Subject: Chris Thile to replace Garrison Keillor From: Wesley S Date: 28 Jun 15 - 11:37 PM This works for me: Story Here By Bradley Klein Cincinnati, Ohio — A mandolin player is about to assume one of the highest profile positions in public radio. Garrison Keillor, long-time host and creator of the public radio show A Prairie Home Companion has hinted broadly in recent years that he was nearing the end of his tenure as host. But recently in a press interview and during a taping of the show, he has indicated that Chris Thile will be the stepping into that role, after serving as guest host on two occasions earlier this year. Mandolin Cafe correspondent Bradley Klein confirmed the rumors, meeting with Thile after Saturday's Punch Brothers show in Cincinnati, Ohio. "Everything Garrison said is true, and I'm really excited," said Thile. Keillor is expected to retain an active role in the coming season and beyond, juggling the jobs of host, co-host, writer, and executive producer, over a lengthy transition. Thile indicated tremendous respect for the program Garrison has built, and for its large and loyal audience. He says that aspects of the show will evolve but that it will retain its important role in nurturing up-and-coming musicians. |

Subject: RE: Chris Thile to replace Garrison Keillor From: GUEST,gillymor Date: 29 Jun 15 - 06:44 AM I heard the shows that Chris hosted and he was a little shaky at times but showed some potential. Hearing him made me realize what a great job Keillor does every week, except for the singing of course. |

Subject: RE: Chris Thile to replace Garrison Keillor From: PHJim Date: 29 Jun 15 - 10:12 AM I wonder if we'll ever see a thread that says "Chris Thile, The bad mandolin player who..." |
Subject: RE: Chris Thile to replace Garrison Keillor From: GUEST Date: 29 Jun 15 - 12:45 PM Chris is an incredible mandolin player, and he's very good in the radio dramas. Can he do Lake Woebegone stories too? Or maybe some other kind of stories? Garrison is so good at so many things, but unfortunately he's just not in the same league as all the terrific guest singers he gets. |
Subject: RE: Chris Thile to replace Garrison Keillor From: GUEST,RBerman Date: 29 Jun 15 - 01:09 PM I don't see Thile sticking with this for decades. PHC was Keillor's baby, and it should come and go with him. |
Subject: RE: Chris Thile to replace Garrison Keillor From: Don Firth Date: 29 Jun 15 - 01:10 PM I've been listening to Prairie Home Companion for a couple of decades now, and it never occurred to me that it was a singing contest between the guests and the host.... I just enjoyed it for what it seemed to be. Silly me! Don Firth |
Subject: RE: Chris Thile to replace Garrison Keillor From: GUEST,gillymor Date: 29 Jun 15 - 01:46 PM I think Garrison's voice is quite effective when he's singing his parodies, leading singalongs or singing bass in the Hopeful Gospel Quartet but I do get a bit frustrated when he does duets with fine singers like Emmylou Harris, Aiofe O'Donavan, Suzy Boguss etc. For me it can and usually does queer a potentially sublime performance. But it's his show and he's given us so much thay it's easy to overlook his indulgence. |
Subject: RE: Chris Thile to replace Garrison Keillor From: Mr Red Date: 29 Jun 15 - 03:22 PM Well my first thought was what the other three Horsemen of the Apocalypse were assigned to! But looking at Chris Thile's Wiki page it does rather tell an eclectic and open mind. And I never worried about Garrison's singing. Despite my engineering background I took the show in its entirity. Holistically. And found it good. The King is dead, Long live the King. |
Subject: RE: Chris Thile to replace Garrison Keillor From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 30 Jun 15 - 10:53 AM Much of the music on PHC falls well outside my personal taste, but the music on the shows Chris Thile hosted this past season was the best I've heard there in a long time. It's exciting to think about some of the artists who may be on the show in the future, attracted because they'd be sharing a stage with Chris Thile. I'm already visualizing a Thile, Bush, Grisman mandolin summit meeting. I only hope PHC's budget can handle the potential traffic. |

Subject: RE: Chris Thile to replace Garrison Keillor From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 30 Jun 15 - 12:19 PM No, Bela Fleck plays the wrong instrument. The New Arthur Godfrey Show would star Jake Shimabukuro. |
