Yup, it's time to start planning and packing for Winfield again. Here are the details.

38th Annual Walnut Valley Festival
Winfield, Kansas
September 16—20, 2009

September 10, 2009 7am, Landrush begins. This is the time that Full Festival ticket holders may enter the campgrounds, set up their campsites, and begin camping.

August 20, 2009 7am, Lineup begins.
The WVA takes over the fairground and you're "allowed" to line up for the big Landrush.

Walnut Valley Festival
Post Office Box 245, 918 Main
Winfield, Kansas 67156
(620) 221-3250
http://www.wvfest.com/

Michelle and I are planning to hit town on the 12th, the Friday before the festival and go the the Great Plains Dulcimer Alliance picnic on Saturday. As usual we'll be splitting time between the Fair Grounds and visiting the Winfield kinfolk.

Who else is going this year?

Dang, not much action on this subject.

Phil, I intend to go, but can't say I'm 100% sure yet. I'll try to repost when I'm certain.

For the last several years Mudcatters John and Lin, Bill and Deanna, and Al and Barbara have been there. I've been off and on the last few years, after making 30 consecutive festivals. I'll hope to see these folks and meet Phil and Michelle next month.

Anyone else?

We were so anxious to get a spot that we sold our house and moved into the camper on July 01, 2009.

After the great flood last year there was talk about quite a few people camping at Oxford this year, so we spent two weeks there to look over the campsite, before moving on to Winfield on July 17. They were so happy to see us at Winfield that they threw up a county fair as a welcome, and we also sat through the "Kansas & Oklahoma Antique Steam and Gasoline Engine" show.

A quick look yesterday found nobody at Oxford, but one of the reasons for camping there would be to avoid the long lineup at Winfield, perhaps. We've been told that the übermeister has declared that Carp Camp will be at Winfield. They had a good time at Oxford last year, and most of the ones we'd heard talking about returning there were from Carp Camp. (The Wi-Fi hookup was gone at Oxford, and our best cell phones didn't work; but the Wi-Fi might be turned back on if enough people move in there.)

We're sitting in "the pre-lineup" waiting for land rush so we can break a few things (as usual) trying to get our usual (or any) camping spot. In the move to our current "pre-linup" positions, the beergarden people bent a fender on one car and ripped the front bumper completely off another one (Toyota). The guy with the Toyota wasn't too concerned 'cause it was a borrowed car. I haven't identified the camper that took it off. The little gal with the bent fender was a little upset, but seems to be rcovering.

Lineup numbers won't be issued until 07:00 Sept 5, but we think we'll be in the first 50 or so for the Pecan Grove.

The number of campers currently here seems a bit fewer than at same time last year, probably only a couple of hundred thus far compared to our guess of 350 - 380 at the same time last year; but there's been a continuing dribble of late-comers. We suspect some of trying to shorten the stay (and reduce camping fees) due to the economy. (WVA has added an extra $2 "kick" to camping fees beginning Sept 5 this year - now city fees + $4.)

For Uncle Phil: The KPM Wi-Fi is showing five ports now in parts of the campground where I've turned on the laptop, but I haven't carried the laptop around to try to look at coverage. I couldn't see a visible difference in signal strengths between mid Walnut grove and Eastern Desert locations where we've parked long enough to look.

The hydro report shows the river had a peak at about 3.5 ft last week. Flood stage is at 18 ft, and last year during the evacuation it hit 32 ft. It lookes like we're safe enough unless there's a major weather change.

See y'all soon as ya get here.

John

Hi, Gary. I hope you are able to make it. It will be interesting to see how many show up, what with the economy and last year's flood. I'm guessing that Bob and WVA took a financial beating last year and could use a good year this time around.

Hi John, I know it never hurts to show up a little early, but July seems a wee bit extreme.

I talked to Carpmeister Dave at NTIF in Dallas in March and he said they would be in their usual Walnut Grove location again this year. KPM had an antenna on the south end of the grandstand two years ago. It worked well on that end of t6he midway by the breakfast stand (mmmm, biscuits and sausage gravy) and in the Pecan Grove. Last year they promised repeaters and better coverage. but but then the floods came. Put the coffee pot on -- we'll be there as soon as we can.

