Subject: MudMeet Groningen From: Herma Date: 04 May 03 - 06:40 PM Back Home again........... Just wanted to say I really had a lovely time in Groningen with all of you on Saturday ... So sorry I couldn't stay on, but will try very hard to be there (wherever) next year.... Great to see Susanne again and to meet all the other people whose contributions to Threads I often read, but whom I never met before! And thank you Letty, for your hospitality! Maybe I'll see some of you somewhere around before the next meeting takes place, will be going to some UK festivals this summer, so who knows.. If you're ever in the area..(The Hague)...give me a shout! All the very best, see you again!!! Herma |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Susanne (skw) Date: 04 May 03 - 07:18 PM Good to see you again, Herma! (Not to mention Letty, Eric, Greg, Pat & Richard, and Andreas, and all those Mudcatters I met for the first time this year.) Me and the goat's cheese got home in under four hours, to find that the cat had used my absence to roll in wet plaster (or something) and his fur was white in inappropriate places ... What a mess! Anyway, if you think Saturday was wonderful you don't know what you were missing the next morning: rising late to the truly marvellous hospitality Letty's parents extended to us at their home in Assen. The brunch prepared for us by Letty's mother and her friend was sheer delight! Just when we thought it was time for a little music in the sun-drenched back garden the soup was served. (Of course, this did nothing to stop the music ...) Hope all of you have got home safely so far, and the Yorkshire, Munich and Friedberg (Hessen) contingents will, in time. |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: mooman Date: 05 May 03 - 03:28 AM What a great weekend! Thank you so much Letty for organizing a wonderful Gathering and to all involved, especialle Abe and Janny and Willem for their hospitality. The Good Lady McMoo and I enjoyed ourselves immensely. The music was superb throughout and the company as well. It was great to meet old friends and make some new ones and thank you to the weather as well for such a good day for Sunday and the brunch. I am sure The Viking will post up the "official record" of events once he gets home and I would like to jeopardize the reading of that fine journal by saying more at this point, particularly concerning the Viking/Skipjack K8 nocturnal activities! Thanks Letty and everyone involved for a terrific weekend! Love moo (Richard) |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: mooman Date: 05 May 03 - 03:31 AM I would not like to jeopardize! (well I would but....!) moo |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Herma Date: 05 May 03 - 03:38 AM Thank You! Susanne for drawing me such a clear picture of what I've missed ----even more sorry now!!:-)) Happy to hear the cheese got home allright...and sorry for the warm welcome your cat gave you...pets got such subtle ways to remind us that they were left alone.... Wonder if Greg's dog gave him a likewise surprise, he told me he/she used to eat their Wellington's, who knows what he's found on his return... |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 05 May 03 - 07:31 AM It was a lovely weekend indeed, I had great fun myself and sustained only minor injuries! More later? (yawn!) Letty |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Wolfgang Date: 05 May 03 - 11:25 AM Big thanks to Letty for organising and hospitality. A heartfelt goodbye to all those I couldn't say a personal goodbye. I went to see my cousin on Sunday and so had to miss the sunday morning and afternoon action. Those of you who recollect what I did on Saturday (Sunday morning) between 12.00pm and 2 am will know why I couldn't say goodbye on Saturday night. The most international song done was when the Dutch participants sang Wat zullen we drinken (What shall we drink) of the Bots. That has been a hit in Germany too, has been the tune to which Martin Carthy sang 'Willie's lady' and comes originally from Brittany. And I have reheard a beautiful German love song for the first time since some decades. I'll post it if I find the lyrics. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Susanne (skw) Date: 05 May 03 - 06:51 PM Unfortunately, everybody agreed with the sentiments of Was wollen wir trinken - but nobody could remember the entire lyrics ... |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Skipjack K8 Date: 05 May 03 - 07:17 PM Oh baby, am I tired? Just regained Skipjack Towers a trice before midnight on Day 4, having nursemaided that Viking back into the bosom of his family. I won't second guess what pearls of truth that Norse scribe will trot out; suffice to give it up for beautiful Letty, and her wonderful family, Abe, Janny and Willem the Moose. Damn, that was a mighty fine time Greg |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 06 May 03 - 02:55 AM Was wollen wir trinken: tune and entire lyrics in German are here. A lovely stay, I'm still recovering. My ode to Letty will be posted soon; I'm sitting here at work and have forgotten my notes. Wilfried |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 06 May 03 - 03:09 AM And the Dutch version is here. To