Yes, I used to go there from time to time. My 'main' folk club started off in Bridlington Market Place, then moved to the Black Lion in the old town - which I ended up running in 1966-7. I also used to go quite frequently to the Waterson's club at the Blue Bell in Hull and sometimes to one upstairs at the King's Arms in York - and also the Dransfield's club in Harrogate. In fact, while still at school, I was ofen out at clubs five nights a week (nece the no-so-good A level results).

The Blue Bell on Sunday nights in Hull - I remember it from about 1970 - 1973. Ian Manuel used to sing there, but mainly in the bar downstairs. Also a club in ( I think it was ) South Cave run by John O'Hagan who now sings with Cockersdale.

The first one I went to was upstairs in the George Hotel in Cleckheaton back in the very early seventies. The first two guests I saw were Hedgehog Pie and Mike Harding.

There were certainly many clubs about in those days. The Anchor at Brighouse, The Bradshaw Tavern near Denholm stick in my memory. There was even one in The Castle Hotel on Castle Hill, Huddersfield. My good mate Bruce Baillie used to run one in the Old Packhorse, Cleckheaton.

In York, the Lowther Hotel Folk Club ran in the 60's, becoming the York Folk Centre in the early 70's - never really settling after leaving the Lowther, but moving through a succession of pubs before fizzling out. We ran successful York Folk Festivals at the end of the 60's.

Later Noel Dobson & Richard, too.

Now, of course it's the Black Swan Folk Club in York, but just as good - if not a little better (but I'm prejudiced) - is the Wednesday singaround at the Thompsons Arms, Flaxton, which is often likened to the best clubs of the 60's & 70's. Why rely on nostalgia?

SHEFFIELD
Polyfolk at the Grapes, Trippett Lane, on Tuesdays. All the best artists (subjective)were be booked at affordable prices in those days. We convinced John Bartley to do monologues then as he couldn't sing anywhere near in tune.
Broomhill Tavern on Wednesdays. Singers club run by Lynne & Graham Barber I think. They went of to sing on cruise ships. I'd love to know what happened to them.
The Three Cranes on Queen Street on Friday. Run by Tony Furniss, sadly no longer with us. May have been run by Malcolm Fox before I went, also sadly no longer with us. Saw some really good people there for the first time.
Saturday, can't remember. Was it Win White's Club on Greystones Road then? Went a few times, but it was a bit expensive. Had people like Steeleye Span & Mr Fox though.
Sunday Jill & Gerry Bates nursery club at the Grapes. Excellent teaching/practicing club for traditional singers. Gerry still dances with City Morris.

Other occasional things happened at the Nelson in town. Tony Irvine might have had something to do with that, also sadly no longer with us.
The University Club on West Street, although they had mainly contemporary artists.
The Lescar near Hunter's bar ran for a bit I think.


OUT OF TOWN
The Lord Conyers at Kiveton on Tuesdays. Now at the colliery cricket club. Celebrates it's 40th year this year. Used to seem like an adventure going on the bus in those days.
The Old Horn at Bradfield. Might have been Friday. Another adventure. Climb up the hill from Low Bradfield and run down at the end for the bus if you couldn't get a lift.
Black Bull at Ecclesfield. John and Sarah Ledbury ran that club. Bit of a trek and the opposite end of Sheffield. John still dances with the Lord Conyer's Morris.
Derek and Dorothy's club at Barnsley. Saw Martin Carthy for the first time there.
The club at Wortley. That has moved somewhere else now I think.

Better sign off else I'll be stuck here trying to remember. But we had some rare old times, didn't we? In those day's floor singers were let in for nothing and maybe were even bought a pint. That sounds like a good idea.

Yes Dave H, I for one remember following the Grass Roots around its various venues in Halifax.

I also remember packed Sunday-night sessions at the Fleece in Addingham in the late sixties and early seventies - so packed that beer, and sometimes clientele, were passed in through the windows. The singing was led by the landlord and a pal of his, known collectively as the Two Daves. Many moons ago I mentioned the Fleece on Mudcat, which months - or even years? - later prompted Leadfingers to send me a PM which he will not mind my pasting here:

I hit Addingham in May or june 1977 , and finished up doing a Charity concert in the village hall in the August !
One dave died and the other (Pub Landlord) gave up the pub and became a Councillor ! Lost track in the late eighties But they were both good lads ! - Terry

The Haworth Arms On Beverley Road in Hull in the mid-seventies. The Round at the University and not forgetting that "Nellie's" started in Beverley in the mid seventies (1976?)as well.

I got married in 1972 and I seem to remember that Nellie's was still Nellie's at that point and women were not allowed in - except for a small room at the side.

Malcolm Fox ran a club in Sheffield at the Three Cranes.

Pete Civico also ran a club there. There was a club at the Cross Scythes (Totley) attended (mainly) by students from the college up there which eventually became part of Sheffield Hallam University and then was sold off. I have it in the back of my mind it was a domestic science college and thus most of the students that came were female.

Quite a few folk clubs in the Bradford area in this period.