Uncle Phil -

I stopped in at the KPM office yesterday with a little question about their log-out setup, and they said they have EIGHT portals spread around the fairgrounds now. They replaced a couple due to a flood early in the year and another couple or three due to a second flood later on; but so far as I've seen the coverage is good. I only saw five ports when my laptop searched from the eastern desert; so a couple of them must be a little away from there to cover the west part of the grounds(?).

Just for reference, the thread for last year was: WVA 2008 - Winfield Festival (First 50 posts, local link). There are links there, I believe, to other prior year threads.

Maybe it's not all that unusual, but yesterday I spoke with a couple who came for the Lineup (20 August to 5 or 10 September) but plan to leave and skip the festival (Land Rush 10 Sept thru end of festival 20 Sept). They said the lineup is more fun than the fest. (But they may have some other factors they're not telling about.)

It might be a new slant on getting a better cost/benefit ratio than what we've been doing. I'll have to think on it.

We're packed and ready to go. We're coming up this Sat morning for some good tunes, see our good friends, and hopefully meet some new ones.
We're camped (for now) along the road North of the barn and next to the ballfield- 3 Casita campers in a row. Come by and play.
Boy Gary it'll be good to see you again, it's been awhile. And we're bringing our sweet and sour schnauzer, cause "Man's best friend is delicious." Doggone it's been awhile since we've heard that tune.
See you'ins soon.

Bill, you and John are making me wish we were headed that way sooner. Michelle talked to cousin Don this morning. His estimate was 150 campers already lined up in what John calls the eastern desert, so it doesn't look like last year's flood is discouraging people from coming. We're still looking to arrive around the 11th. Be sure to leave a jug of wine out in case I get thirsty in the middle of the night again.

Uncle Phil -

We noticed that Windswept Winery now has a storefront on Main Street, downtown Winfield. I roared past on my 'lectric chair this afternoon with thoughts of stopping in for some of the "Land Rush" label they were selling last year (if they still think that's cute enough to keep making it), but I found that they're only open (in Winfield) for a couple of hours on Saturday. I had to settle for gettin' a couple of washers at the hardware store for that trip.

But the winery is only about a dozen miles out, a mile or two west of Udall Rd, so Lin may force me to make a stop there before next weekend.

Bill might leave a jug out for ya' but you'll have to knock on the Thumper, cause I keep my goodies locked up under the bed (where they'd have to wake up Lin to get to 'em).

Sounds like the Usual Suspects are gathering...looking forward to seeing y'all soon (and LEJ too, hopefully). We checked out the winery and sure enough, they made Land Rush brand again--but the '08 vintage got "washed out" so well it turned white! They still had a few of the red kind too--you'll have to come by and sample some of each on the 10th.
Al and Barbara, I tried to find y'all but never managed it. Do you know where you'll be camping this year? As usual, we're hoping for the south side of the Pecan Grove oval, about midway down.
Bill and Deanna, we'd already noted the Casita line-up on the road and figured one of those just HAD to be you two. We'll be listening for some fine music from that direction this weekend!

"Coming home to Winfield" one more time...September just wouldn't be the same without the Festival!

Hi Lin! We're pretty busy getting ready for the trip. Michelle's been working on her packing lists for a couple weeks and got down the big plastic tubs we use to pack today. She'll start packing clothes in the tubs instead of drawers when she does the laundry. She bought cheap early-bird tickets months ago so that's already taken care of. She was on the phone with the Winfield relatives earlier this week making arrangements for a place for us to stay. She's also arranged things with the pharmacy so we have enough prescription drugs to cover the trip, and rescheduled some doctor appointments. She still needs to get the bills paid up and the car serviced before we can head to Kansas.

I bought guitar strings.

Lin says she looked at Camp NOWHERE a couple of times, but there was NOBODY there. She asked at Camp NEXT TO NOWHERE but (they said) they didn't recognize the names.

We guessed that nobody there probably uses their regular name anyhow. There are groups here where people don't want to be known by the names on the posters down at the P.O..

Uncle Phil -

We found NOWHERE and NEXT TO NOWHERE about where you described. or at least we thought we found the camps. Recollection is they were pretty close to the river.