limitate the findings search Google with "Wat zullen we drinken zeven dagen lang" (quotation marks essential). So you only get 6 pages. Wilfried |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: EtV@work Date: 06 May 03 - 03:38 AM Oi !! you skipjack, keep your hands off'n my bride to be!! I wasn't nursed, more the other way round. (if he comes round here-I'll say.."Oi you, keep your hands off'n my bride to be) More lies/stories later. |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 06 May 03 - 08:37 AM I've already seen some lovely pictures that Glen and Ron sent me. Nice one of Wolfgang-collapsed-on-a-pile-of-pillows. I'm eagerly awaiting more incriminating evidence! Still recovering, I can't write a report just yet. Eric, remind me to sleep on the floor next time I get drunk, so I won't flatten you again. Letty |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: GUEST,EtV@work Date: 06 May 03 - 09:33 AM It will be my pleasure Letty, but please don't sleep between me and Skipjack, as we've vowed nothing will ever come between us again after we squashed the sandwiches between us on the train. What a wonderful time, these are the best of days. Words are not enough to express all the wonderful things, done this weekend, the wonderful people, hospitality and friendship, so exageration and lies will have to do when I get the time as I'm at school right now and supposed to be working! |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 06 May 03 - 10:29 AM Strange tidings, skipjack - the Viking has a family in whose bosom he is welcome? I thought you had him tipped off in King Haakons longboat and fixed him with his plait on his oar ... or in the scuppers with a hose pipe on him ... This reminds of a song our Dutch friends performed about the men with beards on board, which suited especially the elder male specimens of the participants. I must confess that I enjoyed it more than What shall we drink, since my third name Corneel = Cornelius is mentioned. Oh the memories of those wonderful days! Especially Patricia's song about her old town. I reaaly started to cry, and didn't know why ... [hey, a rhyme!] Without music the soul will wither, and meeting you all was the best medicine. Wilfried (knocking off work) |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Susanne (skw) Date: 06 May 03 - 08:42 PM Sandwiches, Eric??? I thought it was a Viking that got squashed on the train ... Anyway, having sampled Dutch hospitality we now know how Dutch ladies manage to acquire their size! (A case of throwing stones in the glass house, I'm afraid, and entirely unfair on the fair Letty who is a slender reed compared to me ...) Incidentally, did anyone happen to find anywhere a blue minidisc with a programme about the German singer Ernst Busch? I'd love to get it back but can't imagine where I lost it. Probably will turn up in good time, same as Letty's watch! |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: EtV@work Date: 07 May 03 - 03:38 AM The sandwiches were provided by the fair Letty for the return trip, Greg and I went on to Lieden for the afternoon to see some friends. Have not found a mini disc.Letty's watch turned up, where she had left it!! (By Willem's PC)What a great time !!!! I haven't really come down from it, but have been confronted with the reality of back to school, so have not yet time to post. |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 07 May 03 - 04:21 AM Judging by the number of posts on this thread, everyone is still recovering!!! Although Wilfried sounds pretty fresh and awake... I think we have created some new mudcatters: my German friends Iris, Frank and Anne are looking forward to coming to Lincolnshire next year (with their lovely gypsy van). My grandfather (the one who's never made music in his entire life, but enjoyed it so hugely that he grabbed a shaky egg!) says thank you again. Did you know he was supposed to leave with Ina at 23h, but refused to go? Today's elderly...Tsk. Letty |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 07 May 03 - 06:19 AM And here my promised Ode To A Ringleader There's a Sally and Nanny and Fanny and Betty, But I prefer a young blonde Letty. Letitia is a name of joy Made all sorrows to destroy It's a name of certain fame, Even beyond the gray green sea In both directions windward and lee Even the Vikings know her name. She holds the fiddle strong and bold, She plays it without limitation And dedicated concentration Imitating a rabbit's snout. [Chorus: How lovely!] So let me end my praise and lift my glass: Dank u wel, mevrouw - Thanks, bonnie lass! [Chorus: Cheers!] as composed and recited on May 3, 2003 at Cleopatra's. I hope, MudGuard has forgiven me now all my sins, but poets are jealous - if one starts writing a poem, the other one can't stop to do the same. It was my first MudMeet, and I must say: It was more than nice to meet you all and hear you playing and singing. And now, methinks, we are all eager to read MudGuard's excellent rhymed chronicle of the memorable event. Come on, boy! Wilfried |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 07 May 03 - 06:31 AM Patience, Wilfried, MudGuard is still cycling around. Thanks for posting the poem, although I'm not entirely happy with the rabbit reference :-) |