Sunday- Bradford Folk Club at the Commercial, James Street, then at the Valley House, then the Washington, then Bradford Hotel,(Manningham Lane).Paul Tattersall,(known to all as Dad), ran this.
Tuesday-University Folk Club, (in the Staff Bar).
Thursday-MacMillan College Folk Club, (in the College)
Friday-Topic Folk Club,(then at the old Market Tavern)
Saturday-informal folk session at the Bank House, Pudsey.
I remember going to a Folk Club during the week at the Ferrands Arms in Bingley, I think Tony Capstick was involved with it, but it's a long time ago, and I can't remember which night.

My first folk club was at Barnsley in the mid-60s. It was held at various pubs before finally settling at the Civic Centre. Was it called Room At The Top? It was run by Dave Burland, Tony Heald and the Elliots. It was also my first experience of singing on stage. Happy Days.

I first stood up on my hind legs to perform in public at the Mitre
in Knaresborough in 1969. Subsequently I was involved with John Burrell in founding the folk club at the Royal Oak in Knaresborough; at the same time we started Knaresborough Mummers who are still performing. I got to Sheffield in 1980 by which time the FC at The Grapes was on Fridays - saw loads of great acts there and did a few spots myself.

I was back in Sheffield last year and stuck my head into the Grapes, and it still looks exactly the same: the same dark wooden bar with the green and yellow tiled floor, the same worn carpet leading up the stairs to the upstairs room where the club ran ... and probably the same drinkers and glasses from the look of it :)

My memories of this period are a mix of vivid and extremely muzzy. I cannot account for this.
I first went to the Empress, Harrogate in the early 60s, an upstairs romm with candle lighting and largely orange box seating. It relocated to the Clarendon (I think) and then to the West Park Hotel.
Great times, never bettered. During this time I also went to some clubs in Leeds/Beeston but the names of the venues escape me right now although the times were undoubtedly good.
Later to the Fleece at Addingham where as mentioned earlier in the thread the Sunday night sessions centered on David Hopton and Dave Harrison. I remember John Heap (Heapy) being the landlord and when he quit Hairy Dave took over. Tuesday night was more of a country night which my mate Stuart and I used as a practice night which turned into a session if the room started filling up.
I also remember the Watermill just outside Pateley Bridge.

Although I remember discussions about what was 'ethnic' (the term of the day) I certainly don't recall the intolerance and animosity which seems to be such a part of the folk scene today. But I could be wrong..........

The old folkies that used it tend to use the Gardeners, Fat Cat, Kelham ISland and Hillsborough. Fagan's of course.

re the Fleece at Addingham, Dave Hopton sadly died a number of years ago as did "Big" John Marshall of Ilkley who was a superb plectrum guitarist who turned up at the Fleece on a pretty regular basis. John Toothill who also played there, I believe, is now seriously ill with a cancer. Paul Keene who also played at the Fleece now and again is also sadly dead. But Dave Harrison keeps marching on!
For those who have moved away from the area and remember the Sunday night crush, the room is no more, the whole layout of the pub has changed and that room forms one side of a more central bar. So gone is the sort of one way system involving an exit via the window to the front car park, back in through the front door to the bar and somehow getting back in the room with a pint of "Uncle Josh's best ....
I believe there is now an open mic session on a Sunday evening and the Trad Jazz evening on Wednesdays is once again taking place.. Is it still Harry Long and his band?

Goole Folk Club met every Monday night in the RAOB Club, Goole from around 1969 and it not only supplied romantic interest for Steve Gardham (we think he met his wife there), it also went on to nurture a little concertina wizard called Chris Sherburn.

The club lasted around 25 years and in its heyday regular visitors were Christy Moore, Eddie and Finbar Furey, Vin Garbutt, Martin Carthy, The Watersons, Dick Gaughan, Nic Jones, even Ossian played there once.


NB to the pedantic: Goole was in the West Riding of Yorkshire when the club started up!

Upstairs at the Lowther for me too, just like a folk club should be, Beer Barrel tables with candles. John Smiths beer I think.

There was a singers night on Fridays was it? At the Bluebell Inn down Fossgate. Not absolutely folky but community singing of the highest order. The Bluebell is another secret jewel of York, my home town, that hasn't changed much in the 40 years I've been away from it.

Pete Maddens in High Petergate was frequented by us folkies and put on the odd folk night.

The Holy Gound at Bubwith ( near Howden ) was the Saturday night venue in the mid 70's... can't remember the actual pub's name . It was run very efficiently by Harvey and Val Lakin who booked the best.
Harvey was a staunch Yorkshireman who suffered fools and 'southerners' with equal contempt.... 'here are no homosexuals in Yorkshire... we leave all that sort of thing to them buggers down south'... he possible never realised that his rant was a superb joke!

We routinely saw The Watersons, Alex Cambell, Nic Jones, Vin Garbutt, Dave Burland and if the guest cried off at short notice then the very excellent and much missed Bill Price stepped in... happy days and nights.

