I think Skarpi deserves a serious answer. There's a discussion and some useful looking advice in This thread on gearslutz.com.

It looks like the all purpose SM57 is a possibility. The suggestion of a Beyerdynamic M201 is probably a good one: I have one of those and it does everything an SM57 does, but better.

It depends to some extent on whether you are talking about recording (which I think the Gearslutz thread is about) or live sound. Also, especially with any kind of drums, the position of the microphone will make a big difference to the sound, so you need to experiment.

Around Central New York the Bodhran players seem to like a Shure 57 taped to a cross bar inside the Bodhran.
