Subject: What are people's Christmas plans? From: GUEST,Desdemona Date: 24 Dec 01 - 02:39 PM Just wondering how we're all planning to spend the holiday. For my brood, my husband is Swedish, so we spend Xmas Eve w/his family doing that aquavit-drinkin', meatball-eatin', weird-song-singin' thing till pretty late; kids open prezzies, etc. Xmas morning is spent at home playing with new toys, listening to music & generally eating too much breakie. Xmas afternoon/evening at my mother's eating English roast beef & Yorkshire pud & yet more prezzies. Xmas night.....belching. How about y'all? |

From: katlaughing Date: 24 Dec 01 - 02:46 PM Family scattered and the ones who are here, with the exception of my SO, I don't really spend too much time with...time to live closer to grandkids or something, 'cause this is no fun.:-) It will be a quiet day except Rog and I always do have fun making the meal with turkey, etc. |

Subject: RE: BS: What are people's Christmas plans? From: GUEST,Desdemona Date: 24 Dec 01 - 02:50 PM In truth, kat, I often think about how lovely it would be to spend the holiday with just my own little family, ideally in our pajamas. While in one way it's lovely to see lots of people, it also gets a bit frantic & exhausting---by the time the whole thing's over, the children are completely wiped out, and so are we. The idea of cooking a nice meal, sipping some wine & listening to music is verrrrry appealing. How many grandchildren do you have? Did you send along lots of loot? |

Subject: RE: BS: What are people's Christmas plans? From: katlaughing Date: 24 Dec 01 - 03:34 PM Just the twin 3 year old grandsons, Desdemona. They get lots of loot from their parents and other relatives so we usually try to provide one big thing for each. This year it is bright red, Radio Flyer tricycles. I know about getting over-taxed with so many, but right now, I'd welcome a Christmas with all three of my children here and wanting to be. Sorry, I am not trying to co-opt your thread to whinge and moan, just hit me at a low spot. I've come to the conclusion that I was so wanting to raise my kids to NOT feel compelled to be home for Christmas or feel guilty if they weren't, that I overdid it and they are too independent! **BG** AlanKH, welcome to the Mudcat and I hope you get the snow you'd like! Thanks, kat |

Subject: RE: BS: What are people's Christmas plans? From: GUEST,Desdemona Date: 24 Dec 01 - 03:45 PM Kat---no apologies necessary; we all get a bit whingy around the holidays (at least *I* do!). In so mnay ways it's just a time so fraught with all sorts of emotional stuff that it's a bit of a wonder we survive it more or less intact year after year! I think about the days when my kids are grown up and independent the same way I do about science fiction: hard to imagine. But I know it does in fact come all too quickly; my eldest son turned 15 in November, and it's hard to wrap my mind around the fact that this large person with the frequently crappy attitude is in fact my baby boy! At the other end, my "real" baby just turned 7, 2 weeks ago, and I'm having much ado to get used to him reading, writing and---yes!---whistling! radio Flyers are the PERFECT gift for 3 year old boys; they'll love them! Happy holidays and very warm wishes to you! D. D. |

From: Amergin Date: 24 Dec 01 - 04:49 PM Well...tomorrow I will be spending it with my parents and sibs....and get to watch them open the presents I got them...african queen (the book) and a couple of cds for dad....mickey mouse watch for mom...wiccan books for my sister...lotr and the soundtrack= for fellowship of the rings for my brother.... Today I sent a package out to my goddaughter and her family...got her a couple of outfits...a couple of books on irish fairy tales (one is a book of traveller stories and you are never too young for a tale), and a couple of noisy musical toys that start playing whenever you shake them (it's to get back at her dad...he broke my nose in a cargo hold a few years ago, we became good mates afterwards)... Then, this Saturday, I am going down to Orange County...to spend a few days with a wonderful lovely woman....and we will be having our own quiet Christmas dinner of grilled tuna steaks, sauteed mushrooms...salad and wine...and each other....

Subject: RE: BS: What are people's Christmas plans? From: Haruo Date: 24 Dec 01 - 05:05 PM Leaving in a half an hour for my aunt's in Kirkland (just across the floating bridge from Seattle), where my brothers and at least two, maybe all four of my kissing cousins and their broods will gather (so my sister who's a missionary in southern Mexico will be the only quasisibling missing). We will eat, sing, exchange presents, and I will get my annual (overdue! it's usually a turkey-day occurrence) haircut. I am giving my secret persons (quasinephew Joel and his bride Jennifer) a book of Jimmy Carter's Sunday School lessons, signed by His Majesty himself (and wrapped in the issue of the Yiddish Forward that covered Sept. 11. That will occupy me till maybe too late to make it back to my church's Christmas Eve service, so I'll probably come down here (I'm in the church office) and make hay on the computer in lieu of midnight mass. Tomorrow (Christmas Day) I'll go to the AA Hall for potluck. Liland |