Al -

There ARE NO STRANGERS AT WVA, although knowing the names of even your very good friends there is mostly optional.

Most of the regulars are commonly referenced in conversation by "communally assigned descriptors" that are adopted by the mutual consent of those who remember the prior night well enough to talk about who was there. Occasionally some negotiation is required when someone remembers something that didn't happen, and agreement is required on whether the didn't is better than the did. Whichever is the best story usually survives and and may sometimes become another "Winfield Legend."

Uncle Phil has been the source for a number of such, although I don't think I've heard all of them yet.

Michele, do NOT under any circumstances learn how to put strings on Phil's guitar! He would then make you follow him around in case one of them broke, when you'd much rather be sewing or visiting with me.

The ones interviewed were a somewhat "special" group, so far as I could tell. The guy who played the banjo (including the background during the rest of the "interviews") is one I'd not heard play before, and I don't really know where - with what group(s) - he camps.

"Andre" (not his given name but what most campers know) is one of the beergarden folk. Waking times for that whole group are somewhat "random'" but they're one of the groups where there's nearly always someone awake.

(In that group, waking hours and conscious hours do not necessarily correlate closely, although they've developed a significant "second generation of kids" - under 25(?) with kids under 5(?) - who seem mostly "sane.")

I was told that a "fringe beergardner" was a photog for the Wichita Beagle and was going to try to get them to assign him to a "photo shoot" so he could "work" during Lineup. I don't know whether that was the stimulus for the piece. The one named would have a pretty good idea what's of interest to the people here, but the editors probably wouldn't let him "paint a true picture." The article came through, as usual, as if the media "hasn't got a clue" about what's really going on.

Well, that can't be good news. Is the sudden peak the result of rainfall or opening floodgates at the dam upstream? I'm looking at the Kansas radar and it shows heavy rain moving through tonight.
- Phil

Subject: RE: Winfield 2009 - Walnut Valley Festival
From: JohnInKansas

Uncle Phil -

The peak is probably due to very heavy rain in Wichita and eastward, today - Tuesday (or yesterday if you're in another time zone).

Several unofficial reports indicated 6 inches or more in north Wichita, and there may have been heavier stuff north and eastward from there. Wichita was reporting lots of street closings due to water over the road, and the toll road (I35) was closed due to a "low hanging power line" near Augusta/El Dorado. Maybe the soggy ground let some poles tip over?

The reservoirs north of Winfield may have had to do some release, or it may just be runoff.

The predicted 20 ft level isn't too seriously into the fairground, although parts of the Walnut Grove and and a chunk of the Pecan grove may be flooded temporarily. The peak should drop off fairly quickly (according to the current guesses) and a day or two may dry things out pretty well if there's no further heavy rain. The NOA forecast put the peak at about 01:00 the morning of Land Rush, so it could make finding a spot and getting into it a bit touch-and-go.

We've had a couple of hours of partly sunny Tuesday, but it rained at Winfield most of the previous night, and it's been light/moderate fall for the past few hours. (The lightning is spectacular, but not really frequent.) I measured about an inch Tuesday morning in my precision laundry soap jug cut off to hold spare bungee cords, but the local officials said we only got 0.7 inches.

Walking is difficult in lots of localized spots where we're sitting due to standing water and mud, but there's nothing yet that you can't drive a golf cart through. Our scooters aren't that water resistant, so we're confined to driving out or staying home in the camper.

Hoping for a sunny day tomorrow.

John

Six inches of rain is pretty impressive. The radar is showing one more band of rain that looks like it should blow through by morning, then dryer weather. The peak last year, if memory serves, was around 30 ft vs the 20 ft that NOA is projecting this year. Stay dry.

The WVA FM radio station was interrupting programming after approximately each two music offerings to assure everyone that the predicted 20 ft crest would not affect the campgrounds. At midnight last night they were broadcasting a NOA forecast followed by a "reassuring message" from WVA management.

At 07:30 this morning (local CDT), they are interrupting the music less frequently (about every half hour?), and they are now announcing that Land Rush will take place at 07:00 tomorrow morning. They are urging that everyone proceed slowly and follow instructions, and are giving detailed instructions that if you lose traction you should NOT ATTEMPT to drive out by spinning your wheels. You should notify a "Landrush Security Person" who will have you "towed to dry ground."

