Subject: Kimiad, by Alan Stivell From: BrunoG Date: 16 May 00 - 06:47 PM Hello Everybody there! It's the first time I write to this site, but I hope to help others in the future... I've heard "Kimiad", by A. Stivell, in a compilation of celtic music made by an italian New Age editor, and I loved it at once!! But in this CD there are not the words (I would like very much to sing and play it) :-( ... Is there anybody there who wants to post the lyrics or tell me a link where I could find them (I've tried many researches in Internet, but I couldn't find anything...)? Many, many thanks in advance! Bruno

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Kimiad, by Alan Stivell From: GUEST,Jonathan Hill Date: 05 Sep 03 - 04:07 PM The song using a similar tune to Twa Corbies is Not Son ar Chistr, but An Alarc'h (spelling!?!) on Olympia. I think I have the words to Kimiad somewhere, full title is something like Kimiad ar Soudard Yauoank, The young soldier's farewell. Jonathan Nice to seee AS still being mentioned in dispatches, I owe him a lot! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Kimiad, by Alan Stivell From: Nerd Date: 05 Sep 03 - 06:35 PM Right you are, Jonathan Hill. Son Ar Chistr (or ev chistr laou) is used in English for Willie's Lady. I believe it was Ray Fisher who first borrowed the tune, and I believe it was Stivell she borrowed it from. I would not be surprised if she were also the singer behind using An Alarc'h for The Twa Corbies. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Kimiad, by Alan Stivell From: Helen Date: 05 Sep 03 - 08:13 PM Hi Marco, Both my AS books were published by Intersong in Paris in the 1980's sometime. There is no information in either book (although I just quickly scanned the Preface in French in the Reflets/A l'Olympia book, using my very limited high schol French) and I can see no information about how he tuned the harp. Someone once told me that he sometimes tunes the harp to a pentatonic scale and this makes some of the more expressive pieces work very well because all of the strings can be played together for example in a glissando and they harmonise with each other, which is not possible if the harp is tuned in the usual way. If you want to know the key signature of any pieces I can tell you that. Can I suggest that you join Mudcat because when you are a member you can use the Personal Messages to write individually to other members. It is free to join and there are other benefits. It is an excellent on-line community and I am sure that you would not regret joining. I would rather correspond with you through Mudcat than via our own emails. Helen |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Kimiad, by Alan Stivell From: Fliss Date: 24 Sep 03 - 05:24 PM I dont log on often, but when I do Ill post another Stivell song. Thats all I have in file Chemins de Terre: "D'abord, Etre, le plus intensémment posssible. I first heard of Stivell in about 72. I saw him at the Dome in Brighton in 76. It was a great concert. The song below is my favourite MARV EO MA MESTREZ Me am eus feunteun, e-barzh kornig ma jardin; Eno ma ven kavet diouzh an noz ha d'ar mintin, Eno ma ven kavet, atristet gant ar glac'har 'Sonjal 'barzh ma mestrez a zo aet d'an douar. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Kimiad, by Alan Stivell From: Fliss Date: 02 Feb 04 - 08:44 PM No but I have it in French and have run that thru http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/tr J'ai une fontaine Dans un coin de mon jardin Là, vous me trouverez Le matin comme le soir Pétrifié de chagrin, Pensant à ma bien-aimée Ma bien-aimée est morte, Je n'éprouve plus aucun plaisir Ma confiance s'est envolée Ainsi que tous mes espoirs. Babel fish translates it roughly: I have a fountain In a corner of my garden there, you will find me the morning like the Petrified evening of sorrow, Thinking of my beloved My beloved died, I do not test more any pleasure My confidence flew away Like all my hopes. Never I had imagined That death can come to remove Me thus My soft, my beloved Sorrows of this world, Rifles and knives, dispatch you , I in requested from you, to finish some with my life dispatch you, I in requested from you, to finish some with my life. That I wing in the other world To join my beloved. I am As a merchant I have a ship to travel on sea. Its completed voyage, It will accost in the islands of the happiness, If the mast had suddenly broken, It would sink. hope this is some help |

Just did a search on Google using "Kimiad lyrics stivell" Just introduced Zoom CD to 2 friends who hadnt heard Stivell before. THey were thrilled with the music. "Le départ du conscrit. Quand par mégarde, un Breton a oublié sa guitare électrique à la maison, il a toujours la ressource de jouer du biniou ou de la bombarde. C'est pas plus mal." Good old Babelfish!! "the departure of the conscript. When by inadvertently, Breton forgot its electric guitar at the house, it has always the resource to play of the bagpipe or of bombards. It is not more badly." slan Fliss |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Kimiad, by Alan Stivell From: Fliss Date: 03 Aug 04 - 05:51 PM Hope this is of use Liam I did a search using - paroles stivell - as the key words Then I used Babelfish to translate the french into English. http://babelfish.altavista.com/tr It hasnt been able to do some words and I have tweaked it a bit. But my french is not that good. It will give you some idea of what it means. Here come time from delivery Far from us any idea from revenge We will keep our friendship with the people of France But we will cut down the ashamed walls which prevent us from looking at the sea the watchtowers which prohibit our closer brothers of Wales to us, the Scots, the Irish. And us, whose name is known goëlands and cormorants, was banished of all the human languages, of all the libraries, of all the terrestrial charts We will open to our hearts peasants and sailor-fishermen with all the people of the planet Earth And we will offer is our eyes to the World pretentious to believe us equal? Is this too much to ask to want to live? We will make fall the rain on the world meurtri And to clean the greasy blood whose the supposedly powerful ones are nourished And to give to drinking with assoiffés of justice And the sheets will push back of Brittany in Spain of Mali in Chile, d'Indochine in Palestine Brittany, center of the inhabited world, you will be a refuge for the driven out birds pétrolés For the women tortured in prison For the bombarded old men Celtie, with the crossing of the people of North And the South, with the borders of the old world and the new world, at the borders of the earth and the sea, in extreme cases of the visible world and the invisible world... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Kimiad, by Alan Stivell From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Aug 04 - 12:19 PM I have tried to render the above song into a more idiomatic (and hopefully more poetic) English (though I'm afraid it's still not singable): DELIVERANCE The time of deliverance is coming. Far from us any idea of revenge. We will keep our friendship with the people of France, But we will tear down the shameful walls That block our view to the sea, The watchtowers that barricade us from our nearer brothers In Wales, in Scotland, and in Ireland; And we, whose name, known to gulls and cormorants, Was banished from all human languages, From all libraries, from all terrestrial charts-- We will open our hearts, The hearts of peasants and sailor-fishermen, to all the people Of the planet Earth; And we will offer our eyes to the world. Is it pretentious to believe ourselves equal? Is it too much to ask, to want to live? We will make the rain fall on the wounded world And wash away the greasy blood that nourishes The so-called powerful ones, And give a drink to those thirsty for justice; And the leaves will grow again in Brittany and Spain In Mali and Chile, in Indochina and Palestine. Brittany, center of the inhabited world, you will be a Refuge for exiled petrol-soaked birds, For women tortured in prison, For bombarded old men. Celtia, at the crossroads of the people of North And the South, at the juncture of the Old World and The New World, at the border of the land And the sea, at the limit of the visible world And the invisible world... |