Subject: RE: lyr. add: Ich hab die Nacht From: Wolfgang Date: 07 May 03 - 09:29 AM I said I had reheard a beautiful song in Groningen and I'll post it here. It has a beautiful very old tune which you can find at the site from The translation is mine. Wolfgang

Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Noreen Date: 07 May 03 - 10:09 AM That is beautiful Wolfgang, thank you. (I prefer flow rather than leak, btw) |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Wolfgang Date: 07 May 03 - 11:33 AM We missed you and not only you, Noreen. 'Leak' is verbatim, 'flow' I put in because I too considered it better. 'Rinnen' means a very slow and thin flow, the minimum that is still continuous before it becomes drops. Trickle? Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Noreen Date: 07 May 03 - 11:46 AM Trickle is good. I want to hear more details and see photos, please. Would have loved to have been there with you all. |

Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 07 May 03 - 01:01 PM For Noreen, a few memorable moments: - the manager of Sally O'Brien's asking us back the next day (he offered free food!). Although the DJ was a bit disappointed that he did not get to do his 'thing' (we had to pause the session to give the poor chap a chance) - Wolfgang asleep on a pile of pillows in a corner of the bar, but, when woken, still insisting that he was enjoying himself :-) - the nice mix of songs and tunes, and of different styles: my brother starting off a series of blues tunes, Ron singing Billy Joel, Pat's lovely voice, and yes, Skip and Eric singing beautifully too - the tour guide from the tourist information and her lover, who showed up at the session and stayed - Andreas's lovely poem on Sunday (he'll post it later) - the brunch my mother prepared: although the table was completely full, and despite having soup as a back-up, she persisted in believing she would not have enough food |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Wolfgang Date: 07 May 03 - 01:36 PM That song must have been sung when I was 'enjoying myself' (grin). I'm sure Susanne can improve my attempt, but here ye go: Five sons "I haven't sent them to school I haven't laughed with them they don't play on the street I have sent them to the wild sea to seek their dear father. One died a bitter death the next died from hunger so great the third was hung the fourth remained dead on the sea the fifth floats (?) behind the land." When she now came to the churchyard she called God the heavenly father and prayed all with....(?) that God may forgive her sins and that he may her call home into his kingdom. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Noreen Date: 07 May 03 - 08:24 PM Lovely, thanks, Letty dear! You left out another memorable moment... |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 08 May 03 - 04:53 AM Which one would that be Noreen? I hope you're not referring to the Sunday night... |

I can't vouch for Skip)so believe me when I say I won't ever tell anyone you were rat arsed and that I have the photo's to prove it. |

Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 08 May 03 - 01:44 PM Eric, if you don't tell them about Sunday, I won't tell your partner about our wedding! Seriously, I should consider writing up a report now before you do... :-) Letty |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Noreen Date: 08 May 03 - 02:08 PM Hee hee! Conflicting reports will be interesting. We know that every word eric writes is the truth... but I have my sources, Letty! :0) |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 08 May 03 - 02:09 PM When Skipjack, Eric the Viking, MudGuard and I visited the Westerbork camp (a "Durchgangslager", where Jews, Roma and dissenters were put on transport to the concentration camps during WWII) on Sunday, I played a Dutch version of Leonard Cohen's "The Partisan" in the car, with some very appropriate lyrics, since it was also Remembrance Day. I posted these lyrics here, with a translation, if you are interested. Visiting the Westerbork site on Remembrance day certainly left an impression on me, especially with the haunting music of Chopin coming from the amplified grand piano they had transport to the middle of the forest (and it really is a long walk there!). |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Eric the Viking Date: 08 May 03 - 03:40 PM It was the saddest place I have ever been to.The memorial tiles went on forever, a testament to mans' inhumanity to man. We haven't come very far have we? On a lighter note,Letty, Dawn says it's ok, but you'll have to take my guitars etc and listen to the folk music-no problem there then. I'm glad Max is going along OK-tell him he'll be in trouble if he upsets you. |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 08 May 03 - 07:21 PM Check out this site made by Laurens: pictures from the city tour and from the Saturday night session, plus sounds (on page 6)! Sound 1 is me singing Griogal Cridhe, sound 2 Pat singing Song for Ireland, sound 3 is Ruth, Willem and me playing a Finnish tango, sound 4 the end of Hava Naguila (everyone), sound 5 is Eric (I think) singing Side by side. |

