Subject: RE: BS: Official Guide to Being a Democrat From: kendall Date: 08 Nov 03 - 06:02 AM To some degree, it is true that democrats try to help the less fortunate, then they take unfair advantage of the system. However, does it make sense to burn the barn to kill the rats? It reminds me of this story: A little boy was looking out the window, and he saw one dog humping another. He called his mother and said "Look at that." Mom, being embarrassed, said, "The one on top has an injury, and the one on the bottom is giving it a piggyback ride to the vet." Kid says, "Sure, just like people, you try to help some son of a bitch, and he will stick it up your ass every time." |

Subject: RE: BS: Official Guide to Being a Democrat From: Ebbie Date: 07 Nov 03 - 06:57 PM Guest/ Mars, if you think the democrats overcharge, take a look at what's going on in Iraq. The Houston, Texas-based Halliburton is apparently overcharging the US government between 65 and 75 cents for every gallon of gasoline it sells in Iraq, Waxman and Dingell said in a letter to White House budget director Joshua Bolten. "The overcharging by Halliburton is so extreme that one expert has privately called it 'highway robbery,'" the lawmakers wrote. And here is all that Halliburton has done in response: The head of Halliburton has pleaded with his own employees for help in orchestrating a media campaign in defense of the embattled oil and gas service company facing congressional accusations of overcharging US taxpayers. In an internal memorandum sent out on October 17 and leaked on the Internet this weekend, Halliburton chairman and chief executive officer Dave Lesar asked company workers to write letters to news organizations to "show pride in your work and your co-workers." "Please add your voice to mine, so we can be heard over those who are distorting our efforts," the memo says. "Please write from the heart and use your own words, and, where possible, use first-hand stories." Lesar rattles off a list of Halliburton's achievements, including its help in building US warships during World War II, providing laundry services for American troops in Iraq (news - web sites) and cleaning up 45,000 gallons of spilled oil in the US-occupied country. But the memo does not directly address specific charges leveled by Democratic Congressmen Henry Waxman and John Dingell, who alleged earlier this month that the Houston, Texas-based corporation might be overcharging the US government between 65 and 75 cents for every gallon of gasoline it sells in Iraq. |

Let's face it, all the parties pretty much suck. |

Subject: RE: BS: Official Guide to Being a Democrat From: jimmyt Date: 07 Nov 03 - 04:11 PM jerry you and I are so alike!!! I do exactly the same thing!! I vote for local elections frequently for the best man, and here in the douth lots of time that means the best man is a Democrat. I fund raise for several of them I have made lots of political contributions at the state level for Democrats, It is at the national level that I seem to tend more toward party lines, albiet Republicans. Maybe we are just cancelling each other out? grin jimmyt |

Subject: RE: BS: Official Guide to Being a Democrat From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 07 Nov 03 - 03:10 PM You're right of course, Kendall... certainly on a national level, and most of the time on a state level too. On a local level, I've seen many issues that aren't really Republican or Democrat, and don't relate all that much to the national party platform... things like funding for a new park, or restoration of the old opera house, here in Derby. For me, lines get a little more blurred on the local level, and I can go both ways (politically.) On a state and National level, I vote party line. Jerry |

Subject: RE: BS: Official Guide to Being a Democrat From: Mark Clark Date: 07 Nov 03 - 02:31 PM Well, that's really the thing. When we elect someone we're not just electing the person we see campaigning, we're also electing the person's party, contributors, organization, influences, professional background, family, religious background and any odd tics the person may have. Often, elected officials aren't really as free as they seem to craft new policies. A huge perecentage of any local, state or federal budget is mostly untouchable by current office holders. In many cases debt service is a very large portion, then there are legal requirements for allocating much of the expected revenue. If each of us works to understand and affect the policies of a political party and then works and votes to install elected officials who are committed to the goals of that party, we'll have a better chance of changing government than by selecting "the best man" from campaign speeches. - Mark |

Subject: RE: BS: Official Guide to Being a Democrat From: kendall Date: 06 Nov 03 - 08:52 AM Sure you can vote for the man, but don't forget, that man is governed by his party too, just like the one you don't like. |

Subject: RE: BS: Official Guide to Being a Democrat From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 06 Nov 03 - 08:36 AM The only guideline that makes any sense to me when voting, is vote with your head, not by party line (although most of the time, I vote Democrat.) Unfortunately, with a two party system, it seems to be a waste to vote for the best candidate, if they aren't Republican or Democrat. You can end up taking votes away from the more palatable of the two major party candidates. It's a hard dilemma. I guess it speaks well to the absurdity of the whole business that the only third party candidate who made a significant impact at the polls was Ross Perot. Is dis place weird, or wot? Sometimes I think that politics is the most over-rated parlor game in town. Jerry |

