Subject: Folklore: A. L. Lloyd on You Tube From: GUEST,Warren Fahey Date: 04 Jul 12 - 11:19 PM Having just watched the 8 part series 'The Ballad of Ewan MacColl' (BBC) on You Tube I am wondering about similar films on Bert Lloyd. I am aware of the Australian documentary (ABC) but there doesn't seem to be anything else available - which I find curious. Having read Dave Arthur's excellent 'Bert' (Pluto Press) I know he did several television appearances but where are they? I am also about to view the Folk Britannia series on You Tube as I know there's some segments with Ewan - hopefully Bert will pop up there? Warren Fahey www.warrenfahey.com Australian Folklore Unit |
Subject: RE: A. L. Lloyd on You Tube ? From: Dave Hanson Date: 05 Jul 12 - 04:52 AM I don't know of any films about Bert himself but there is a film, BBC I think, of Berts extended visit with Doc Watson, I have it on VHS video. Dave H |
Subject: RE: A. L. Lloyd on You Tube ? From: Dave Sutherland Date: 05 Jul 12 - 07:40 AM There was an excellent tribute a year or so after he died on Channel 4 entitled "Bert". There was a feature on him in BBC2's "The Other Music" and he made another programme for BBC in the late sixties, the title of which I forget, but it included performances form Birtley Folk Club. Whether any are on You Tube I don't know. |
Subject: RE: A. L. Lloyd on You Tube ? From: GUEST,Derek Schofield Date: 05 Jul 12 - 10:21 AM From memory, he did a film in the early 70s (or late 60s) on industrial folk music (including Birtley), then films on American music (including Doc Watson), Hungarian/Romanian music in about 1979/80, Scottish Gaelic. Footage from all were used in the film Bert that Dave S. mentions above. Certainly the later films were made by Barrie Gavin. Derek |

Subject: RE: A. L. Lloyd on You Tube ? From: Owen Woodson Date: 05 Jul 12 - 11:27 AM Bert also made a film about British (English?)calendar customs, the name of which I can't recall. I do recall it showed some excellent footage of the annual TUC May Day march through the centre of Liverpool. In fact it even featured the sandwich board evangelist who used to hang about in Lord Street and who once appeared in an edition of the Liver Birds. The one on Rumanian music was called Song of Maramures. I can't recall a film specifically on Hungarian music, but he did a marvellous programme on Bartok's folkmusic collecting (which I suppose amounts to the same thing) called the Miraculous Circumstance. Pun on The Miraculous Mandarin perhaps? Dunno, but I wish BBC 4 would show them again. |
Subject: RE: A. L. Lloyd on You Tube ? From: ChrisJBrady Date: 05 Jul 12 - 11:31 AM There's footage of A.L.Lloyd on the Alan Lomax Archives at: http://www.culturalequity.org/ http://www.youtube.com/user/AlanLomaxArchive Then there's his appearance in the 1950s film 'Moby Dick' giving a creditable performance of singing a real sea chanty / shanty or two. From: http://www.folkradio.co.uk/2011/07/a-l-lloyd-bramble-briars-and-beams-of-the-sun/ Probably one of the best depictions of sea chanties / shanties as working songs on a windjammer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=hdiFYCUP9oU |

Subject: RE: A. L. Lloyd on You Tube ? From: rich-joy Date: 23 Jan 19 - 05:17 PM This week I saw (on the big screen!), the 1956 film called "Smiley" set in an Aussie bush town and concerning the antics of a loveable young character named Smiley, (featuring the childhood star from Queensland, Colin Peterson, who later became the drummer for The Bee Gees pop group.) The theme song was sung by Shirley Abicair, the subject of a recent thread on the 'Cat. Anyhoo, I was wondering if I might have glimpsed A.L.Lloyd just for a moment, in a scene where local shearers were singing and playing in the bar??? Of course nothing was credited, but that was the case for most of the extras! There's also a documentary about Bela Bartok on YT, called "The Miraculous Circumstance" in 4 parts and though Bert is not seen, he is the Narrator : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NuxyA-me8w Cheers! Subject: RE: A. L. Lloyd on You Tube ? From: Rain Dog Date: 02 Dec 24 - 02:11 PM From The Guardian Barrie Gavin - Prolific director whose TV films on music and the arts constitute an astonishing record of British cultural history over more than six decades "Folk music was an abiding passion. Gavin made some of his greatest films with the folklorist AL Lloyd, on the music of eastern Europe; on the different traditions of the British Isles including the songs and religious music of the Outer Hebrides; and the folk singers and performers of North America including “Doc” Watson, whose work Gavin especially loved. Typically, he turned his affection for Lloyd into a touching film-portrait, Bert (1985)." |
