and around goes the washing machine" - Jeff Warner does it. The tune has often become firmly lodged in my head, but I never seem to pick up the words. I'm one of those paranoid people who prefers not to publicly post people's e-mail addresses. If you don't have Jeff's e-mail address and would like to ask him, I'll send it to you if you e-mail me or send me a personal message. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Washing Machine Song From: GUEST,Captain Swing Date: 07 Mar 00 - 04:30 PM Philippa You are thinking of 'Laundroloverette' by John Kirkpatrick on his Blue Balloon Album. If get round to it I'll get the record out and write the words down. Captain Swing |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Washing Machine Song From: Mark Cohen Date: 07 Mar 00 - 11:33 PM I also have one called "Launderland", which I thought was in the DT but isn't. It was actually co-written by myself and Sarah Lifton at Camp Harmony 1989. I was just trying to recall the words, and all I have is the first verse and chorus, and then my ginkgo ran out. It's based on Si Kahn's "Aragon Mill," but very loosely. At the north end of town, half a block west of Grand There's a faded old sign and it says "Launderland" But there's no steam at all coming out of the vents 'Cause the washers all broke down, one just stole my 90 cents (CHORUS) And my closet is bare And my hamper's full again Tell me, what will I wear Rinse and spin, rinse and spin If I find the rest of the verses I'll post them, unless somebody asks me not to. Aloha, Mark |

Too many bad dreams last night...anywho...this song isn't very tuneful. It is mostly washing machine sounds that John made with his mouth!!!! I can sing it, hum, it or play it over the telephone. I'm at the office so when I get home today I will work it out if no one else does and tell you what I think the chords are, jeepman. hg |

Subject: ADD: The Washing Line (Dave Paskett) From: RTim Date: 28 Apr 10 - 04:00 PM Dave Paskett's song is actually the one below - and the whole album is wonderful. Tim Radford THE WASHING LINE Dave Paskett from Pasketry 1979 'Twas on a windy morning, when I looked into the garden, I share with the tenants from the flats below. A woman from the ground floor, I hadn't seen around before, Was pegging out the linen, pegging out the linen, Pegging out the linen, On the Washing Line. Well hanging with her undies, there were nappies by the hundreds, There were dresses, there were blouses, but trousers there were none. I was quite relieved to see, a single parent family, Was pegging out the linen, pegging out the linen, Pegging out the linen, Leaving room for me. While stretching up to hang her sheets, her shapely body looked a treat, Set me heart a beating faster when she catched me eye. She smiled at me so neighbourly, to show me hospitality, I asked her in for coffee, I asked her in for coffee, I asked her in for coffee, and then did say. 'If you want some change to stick in the meter Or you need a baby sitter, I'll be pleased to see you anytime night or day, If you want to use my telephone or have a temporary loan Of sugar, if you ever run out, of sugar if you ever run out, Of sugar if you ever want some sugar, call on me.' Well every day she came up to my flat, to borrow this or that, Bringing bowls of sugar back at a lump at a time. I said 'You call so frequently, you might as well be sleeping with me,' She said, 'I thought you'd never ask,' She said, 'I thought you'd never ask,' 'I'll get the baby and move in right away.' Well now the shirts and trousers, intertwine with skirts and blouses, To remind the nosy neighbours, that there's something in the wind, Something in the weather, that'll fling your clothes together. When you're pegging out the linen, pegging out the linen, Pegging out the linen, On the Washing Line. Pegging out the linen, pegging out the linen, Pegging out the linen, On the Washing Line. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Washing Machine Song From: open mike Date: 28 Apr 10 - 05:55 PM here is a video for John Hartford's Washing Machine song... it has a girl (whose clothes must all be in the machine) so you have to be over 18 to watch it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kchV7-sAcI the lyrics are posted in this thread http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=30961&messages=107 |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Washing Machine Song From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 27 Jul 10 - 10:45 PM Thanks for posting the lyrics, RTim, even if it was three months ago. It is refreshing to find a folk song where the baby is an accepted member of the group. It's a nice change from all those dreary ballads where the guy deserts the girl because she's pregnant. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Washing Machine Song From: open mike Date: 18 Feb 11 - 05:14 PM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kchV7-sAcI I believe John also wrote and sang "Gentle on my mind" which is on the flip side of this record. I remember him singing it on the Glen Campbell Show years ago. Glen redid the song and it hit the charts. I still have the John Hartford record around somewhere which I bought years ago for a couple of cents at a local county fair. A local radio station used to bring all their records there they did not want and spread them out on a large table for sale. Those were the days. (i was thinking about another song which includes a wash. mach. Jackson Browne's song that says "Baby's feeling funny in the morning, she has a hard time getting into her jeans, la la la la la la next thing i know she was all moved in and i was buying her a washing machine..." at first i thought the lyrics were about him haveing a hard time getting into her jeans, and then i realized that was not the case!!) |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Washing Machine Song From: reggie miles Date: 24 Mar 11 - 10:37 PM I'll admit that it's a hard song to offer because of all of the sound effects but I've always enjoyed, The Detergents 1965 song, "Leader of the Laundromat" written as a parody of the popular song by the Shangri-las, "Leader of the Pack" [Is he really goin' out with 'er? I don't know. Look, here he comes now. Let's ask 'im. {piano chord} Hey, Murray, is it true Betty's wearin' your ring? Uh-huh. {piano chord} Who's that bangin' on the piano? I don't know. You goin' out with her tonight? You bet yer fur. By the way, where'd ya meet her? ] I met her one day at the Laundromat. [She turned around and smiled at me, ya get the picture? Yes, we see.] And that's when I fell in love with the Leader of the Laundromat {sound of washing machine running} My folks were always putting her down (down, down) Because her laundry came back brown (brown, brown) I don't care if they think she's bad I fell in love cuz she looked so sad I got a date tonight with the Leader of the Laundromat {washing machine runs, sputters, and stalls} [Dang it!!] My dad said "Find a laundry that's new" (find a laundry that's new) How can I tell my baby we're through (tell my baby we're through) Gotta drive right into town I don't care if my shirts are brown I got a date tonight with the Leader of the Laundromat {washing machine runs, sputters, and stalls} [Dang it!!] [When I finally got there, I told her it was all over between us. I'll never forget the hurt and the funny look in her eye. She grabbed my laundry and ran into the street, directly into the path of a runaway garbage truck. I yelled "watch out !, watch out !, watch out !, watch out !, watch ou-u-t !" {screeching brakes, crash, sound of breaking glass and falling metal parts} [Dang it!!] I felt so messy standing there (messy standing there) My daddy's shorts were everywhere (daddy's shorts were everywhere) Tenderly I kissed her goodbye Picked up my clothes, they were finally dry But I won't forget you, oh Leader of the Laundromat {washing machine finally runs smoothly} (oh-oh-oh-oh) {piano chord} (ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh) {piano chord} [Who's that bangin' on the piano? I don't know.] |