Subject: RE: BS: Official Guide to Being a Democrat From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 06 Nov 03 - 07:26 AM I suppose this is a response to BS: Code of a Good Republican But wilco's list in this thread wasn't exactly entertaining. And it was so generalised it could have been about just about any political party anywhere. I'm sure it would be possible to come up with a whole bunch of funny and cutting stuff about Democrats, just as much about Republicans. Both sets of politicians look pretty weird from here. |

Subject: RE: BS: Official Guide to Being a Democrat From: Mark Clark Date: 05 Nov 03 - 10:05 PM Kendall, That's wonderful. That's very similiar to something I was told back in Chicago in 1964 by my little old Jewish landlord. He wanted to explain the difference between Democrats and Republicans and he told me when the Republicans are in power they steal everything and keep it all for themselves. When the Democrats are in power, they steal everything but spread it around so that everyone gets a little. He was talking about Chicago and Illinois but I'm sure he felt that way about the national parties too. - Mark |

Subject: RE: BS: Official Guide to Being a Democrat From: kendall Date: 05 Nov 03 - 09:48 PM I see this as a feeble attempt to get even for all the truths we have told about republicans. If a republican has a loaf of bread, he will keep the whole damn loaf and still claim to have Christian values. |

Subject: RE: BS: Official Guide to Being a Democrat From: Peace Date: 05 Nov 03 - 09:48 PM Well, folks, when I was much younger I had the honour of doing some singing in the McCarthy Campaign. I had the privilege of living and working in the United States for four or five years, and I love the place. I eventually got to visit about thirty States in the years I was there, and you have got to keep that country safe from its enemies: in this case, it's your government. I think Washington is in the process of being hijacked, and I think that one of the better democracies that ever existed is in danger. I am not an anti-American Canadian. I have too many friends in your country--individuals I've come to know as people--to dislike Americans. Wilco stated something that vaguely resembles a philosophical position. He likes the Republicans. That's all he said, really. I still don't know what the heck he's talking about. Let's you know who voted for Bush, though. And it lets the rest of you know you have a hard road ahead if you want to change your government. Luck to you. |

Subject: RE: BS: Official Guide to Being a Democrat From: GUEST,pdc Date: 05 Nov 03 - 09:31 PM In order to be a true Democrat, you have to be against the Patriot Act. Subject: RE: BS: Official Guide to Being a Democrat From: Susan A-R Date: 05 Nov 03 - 09:17 PM Dialogue? Well, THAT was an interesting way to encourage one. I guess I'd like to believe that we still have a constitution which protects my rights to speech and belief, that people matter more than corporations, that, even though I am a woman with a disability, I still have rights (the repubs I know aren't certain of that) that democracy is best purchased by respect, not a gun, (either the selling of one to the guy who will offer us the most oil, or aiming one at the guy who won't sell his or her country for a song for our gain.) I am tired of people who make much much more money than I do receiving major tax breaks while we are being told there is not enough money to educate children, provide folks with health care, or feed people. I am tired of paying an arm and a leg for four glaucoma medications here in the US when I could get them at a much more reasonable cost two hours away in Canada. I am none too happy about having acid rain ruin the maple crop, screw up the water in Lake Champlain, and blacken the snow while the Republican Administration merrily relaxes restrictions on coal burning plants. Usually I do have a sense of humor, but it's wearing thin these days when I am told that my concerns are unreasonable. Funny how that is. I do know a few really good Bush jokes, but perhaps they wouldn't find a receptive audience on this thread. I am tired of being called names and denegrated for hol;ding these beliefs. If you want dialogue, don't call me names, tell me why you think that republicans have something to offer, tell me what you believe in, and then maybe we can start talking. I have never gotten truly pissed off on this websited before, but you have the honors. Susan A-R |

Subject: BS: Official Guide to Being a Democrat From: wilco Date: 05 Nov 03 - 07:38 PM 1. Use demagoguery as often as possible, avoiding any dialogue. 2. Look for polarizing positions, and in an adolescent way, attempt to classify all people on one side or the other. 3. Use people, who have the credibility of prefessional wrestlers (Rush Limbaugh, Michael Moore, Hilary Clinton, Pat Robertson) to polarize peoples' positions. Again, an adolescent approach, thats' worked since junior high school. 4. Avoid anything resembling dialogue. You might have to think. |
