Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 10 May 03 - 03:36 AM Hi Letty - Spent an hilarious hour downloading the fine pictures and remembering the events. Give Laurens my thanks. Wilfried |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Herma Date: 10 May 03 - 04:32 AM Letty, Thank you so much for getting me updated on events after I left.... Told you before, will be there next time, hope I have learnt by then how the guitar (that I bought only 3 weeks ago...) works and promise to sort out some of the songs I usually sing... Thanks to Laurens to take those really nice pictures... herma |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 10 May 03 - 04:40 PM BTW, who left a red polo-shirt behind in Moose Mansion? Or is this a sign? Had a gig tonight, and we got a few nuns to dance the polka. Great. Next time, I'll try plugging in my electric fiddle, if only I can get my hands on a cheap(ish) wah wah pedal. Love, Letty |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Susanne (skw) Date: 10 May 03 - 07:31 PM Letty, thanks for your exhausting - sorry, exhaustive report! All I can add is that minidiscs cost twice as much in Holland as in Germany, that our (that is Herma, Wolfgang and me) Chinese meal on Saturday night fully met our expectations - it was great - and that Groningen is a lovely and lively city. I'd love to come back some day - but with you moving to Ireland I may be tempted to go and see you there ... Herma, take a holiday, come and see me and let's practise a few songs for the next gathering! (Which will no doubt be swamped by Yorkshire Mudcatters, so we'll need to do something!) BTW, what make is that polo shirt? I think I've got all the red ones I own, but still ... Does it have a tiny Canadian flag stuck to the collar? |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Susanne (skw) Date: 10 May 03 - 09:44 PM And of course I am terribly ashamed of myself for forgetting Richard's birthday! So, belatedly but still - many happy returns, mooman! |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 11 May 03 - 02:10 AM The label in the red polo shirt reads: Ragman XL made in USA. It might be MudGuard's, is he back in the land of the living yet? |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: GUEST Date: 11 May 03 - 11:39 AM Hello, Susanne - shame on you! Didn't you read the thread Mooman celebrates? So I was late only 1 day. Now I'm sitting in an Internet Café after a guided tour through my home town, drinking beer (but only in tiny glasses) and refreshing my memories by this fine thread. Wilfried |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 11 May 03 - 04:06 PM I've got a stash of photos here (Laurens's, Glen and Ron's, my father's), any idea where I can put them online? Or, if I mail them to Mudcat, how do I put captions on them? Letty, considering brushing her hair more often and losing weight after seeing the photos |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Skipjack K8 Date: 11 May 03 - 04:23 PM Shucks, Letty, we kinda like you that way |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 11 May 03 - 04:38 PM Well, then I'll start with just brushing my hair :-) |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Eric the Viking Date: 11 May 03 - 06:11 PM Three nights and three mornings and three days together and you didn't even voulunteer to do MY hair....Some mail order bride!!! |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 11 May 03 - 07:03 PM Ah, Eric, if I can't do my own hair, how am I supposed to do yours? Here are the photographs my father made: evidence. |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Noreen Date: 11 May 03 - 07:58 PM Lovely pics, Letty, thanks to you and your dad. If you send the link to Pene Azul, he can lift photos and captions for the Mudcat events page. |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: MudGuard Date: 11 May 03 - 08:12 PM Finally made it home some minutes ago - going to bed in another minute. poem will be typed up after I had some sleep... |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 12 May 03 - 02:05 AM Hi MudGuard - May 12! Are you still sleeping? Reise, Reise, der Bäcker von Laboe ist da! (Rise, rise, the baker of Laboe is there! Old German Navy call, bawdy parts left out) Hi Letty - Thanks for the fine pictures; I am still recovering mentally from the event. Wilfried |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 12 May 03 - 08:47 AM Letty's text of the Five Sons seems a little bit neerlandized (?). I give the East Frisian version of 1575 as cited in Zupfgeigebhansl, 160. ed., 1934, pg. 78: 1. Ik hebbe se nich up de Scholen gebracht, Ik hebbe nich einmal över se gelacht, Se gaent nich spelen up der Straten. Ik hebbe se up de wille See gesandt, Eren levesten Vader to söken. 2. Dat eine starf den bittern Dod, Dat ander starf von Hunger so grot, Dat drüdde wort gehangen, Dat verde blef up de wille See dot, Dat vifte flut achter dem Lande. 