By the way, you see our nice town guide and me (a town guide also) exchanging hints and tricks for doing guided tours in English. Interesting brain cell count, Eric: 1 for you and 2 for skip - him pregnant? By whom? Or may this secret be buried between you both? Wilfried |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: EtV@work Date: 09 May 03 - 10:50 AM Ah Wilfried-I think he's after increasing the gene pool-might be one belonging to Andreas!! Can it be one week ago I was heading for the airport. The time has gone so quickly. Life has not returned to normal yet, I still think I am in the Nederlands (and wish I was) |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 09 May 03 - 11:46 AM I can't believe it's been a week since the meeting either... Maybe I should be writing some stuff down before I forget. What happened last week (abridged), part 1. I arrived in Groningen on Thursday, to help clean my brother's student flat to acceptable adult hygiene levels (we skipped the kitchen cupboards, but I think we got away with it!). After a long night in town (preparation) playing pool (beating the guys, well 2 of them anyway, of course I let Max (later scared away from visiting me by what he described as huge guys standing in the living room, thereby referring to MudGuard, Eric and Skipjack) win), returned home safely and completely sober (honest). The first to arrive in Moose Mansion on Friday was, ever pünktlich as only Germans can be, MudGuard, even though he came by bike! :-) Don't get too impressed: he didn't cycle down all the way from Munich, he took the train as well. Maybe he only cycled five minutes from Groningen station, I don't know. MudGuard joined me when we walked my dog Kerry (who slept in the same room as Eric and Skip and looks like a black sheep, but don't draw any conclusions) through the historical park (English garden style), and we saw a bit of the city centre as well. Groningen is a university city with about 180,000 inhabtants, 25% of whom are under 30: so there's always lots to do, and the pubs flourish. Then it was time to move downtown. We had booked a table at Sally O'Brien's, an Irish pub, and Gerry the manager (who to my surprise is actually Irish, as I always figured that O'Brien's was a fake Irish bar) had promised us we could play after dinner. After ordering a few pints, MudGuard and I were still the only ones present, and I was beginning to worry about the fate of the other mudcatters... A few drinks later, we found out that part of the German delegation (Frank, Iris, Anne and Ute) had indeed arrived in Groningen, but were both stuck in Groningen's infamous one-way system and had forgotten, of all things, to bring their B&B address (!)... After a few phonecalls, Willem and I found out where they were staying, and we were ready to settle down. Although I had forewarned the staff, Sally O'Brien's managed to break EuroGathering (tm) restaurant traditions: not only did the food arrive in the correct order, complete with side dishes, but MudGuard wasn't the last to get served (ok, second last, but still)! During the course of the meal, more mudcatters arrived: Wolfgang and Susanne arrived together, and Mooman was dropped off too. After dinner, we started a session, still a bit hesitant, but slowly gaining confidence and praise from the staff (we had scared the customers away, apparently: it was very quiet and we practically had the bar to ourselves). The only person who was less pleased was the DJ who had been hired to play (overly loud) music that night (well, we HAD told them we were coming, so why bother?). Poor chap. We gave him a break of about half an hour to 45 minutes to do his thing, which gave me the chance to collect Eric and Skipjack from the station. Mooman had already announced them to the bar staff as 'two famous musicians from England', so once they joined us, the session was back online. Gerry the manager was so happy, he offered us food if we could come back the next day. After closing time, we found out how many mudcatters fit into Susanne's car, and went home for coffee (or African rooibos tea all the way from England) and sleep. The dog was very glad to see us. [to be continued] |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 09 May 03 - 12:52 PM What happened last week (abridged), part 2. The next morning. Made Eric his long-awaited uitsmijter, although I forgot the ham. Skipjack was being fussy about his tea again, and Susanne found her way to us as well (she survived sleeping in a car in Groningen's slums, tough lady). Then we went shopping. Well, I usually hear people complain about women spending ages in shops, but the gentlemen S. and E. have turned shopping into an art form :-) Not only did we visit two music shops, but they had to see for themselves if the Dutch Halfords was any different from the English. In the recordshop, we were treated to a short promotional concert by the Jayhawks, who did a signing afterwards (Eric got a signed cd). We emerged from the shops just in time to have some poffertjes (tiny pancakes with lots of sugar) before the tour. By this time, everyone had arrived, so Pat, Glen, Ron, Ken and Herma joined us for sight-seeing. Tour guide Pauline and her bloke Laurens then showed us around Groningen, and she didn't even mind our jokes. We walked