Subject: RE: BS: Trump Actions and Effects From: Donuel Date: 11 Nov 22 - 10:31 PM We all get the Guardian. You don't get the WP or NYT. Figures. I'm surprised you don't post on MOAB where you give us all quite a laugh with your posts and mistakes. The official elevation of Denver is measured on the West steps outside the building, where the fifteenth step is engraved with the words "One Mile Above Sea Level." From this step, at 5,280 feet (1,609m), the sun can be seen setting behind the Rocky Mountains. A second mile high marker was set in the 18th step in 1969 when Colorado State University students resurveyed the elevation. In 2003, a more accurate measurement was made with modern means, and the 13th step was identified as being one mile (1.6km) high, where a third marker was installed. After this midterm you can get very high in Colorado now that magic mushrooms are legal for consumption and cultivation. |
Subject: RE: BS: Trump Actions and Effects From: Steve Shaw Date: 11 Nov 22 - 08:05 PM Apropos of my earlier post, from the Guardian live feed: Some Republican senators have called for a delay in the party’s leadership elections scheduled to take place next week. While Mitch McConnell, the current minority leader, was expected to continue in his role, three GOP senators have been circulating a letter calling to postpone the vote scheduled for Wednesday morning, Politico reported. The letter, shared by Senators Ron Johnson, Mike Lee and Rick Scott, said: “We are all disappointed that a Red Wave failed to materialize, and there are multiple reasons it did not. We need to have serious discussions within our conference as to why and what we can do to improve our chances in 2024.” Senators Marco Rubio and Josh Hawley also have supported the calls for a delay, CNN reported. |

Subject: RE: BS: Trump Actions and Effects From: Steve Shaw Date: 11 Nov 22 - 04:54 PM You poor thing. Anyway... From Jonathan Freedland in the Guardian, commenting on Trump's "setback" in the midterms: "So no shortage of lessons from America. Of course, the differences between there and everywhere else are obvious and nothing reads across precisely. Except for one thing. What the US election proved once more is that the conventional wisdom is often wrong, that fatalism is always wrong – and that, every now and then, politics can turn out right." Well let's hope so. The usual suspect topics (abortion among them) didn't do it for Trump and his brain-dead acolytes. However, let's not pretend that that far-right tosser in Florida couldn't be just as bad. |

Subject: RE: BS: Trump Actions and Effects From: Donuel Date: 11 Nov 22 - 02:24 PM Dave, Perhaps the 'crowd' is as many as 7 people who actually read or care about a subject here. I run into similar problems with British phraseology and especially unfamiliar names or your local events. I accept these gaps in communication. For example, If I say Betty White at the end of a mass shooting event post, you would not get it, but in America, it is a popular joke that Betty White stands for 'I bet he is white'. An excellent translator has to take factors into account most of us do not consider. I have done humorous stories about the high jinx that can ensue from poor translation between world leaders. Even Shakespear plots can turn on a mistaken word or idea. If you asked "Did she take it all down?", your folks know what you are saying. In America we would be confused or having X rated thoughts, |

Zuckerberg has lost a hundred billion dollars and Musk had to sell Tesla stock to manage his Twitter debt. The gravity of reason is pulling America back from the cliff. Subject: RE: BS: Trump Actions and Effects From: Steve Shaw Date: 09 Nov 22 - 04:57 AM From yesterday's Guardian. The future of American democracy is at stake in the midterm elections (Andrew Gawthorpe) The majority of the Republican candidates for the House of Representatives are election-deniers – and a Republican-controlled Congress might attempt to sabotage the certification of the next presidential vote. Midterm elections are generally seen as less important than presidential elections. The stakes seem lower, which means fewer people turn out to vote. Most of the time the party controlling the White House takes losses, and this predictability can make midterms seem less important too: what can one voter do against the strength of the political tides? But occasionally there are midterms whose stakes rise beyond whether or not the president’s party will be able to pass new laws, and instead concern the whole future of the American republic. This year is one of them. That’s because this year, the majority of Republican candidates running for Congress, governor’s mansions, and other key statewide offices have denied or questioned the results of the 2020 presidential election. Donald Trump’s attempted coup failed in 2020 because officeholders at the federal and state level refused to go along with it. This year’s midterm elections could change all of that, producing a set of Republican officials willing to extinguish American democracy. [Andrew Gawthorpe is a historian of the United States at Leiden University and host of the podcast America Explained] This is a day out of date, admittedly, and it's just a short extract from quite a long read. It isn't just American democracy that's in peril... |

OR How to deform a more Perfect Union, Establish Injustice, Ensure Domestic Riots, Provide for the Uncommon Defense, Demote the General Welfare, and Secure the Blessings of Liberty to 'ourselves' and our prosperity, to Ordain and Establish our own Hedgemony Constitution for the rich in America... I will only go back to the time of my own first hand experience although the historic roots can go back to ancient times. In 1958 the John Birch Society put on a suit and tie and represented a new image for the conservative right which had formerly been KKK values. In 1971 a guy named Powell created a memo for the Republican Party that outlined the long term steps needed to gain power forever. It included things they called think tanks and quickly outnumbered Democratic think tanks 100 to 1. Powell also made strategies to undo the New Deal and change education to shape young minds. By calling government big and evil the cracks became wider to elect big government corruptors. The only thing that trickled down was meanness. Changing definitions and the narrative was crucial. For example, journalism was based on the premise of objectivity and reason to reveal the truth. Republicans changed that from objectivity to 'balance' so if 99% believed in climate science the 1 percent deniers have an equal voice due to 'balance'. This strategy was most apparent in the Bush Jr. years. Also, vote tampering with computers was introduced and using the Court to decide elections. THE DEATH OF THE FAIRNESS DOCTRINE The news had always been required to be a public service in the public interest but that was stopped by Reagan. New talk radio was now sanctioned to become pure demagoguery rife with racism. Enter the Internet and later the ultimate King of Mean... and we are here. |

Subject: RE: BS: Trump Actions and Effects From: Charmion Date: 08 Nov 22 - 10:24 AM In my opinion, the new right wing's problem with government is that it can, and will, level the playing field if permitted to do so. The unemployed. Those with health issues. She goes back to Reagan and before in her churlish treatment of most of her state's population. I think it was Tommy Thompson (of Wisconsin) during the Clinton era who made it so difficult for families with dependent children to get benefits, etc. They just plain don't think the government has a role in leveling the playing field. |