I used to go to the Morley Club fairly often in the 80's - it was at the Angel. Also went to Topic at Star, Peel, Melborn & Cock & Bottle & now go to Irish Club

Occasional visits to Bradshaw Tavern & Bacca Pipes (Keghley) at the Globe in 80s

Still very occasionally go to Grove

The Bay Horse in Bentley near Doncaster was my favorite club in the early sixties, run by George Pearson and his then wife Sheena (now Miller). Lots of great acts and some superb floor singers. John Leonard did all the introductions and held the night together, with help from people like Roy Machin and many others giving some great floor spots. Hedgehog Pie and Christie Moore were practically regulars, as were Tony Capstick and Dave Burland.
Great days with lots of fairly blurred memories.....

Regarding the FC at the Grapes in Trippet Lane Sheffield - I have a vague recollection that my sister Jennifer (nee) Marshall together with her Irish boyfriend Austin ?? ran the club for a while in the 60's and whilst this was in their control I saw Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick there and then resolved to learn another chord on the guitar. I have played that 3rd chord in folk clubs ever since!

AND Geoff Pickles running clubs - I used to stop over with Kathy and Phil Aveyard and drop into Geoff's clubs , and Bag of Shoddy , as well as other clubs in the patch !
The Charity Concert at Addingham that I headlined in '77 was a REALLY good concert !

Hotel Cottages Boroughbridge, run firstly by the Greens and then The Crofters, of which I am one, Alan sadly passed away a good number of years ago. 'Twas Bernard Louth, not Fawcett unless he changed his name by deed poll, he also ran a market stall in Keighley. Moved away down south a good few years ago. John Shackleton one of the other Jovial Crew members escaped teaching a recently, Jimmy sadly died quite a number of years ago. Managed to get a picture of the three at the Bingley Folk Workshop either in late 1966 or early 1967.

In Bradford, the Topic Folk Club is pretty well documented, with the guest lists reconstructed back as far as 1970 to the present day. It was the first folk club I attended, some time around Easter 1977 onwards. Looking at the guest list from that year, I remember seeing Nadine Elliott clog dancing on a board whilst Derek and Dorothy sang "My gal's a Yorkshire gal". I was reliant on bus transport, so never saw the end of anyone's final set, as the bus left town at 11.00pm.
Another club which ran around that time was in the upstairs room of The Kings Arms at Heaton, opposite St. Bede's School where I spent most of my weekdays. Not sure who ran it, but I seem to recall one of the regulars was Neil Ingram who was at one time a member of local band Aiken's Drum.
A couple of years later Neil was running a club in an upstairs room in The Metropole Hotel, Sunbridge Rd. I used to go when home from University, but can't recall how long it ran. At the time, The Metropole was one of a small handful of Tetley pubs which still had the original autovac handpumps. They had never been removed when the keg beer revolution gutted most of the country. A pint of Tetley bitter from the Metropole was completely different from that produced by later handpumps, with a head thick as cream, not like the flaccid froth on the top of modern pints.
Another club which hasn't yet been mentioned was at Wilsden. It was before my time, but I believe it was at The Ling Bob on Haworth Road.

As for Addingham. I didn't know Sunday nights at the Fleece, and David Harrison until the 1980s dancing with Boar's Head Morrismen. I recall the famous line attributed to him - when people at the back of the (always packed) room were making too much noise he told them "If you want to talk, there are two empty pubs further down the village".

I only went to Hubberholme a couple of times... that was a singularly boozy venue with the camping in the field! least said soonest mended but they were enjoyable nights. I'm really miffed about forgetting Jimmy's surname, he went on to become quite an acomplished fiddle player. Baz now plays fiddle and Steve still plays banjo, lives somewhere north of York.
And GtD there was a folk club at the Ling Bob. Went a couple of times in the mid to late 70s.

The Rugby Hotel folk Club Dock Street Hull late sixties seventis; Brilliant!!!!! First met me old mate Jock Manual there, also Jim Eldon, Mike Waterson and Jill Pidd who were the other resident singers.

Others who appeared there on a regular basis, Dick Gaughan, Vin Garbutt and Teeside Fettlers, Watersons, Christy Moore, Steve gardhamFureys, Luke Kelly, Martin Carthy, Pete Betts, Louis Killen, Ray and Archie Fisher, Bob Davenport, Mike Harding, The Gaugers, Isabelle Sutherland, Swan Arcade, Tony Capstick,Sean Cannon Packie Byrne and many more.

Pub is still there (now a Sam Smiths house).In the time I used it was officially a Bass house but sold Camerons, same as the other great Folk club,Folk Union One at The Bluebellpub still there but alas also Sam Smiths

Anyone remember the Wellington Boot Westgate Rotherham, small room upstairs, David (Ray Hearne wrote a song for David) used to pop in and sing Lola by the kinks the go. I saw a very young Vin Garbutt and loved his song "We May or May Never All Meet here Again" from the album "The Old Tin Whistle Pest" along with some fabulous whiste tunes.

As Geoff The Duck points out, the guest date info for The Topic in Bradford goes back to 1970 - pretty much 52 weeks a year for 40 years now.

However, the info for the period from 1970 back to 1956 is almost entirely missing... there are some minute books that went missing somewhere, I understand. But if Bill Turnpenny or Dave Hanson or anyone else happens to have old flyers or whatever with info from the 60s and late 50s sitting about, it would be great to be able to add some more dates to the giglist.

