Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Scrump Date: 25 Oct 06 - 07:19 AM Ta for that Ross! Some of the things I've got lined up over the next few days are just me going to see things rather than take part in them, apart from a gig on Saturday (can't remember what/where for the mo - might be a private one, I need to check), and rehearsals for different things on the other nights. I'm planning to go and see George P at Wymondley and Fairport in the Plinston, as in Alan's announcement above (those are the 'watch and listen' ones) so if you or any other Mudcatters are going it would be nice to meet up over a beer (at least in Wymondley, don't know what they have in the Plinston, probably keg rubbish but I could be wrong - let's hope I am!) |
Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Ross Date: 25 Oct 06 - 07:05 AM Yeah - Wednesdays are a pain now Everything clashes I used to enjoy going to Alan's singarounds at the Caffeine in Letchworth on Fridays And now Bedford's blooming Wednesday as well What else are you up to? - feel free to post any events on the fred |

It's a shame your sessions are the same night as ours! (But this week maybe just as well for me, as I have musical things on or to go to every night from tonight until next Monday.) |

Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Cathie Date: 25 Oct 06 - 06:18 AM You can be cynical. Some younger busy mothers of the time were only too pleased to have a TV rainbow break. If Rainbow had been on 24/7 I could have learnt to play the guitar then and would be very fast fingered by now. |
Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Ross Date: 25 Oct 06 - 06:07 AM No - I haven't seen Roy since I played guitar for him; at one of his barn dances in June (nough said) Write a book - I don't think I could get to the standards as displayed by Rainbow - the childrens programme: The sketch opens with Zippy peeling a banana..... Zippy: "One skin, two skin, three skin, four " George: "Zippy, where is Bungle?" Zippy: "I think Geoffrey is trying to get him up" We see a view of the door and hear Bungle moaning from behind it. Bungle: "Geoffrey, I can't get it in" Geoffrey: "You managed it last night" Bungle: "I know, lets try it round the Otherway. Ooooooh, I've got it in" Bungle and Geoffrey enter the studio with Bungle carrying a hammer and peg kit Bungle: "Would you stick this on the shelf, George" George: "I can't reach, you'll have to stick it up yourself, Bungle." Geoffrey (to camera) "Hello everyone, today we are talking about playing" Bungle: "Playing with each other, Geoffrey?" Geoffrey: "Yes Bungle, do you have a special friend that you like to play with?" George: "Yesterday we played with each other's balls. Are we going to play with our friend's balls today? Bungle: "Yes, and we can play with our twangers as well." Geoffrey (to camera) "Have you seen Bungles twanger?" Zippy: "Oh I have, I showed him how to pluck with it." Bungle: "It's my plucking instrument." Geoffrey asks the audience if they can pluck like Bungle Zippy: "I can, I'm the best plucker here." George: "And I'm good at banging. My peg's hard isn't it Zippy? Zippy: "Well of course it is, Your peg wouldn't go in if it was soft." Geoffrey: "Let's get back to Bungle's twanger." Bungle (excited) "Oooooh Geoffrey, we could all play with our twangers couldn't we? Let's play the plucking song. Rod and Roger can get their instruments out and Jane has got two lovely Maracas." Singers Rod, Freddy and Jane enter. Freddy: "We could hear you all banging away" Rod: " Banging can be fun." Jane: "Ooooh yes, and I was banging away all last night with Rod and Freddy." Freddy ( looking sad ) "Yes, but it broke my plucking instrument." Rod ( to Jane ) "Do you want to blow on my pipe while I'm twanging away?" Jane: "Oh no, I was banging away with Freddy last night. But would you like to play with my maracas? Zippy: "No, let's just pluck away with our twangers." George: "Yes, it doesn't matter what size our twanger is." Zippy: "I've got a big red one." George: "I've only got a tiny twanger. But it works well and I like to play with it." Geoffrey (to viewers) "Well, have you got your twangers out? And remember, you can bang your balls at the same time. If you haven't got any, ask a friend if you can play with his. Now, let's all play the plucking song." Everyone in studio: "Pluck, pluck, pluck along, we're going to pluck all day." |
Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Cathie Date: 25 Oct 06 - 05:40 AM Have you ever thought of writing a book yourself? Where's Roy (hope this is the right name - long beard, amusing songs, last seen at the morris dancing in Barton) these days? I shall be there as usual tonight tuned ahead - my neice will be in London accompanied my Mark. I somehow think it's going to cost me. |
Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Ross Date: 25 Oct 06 - 03:36 AM Hi all - I finished the book It didn't liven up - what a ghastly bore Luckily, the real thing is a bit more interesting Who'd have thought David Archer's eye would be turned by that old flame Sophie and then his wife Ruth wants to jump in bed with the herdsman, Sam, who chucked his girlfriend Kirsty who works with Helen Archer (whose boyfriend hung himself), and was the ex girlfriend of Tom Archer who trashed a GM crop and lost a brother in a tractor accident whilst going out with Haley (whilst two timing her), who now lives with Roy (who was into rascist attacks - went out with Kate Archer who was a folkie and he still has her baby - she now lives in South Africa with a Zulu shoe maker) Do you surrender? |

Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Ross Date: 23 Oct 06 - 05:20 AM Happy Monday It's open mic this week at the Bull on Wednesday (25th) - all styles seem to appear Message from Theo at Unicorn: North Hertfordshire's favourite Ceilidh Band LAUGHING GRAVY return after the summer break, re-vitalised and refreshed, to offer the very best of English acoustic dance music to the renowned Unicorn Ceilidhs. Based on years of experience, the band's style is firmly rooted in the English tradition, but draws its influences from far and wide. French, Scottish, Welsh and American roots are explored in an eclectic repertoire that gives energy to the dancers, and leads them into the figures and forms of the dances. Featuring fiddle, accordion, melodeon, rhythm guitar and bass, the arrangements combine to keep the dancers up all evening! Caller for the dance is our good friend and most excellent supporter of the Ceilidhs – MALCOLM NORTH. Under Malcolm's spell everybody becomes a better, more athletic dancer – or so it seems! The interval entertainment this month is from local side BALDOCK MIDNIGHT MORRIS. Please note this is a change to the advertised entertainment. Unicorn Ceilidhs take place generally on the last Friday of the month at Hitchin Town Hall, Brand Street, Hitchin. Tickets will also be on sale for our grand New Year's Eve 'BIG CEILIDH' – last year they sold out by November, so get your tickets early! Doors open at 7.30 for an 8.00 p.m. start, with an 11.30 p.m. finish – entry is only £7.50 for adults and £4 for children under 14. Tickets are available at the door, or in advance from 01582 733113 / 724261 There's also a real ale bar, with a selection from the Potton Brewery, and soft drinks. For more information, visit www.unicornceilidhs.org.uk |
Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Scrump Date: 22 Oct 06 - 01:25 PM Apologies for not saying anything earlier, but I've been down in Wales for the past week, in a computer-free zone. I was very sad to hear of Sav's death, and had been planning to meet up with him (he had relocated with his family to south-west Wales from the Herts/Beds area) while I was in the area, only to get the sad news from Alan on the day I arrived there. I was very much looking forward to meeting him again but it was not to be. As Ross says, Sav was a very talented flautist/whistle player, guitarist, singer and songwriter. I last had the great pleasure of playing with him in the band at Broadstairs. He leaves a wife and two young children, which makes his death all the more tragic. I hope some of those who knew him will support Alan's initiative and purchase the CD, which includes contributions by Sav. |
Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Cathie Date: 20 Oct 06 - 06:01 AM I went to Redbourn Folk Club last night It was a great evening - loads of singers & players Some brilliant music Ross was the penultimate show stopper with 3 of his self penned classics. Despite his youthful appearance, too many late nights take their toll and he can lose his thread. |
Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Ross Date: 19 Oct 06 - 08:52 AM I know I'm reading this really boring book by William Smethhurst (?) It's taking ages It covers everything - the death of Grace, Shula on the pill, Nelson's criminality, Doris's death when Gwen whatsit couldn't get up the Pebble Mill Steps any more I've got to the 80's now so perhaps it will liven up It's a great shame about Sav - he did play at Barton with Tam Lin and he was very talented Much better than my knowledge of Brum |
Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: The PA Date: 19 Oct 06 - 08:36 AM The Archers are not from Birmingham, they're from a fictional village taken from the names of Hanbury and Feckenham. The Bull is the Bull at Inkberrow, Lakey Hill is the Lickey Hills, or so the story goes, but everyone has their own ideas. Now you know, how do I know, its my neck of the woods. All the jokes are pics on my e.mail You know alot about Brum have you measured bricks here. Sorry to hear about the man who's died. |
Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Ross Date: 19 Oct 06 - 08:23 AM Sorry Here is a very sad notice from Alan Hewson: I am very sorry to announce the tragic death of Tam Lin/Windward flautist and singer Sav Malbaski in a road accident last week. He will be greatly missed. At the Baldock & Letchworth folk club last night we raised £50 for the Welsh Air Ambulance, Jude, Sav's wife has asked for donation there instead of flowers. I have copies of the 2001 Tam Lin CD "Back on The Road" on which Sav features with some lovely flute, guitar and vocals. He also wrote one of the tunes and one of the songs on the album. Any one who would like a copy, please send me £11.50 made payable to Mad Nanny Music, and the £10 cost of the CD will be donated to the Welsh Air Ambulance. The £1.50 is for postage. Best regards Alan Hewson |

Pub time is 12.30. Spit and sawdust type of place with good food. Workmen/farmer types confined to the bar others in the lounge, good food, used to be the home of Bromsgrove Folk Club, then they built a travel lodge type hotel onto the back of the place, but this hasn't affected the pub at all. The folk club has moved a mile up the road to Bromsgrove Rugby Club. Great building and real ale, they've got Robin Laing in two weeks time, singing and suppin' tonight. Blimey sounds like I'm compiling a guide book !! See ya later - freezin' in Bromsgrove. |
