Hello Everybody there!

It's the first time I write to this site, but I hope to help others in the future...

I've heard "Kimiad", by A. Stivell, in a compilation of celtic music made by an italian New Age editor, and I loved it at once!!

But in this CD there are not the words (I would like very much to sing and play it) :-( ...

Is there anybody there who wants to post the lyrics or tell me a link where I could find them (I've tried many researches in Internet, but I couldn't find anything...)?

There are sound samples at Yahoo! Music but the lyrics are in some Celtic language -- possibly Breton -- which I can't transcribe. Maybe someone else can help.

The backing vocals are by Kate Bush on Alan Stivell's album Again, so maybe searching for lyrics sung by Kate may have more luck.

I have 2 books: 1) Renaissance de la Harpe Celtique, 2) Reflets, & A L'Olympia.

They don't have the tunes you are looking for, Guest, but they are the harp arrangements and not just the melody lines.

I have all Stivells albums on vinyl; he did some great stuff and still does.
The Breton tune used in some versions of Twa Corbies is Son Ar Cistre (Song of Cider).
I've got a copy of Ian Morrison's reel somewhere; I'll try and dig it out.

The song using a similar tune to Twa Corbies is Not Son ar Chistr, but An Alarc'h (spelling!?!) on Olympia. I think I have the words to Kimiad somewhere, full title is something like Kimiad ar Soudard Yauoank, The young soldier's farewell.

Right you are, Jonathan Hill. Son Ar Chistr (or ev chistr laou) is used in English for Willie's Lady. I believe it was Ray Fisher who first borrowed the tune, and I believe it was Stivell she borrowed it from. I would not be surprised if she were also the singer behind using An Alarc'h for The Twa Corbies.

Hi Marco,

Both my AS books were published by Intersong in Paris in the 1980's sometime. There is no information in either book (although I just quickly scanned the Preface in French in the Reflets/A l'Olympia book, using my very limited high schol French) and I can see no information about how he tuned the harp.

Someone once told me that he sometimes tunes the harp to a pentatonic scale and this makes some of the more expressive pieces work very well because all of the strings can be played together for example in a glissando and they harmonise with each other, which is not possible if the harp is tuned in the usual way. If you want to know the key signature of any pieces I can tell you that.

Can I suggest that you join Mudcat because when you are a member you can use the Personal Messages to write individually to other members. It is free to join and there are other benefits. It is an excellent on-line community and I am sure that you would not regret joining. I would rather correspond with you through Mudcat than via our own emails.

I first heard of Stivell in about 72. I saw him at the Dome in Brighton in 76. It was a great concert.

Ive always used it to sooth away stress. Saw Stivell in concert in 1976. Very exciting music. Renaissance of Celtic harp Album especially good. I recognised a lot of the Irish tunes years later when I started going to an Irish music session.

Then I used Babelfish to translate the french into English.

Thats great.... it flows very well. Stivell says the words with an accompaniment so Im sure your translation would work very well.

Babel fish is just an approximation and my GCE fail at French doesnt stretch to turning it into proper English.