It was Austin May who was co-organiser at The Grapes on Trippett Lane in Sheffield. I was a member there from 1962-64 - Shirley Collins was one of their guests.

It was pleasant to see mention on this thread of the George at Hubberholme, the scene of many a bibulous weekend in my mis-spent youth. I first started going there in 1970, hitch hiking from Harrogate. Jackie Beresford was in attendance on accordian in those days, and ukelele player (Norman?) from Leeds, known as "Banjo Willie". Dennis Ward from Harrogate (another accordianist) was a regular, latterly with his son Dominic.

I remember one summer afternoon in 1971 the folkies organised a sports day up the dale near Yockenthwaite including such events as rhubarb thrashing and a tug o' war across the river (I got a soaking)

The last time I was there in a folk music context was as part of an early Knaresborough mummers performance at Easter 1975.
I always remember the Saturday nights in the George as one of the first informal song and music sessions I encountered which I have
always preferred to the formal concert style folk club.

there was a folk club run by Noel Dobson in York, nothing to do with the present club ,in fact in the eighties there was noels club and the club that later became the one roland walls now organises.
I played them both several times.
I think Noel Dobson was an antique dealer .
Mike Soar organised a few clubs,Ithink he was running one in Selby in the late seventies.
Goff and Eilenn Sherborne were running a club at Goole in the late seventies too I believe.

I am very pleased to hear that, there were two "Jims" who were knocking about in the folk scenein the Keighley & Bingley area in the period 1966 to 1969. I used to occasionally get them mixed up back then so it is more than likely that I am getting them mixed up now. If he is alive and well I have a photograph that I took at the Bingley Folk Workshop, probably early 1967 of the three members of the Jovial Crew along with Ken Edes on Banjo. I've already attached this to an email to John and he forwarded a copy to Bernard. I would be delighted to send one to Jim should he like to receive one. Thanks for the good news!

She wasn't much into folk in those days, but her and two friends were given free tickets to see Ralph McTell at St Georges Hall. When the three of them arrived, they doubled the size of the audience! I'm enjoying the memories of playing the folk club, making the record at the Cheshire studios and all the fun we had singing. My role was playing guitar backing and harmonising with John and Bernard. No, I only went to the Ferrends a couple of times. When I started teaching that took up most of my waking hours for a couple of years, at least until I got a car. As to the photos I think you will need to register as a member on Mudcat. That will then allow you to send me a message containing an email address to which I can send the pic as an attachment. I also have one of the Folkweavers in the Kings at one of the Friday night bashes! And were you involved in that massive concert for the scouts at Victoria Hall in Shipley. I have a pic of Paul & myself.

I used to go to one in Tadcaster in the 70s. I've an idea it was at the White Horse near both Smiths breweries, John Smith's and the good one, Sam Smith's, but it's been a while and too much Sam's has addled my memory.

Talking about Ripon and Harrogate there used to be a bloke called Les Pope who ran a string of clubs in that area during the sixties. I used to meet up with him at The Royal Turf, Felling on Tyne on Saturday nights as he was usually up in the North East at a weekend.

There was one at the Armytage Arms on Clifton Common near Brighouse (or Brigus to the locals). Me and my mate got there early one week and was engaged in conversation by a strange but interesting bloke in a floppy cap. Turned out it was that night's guest, Peter Bellamy, the first time I saw him; a memorable evening. Can't remember who ran the club though. Another guest that sticks in the mind was Hawg's Folly, an unaccompanied trio (it been the days before accapella had arrive on these shores) who sang Elizabethan madrigals amongst other things.

Oh it's all coming back now. The Armytage Arms club was run by Andy Speechly, he was a member of Hawg's Folly who, now I think on it, had instumentation. I think Andy played a guitar that looked like a lute complete with soundhole rose.

Then there was that time at The Lowther in York, I think in 1966, when we booked Bert Jansch and there was not only no standing room, but the chamber was so hot, in mid-winter, that we had to open the windows which were promptly used as seats with legs dangling outside (as published in The Acts of Th eApostles - check!) - I know - I had one of those seats and I was no t'Committee!

I can only go back to the mid 70s but fondly remember the clubs in Bradford and Leeds well.

I specifically remember going to a club in Leeds known as "The Handpump" - it moved to a pub just over Leeds Bridge between the Grove Tetleys brewery and had the most wonderful victorian gents urinals. Can anyone confirm which pub that was?

I also remember coming across punk music for the first time in Macmillan College Bradford crypt when they were still clearing away the folk club. All of a sudden these strange pierced people suddenly started bouncing up and down like pogo stick to deafening music. I legged it.

I was at the Lowther the night Bert Jansch played. I agree - god it was hot in there! I remember Geordie Coulson playing two songs that night as well - Sea Watter Shy and an absolute brimer of a Shoals of Herring (might just be the best version I ever heard).

What a night that was.

