Subject: RE: Kate Rusby Overkill From: SteveMansfield Date: 05 Dec 12 - 05:27 AM When I saw this thread I really, really hoped that this was the name of Ms Rusby's new band, where she performs traditional songs in the style of Motorhead. I can't begin to tell you how disappointed I am... Now you mention it I'd be up for hearing that as well. Or maybe the other way round - Lemmy's finest as interpreted by the Barnsley Nightingale and her band, I can just imagine them giving a lovely reading of Ace Of Spades or Overkill ... |

Subject: RE: Kate Rusby Overkill From: Herga Kitty Date: 04 Dec 12 - 10:36 AM I'd just like to clarify that it was CraigS's final para I was agreeing with (possibly), not the whole post. Kate has worked hard to get where she is, and I hope she's enjoying a happy birthday today! Kitty |
Subject: RE: Kate Rusby Overkill From: GUEST,Ed Date: 04 Dec 12 - 04:52 AM I wish someone had picked up on me at 17 I'm sorry? Kate didn't release her first solo album until she was 24, and then on her own label, doing all the work with her family. Billy Bragg got the same treatment Really? What about all his time in the punk band 'Riff Raff', working in a record shop, a spell in the army and time spent as a busker. He was 25 when he made his first album. At the very least get some facts straight. |
Subject: RE: Kate Rusby Overkill From: GUEST,Backwoodsman sans Cookie Date: 04 Dec 12 - 04:26 AM Unnamed GUEST - let you into a little secret.....there's something on the internet called 'Google' that's really clever at finding websites. Go to www.google.co.uk, type 'Kate Rusby' into the search box and click the little magnifying glass symbol. Kate sells CDs in volumes that most UK folk artists dream of, she sells out at every venue she plays, top musicians are delighted to play for her on her recordings and in her band, why would she care if a few pissers and moaners choose to vent their jealousy on here? Jealousy, in any sphere of life, is amongst the ugliest of emotions. |
Subject: RE: Kate Rusby Overkill From: Fossil Date: 04 Dec 12 - 03:43 AM apart from about four at the top (if you load it backwards), all these threads date from 2005. I guess Kate's success since then might have shut up the whinging Yorkshire tykes who can't stand to see a folk artist get some popular success. We have a name for this kind of attitude in NZ (where regrettably, it is quite prevalent) - it's called the "tall poppy syndrome". Think on't. |

Billy Bragg got the same treatment. Nice for them, but it minimises their "life experience". Well reviving a seven year old thread using a guest account, just to slag KR off, is a really excellent way of demonstrating how little you resent her success ... |

I don't resent her success, but I wish someone had picked up on me at 17 and pointed me to a way I could make a living for the rest of my life. Billy Bragg got the same treatment. Nice for them, but it minimises their "life experience". In the same vein as Rosanna's comment, I'll always remember the time when Jo-Ann Kelly said she liked my singing. Subject: RE: Kate Rusby Overkill From: Ron Davies Date: 29 Jan 05 - 07:34 PM Believe me, Merina, in Sidmouth the amplification at the Kate Rusby concert was way up. This was mentioned by others at the time of the Sidmouth threads in 2004. Despite this, as I mentioned, my wife and I thought it was one of the best concerts we'd ever been to, Kate Rusby is a real winner, and we'd go to another of her concerts at the drop of a hat. |

