LOL!

I knew what you were thinking -- the plastic/paper tape kind really only made it to the US after the war, where they got a LOT better. The steel recorders are kind of a brief, forgotten era, sandwiched between wire recorders and "tape."

The things you'll find at yard sales...

Me thinks it's both a matter of context and term availability / useage. Since mike is, percentage wise, used mostly to shorten the formal name Michael then it is 'taken'. The argument applies also to bike for bicycle instead of bic since bic is a brand name for a pen. So to avoid confusion mic is appropriate both within the context of the discussion and the availability of the term.

Me thinks this is both a context and availability issue. Since 'mike' is used as a shortened version of the formal name 'Michael' it is 'taken'. The same applies to the 'bic' for bicycle argument since 'bic' is a brand name that applies to ink pens' So in terms of unused abbreviations and the context of the discussion 'mic' is the most appropriate truncation of microphone.

The industry term is "mic" - for all the reasons posted previously. It will remain "mic" in the industry - an industry that uses 2 or 3 letter abbreviations (without periods) for most of its technology - CAM, AUD, VID, VHS, DBC, BSP, VHS, VTR, TVN, DVD, ADO, DME, ME, CC, DLT, HD, SD, D1,D2,D3,D5,D9, DVC,DV, SX and hundreds of others.

Whether it is a proper abbreviation or politically correct really doesn't matter.   If you want to BS your way into sounding like a pro (or a geek) use MIC.

Geeze Louise, guys -- if you all have THIS much time on your hands, you could be selling Mudcat CDs door-to-door!! I mean really!! (I love the line "mic is chic", though).

Of all the things I truly lic,
My 10-speed bic, my childhood tric,
And things known only to my psyc,
My favorite is my vocal mic!
Oh, I should weep if it should bric,
I'd have to hold a bleedin' wic
And stamp and pout just lic a tic,
(A scene my wife would not much lic!)
So keep yer finger in the dic,
And sing of Betsy, Sweet, from Pic,
And pray I get to keep my mic!

A