Subject: RE: BS: What are people's Christmas plans? From: gnu Date: 24 Dec 01 - 05:05 PM Just finished a big Eve supper with my mother. Like to do special stuff for her at Xmas. BBQ'd steaks... yeah, I said BBQ. It's 6C and no wind here in Moncton, NB and I know the BBQ ain't gonna be much use in a few weeks. It's a wonder that the weather is so warm now... maybe global BBQ'ing is the cause. Tomorrow, off to my brother's mid-morning to watch his grandkids open their presents. Then a huge scoff of turkey and ham with all the fixin's. Then, as soon as I can get away from the hoopla, I'm going to plant my ass in front my fireplace with my Hran and cassettes made in kitchen sessions past and get loaded and celebrate the fact that Xmas is over and done for another year... I wonder if I can Hran to George Thorogood's (sp ?), "I Drink Alone" ? Shite, sorry for the bummer post... but that's what I'm gonna do. Besides have anudder talk wi' Alfred about the lambs laying under the palms in the breeze.

Just 4 of us to cook for here; perhaps a couple of the kids friends will drop by to eat. Mr. is pursuing the wily goose until noon so we are not doing pressies until after he gets in then a late dinner. Today I made the Southwest Quiche for breakfast, salads and Yule Log chocolate cake for dessert. Tomorrow I just have to put the turkey in, make dressing, potatoes and gravy. It will be a relatively quiet day around here. |

Subject: RE: BS: What are people's Christmas plans? From: Don Firth Date: 24 Dec 01 - 07:24 PM Lots of Christmases Barbara and I wind up at either my sister Pat's place with a batch of nieces and nephews and spouses and kids and in-laws. Or we wind up at one of Barbara's cousins, where the personnel is essentially the same on that side of the family. Sometimes, like this year, we're having a fairly quiet Christmas at home. Barbara and I know several people who don't have family in the area and are on their own during the holidays, so we're having some of them here. The agenda includes traditional activities such as conversation, music, eating, exchanging a few simple presents, and laying around burping and scratching. Don Firth |

Subject: RE: BS: What are people's Christmas plans? From: Sorcha Date: 24 Dec 01 - 07:25 PM I have been rendered "horse de combat" by the kitchen. Still have to vacum the carpet, cook supper, put the sheets back on the bed, and do 3 more loads of laundry. I'm glad I don't have to stay up late to do SantaShit.
Oh, yea, if it's nice tomorrow, I really should pick up dog sh*t in the back yard. We now own 3 and are sitting 2. Five dogs make a LOT of dog crap! Bubba brought home a "stray" Aussie/Dobe cross that does sit, down, heel, stay and is housebroken. Some stray. I can't believe no one is looking for him. Only problem is he has "decorations" so the housebroken part is sometimes over ridden by Territoral Urge.........this dog even plays with the cats instead of terrorizing them! I don't wanna cook supper--I wanna go to bed!! Can't though, the dogs expect bedtime treats at 10. Cripes, even I can't believe there are 5 dogs here. I'm an idiot!! |

