I'm with you re: The Poozies, ollaimh. Superb band. We had them at a local village hall a few years ago, just as Davy Steele was getting sick. He was there with Patsy, and sang 'The Last Trip Home' with them - wonderful!

i love kate rusby's singing and i do not think she's particularily girlie. she's s girl they sometimes sing lke that. i find her very mellow and she has strong traditonal influences. and best of all she played with the POOZIES!!!! one of the great folk nabds of all time. their compliation cd .infinite blue is on my top ten traditiona;/folk cds of all time. but then you have to love patsy seddon and mary macmaster

Kate sells CDs in volumes that most UK folk artists dream of, she sells out at every venue she plays, top musicians are delighted to play for her on her recordings and in her band, why would she care if a few pissers and moaners choose to vent their jealousy on here?

Believe me, Merina, in Sidmouth the amplification at the Kate Rusby concert was way up. This was mentioned by others at the time of the Sidmouth threads in 2004.

Despite this, as I mentioned, my wife and I thought it was one of the best concerts we'd ever been to, Kate Rusby is a real winner, and we'd go to another of her concerts at the drop of a hat.

I'd like to say that my wife and I saw the Kate Rusby concert in Sidmouth in 2004 and it was one of the most fun concerts I've ever been to, (though loud). Kate has a disarming self-deprecating personality on stage. She's proud of being from Yorkshire, and why not? I thought she and her band were delightful, and she has a great voice and some off-beat songs which re-vitalize the tradition, as well as new takes on old songs.

Our first contact with her was listening to Prairie Home Companion, of all things. I could tell from her first words I would probably like her, and I taped her segment. I still think her introduction to the Cobbler's Daughter was classic--- something like "this song was French, but now it sounds like it comes from Yorkshire, like me".

We now have 3 of her CD's--through CAMSCO--and I do have to say she's so much better in concert---so much livelier.   We'd love to go see her anytime if she comes to the US again--or if we have another chance in the UK.

By the way, I also really like Frankie Armstrong-- and June Tabor, especially with Maddy Prior on the first Silly Sisters album--particularly Dame Durden, Burning of Auchidoon, Doffin' Mistress, and Four Loom Weaver---but in fact the entire album is classic.

I also suspect that the other female singers mentioned on this thread are excellent, though I haven't heard them.

Dylan had some moments of excellence, but for a large part
his work is vastly over rated;
like it or not he has become a legend.

Kate Rusby is a pleasantly entertaining performer;
she will obviously never be credited with legendary status.

they each arrived at significantly different times in musical history,
fulfilling entirely different needs for their particular critics and fans.

what on earth is the point of contrasting an comparing them ?

I am reluctant to write to this thread, but feel I must. I have known Kate for many years: she is charming, and her family are friendly and supportive. She has been part of the folk scene since infancy, and has played with the family Ceilidh band since she could hold a fiddle. She's from Yorkshire, is proud of it , and refuses to adopt a false accent on stage. Her publicity machine is her family who produce and promote her. For some reason there is a witch hunt against Kate. If you don't like her performances, so be it, but recognise what she is.

I know Bill Jones too - a charming talented and hard working artist.

I am certain that both girls would wish that these bizarre posts would stop.

It does seem worrying that "girliness" is considered a negative quality. I presume some of you are complaining about whispery tones and so forth, but to call this "girly" comes across as just a tad misogynistic.

There are lots of men out there who similarly "breathe across the mic" as much as sing out (Jim Moray for instance), and it's surely a matter of personal taste - rather than gender - whether you like this kind of sound.

Strangely enough, I've heard the same accusations of a bloodless performance levelled at the wonderful Christine Collister. Certainly not down to lack of vocal impact! Perhaps a dislike of polished technique? I couldn't work out what they didn't like, but I guess it's got to be down to our old friend personal taste again.

Kate's fab, and so are lots of bigger-voiced singers. Vive la difference.

If Kate's voice is "girly" as so many of you say what is wrong with that?
She's a fine young singer - along with many others.
If expressing an opinion on what I deem to be an out of touch attitude by some of you in respect of new and young singers is regarded as sarcasm then so be it.
In the folk clubs and sessions I go to there is always a small group of people who seem to be wary of anything "new" and disparage it.
Even songs by Richard Thomson, Paul Brady and the like are rubbished.
I think it is called being stuck in a time warp.

Women singers don't have to be 'girly'. As an antidote to KR try Frankie Armstrong's CD 'Lovely on the Water' (Fellside FECD151) - now there is a woman who can sing! Ms Armstrong is not afraid of trad. tunes either - she goes for the subtlest and most beautiful tunes and handles them with great skill and artistry. To my mind, this is what folk singing is all about.
Oh yes, and this recording is a fine introduction to the much neglected and much maligned English tradition. And before anyone accuses me of chauvinism or something - not better than anyone elses tradition but wonderful all the same and worthy of respect and thoughtful interpretation.

Nobody should feel that they have to bow out of a discussion on this, or any other, thread. The problem seems to be that some people find it difficult to disagree with an opinion, without making personal references to the sanity, legitimacy, or musical awareness of the person expressing that opinion.

I like Kate Rusby, and Bill Jones. I'm also a fan of Martin Carthy and June Tabor. I don't even object to listening to Robbie Williams, or Gareth Gates, 'tho they are a long way from being my first choice, as a folkie for the last forty years. OOPS, there I go, showing my age.