3. Wan se wol up den Kerkhof quam, Se reip God sinen hemmelschen Vader an Un bedet all mit Flite: Dat em God wolde de Sünde vorgeven Un halen en in sin Rike. Wilfried |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 12 May 03 - 08:54 AM Typed too fast, the title of the songbook is Zupfgeigenhansl. W. |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 12 May 03 - 09:12 AM Wilfried, I did not change these lyrics! There in Plattdeutsch from the Elten region, not East Frisian. Or so I'm told. But I speak only a little West Frisian (born in Ljouwert, or Leeuwarden in proper Dutch). Fryslan boppe! Din lytse poppe. Letty |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 12 May 03 - 09:17 AM There = they are For a nice little site about Frisian and English: click here. Lots of correspondences between the two, as (west-)Frisian is the closest relative of the English language. To prevent thread creep: Shall I put Glen and Ron's pictures online too? Letty |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 12 May 03 - 09:20 AM Please, do! Wilfried |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: MudGuard Date: 12 May 03 - 11:08 AM Ok, here some statements: 1. the red polo shirt can't be mine! I don't wear red polo shirts. And also I do not wear shirts as small as XL... 2. I did not cycle only 5 minutes to Letty, I cycled all the way from Papenburg/Ems 3. No, Wilfried, I have not forgiven you all your sins - I can't, I only know about one (which is forgiven - but not forgotten ;-) ) 4. Thanks to all for saying most of the things I wanted to say on this thread, safes me lots of typing... Thanks, Letty, for organizing that great weekend! |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: MudGuard Date: 12 May 03 - 11:11 AM And here, as promised, the poem. After reading it in Assen, I added a line or two - I marked them here in blue: To Letty In the northernmost town of the Netherlands Came together a big number of musical friends On the first weekend of the month of May In the year of the Lord twothousand and thray We came together because Letty - A young lady who is very pretty - Wrote on the Mudcat: "Come together! I will organize a Euro MudGather!" From Germany, Belgium and the Juu Kay To Groningen we all made our way One rode on the bike, some on the train, Some came by car, and some by plane. When I to the Deliplein did come Letty gave me a hearty welcome. She did also wash my cycling shirt which was full of sweat and full of dirt Some of us did stay at your brother's place Which will be known as Hotel Willem's Palace The place is full of many mooses In every shape and for all uses. In the evening we were in a pub To make music, to drink and for the grub. We played the whistle, guitar and the mandolin, Sung, listened or tuned the violin. Each night at Willem's before falling asleep Greg and Eric were discussing the advantages of sheep Saturday morning Letty tried to find Her watch that had hidden behind The computer where Letty it found After moving all the furniture around. She also found money plenty Of the old Guilders a note of twenty. In the afternoon by a guide we were shown The important places of Groningen town. At the Cleopatra, two students, one of each gender Cared for our thirst by playing bar tender. The one was Willem, Letty's brother And a friend called Monique was the other. Again there was music and many a song We had much fun many hours long. I detected with a very big grief That Wilfried is a little thief I told him of this poem, and after short time He had written and told his own little rhyme Wolfgang did have luck too bad For Saturday night he got no bed He tried every hotel and hostel in town In Willem's kitchen he was thrown. On Sunday morning a big bunch Of us went to Letty's parents for brunch For which we are very grateful I can say after having a mouth full The food prepared by Abe and Janny Was easily enough for twice as many! On Monday morning when I went to unlock My bike I got a mighty shock! It was leaning there against the wall and was not locked, not locked at all! At long last now I am back home safely After cycling through Holland and Germany bravely. I think I speak for Wolfgang and Susanne, For Frank and Iris and Ute und Anne, For Erik the Viking, Skipjack and Ken Herma, Wilfried, Ron and Glen, And for the Dutch group's every member, even if th names of them I can't remember Also for Lady McMoo and Richard And of course for myself, that is MudGuard Thanks, Letty for the splendid organization You are the pride of the Dutch nation! |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Eric the Viking Date: 12 May 03 - 11:59 AM Disgusting, slanderous, how dare you write about me and Greg discussing sheep, would we ever say anything like that? Great stuff Andy, Great to see you,and great fun. By the way, if the Red polo shirt is not yours, it's not mine or Greg's (we undress each other) It's not Willem's, It must be Wolfgang's, or How did you manage to get Susanne's shirt off you cunning old bugger? What a wicked time!!!! |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 12 May 03 - 12:16 PM That's lovely, MudGuard, and all very true, in spite of some protests here and there! I like your use of visual rhyme :-) Glad you made it home safely. You know, I enjoyed myself so much, that if Skipjack is swayed to set another date for next year's EuroGathering by that grumpy lot in the other thread (wave!), I'll do an extra mudcat weekend in Cork in the May weekend! Letty, pondering: Will the polo shirt mystery ever be solved? Will Groningen's sheep ever recover? Did Frank really kill a cow to make his horny bagpipe? |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 12 May 03 - 02:04 PM And yet another message from me: I've now put everything I've got online, including Glen and Ron's pictures (without their permission, they can now sue me!), plus a link to Laurens's page, so every photo I've seen from the meeting can now be found under this link (and if you happen to take a course with me, your exam results will be published here too!). Love, Letty |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: MudGuard Date: 12 May 03 - 02:49 PM Thanks, Letty, for putting the pictures online! I will defend you in case Glen and Ron try to sue you! |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Susanne (skw) Date: 12 May 03 - 05:58 PM Letty,I'll be very wary of taking any courses with you in the future ... except a very strict one! Eric, I have to disappoint you: I think I've got