Merlins Nest at T'Owd Sair at Linthwaite, Saturday nights (hang on a minute? That was the 1980's?) The Bare Knuckle Boys near Holmfirth, Thursday nights was it or Wednesday? The Hartshead Moortop folk club at the Old Packhorse Inn? let me see, who ran that one? I remember Bradford University Folk Club at the Queens Hall Bradford. The Three Owls at Kirkburton, which later moved to the Golden Ball at Shepley, Hudds. The George in Cleckheaton, (Thursdays)first place I ever played in public, Mike Harding was guest that night, that would be January 11th 1973! The Anchor in Brighouse, Saturday night. The Old Bluebell in Bury which doesn't really count cos it was in Lancashire but it was still a bloody good club and they gave me some of my first gigs, was it Alan and Jean Seymour who used to run it?

Steve Lane, that Leeds pub sounds like The Adelphi. It certainly had some folk nights in there, but was mainly known for jazz (and its Victorian tiles).

There was a club in the room upstairs at a pub in Balby, I think it was called the Fairway. Mid 1960s.
Had Pete Sayers a few times - he was brilliant.
The Levee Breaks turned up most times. If you weren't depressed watching Rovers, you would be after they performed.
Lived in Mexborough, saw a lot of Tony Capstick, and Keith Foster.
Happy days. No money, but a lot to look forward to.

The first club I ever went to was Les Pope's White Horse in Ripon. The Cropper Lads were singing. I'd never heard anything like it before, and it was a turning-point in my life. It was also, later, the first club I ever sang in ('The Maid of Fife').
Then there was the Harrogate club. The first time I went there, I saw Stefan Sobell before he started to devote most his time to making dulcimers (and, later, guitars of course). He was a great singer. Roger Knowles, and Robin and Barry Dransfield were regulars.
Then the amazing Knaresborough club and the RSC of the North, The Knaresborough Mummers.
A bit later I got involved with the Watermill Inn up-dale at Fosters' Beck, where I was often MC and sang regularly with Eric Leggoe and Steve Morrison (Steve, sadly, no longer with us).

And, does anyone remember a club in Headingly that I don't think has been mentioned yet - was it The Fox, or possibly The Vine?

Dave Sutherland - I used to travel up to the Royal Turf in Felling with Les Pope - what great nights!

It was a marvellous time - wonderful music and wonderful people.

I used to go to the Blue Bell in Hull around 1964, when I was only 14 and far too young to be going into pubs, so my friend and I always put on our high heels and make-up to make ourselves look older (we thought). I remember seeing the Watersons and Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick there. Somebody upthread mentioned Nellies in Beverley - I'm sure that was open before the mid-70s because I seem to remember going there in my late teens/early 20s.

I used to drink in Nellie's when it was still run by Nellie and Dorothy and there wasn't a folk club there up to 1968 when I left the area. There was one at The Sun which, in those days, I think was called The Fox. I also remember great nights at The Blue Bell in Hull. Those were the days whyen fol music was actually 'cool' and there were more people under 30 than over.

I started going to my local club "just over the border" at The Boundary in Worksop in the late '70s.

I used to go to many of the South Yorkshire clubs with Mitch, and Tom & Bertha Brown et al assuming we could cadge a lift. The Wheatsheaf at Barnsley, Kiveton Club at The Lord Conyers, Grapes on Trippet Lane Sheffield, Bay Horse at Bentley... All of which have been mentioned. We also used to book many of the names mentioned here at The Boundary in those days. Heady stuff.

Mind you, by reading this thread... after all these ruddy years... somebody has owned up to telling John Bartley to start learning monologues!!! One assumes the statute of limitations was checked first? Oggle goggle oggle goggle......

I recall attending the Leeds University Folk Club (among others) around 1964/5. The very first time I ever saw what we, in those days, wrongly called the "clawhammer" style (it was really Travis-type picking) was when a young guitarist called Stefan played and sang a version of "The Golden Vanity". We rushed back to student digs transfixed and got to work on it as fast as we could.

I learned, many years later, that the guitarist was called Stefan Sobell. I confirmed this by email correpondence with Stefan recently and he admitted that the young maestro was indeed himself.

Bingley Folk Club at the Ferrands Arms run by the late John Rennard and Jim Wishart. Worth turning up just for those two, never mind the great guest list. Also remember Walter Greaves was a regular there, a one armed blacksmith who sang Lloyd George, later recorded by Tony Capstick.

walter greaves was an extraordinary man, he was a world champion cyclist, he did a gig in the early eighties at mildenhall folk club in suffolk and cycled home to yorkshire the same night, not bad for someone with one arm

Greaves was born in 1907, his birth was registered in the North Bierley district, Yorkshire. He lived with his mother in Newlands Place, Undercliffe, Bradford.[2] He lost an arm in a road accident when he was 14.[2] One account says his father owned a car with running boards. His father was driving after drinking and Greaves opened the door, stood on the running board ready to jump, but was hit by a tram. His arm was so damaged that it was amputated below the elbow.[3] Other accounts said that he had hung the arm out of a train window.

He developed an interest in communism which did little to help him find work as an engineer. According to the historian John Naylor, Greaves was unemployed and according to some, almost destitute. Unemployment in Bradford was high but "his reputation as a lefty troublemaker made employers reluctant to take him on".[4] Tim Teale, a Leeds cyclist who knew Greaves said "Walter tried to make you sign up for the young communists but nobody took much notice".[5]

Greaves was an outspoken teetotaller, a practice which had a sequel when he broke the record.