They still are broadcasting the prediction of a 20.2 ft crest, but after telling us that the crest (20.2 ft) doesn't affect us, they broadcast the current NOA prediction of a 25.6 ft crest at precisely 07:00 CDT tomorrow morning without further comment on effect on the campground from the five foot increease in the predicted crest.

The music being broadcast is all from prior year performers here, and is quite good if you're within the rather short range required to receive the broadcasts (105.7 FM).

Just announced on the WVA radio:

LANDRUSH WILL BE POSTPONED TO SATURDAY.

Currently explaining that water will fill the "West Campground" (Walnut Grove) up to the road nearest the entrance - i.e. all under water. The description is vague, and suggests that the person (unknown) making the announcement probably has never spent any time in camp here.

Also explaining that the "South Campground" (Pecan Grove) will be underwater south of the "first firelane." The description here is also vague (same guy), but this appears to mean the south side of the "main loop."

The peak will drop fairly rapidly according to the prediction, but two days is a pretty short time to dry out low-lying camping grounds.

They are requesting that anyone not already in lineup should consider not coming prior to Saturday, as all new arrivals will be parked on paved surfaces and there aren't many paved surfaces left.

Our impression was that they were installing "drop boxes" for electrical power in the Pecan Grove Monday and/or Tuesday. Since there is no electricity in the area expected to be flooded, I wouldn't expect them to need to move any of those. Walnut Grove boxes probably are high enough to be safe at the currently predicted crest level, but the park guys will have to be watchful.

Once again: LAND RUSH IS POSTPONED TO SATURDAY.

John

The WVA fm radio is KWVA at 105.7 on the dial, but it's a low-power local station intended to be received only in the vicinity of the Winfield fairgrounds. The station only operates during the Walnut Valley Association Festival, usually for less than about a week each year.

I don't know what it's useful range is; but last year we were unable to pick it up at the City Lake about 18 miles north of the grounds. It may have been too weak a signal, or the transmitter may have been under water then.

There was talk of putting a link to a web-cast on the wva website at http://www.wvfest.com/ but I don't know if that ever got done or if it's still "pending." You might poke around there and see if there's anything helpful.

John

The NOA prediction has been lowered to a crest at about 18 feet. No reason given, but unconfirmed reports are that the Kaw reservoir (I think it's downstream) dropped their level by about 2 feet, and perhaps some upstream controls have agreed to hold back some of the runoff to level things out. The radio says the ~18 ft level will bring water "only to the edge of the concrete slab in front of Stage 3."

Landrush remains at Saturday morning at last reports.

As we sit in the Walnut Valley Festival Office, it has been determined by Rick Meyer, that we have to re-schedule Land Rush for Saturday, September 12. So, we have to ask each of you packing up to come to Winfield today to wait until Saturday morning. There will be a rise in the Walnut River over a small part of the West Campground and the Pecan Grove. We are told by Cowley County Emergency Operations Center that the bottom of the concrete slab in front of Stage 3 is where the river will top out. The river will come up fast and go down just as fast!

There are about 550 units already in the Fairgrounds. We have been told we do not have to move these units out. We just cannot handle the influx of those of you who are coming. Please stay put and notify your friends – we will pass on the word as soon as we get anything new. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE!

Bob Redford, President
Walnut Valley Association

I haven't checked with them, but it's likely that anyone coming from a distance could find a "staging point" at Oxford, about 9 miles west of Winfield - straight out Winfield's 9th St. That would give you a place to park/camp comfortably for a day or two with a short dash to the Winfield grounds to come in on Saturday. The RV park there is really easy to find, on the west side of town a couple of blocks south of the highway. You can't really take a wrong turn 'cause there are only a couple of turns there; but the only business likely to be visibly open has gas pumps on the highway and it's where you'd want to turn.

We still are hearing from a few who say they're "thinking about" camping at Oxford for the whole Festival; but I don't think many actually will.... the number keeps diminishing as the time approaches.

