Subject: Part X - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Áine Date: 23 Jun 01 - 09:37 AM Well, here we go, starting off another 'Additions' thread, and with a great song by one of our Mudcat Masters, Amos. Please check out A Better Way in the Thread Song category of the Songbook. Thanks to Amos for sending it in! -- Áine |
Subject: RE: Part X - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Amos Date: 23 Jun 01 - 03:03 PM My browser can't see anything except the chords on that posting. So I recommend, Dear TGG, that you "View HTML Source" and copy everything between ##Start Cut Here==>## and ##<==End Cut Here##, excluding the stuff in the ##s but capturing everything else between them. Then paste that into a text file or the source you use to post to your book from. What I've done is recasst the whole thing in a simpler HTML strutcure minus all the Microsoft Unbright Amendments and Extensions, so it's globally readable. (Geeze, Bill!!! Why'dya hafta be such a JERK??!!!). ##Start Cut Here==>## A Better Way
(words by A. and D. Jessup
(Tune: J. Rodgers, "In the Jailhouse Now")Well, I knew a nurse named Suzy G She used to be a floozy, G C D7 G
Now that surgeon, Billy Kazer, He's found a better way.
I knew a pharmacist named Sam, He found a better way
There was a shrink named Slatter, He found a better way.
There was an old GP named Harry He found a better way.
There was a candy striper, Nancy She found a better way,
Now I know a doc named Larry He's found a better way.

Subject: RE: Part X - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Áine Date: 07 Jul 01 - 09:17 PM Beautiful, dear Amos -- Do you think we can hear this on MCRadio sometime?? (please, please). So, here ya go, I've re-done A Better Way in an attempt to put in the chords, so let me know if I was successful. And Across the Miles and Over the Years has also been added to the Mudcat Songbook. Keep singing, playing, and writing, Áine |
Subject: RE: Part X - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Amos Date: 08 Jul 01 - 02:16 PM The sound file I sent you is a little too rough around the edges for public consumption IMHO. When I get a better rendition done I'll let Max have it, so he can decline in his own inimitable way to give it air time!! :>) I'm still waiting for him to play Moon on the Hill. And for a tape from a certain Goddess concerning both Belfast and the year-old Child of Erin, still to see (hear?) the light of day.... Love, A |

Subject: RE: Part X - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Áine Date: 05 Aug 01 - 12:23 PM Dear Roger and Kevin, Sorry that it took me so long to put your wonderful songs in the Book; but, I plead weeks of severe back pain, making it difficult for me to sit in my office chair. Mea ouch culpa . . . However, the good news is that The Monkey Parade? and The Dinosaurs . . . are now part of the Songbook. Thanks to you both for yet more great additions to the great Mudcat Song collection! All the best, Áine |
Subject: RE: Part X - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Pinetop Slim Date: 05 Aug 01 - 01:43 PM I'd be flattered if the following could make it to the MC songbook. TOO MANY ROOSTERS, by Mark Flanagan (Pinetop Slim) 1. Oh he played the pied piper when his hammer did ring Come along, we'll make beautiful things With adze, planes and drawknives, turned rough walnut blocks Into fiddles and grandfather's clocks But one thing he always kept simple 'Twas a long narrow box made of pine I don't need a yacht to cross Jordan This old-fashioned boat will do fine Chorus: He saw too many roosters a-fightin' He saw too many nights through moonshine Two-hundred-eight souls rode his boats across Jordan And you know they can't leave him behind 2. Now some folks who had snubbed him cause he raised so much hell Looked to heav'n when they asked if he'd sell That long narrow pine box, for a dear loved one Whose hard work on this good earth was done He'd never say no to a neighbor Least not when the lord's called one home Just pay me for the board and the labor The next one I'll build as my own Cho. 3. As his name spread around, a lot of plain-livin' folks Sought the man who built old-fashioned boats Keep it simple and rough, no fancies nor frills Match my coffin to my life in these hills In time, his saw's song fell silent And sorrow soaked me right to the bone He said son it's no time to be cryin' Finish the boat that will carry me home Cho. Add: Lord, please make room for number two-hundred nine. |

