It looks like Juan will still be packing quite a punch when it makes landfall in a few hours. I hope all remain out of harm's way and that sailors have found safe waters.

an anthropomorphic invention meaning inflicting herself on a wide variety of mortals, i.e. needing more victims..(I think that's what I mean...how do *I* know what I mean this late at night?)*grin*

Well, here in Moncton, New Brunswick, where the forecast was 50mm of rain and 100 kph winds, "Juan" now stands for I Juannabe a hurricane or the Juan that wasn't. I set my alarm for every two hours last night so I could go outside or at least view it from inside and enjoy it but it never happened. It was the hurricane that blew ! Any accounts from coast ? George ? Anyone ?

Lots of stuff on Atlantic TV today--two deaths in Halifax--both from trees falling on vehicles-- a lot of damage on the historic waterfront (including a restaurant where I ate when I was there in May), zillions of trees down, 100,000 without power.

It sure seems to be concentrated in the Halifax area, and a bit east--I hear Peggy's Cove is a mess. Looking at the storm track, though Gnu, I'm surprised you didn't get more in Moncton. The path seemed to go right through there enroute to Charlottetown PEI which got pasted pretty good also. (But it's election day in PEI so a hurricane trashing the capital is a secondary annoyance. Seems they take their politics seriously).

Let's hope for no more casualties. Halifax's tourism theme is "great disasters" but they don't need any more.

Bill

Some boats were sunk or destroyed in harbour, many at the Charlottetown Yacht Club. I heard reports of at least two vessels down in Halifax Harbour. But fortunately no reports of any lost at sea. Let's hear it for modern weather forecasting, they grounded all the planes and it sounds like smaller vessels were not caught in it.

The Weather Channel last night had Halifax dead in the bull's eye. I hope everyone's okay -- things can be replaced.

Bill...I'm also wondering about places like Mahone Bay and Lunenburg, the Tancook Islands. Any links with complete coverage? It was certainly much worse than anticipated. How far along the coast was there damage?

Gosh. Can't believe it did that much damage just a few hours drive away. I guess I set my alarm for the wrong times because my neighbours reported that it did rain hard and blow between about 12:00h and 02:00h.

Well hit it did and we're still cleaning up. It was the worst storm I've ever experienced. Landfall was at approximately 12:45 am Monday. I thought the roof was going to come off my house several times. The noise was unbelievable. I looked out the window and the rain was coming down in sheets. My backyard is completely wooded and the trees were almost at right angles. I lost three trees but thankfully they all fell away from any property. The power of nature is awesome. It blew a train engine into the harbour in the Bedford Basin. So far 2 people were killed due to falling trees and 2 sailors are missing at sea. Power is still not yet restored to the HRM.

Like Gnu, I am in Moncton NB, but I have a sister and brother in the Halifax region, as well as family across PEI. All are well, although each in Hlfx lost some trees and other minor damage around their properties. My brother has a small boat that he fortunately pulled out of the marina beforehand, as most of the other craft around him were heavily damaged or destroyed. As well, I have family spread across the Island (13 kids in the family!), and none had any problems fortunately.

While any deaths are a tragedy, it was fortunate to have few people passing because of the storm...

Brian.

The city of Halifax is one of the most beautiful old Cities in Canada and it took a devestating blow from Juan. Thousands of stately old trees, public parks and wooded areas that will never be the same. Many are still without power and water.
I am not sure that anyone outside of NS realises the extent of the damage. Very sad to see.

My cousin Dale, who lives near the Northwest Arm, sent me this link of someone's pictures of the damage around Halifax. On Thursday they were still without power at home, but back to usual at the office.

Hurricane Juan

The schooner Larinda was sunk at wharfside. Her owner says that the Navy frigate which was next to her (shown in one of the waterfront jpegs) banged into her while untended. (I've also heard that there were just two sailors tending the lines on the frigate, and they were having some trouble).

The state of emergency has been lifted this morning.
Judging from the number and size of trees that took down lines, I think they did an amazing job of getting the power back up for most of the city within the week. About 10,000 homes in NS are still without power.