The world record for distance cycled in a year began in 1911, an era when bicycle companies competed to show their machines were the most reliable. The first holder was Marcel Planes of France, with 34,666 miles (55,790 km). The competition was organised by the magazine Cycling. The record has been established nine times.[6] A tenth claim, by the English rider Ken Webb, was later disallowed.[n 1]

Many thanks for that Good Soldier. Walter was indeed a very extraordinary man. I believe (it is alleged) that he was responsible for painting many of the left wing slogans on the bridges between Bradford and Skipton that appeared in the 60's and 70's.

DEwsbury Folk began on Tuesdays in the late 50's, the first venue being above a Chinese Restaurant in Ravensthorpe (part of Dewsbury) It was run mainly by Keith Pearson and Phil (second name excapes me) and moved to the Station near the market in the early 60's which was when I first started going. Dave Burland, Bill Price, Tommy Daniels, John and Hazel Browell Dorothy Fawthrop and her mother Kate,were amongst the regulars, and you were considered to be "in" if you got a seat near the fire. Everybody paid entrance fee of 1 shilling (later raised to 1.6d)and guests were booked when funds allowed. In the early 70's I took over the running of the club and we moved up to the Shoulder of Mutton on Halifax Road. We had frequent bus trips out to other clubs, one in particular was Bubwith Club, when the bus failed to collect us at midnight and Bill Price was found curled up with the goats! The club also began having monthly ceilidhs at the rugby club and, due to a band giving backword at short notice, a band was quickly put together from the club members to fill the gap. John Browell suggested that it should be called Broomfield Wager Band, as we practised at Broomfield House and he would wager a quid that we didn't get through the evening without making a b****r of it. The club, along with the Batley Club, organised a memorial concert for Tommy Daniels in l970, and this was so successful that the following year saw the First West Riding Festival of Folk held in Dewsbury Town Hall. This Festival ran for 7 or 8 years, moving around the Heavy Woollen District to Cleckheaton, Batley, Ossett. It certainly was one of the first clubs in Yorkshire

I well remember the Grass Roots, it moved location a few times, The Royal Oak, Plummet Line, Upper George and the Crown in Horton Street, the Royal Oak was by far the best venue but as always on changing ownership, the new landlord didn't want a folk club.

Richard Collins went to Australia [ same time as a few more, Derek Scott and Jacquie Fraser ] last I heard he was working as a TV producer.

Its interesting to hear about Walter Greaves.I knew him a little, but didnt know about his cycling exploits.He became a blacksmith near Skipton. He certainly looked the part of the trad folksinger - grey beard and all - but I'm sorry to say I felt at the time, as others did,that he opportunistically found a role ready waiting for him and slipped into it,after stumbling across the vibrant leeds folk scene.Desperate to get involved, he got hold of the book Marrowbones which everyone was using in the 70s, and learned some songs from it.I think he enjoyed a kind of minor celebrity,and may even have been booked at C Sharp House by the EFDSS - but he wasnt much of a singer.I bet inwardly he was astonished that people had so easily bought into the myth they themselves had created - although to be fair I never heard him claim to be a trad singer.It was both amusing and irritating to see how quickly he set himself up as an authority on traditional unaccompanied singing.I know this sounds a bit critical - I liked him as a person, and he was a character.
Someone perhaps more worthy of respect as a mainstay of the yorkshire folk scene is Geoff Wood - still around, at the age of about 90, and still singing - I saw him a few weeks ago at the Grove.Also collector of some classic songs e.g. The Lish Young Buy-A-Broom.

Believe it or not Walter Greaves story appears in a Memories of Barnsley publication!

I did known Walter and Bill but I dont remember Tom Daniel ( no "s" I think)personally

Dorothy Fawthrop used to dance with Tom Owen of Barnsley and her mum said in my prescence that she and Tom Daniel had (re) constructed and remembered Poverty Knocks [collected by AL Lloyd] together

Dancing at Ceilds/Barndances at Heckmondwike/Batley and Wakefield afforded the chance to sing too.

John Browell leads the Christmas sings at the Wickham and Saw nr Cleckheaton each year with often, Dave Mallinson, Roy Atkinson, Ron Darnbrough, The Twentymens, NOrrie and Brenda Spence, Trevor Charnock being the current main West Riding old folkies. Mick Haywood now being in Whitby for some years

I used to help organise The Grass Roots in Halifax when it was at the Plummet Line I could usually be found taking the moeny at the door.
The club was run by Gus Grenfell aka John Smith.
Many of the artists listed above performed at the Grass Roots and at the Singing Jenny, we often booked singers for the two clubs together.
Haven't noticed Pete Stanley or Nigel Denver mentioned, quite frequent visitors to the club.
a group of us would go to the Jenny, the Topic, was that where John Pashley operated? and the club where the Seven Hills resided in leeds.

I used to floor sing in the 70s and the clubs were numerous. but I wonder who can help me. One of my favourite clubs was The Bay Horse at Tadcaster on Saturday nights. The landlord(who ran the club)was a great character himself and I believe he actually wrote the song "Sweet River Aire" which Walter Greaves used to sing. Can anyone remember his name?