Subject: RE: Part X - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Áine Date: 12 Aug 01 - 01:50 PM Hey Pinetop Slim, I bet you thought that I'd forgotten to put your song in the Book, right? Well, I did, kinda. I made a page for it, put your song on it, put the title on the index page . . . and think forgot to upload everything. Duh! Oh well, I've put it right now, and Too Many Roosters is in the Tome for good and all. Thanks for letting all the 'Cats enjoy it. Please, please send more, OK? -- Áine |
Subject: RE: Part X - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Amos Date: 12 Aug 01 - 11:07 PM Slim -- A fine song. Very touching. Has it a tune? A. |
Subject: RE: Part X - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Pinetop Slim Date: 13 Aug 01 - 01:48 PM Thanks for the kind words. Has tune. Can probably crank out a midi, but not sure where to send it. |
Subject: RE: Part X - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Áine Date: 14 Aug 01 - 03:28 PM Dear Pinetop Slim, Click here to go to Alan's Mudcat Midi Page for info on posting the midi file to your song(s). You can also get to the same place by going up to the top of this page, clicking on the button next to the 'Quick Links' box, and looking at the drop-down menu. -- Áine |
Subject: RE: Part X - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Áine Date: 14 Aug 01 - 03:37 PM Alrightey, Mudcatters! I've got four more songs that I just put in the Mudcat Songbook. I admit that I'm still playing catch up with your songs, so please, please, if you haven't seen your creation show up in the Book yet, let me know and/or resend it to me at doireanne@yahoo.com -- but, please do not send your songs as attachments (I'm a little leery of 'catching' a virus) -- please send them as inline text (i.e., type 'em out for me). Thanks to all of you for making the Songbook such a wonderful and exciting thing to be a part of! Now for the latest wonderful additions to the Tome:
Céad Míile Fáilte and The Cuckoo Fleadh by Pinetop Slim |
Subject: RE: Part X - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Áine Date: 14 Aug 01 - 04:18 PM And here's yet another song that'll get you 'Catters thinking -- It's from ScottyG, a 'newish' 'Catter. And he's got something to say to us 'oldtimers' that we all really should listen to. So, cast your minds back to when you first came on the Mudcat and that first tentative post you ever wrote here . . . then go and read ScottyG's Ballad of A Would-Be Mudcatter. ScottyG - I think this is a brilliant way of expressing yourself and what you think -- Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Mudcat! I sure hope you keep on coming back and sharing your other songs and thoughts with us. And be sure to write something for the Song Challenge!, OK? Keep playing, singing and writing, Áine |
Subject: RE: Part X - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Trapper Date: 14 Aug 01 - 05:44 PM Hmmm... mudcat hiccuped... plus, it doesn't seem to understand the PRE tag! Would some kindly MudElf please delete my two entries above and keep THIS one!

Subject: RE: Part X - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Amos Date: 15 Aug 01 - 12:18 AM ScottyG, GREAT opening song!! So... let's see more of your talent around here! Welcome to the Mudcat and apologies for the slow greeting. You can blame it on Catspaw -- he's been in the hands of medical people and you know what that does to a guy. It took him a week after he got home just to start farting again. Now, as part of your membership here, remember that if you ever feel just TOO picked on and under-estimated, you can always fill in an application for admission to the Neil Young Center for theTerminally Screwed. But I think you're showing too much spirit for such desperate measures just yet!!!! :>) Good to have you around! Regards, Amos |
Subject: RE: Part X - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Áine Date: 16 Aug 01 - 12:37 AM Hey Trapper, here ya go, Bouncing on the Bed is now in the Book. If this was a Challenge! song, I'd give it a Sheila-na-Gig award for sure. ;-) I'd love to hear it sometime. Thanks for another great song to make us smile. All the best, Áine |

Subject: RE: Part X - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Áine Date: 15 Nov 01 - 01:43 PM Well, dear Micca followed my advice and 're-reminded' me of a song that he'd sent in for the Songbook back in October. I've have made three low bows in his general direction; and, of course, I've added his lovely, soul-stirring song, Lady of the Darkness to the Mudcat Songbook. Thank you, Micca, for rattling my cage and making my synapses synap! And if I've lost anyone else's song in the 'ether of my mind', please, please, please let me know. -- Áine |

Subject: RE: Part X - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Áine Date: 27 Nov 01 - 11:13 PM Here's a song that Shimbo Darktree sent to me back in August -- The Blackboard Singer -- very interesting song, so check it out. I'm still in 'catch-up' mode as far as finding all the songs that you 'Cats have sent me. Please, please be patient, 'cuz I'm working on it. ;-) -- Áine |

Subject: RE: Part X - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Áine Date: 10 Dec 01 - 09:29 AM Matthew Edwards sent in a wonderful song, Singing Voices, that he sang at the Manchester Mudcat Meet last weekend. To quote Matthew, his song '. . . celebrates the pleasure that singing bestows, and the power that there is in song to overcome troubles, and find contentment and happiness.' Exactly the sentiment behind the Mudcat Songbook!! Well done, Matthew, and thanks for sharing your song with us all. -- Áine |

Subject: RE: Part X - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Amos Date: 23 Mar 02 - 03:17 PM On another subject, altogether, if you ever wonder why people sometimes vanish before your very eyes, here's a partial explanation of mythic bent:
The Battle of Inner Shmuck and Inner BitchHe was such a man, he was calm and cool, She was fire and air mixed with light and song, Well, they danced and they dreamed, and they wrote sweet prose But the time caught up with them, as time surely will, His head was whirling, he was out of time, Well they glared and they pouted and they put up screens, It was Cosmic tumult, like a monsoon storm, Well the shaking and the glaring just kept mounting higher, And he reared back high and he leaned down low, Well that chord went deeper than they'd ever been, Well they looked at each other, and they'd plumb forgot It startled all the monkeys, and the ring-tail coons, When the sun came up they had both moved on, They can still hear the laughter, and that cosmic tune, Regards, A |