Stay tuned for Hurricane Kate...

I was in Halifax this past summer. It is a beautiful place. I can't imagine the damage. The photos tell a lot, but they don't give the whole picture, do they. It must be terrible to know that it's not the kind of thing that will be all better in just a few months or even years.

Thanks so much for posting the pictures. Looks like major hurricane damage to me. Here in Maine we haven't had a direct hit like that in 30 years.

Just struck me that the worst storm ever recorded around here was on October 4.... 1896 ? I think ? The Saxby Gale caused a lot of damage around the Moncton area and southeast N.B. There is a plaque in the Bore Park next to the river marking the high water mark. When I stand eye level with it and look across the river, I get goosebumps and the hair stands up on the back of my neck.

The odd thing was that Saxby, who, I believe, was a retired British naval Captain, predicted the storm months in advance. He could predict weather with an accuracy of a couple of weeks months in advance. Took his secret to his grave. Although, I sometimes wonder if there are those who can still do the same. For instance, I take nature hikes in an area under sylviculture by the Irving's (one of the world's richest families before high tech). Some thirty years ago, they did a lot of work ditching and raising roads and replacing culverts with larger ones. We had heckish winters and summers for a few years after with lots of snow that didn't melt until spring and summer rain after rain. The bad news is that last week I toured most of the main road in this area and found that they recently did the same thing.

The radio says Kate is on her way to NF, 500km off Cape Ray as I type. Pray she blows out or veers off before getting close to the Rock.

The number of trees destoyed in the "City of Trees" numbers in the thousands. Point Pleasant Park is devestated. Not a word of concern from Chretin and platitudes from the rest. If this disaster had hit anywhere else in Canada High ranking Pols would be falling over themselves to promise assistance.
Hundreds of Fisherman have lost everything, peop[le are still without power and water, many businesses are severly damaged, propert damage is in the millions and where is Jean ? A shameful lack of concern for the people of Halifax and Nova Scotia.

So who are you, Guest? Are you there?

Umm, they sent in the army on the second day. Who cares what the suits promise??? And although Chretien has been shamefully absent, PM-in-waiting Paul Martin has been there--we hope that his interest will translate into relief funding when, or before, he takes power.

One thing that I found a bit of a joke was Stephen Harper of all people, (leader of the federal Opposition) lecturing the government on the very day after the hurricane, asking how much money they would commit to send. Mr Harper didn't make a big hit when he visited Halifax a couple of years ago to complain about the Maritime "culture of dependency" on federal handouts. This has to be the first time he's asked them to send more.

I agree though, that the disaster has fallen off the media radar rather quickly considering the amount of damage. It's literally become last week's news. No really new developments, since thankfully Hurricane Kate didn't go that way.

Paul Marin is neither a Federal Minister or my MP. I do think the PM should have come to Halifax. Yes, the army did come and were of great assistance. But I just feel that the rest of the country let us down a bit and I feel badly about it. You are right on about Stephen Harper too.

I honestly don't think that many people in the rest of the country realize the amount of damage and hardship this hurricane has caused. I've learned more from this thread than I have from the media. The PM should have been there. This is a very big deal. If one must try to compare bad things to decide what's worth talking about, I think this fits into the category of the forest fires out west, or the power outage in August, both of which got much more attention over a longer period of time. Maybe (just maybe) part of the reason is that we know Why this happened. Some events have Reasons that need to be discussed.

I agree that this disaster has been neglected in the rest of the country...but why? is it because of where it happened ? ( that is my guess) or is it because, as you suggest, it is explainable. As a Nova Scotian I have always felt somewhat ignored by Canada and that the views of people like Stephen Harper are the dominant view of Atlantic Canadians. Sometimes I could just weep for what has happened to this beautiful place, my home, not because it happened, but because the vast majority of my countrymen don't care that it happened.
I wish that all Canadians could come here to Nova Scotia, see what a jewel it is and how grand the people. I just feel so hurt that we are so ignored.
The damage here is huge, to both land and spirit..the land by hurricane, the spirit by neglect. But we will get on and be who we are.