about 2 hours, and Laurens took pictures which you can see on the link that I posted a few entries back. We invited them for the session, and sure enough, they came. After the tour, we went back to get our instruments and paid a short visit to Sally O'Brien's again (reservations for group dinner failed: the town was full...). After that, it was on to Cleopatra's, a student bar that we rented for this occasion, complete with musical bar staff (thanks, Willem and Monique) and student prices (coffee: 20cents). While some of us were busy having pizzas or unpacking 5 different bagpipes (Frank), my father Abe (guitar) and his friends Ruth (fiddle) and Ina (clarinet) treated us to a short concert. Together with an accordian player (who was missing, on a workshop for Greek folk music), they form the folk group Étoile du Nord, and they play mainly Scandinavian and Eastern European (gypsy, Klezmer) folk. Ruth showed off her clogs to impress the tourists (she must be the only city dweller left wearing them!). [to be continued] |

Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 09 May 03 - 03:42 PM What happened last week (abridged), part 3. After Étoile du Nord, the session started. This is the part I think is hardest to describe, not only because I can never remember Irish tune titles (except of course for The Mason's Maid, The Lonesome Road to the Well, Jenny Picking Chickens and other famous tunes). There were many highlights, and it's hard to pick a few (and I'm bound to offend people again). The music was so rousing that my old grandfather even joined in with the shaky eggs at one point. I think my own egg is jealous, 'cause I didn't even use it that night. Some songs that were done have been mentioned already: First of all, all instrument players were playing like they've been practising together for years. We had a nice combination of instruments, with Skipjack on box and fiddle, Mooman and Eric on various guitar-shaped instruments (I spotted Eric playing the banjo, I did!), Ken Gilman on fiddle and mandoline, Frank doing a few bagpipes solos, Anne on flute and Iris on recorders. Only one bodhran was spotted and played respectably :-) Ute, who doesn't play an instrument, was forced to undergo a baptism of fire and played a spoons solo during Ryan's Polka! Lady McMoo was in fine voice, and sang a lovely version of Our Town (so nice, that when my mother downloaded the one by Iris DeMent, she was disappointed: she much prefers Lady McMoo's rendition), plus several other songs such as Fisherman's Dream and Song for Ireland. There were a couple of fine German songs, which have been posted, by Iris and Anne. Then there was a brave attempt by the Dutch contingent to revive some of their folk songs (even though those songs are rarely heard and taught, they only came back to us slowly): Al die willen te kaapren varen (sailors have to have beards), Island (fishing near Iceland), Komt vrienden in het ronde (praising the knife-sharpener's job), and Wat zullen we drinken (drinking song). Ron made me very happy by singing my favourite Billy Joel song (She's got a way), and there were more songs I just can't recall right now. Later at night, my brother Willem successfully introduced some blues into the mix (he plays the guitar), and we ended up singing a lot of well-known songs such as House of the Rising Sun and (strangely) Hava Naguila. Monique sang Juliette (Knopfler), and a couple of other songs, and told me afterwards that she thought we were such a polite lot because we had been praising her whereas usually "people just tell me to shut up!". But honestly, she's a fine singer. The session went on quite late (a bit too late for some, but then there was a pile of pillows in the room!), and I think we left at about 2 AM. After a midnight snack on the main square (all night chippy, and everyone mistrusted the snacks-from-the-wall!), we slowly walked home. Poor Wolfgang had to sleep in the kitchen, because he'd been thrown out of his hotel (just a joke: it was just full). [to be continued] |

Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 09 May 03 - 04:41 PM What happened last week (abridged), part 4. Although we were floored, we had to get up fairly on Sunday morning. We had to say goodbye to Wolfgang & (the night before) Herma, but the rest of us went to Assen, a town 27km down the road from Groningen, where Janny (whose major role model in life is Mrs Doyle), Abe and Brigitte were about to serve brunch. Although from every perspective the amount of food was copious, to say the least, my mother was very worried she wouldn't have enough and managed to serve lunch (soup) only a few hours later. The weather was absolutely lovely on Sunday, so we all sat in the garden, chilling and playing a few tunes and songs, and managed not to upset the neighbours. During the course of the day, several 'catters had to leave, and when the group was down to MudGuard, Skipjack, Eric and me, we went to Westerbork, which was impressive, especially on that particular day, I felt. After dinner, we went back to Groningen, spotted a few interesting ships, and had a few drinks to celebrate a good weekend. Oh, and we didn't manage to find any marihuana, which is probably a good thing. :-) [the end, or is it?] |