Subject: RE: Kate Rusby Overkill From: Ron Davies Date: 29 Jan 05 - 06:33 AM I'd like to say that my wife and I saw the Kate Rusby concert in Sidmouth in 2004 and it was one of the most fun concerts I've ever been to, (though loud). Kate has a disarming self-deprecating personality on stage. She's proud of being from Yorkshire, and why not? I thought she and her band were delightful, and she has a great voice and some off-beat songs which re-vitalize the tradition, as well as new takes on old songs. Our first contact with her was listening to Prairie Home Companion, of all things. I could tell from her first words I would probably like her, and I taped her segment. I still think her introduction to the Cobbler's Daughter was classic--- something like "this song was French, but now it sounds like it comes from Yorkshire, like me". We now have 3 of her CD's--through CAMSCO--and I do have to say she's so much better in concert---so much livelier. We'd love to go see her anytime if she comes to the US again--or if we have another chance in the UK. By the way, I also really like Frankie Armstrong-- and June Tabor, especially with Maddy Prior on the first Silly Sisters album--particularly Dame Durden, Burning of Auchidoon, Doffin' Mistress, and Four Loom Weaver---but in fact the entire album is classic. I also suspect that the other female singers mentioned on this thread are excellent, though I haven't heard them. Mao was right---let a thousand flowers bloom. |
Subject: RE: Kate Rusby Overkill From: GUEST,future old git Date: 28 Jan 05 - 12:06 AM anyway, if she's got the staying power.. give her career more time to develop beyond the current media attention and popular CD sales success. 10 - 20 years from now there'll probably be a new generation of old gits moaning on about how none of the new female singers are as well matured and authentic as dear old Kate.. |

Subject: RE: Kate Rusby Overkill From: GUEST,punkfolkrocker Date: 26 Jan 05 - 08:43 AM one additional point.. My wife likes many 'girly' singers. She also thinks Dylan is a genius. so is she any more or less a gullible consumer of succesful music industry marketing propaganda.. in either instance..? |
Subject: RE: Kate Rusby Overkill From: GUEST,punkfolkrocker Date: 26 Jan 05 - 07:48 AM being slightly objective.. Dylan had some moments of excellence, but for a large part his work is vastly over rated; like it or not he has become a legend. Kate Rusby is a pleasantly entertaining performer; she will obviously never be credited with legendary status. they each arrived at significantly different times in musical history, fulfilling entirely different needs for their particular critics and fans. what on earth is the point of contrasting an comparing them ? My mate [going through divorce] has a poster of Kate on his bedroom wall... and dreams about 'giving her one..' My wife likes likes many 'girly' singers, and i like some songs by some of them. She also thinks Dylan is a genius. so what..? me.. i can only imagine how good it would be if the Slits reformed and worked on an album of trad folk songs with PJ harvey and Cerys Mathews. |
Subject: RE: Kate Rusby Overkill From: GUEST Date: 26 Jan 05 - 07:31 AM I am reluctant to write to this thread, but feel I must. I have known Kate for many years: she is charming, and her family are friendly and supportive. She has been part of the folk scene since infancy, and has played with the family Ceilidh band since she could hold a fiddle. She's from Yorkshire, is proud of it , and refuses to adopt a false accent on stage. Her publicity machine is her family who produce and promote her. For some reason there is a witch hunt against Kate. If you don't like her performances, so be it, but recognise what she is. I know Bill Jones too - a charming talented and hard working artist. I am certain that both girls would wish that these bizarre posts would stop. |
Subject: RE: Kate Rusby Overkill From: GUEST Date: 26 Jan 05 - 07:17 AM Personally I don't think KR is worthy of tuning Dylans guitar and if she did it'd probably just be in double drop D! |
Subject: RE: Kate Rusby Overkill From: GUEST Date: 26 Jan 05 - 07:15 AM Dylan could sing but more importantly he could write. |
Subject: RE: Kate Rusby Overkill From: shepherdlass Date: 25 Jan 05 - 06:41 PM It does seem worrying that "girliness" is considered a negative quality. I presume some of you are complaining about whispery tones and so forth, but to call this "girly" comes across as just a tad misogynistic. There are lots of men out there who similarly "breathe across the mic" as much as sing out (Jim Moray for instance), and it's surely a matter of personal taste - rather than gender - whether you like this kind of sound. Strangely enough, I've heard the same accusations of a bloodless performance levelled at the wonderful Christine Collister. Certainly not down to lack of vocal impact! Perhaps a dislike of polished technique? I couldn't work out what they didn't like, but I guess it's got to be down to our old friend personal taste again. Kate's fab, and so are lots of bigger-voiced singers. Vive la difference. |