Re the above threads. I used to be around the Leeds Folkscene late sixties early seventies, and can remember quite a few clubs. Here goes:- Adelphi(Bob Spray), Irish National on Kirkgate, The Elden,The Cobourg, The Guildford (Johnnie Wall), The Royal Park another one of Johnnie Walls numorous ventures, The Grove of course, The Albion at Morley, The Brunswick and Angel at Morley, Black Bull at Birstall also Wine and Spirit Vaults, Black Swan at Yeadon, The Cottages at Boroughbridge, Borough Baillif at Knaresborough, Bay Horse at Tadcaster, Seacroft(Maypole Club) which moved from Barwick in Elmet, thats it for now. If I think of any more I'll let you know. It was great you could go to a different Folk Club seven nights a week. Don't ask me to name the performers who were all top notch, I'd be here forever.

The Landlord of the Bay Horse Tadcaster 1963 to 1976 ish was a guy called John Gunning
who did indeed write the song The Sweet River Aire. Which incidentally occasionally pops up in threads about Walter Greaves

Thursday nights at the Fleece Addingham. Was run by a chap called Martin Johnston I think. From 78/9 to 82 I sat atop that piano at the back with my drinking buddy TC. On Sundays another of David's shouts was, "Shut up or I'll follow you home and talk while you perform!"

Geoff Ingham, now there's a name I remember very well from 71 - 72. Worked on the Ham on the Bone counter in Lewis's. If you went in for a chat he'd would slice you a bit which might contain a bit of his thumb. I ment him and a pile of others my first week end in Leeds - at The Grove, Brian and Keith (sadly gone) - brilliant. They invited me to a party - meeting in Whitelocks around 6 the next night - 2 buses to somewhere. Great party. Geoff and a few others ended up in a fish pond and Geoff claimed to have eaten a fish. Just before I left Leeds I asked him - did you eat a fish? He said no! Two. Got The Light Dragoon from Geoff.

Great crowd, great fun, Sunday at The Adelphi run by Bob (also sadly gone) and Hazel Sprey. Loads of other clubs. Sue Garth Mason - good singer, Dave Bulmer - accordian.

Well the Topic was there of course in various venues - before my time - I came to Bradford in 1982 but a detailed venue & guest list is on the Topic website.

The club is still going strong and it would be good to see people at our lovely new venue Glyde House. We meet every Thursday with the first Thursday being a Singers & Musicians Night and remainder guest nights - a health mix of new and upcoming artists and old favourites!

Just had a slow and nostalgic wander through all the above - could be a day or two before the smile wears off! So many familiar names/venues/clubs. I haven't scoured all the listings but one club seems to be without a mention - Wakefield Folk Club at the Green Dragon,(now Henry Boon's Westgate (fridays) ,late 60's/early 70's. I hope I'm not the "last man standing"

I was at Bretton Hall Teacher Training College from 1963 to 1966 and there was a lively weekly folk club held there .....both for the students and the general public . It was formed and run by Kevin Slater who is still very active in all forms of music in and around Telford. Mike Levon ( Holy Ground Records ) made many live recordings of the folk sessions there and some are used on later C.D s....see Holy Ground Records website . We also sang and played in the legendary MOODIE'S BAR in 9 Bread Street , Wakefield which was NOT a folk club as such but was a gem for live folk music. Here , too , Mike made many live recordings.

In the centre of Wakefield was the WOOLPACK hotel which housed a weekly folk club for a number of years and was run by Tony Foxworthy . I believe he is still very active in Folk Music.

The Folk scene is today extremely active in and around Wakefield ( see Fernandes Folk and Bull And Fair House Folk ).You are always very welcome.

Yes Bretton Hall was a music college I think too and I remember being at the folk events on occasion up in the rafters a barn maybe?


Wakefield had contemporary folk with Gifford Rolfe and Andrew Mullins at a venue in a park building off Denby Dale rd Wakefield witha dedicated following who didnt go many other place

Woolpack was famous barn dance venue centre of Wakfield and had the Mathews Brothers semi resident for some time early 70s

I came to Hull in 1975 and it opened about a year later. Guest that first night (done as a favour to the organiser Ray Williams) was Mick Elliott. I think the first "proper" guest night a few weeks later was Pegleg Ferret.

In the early days it still had the old gas lamps in place and it was the first time the room had been used since the nineteen thirties. It also had the original bar (not the monstrosity that's there now) which was a marble table with a washing up bowl underneath. The beer pumps were set into the back wall.

PS It also had about the best acoustics of any room I've been in although the roaring fire behind the guests could play hell with tuning :)

The White Swan was it? where Beverley folk club continued till changes in management and licencing

This was great venue for the folk festival and Nellies, was the nickname as the old landlady dispensed beer by ladle or someother such means and was I was told a character, I got the impression the tables downstairs were wooden and big and had many a scrubbing down

Upstairs still lit by gaslight and wicks on the wall for many a year, late Geoff Turner did the door during folk festival and had help from Brenda and Norrie Spence (now in Leeds at the Grove fc!) and Chris Wade a festival director

Nellies in Beverley (The White Horse) didn't become a folk club until after Nelly and family had departed. I am reasonably sure it started in 1974 or 5. I used to sing there and occasionally at Driffield and Holme-upon-Spalding Moor until I left the area. I also have memories of some of the other places mentioned in other threads especially Halifax and Huddersfield.

