Do you understand the chord number system given above? For example XOO232 = don't play 6th string ( X indicates this), play 5th and 4th strings open (0 represent an open string), hold 3rd string down at second fret, hold second string down at third fret, and, finally, hold first string down at second fret. And, of course, this is a D major chord. The song contain mainly D,G and A chords, and there variants, plus a Bmin chord where the lyrics " where the tall grass" appears

I suppose this isn't the song you were thinking of (in this thread), but it made me think of Dave Mallett's "Summer of My Dreams." Kathy Mattea had a bit of a hit with it, and I heard Jean Redpath do a wonderful performance of the song on Prairie Home Companion.