Once again the river is rising. I'm not going this year as there should have been more info givin by the festival personal. Last year
they acted like nothing had occurred when in fact thousands of people
drove many miles only to find a very muddy festival with no camping on festival grounds. No effort was made by the WVA festival personal toward refunds, credits or something that would bring festival attendees back to winfield. I have attended this festival for the last 29years but I can't bring myself to go this year. We only go to see our friends from all over the country anyway. It is not worth $180.00(2people)$84.00(camping)spending money everyday in town,
fighting with the town folk(kids) when they come into camp and steal ya blind. A change has come and our camp of 62 people will not be there this year(2009)

Thanks to 'JohnInKs for the posts from the WV campgrounds. It is nice to have news from someone who is actually there with 'boots on the ground'. I appreciate it.
While it is true that 2008 was certainly a somewhat disappointing time, with folks scattered from Oxford to the City Lake, it was still a good time. We were like many other folks in that we paid for camping and electricity and due to the flood we were not able to camp at the fairgrounds. It was unfortunate circumstances, but I think the WVA staff and the city and the county did a great job of accommodating everybody as best they could. We have always found Winfield folks to be very friendly. We enjoy seeing our old friends, many who we see only once a year...at the festival. There is no better place to get together than at Winfield, mud or no mud. It is a very special place. Looking forward to this year.

Guest, Land Rush

If you have a "place" with a Lineup number you are free to go in and out. Without that, we'd starve because our fridge only holds about three days worth of food and we've been here since July 17.

Just tell them at the gate that you have a PAID FOR marked spot for your camper.

They have started (today) collecting tickets and putting wrist bands on people, so after the first entry you may need to "show a wrist" to get in - especially through the back gate.

The attempt to discourage "new" people from coming before Saturday is because there is limited space where they can create a new space for a new camper/vehicle.

You will need to find a place to park the golf cart (formerly your camper) and the vehicle you come in without blocking fire lanes and the little paths others need in order to get in and out to get the groceries; but your camper replaces the "marker" golf cart so it doesn't require a new space.

All clear?

John

A check at Oxford this afternoon found about a dozen campers, a couple of tents, two or three "shade pavilions" and a "Carp Camp" sign hung on one of the RV camp permanent pavilions, suggesting that Carpers have "reserved" it.

We were, unfortunately, unable to find any people there so we were unable to confirm that they were WVA addicts, although some of the vehicles had "that look."

This morning USGS shows the actual Walnut River stage running below their revised prediction. The peak will be today so the festival should be OK.

JohnInKansas Thank you!!! This forum has been fantastic! The info you have provided is the exact kind of info festival goers need. Last year was tough. I did not know where to go. I was just lucky to get a hold of a friend about one hour before driving aimlessly toward Winfield. My friend directed me to Oxford and it ended up being a great time as always. Now, if I may, I would like to ask you a couple of specific questions. What is the current condition of the bayou? (extreme west walnut grove) and.. Will the bayou be underwater or just really muddy by Tuesday? What are your or the 'experts' current predictions? Also, are you familiar with camp super pickle or thistle pickle or whatever they call themselves. I have failed to contact them and would like to know if they decide to set up at the fairgrounds or if they bail to Oxford or the lake. Thanks in advance -John (Oh and thanks to everyone who has contributed info)

P.S. To Johnby in hartford, ks .. I am sorry to hear that you have decided not to come. I agree that the festival organizers could have done a better job giving more detailed info last year. The info I got from the website and from calling was from the perspective of the organizers. When what I really needed is info from the perspective of campers. Which I have found out to be very different. Organizers just don't seem to understand what we want and need. I am sure that the fairground flooding issue has been a hot topic in Winfield for a long time. It has probably been an issue for many events that occur there every year. Unfortunately, the only 2 options are probably to build a dam or relocate the fair grounds. Both would require millions of dollars. I am going to write a song called 'Damn, Build a Dam'. If you come to the festival I will sing it for you.

Big thanks as well from me on the updates from the grounds. My pop-up is in line down there and it's given me a big peace of mind hearing what the conditions are. Last year was tough in getting timely information on the conditions and fact that I needed to get on the road to rescue my camper. On the other hand the efforts of volunteers to get us out of the muck and re-located to alternate campsites was phenomenal. I was blown away by the efforts to put in power and portapots, etc. out at the City Lake. See you all in a day! Happy Winfield!