Just stumbled on this site, it takes me back. My favourite club was the informal Cherry Tree, run by "Geordie Tyke" (actually Sid was really a Macam). Even my wife felt so relaxed and comfortable that she sang with me.
Ray Padgett ran the first couple of clubs that we regularly attended and the first time I plucked up courage to sing was with Ray's blessing at a pub in Barnsley.
The Centenary Rooms at Barnsley was where we first saw Martin Carthy, The Watersons, Tony Rose, Tony Capstick, Magic Lantern (Shadow puppet group, brilliant); but Ray Padgett also got some great artists to headline at his clubs- Dave Burland, Wendy Grossman from USA and Roy Bailey spring to mind.
Glad I happened on this site. We moved to the North East after the strike and never got back onto the folk scene really after 1986.
Thanks for the memories you've all just triggered and to those who listened to us, entertained us and made us part of a vibrant, friendly and rewarding scene.

I remember regularly joining a convoy of Folkies from the Harrogate, Knaresborough, Ripon area. We would travel down the A61 to the Eagle on North Street ,Leeds on a sunday lunchtime.there were some great clubs in those days. including the borough Bailiff at Knaresborough, courtesy of john and Maggie Burrell et al . Harrogate theatre, Foster Beck, Grewelthorpe, Kirby Malzeard, The Blackamore at Ripon, where Roger Knowles was a regular. I was at sea a lot of the time so missed many great acts

A lot to read here but Richmond doesn't seem to have had a mention.
Mid sixties at The Oak Tree, (which now is houses) my first FC and been going in Richmond ever since, sometimes called a FC sometimes just what happened on a Friday. Currently (2019) back at The Black Lion and usually in the best room upstairs (unless the landlord gets a better offer).

I have many happy memories of the folk scene in Halifax, Richard Collins - what a great guy! I think he will remember me . If you read this Richard I send you and yours very best wishes and good luck in all you do down under !
The Fleece in Addingham was a favourite haunt for me and my friends , very happy days .

Does anyone know about a pub called “Mcreadys” that was in Leeds in the 1960’s? Mcready may have been the name of the Landlord. Been in Leeds nearly 30 years and not heard of it.

I have just read this thread and have thoroughly enjoyed the references to David Harrison and my late father David Hopton. I too have fond memories of being a youngster and singing along side to two of these fantastic figures in my life. Long live their memories and their crazy antics. X

I ran the Ferrands Arms F. C. with Jon Rennard & Bob Clark an American. Every Wed for many years. Ewan Mcall & Peggy Seger were our top guests. Also Jeremy Taylor & Bernard Wrigley & Richard Digance, Maddy Prior & Tim Hart. Sadly Jon was killed in a car crash @ the height of his career. Tony Capstick let us down on one of our big celebration nights but we managed to get The Oldham Tinkers.Happy Days!

At one time Roy Atkinson (AKA Colonel Custard), Steve Gardham and myself were doing bookings under the name of Custer's Mufflers (Don't ask!).
We were invited to Noel's Club and did a 45 minute first spot. We then expected to do a similar set to round off the night.
Noel duly introduced us and off we went expecting to get the two more signal after half an hour or so.
After 90 minutes we asked if we could stop as we had run out of group material? Noel agreed if we could just finsh things off with a chorus song each!
After an hour driving back and dropping Roy and Steve off I finally got to bed at 2:45am.
Happy days.

un those days it was a good tradtional club with a good audience i played the other club in york too that eventually became the black swan , not the same atmosphere at all, ye sthey were happy days when trad songs were appreciated and clubs were generally full

I vaguely remember Custer's Mufflers was an offshoot of Custer's Last Band or it might have been a merger between CLB and something with Mufflers in the name. Again only vague recollection from the early 70s but CLB could have been a musicians band with John Barnes involved, although I can remember Roy being involved. Yes, great times, Malcolm. I wish I could remember them all. I remember some great gigs with the whole of the Bluebell road show, mummers, dancers, singers, musicians. What was that place in York where we used to perform, a vaulted ceiling something like the Cavern in Liverpool?

Steve - Lendal Cellars off Coney Street has an underground vaulted ceiling but I don't know if it ever hosted a folk club as only moved here four years ago!

Might be, Joe. I have checked the records and it was part of the University in the city centre and was actually called The Cellar. 18th Jan 1969 with the Grehan Sisters. The earliest ceili we had in York with the Watersons was April 67.

That's another day in my lifelong diary filled in.
I have photos of the shows at York and a copy of myself singing at one of the show team does at Hornsea.
I am fairly certain Eric Mann capture me for posterior!
The York venue was not actually part of the University as it did not actually exist as such then - may have been Kings College.

According to my records your first booking at the Bluebell was 10th June 1979 for which you received the princely sum of £22. I did the club on the 18th March and got £13.50. From 1988 to 1994 you did regular gigs at the club.