all the red polo shirts life has allotted to me so far (plus, the minidisc rematerialised as well - in the glove compartment). Besides, my car may be big enough for sleeping one, but definitely not for anything that may have crossed your filthy mind ... You sure the polo shirt isn't a red sheep in disguise? Now I'm off to have a look at the new photos. |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 12 May 03 - 06:35 PM Don't worry, Susanne, it will be completely anonymous, marks are listed under your student number. Anyway, I can be persuaded to give top marks to friends, so I'd say, read up on Bede and you're in (BTW, could you send me the list of addresses, I really have to start blackmailing people now)! Letty |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Eric the Viking Date: 12 May 03 - 07:02 PM Susanne, how unkind-I am deeply hurt, how could you say I have a filthy mind,it's much cleaner than skipjacks underwear!! tsk! tsk! Did I malign you in anyway? I always thought you were a gentle woman of noble breeding-now you are on my list like the rest of them!!!!! Glad you found all your possessions. Don't worry Letty, the date is fixed for next May so we'll see you then, unless before, you never know-that's not a threat! |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 13 May 03 - 03:53 AM What a fine way to begin this morning, reading the additions to the thread and looking at new pictures. Have a good time today and evermore. Wilfried |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Noreen Date: 13 May 03 - 05:19 AM The red polo shirt is mine! |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 13 May 03 - 08:29 AM Noreen, will you come and get it? :-) I'll give it a quick wash first. You'd be most welcome! Letty |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Noreen Date: 13 May 03 - 09:28 AM I'll keep an eye on the 1p flights, Letty dear :0) |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: MudGuard Date: 13 May 03 - 11:25 AM Noreen, the only bad things about the weekend: You were not there and you did not sing "Hard times"! I was missing you! |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Noreen Date: 13 May 03 - 01:28 PM Andy, what can I say? Wish I'd been there too. Loved looking at the pics, Letty. Now, Skip will be surveying all the local eateries to find one for next year with the requisite level of service... |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Herma Date: 13 May 03 - 03:25 PM Do I understand rightly that the next gathering will be in Yorkshire??? in May 2004??? Told you before(I think), got out of touch a bit last year! May have missed some threads... Susanne, this may mean we will have to awaken a lot of (the other) German and Dutch mudcatters to start practising loads of music and to come along !!! Maybe we'd better start that anyway , no matter where the next meeting will take place! Herma |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: MMario Date: 13 May 03 - 03:37 PM well - that's the next Euro-Mudmeet; there is a gather in Yorkshire in a couple weeks; there is one this weekend in Central PA (I think) - the FSGW (Mudcat welcome) Getaway Weekend in October; The Mystic Music festival the 2nd weekend of June, etc, etc, etc. |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 13 May 03 - 03:42 PM Herma, it's not very clear from the title, but this is the thread for the next EuroGathering: click. It's in Lincolnshire, and Skipjack will organize it. I think we could pick some Laïs songs (do you know them?) and learn those by heart? I don't know any other Dutch MudCatters, although Wil Bakker was originally planning to come along (haven't heard from him since, hope he's OK). |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Eric the Viking Date: 13 May 03 - 03:48 PM The gathering for next year in Europe is 30 April/1/2nd of May at Barrow on Humber. (Close to hull) See this thread.thread.cfm?threadid=59455&messages=52 |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Herma Date: 13 May 03 - 04:02 PM Letty, Thanks for directing me to the other thread.. don't know any Laïs ??songs, but have an open mind (or ear) let me know where to find them and I will certainly try to learn them by heart! Yes, do know a few other Dutch Mudcatters, friends of mine, among them the friend that I sing with most of the time... she's let me know, she's already warming up to be at the next meeting, tempted by this thread we're putting together. Aquainted with a few more Dutch mudcatters from around here, will try to talk them into coming as well!! |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Herma Date: 13 May 03 - 04:04 PM And Eric as well!! Thanks! Will start saving up money from now on.... |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Letty Date: 13 May 03 - 04:09 PM Laïs are a Flemish group, three girls who sing traditional Flemish and Dutch songs (and more exotic ones as well). Check out their website , and you can probably find their cds in every record shop (even V&D). |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Herma Date: 13 May 03 - 04:16 PM OK Letty, will go out to find and sample their Cds on Thursdaynight (koopavond)...V&D is just 'round the corner...Will let you know how I feel about the songs.... |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: EtV@work Date: 14 May 03 - 12:10 PM Well there are two links to the same thread. Mine seems a bit less blue clicky, than Letty's, but they both work.So See everyone then, or before. |
Subject: RE: MudMeet Groningen From: Susanne (skw) Date: 16 May 03 - 09:19 PM Have just posted addys to everyone concerned, will be starting for Scotland (via Selby) in about 8 hours' time. Hoping to see some of you there! |
