Guitars are serious. That's why. I think.

I have two bodhrans and mostly I look at the cases they are in rather than playing them. The latest is a cymbal case, Sabian, very handy for carrying other small things too. The other case is handmade from an old camping mat, a rag rug and scrap fabric (Spiderman design left over from maternity outfits), its very bright and distinctive and nobody else wants it. Do be careful with your bodhran case though I know someone visiting with friends at a festival who sat down on the bodhran in its case because it looked like a pillow. OOPS! but no harm done.

You are, Bert

And banjos

But not guitars, for some reason

I ended up making my own as a shoulder type bag with a big pocket for my bod and a (slightly) smaller pocket for all the other junk I end up carrying around clubs, festivals etc. Unfortunately everyone else seems to want stuff carried too but it's far more successful than my daughter bought in bodran case - and was far, far cheaper!

I made it from the stuff car seats are made out of and sewed it on my old machine with strong thread.

An "Iron Maiden" (TM) case fitted with stainless steel knives is one suggestion.

The most fun such case I ever saw was decorated with a parody of the Suzuki spare wheel copulating rhinos, only in this case it was goats!

Bert, that's like saying a guitar is made of wood and steel and therefore needs no case. The goatskin is particularly susceptible to damage from any number of things, including heat, cold, sharp objects, unappreciative spouses, etc.

Now let me think... The best cases are made from wood and leather.
A Bodhran is made from wood and leather... Hmmm... do you really 'need' a case?

If you do, wouldn't a slightly larger Bodhran do the job just perfectly?

Sorcha,

Your answer makes a lot of sense to me. Though I'm no bodhran player, when I someday count myself among the learners, I'll surely do what I did for my cello: a _very_ custom quilt, handle and two-way zipper scavenged from a discarded suitcase... It is double-quilted, so $4(Can.) for thread, about $7 for the batting; fabric from my stash. Pockets for rosin, bow, music, chest pad, and far more pleasant to the eye than those nylon jobs.

Brendy, I believe (according to June Tabor) it was Les Barker who suggested playing the bodhran with a penknife (to the tune of "There's a Hole in the Bucket, Dear Henry, Dear Henry").

Callie, when I first acquired my (first) bodhran I, too, thought my car the perfect carrying case. That was until I left it in the hot sun for a few hours and had a bodhran blowout. Don't let this happen to you.

I got a case from Blue Heron cases. I don't remember the url but you can find them if you run a search engine, and also there is a link on Christine Lavin's website. (They also make guitar cases.) They're a good .5 to .75 inches thick of soft padding under a heavy water-resistant nylon with really heavy zippers. It's got a big pocket and a shoulder strap. They're based in California. There's a bit of a wait for delivery, but worth it.

Wasn't it Seamus Ennis that once said, that the only proper way to play a bodhran was with a penknife?

'Spaw also beat me to the punch about the Rubbermaid containers! The thought occured however, that if you jump on the damn thing long enough it would probably fit into the average banjo case. (Unlike a trampoline, there is NO need to remove your shoes first!) If done properly there would still be enough room in the neck part for a few bottles of your favorite bubbly!

I agree with BigDaddy. I also have a similar case from RoundStone. It works brilliantly, and has a large enough zippered pocket in front to carry tippers, etc.

I recommend the tweed-type case from Roundstone instruments. Elderly Instruments carries it at a reasonable price. It wears well, stands up to weather and other abuses. Don't waste your time on an inexpensive (cheap) nylon case. Straps break, zipper blow-out, etc. Cheers!

SPAW!!!!!!
You beat me to it old chum- I was going to say in honnor of Sheamus Ennis, that a bodhran fits nicely into a garbage can or small dumpster, and if it is too big, a trash compactor is good for tailoring the drum....
I use a pillow case on occation my self, and a trash bag if it is raining... Once in Southern England, my wife and I were walking towards Ireland, when a VERY large peeler came up to us - the old tall helmet and all, and said, "Oye hef gootten a report of GYPSIES in the nieghbor hood, with a Gypsy TAMBOREEN... But, Oye will serprise youw, by saying that Oye know youw t'be Orish musicians with a Bod - Rhan Drum, Am I right, Sir?"
In proper Thrity nine steps style, I replied "Quite right sir."

Actually, I made ours, out of Naugahyde (fake leather/ie plastic seat cover stuff). I used a 2" (5cm) soft foam pad on the head side, and a one way brass utility zipper. Case will hold:
drum, small electric hair dryer, spray bottle and small tamborine. Outside pouch will hold :
tippers, jawbone and scraper, music (for Me,not Himself), harmonica, and CAR KEYS!!Not a big deal, PM me if you want specific instructions. Cheaper than any of the above which is why I made one, instead of buying. It has worked quite well for 5 years, and Himself is happy with it. Cost us $2 US for the zipper, and about $8 US for the Naugahyde.

And I know that you didn't want a cymbal case, but my large bodhran is a 22". Even Elderly didn't have a case that fit it. I found a cymbal case with a Sabian logo that had a pouch on the front which carries my tippers and other assorted junk. You would think it was custom made for it.

I went to my local music store, and had them cut a hard-shell floor-tom case to size. Cost about $35.00, and works perfectly.
All the best.

Since Elderly has already been given by Mick (one of us is bound to on any thread like this), might I also suggest your local K-Mart's Rubbermaid section. An 18" will fit nicely in the model GRCN/1830 trash can with room left over for your accordion. What day is your garbage pick up?

Anyone know of a good place to buy (DFW area) or order a case for an 18" bodhran? I'm looking for a case that is DESIGNED to be used for a bodhran, not just any case that will fit (e.g. cymbal case). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