Subject: RE: Kate Rusby Overkill From: Leadfingers Date: 24 Jan 05 - 07:14 PM My only problem with K R is that since she appeared on the scene there are as string of young ladies who sound like K R Clones - this would seem to be the latest fashon in the Folk Industry !! |
Subject: RE: Kate Rusby Overkill From: nager Date: 24 Jan 05 - 07:01 PM I prefer Kate Rusby. If Kate's voice is "girly" as so many of you say what is wrong with that? She's a fine young singer - along with many others. If expressing an opinion on what I deem to be an out of touch attitude by some of you in respect of new and young singers is regarded as sarcasm then so be it. In the folk clubs and sessions I go to there is always a small group of people who seem to be wary of anything "new" and disparage it. Even songs by Richard Thomson, Paul Brady and the like are rubbished. I think it is called being stuck in a time warp. What do you think of Eef Barzelay? |
Subject: RE: Kate Rusby Overkill From: John C. Date: 24 Jan 05 - 05:42 PM Women singers don't have to be 'girly'. As an antidote to KR try Frankie Armstrong's CD 'Lovely on the Water' (Fellside FECD151) - now there is a woman who can sing! Ms Armstrong is not afraid of trad. tunes either - she goes for the subtlest and most beautiful tunes and handles them with great skill and artistry. To my mind, this is what folk singing is all about. Oh yes, and this recording is a fine introduction to the much neglected and much maligned English tradition. And before anyone accuses me of chauvinism or something - not better than anyone elses tradition but wonderful all the same and worthy of respect and thoughtful interpretation. |

Subject: RE: Kate Rusby Overkill From: Maryrrf Date: 21 Jan 05 - 10:17 AM Nager, it is sarastic attitudes and entirely gratuitous personal sneers such as yours that make Mudcat a nasty place. I wouldn't have thought that there was a problem in saying that certain types of voices "weren't to my taste". I've had enough - I think I'll gracefully "bow out" as there's no point to participating in this. |

Subject: RE: Kate Rusby Overkill From: Don(Wyziwyg)T Date: 21 Jan 05 - 02:28 AM Nobody should feel that they have to bow out of a discussion on this, or any other, thread. The problem seems to be that some people find it difficult to disagree with an opinion, without making personal references to the sanity, legitimacy, or musical awareness of the person expressing that opinion. I like Kate Rusby, and Bill Jones. I'm also a fan of Martin Carthy and June Tabor. I don't even object to listening to Robbie Williams, or Gareth Gates, 'tho they are a long way from being my first choice, as a folkie for the last forty years. OOPS, there I go, showing my age. The one thing I don't do, EVER, is to tell anyone he is a fool because his taste in music differs from my own. So to save all of you the time it will take to type your responses, YES, I'm a total prat with no musical taste, and a weak attitude to telling others what you think of their opinions. Daft Innit? Don T. |
Subject: RE: Kate Rusby Overkill From: nager Date: 20 Jan 05 - 10:32 PM ``Little girl voices do seem to be in fashion..'' bit demeaning don't you think to these talented young women. They are not little girls and only someone with a lack of understanding of today's values ie some old fart showing his/her age would make such a statement. Oh, and how are my comments deemed uncivilized compared to some of the nasty stuff written on threads here? I bleieve my comments all relate to the subject and the apparent out of touch with modern day thinking shown by some people here. If this is not valid in this discussion then I will bow out and leave you to carry on holding your own. |
Subject: RE: Kate Rusby Overkill From: Maryrrf Date: 20 Jan 05 - 06:18 PM How is saying that you prefer a strong woman's voice "showing your age" and "sad". What is "sad" is that Mudcat isn't a place where you can have a civilized discussion anymore. |