Ever since then have had two friends round for dinner, or gone to theirs. They have parted company this year and we had nowhere to go (it was their turn....), so it's just us, the bratling and the cats. And a big piece of beef... And a tin of chocolates.... And some sprouts. I love sprouts! Boxing day is off to the ballet for Bratling (her first) and to a Mummers play and pub for us!! Subject: RE: BS: What are people's Christmas plans? From: catspaw49 Date: 25 Dec 01 - 05:09 AM It's about a quarter til five in the AM........Last night as we have for almost 15 years, we spent Christmas Eve with Connie and Wayne and their sons Ricky (16) and David (12). We are an "invented" family. Connie and I met when teaching together and something clicked. She was indeed the sister I never had. As it turned out, Wayne and I grew up in small towns only a few miles apart and at the same time, but we'd never met and equally spooky is that our family cemetery plots border each other in the old cemetery back home. They are our family and we theirs, though today they will spend Christmas as always at Connie's parents with Wayne's Dad and sister there too. Why am I telling you this? I suppose it's because that Karen and I have a truly "wonderful life" and it's made special by our friends. Although Karen has sisters and her Mom in Atlanta, I have no living relatives and our boys (9) have had the benefits of a warm loving family because we have had the "luxury" of choosing that family. Connie and Wayne and Karen and I have weathered so much in the past years and in every case we have always "been there" for each other, in every instance, no matter what. We feel no stronger as family on Christmas Eve than we do any other time, but the traditions of things we do on that day down to the Oyster stew are touchstones in our lives and when they are here on New Year's Day, we'll kind of complete the feeling.....another year, more deeply bonded, and closer than many bio families ever are. We got home at 1 AM and "Santa" finished the stockings off at about 2 and copped a couple hours sleep. We'll have a nice Christmas, Michael will get all the biggies on his list, Tristan will be happy with having things to unwrap.....as long as one of them is a "big truck." They are the lights of our life and although I considered killing them the past week as they were driven by the Christmas spirit to be the pains in the ass that kids can be at this time of year, in a few hours they'll be playing with the new things both have been dreaming about. We'll have leg of lamb for Christmas dinner and Karen and I will count our many blessings, not hte least of which are all of you here at the 'Cat. A number of you will get calls today as we continue to invent our family. Well, it's time for me to build a fire in the fireplace and then wake up the finest life partner anyone has ever or will ever have. We'll spend a few moments together quietly before the onslaught of two excited young boys..........and she'll get her stuffed bear, another tradition with a story far too long to tell. Merry Christmas to all of you.....I value your friendship and this place more than words can say. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: What are people's Christmas plans? From: Alice Date: 25 Dec 01 - 01:18 PM We spent some Christmas time celebration last weekend with friends (a mother, Nona, and daughter, Valerie) whom I have known since the 1960's, when they were neighbors to my family in Helena. I was in high school, and Valerie in grade school, so I would baby sit her whenever her mom was out for an evening. Most of my family have passed away or have lost touch with me, so my son Ryan and I felt very at home to be with Nona and Valerie. Nona hired me to work as her assistant in the Governor's office the summer after I graduated from high school, 1970. She was my mentor, the woman I looked up to for inspiration as I went off to college the end of that summer. Nona and Valerie then moved to New York City, where Val finished school and Nona worked for the City of New York. Valerie is now a union organizer for medical workers in San Francisco, and Nona just retired, still living in Brooklyn. We met at Big Sky Friday evening, spent Saturday seeing the Grizzly and Wolf recovery center (hooowwwwwll) in West Yellowstone, then they took me out to dinner at Lone Mountain Ranch to celebrate my 50th birthday, which was Dec. 20th. I have to say it was the best Christmas and birthday I've ever had, even though we didn't really celebrate them "on the day".
Nona's work place was right across the bridge from the World Trade Centers - it was her office view. It was very comforting for us to be together. We returned to town on Sunday, and they helped us decorate our Christmas tree before they left for Great Falls to be with Nona's mother for Christmas. Last night we opened a few presents we received. Ryan is really into the Lord of the Rings, so his wish fulfilled was to get two movie posters of Frodo - one looking up, and one looking down at the ring. A typical teenager, his room is filled with posters. Most of them he gets for free from the local video stores and cable tv office, where he asks the staff to save posters and point of purchase displays for him.
We are having a quiet morning in our jammies and will spend a quiet day just being home together and counting our blessings.
Love and merry Christmas from Montana to all of you. Alice |

Subject: RE: BS: What are people's Christmas plans? From: CarolC Date: 25 Dec 01 - 09:02 PM Back at Leisure World digesting dinner. The highlight for me, of course, is seeing my son. He looks just like a college student these days, which is pretty cool with me. I've missed out on a lot of the normal things people experience in life, but my son more than makes up for that. I wouldn't trade him for any amound of normalcy. (I know that doesn't sound quite right, but it's what I wanted to say.)
So I found out today that my family is going for some kind of record for number of members who can claim something really cheesy about themselves. There's the whole Leisure World thing, to begin with. And now we've got a politician (elected by two whole votes... the only two cast for that office), a game show host, a bodhran player, and an accordion playing calendar pinup girl. So I'm wondering is this just the beginning, or have we reached some kind of critical cheese mass or something? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: What are people's Christmas plans? From: katlaughing Date: 26 Dec 01 - 01:22 AM The BIG Cheese, is it, Carol? **BG** I'd say the accordion player and bodhran player are tops of all those. Our day was so much better than expected. Our youngest gave me the best present I could ever hope for: after several years of being estranged from two of my sisters and my brother, she spent the whole day with us and them and was congenial, polite, peeled all of the potatoes(!) and was generally the nice child I remember raising. Of course, it wasn't all just her, the three of them, my siblings, got along very well for a change, too. It actually was delightful; something we all remarked on throughout the day. We talked to all of the family members who weren't here and a few of our "invented" ones, as Spaw calls them. Best of all I have some great pictures, via email, of our twin grandsons, 3.5 years old, on the red tricylces we got them for Christmas and, of course, they look adorable. I guess it was pretty funny when they got up this morning. My daughter and her husband were still in bed, but heard them go look at the tree adn presents, then go back in their room and discuss who the presents belonged to; they didn't think they were for them and finally went to ask my daughter. Then one said he dind't want Santa coming in "his" house, that the presents were from "Daddy" and the other one started crying that he wanted Santa! They sorted it out and had a fine time riding around the dinky apt., then finally outside. It's a wonderful life, today proves it! Thanks, ya'll for another year of friendship, caring, love and music! luvyakat |

Subject: RE: BS: What are people's Christmas plans? From: DancingMom Date: 26 Dec 01 - 02:07 AM Husband and I both ended up working the 24th and the 25th. Spent Christmas Eve at my Mom's with the 4 kids and my brother. He and I consumed copious amounts of wine as we stuffed stockings. Christmas morning opened presents. I received a framed picture of my maternal grandparents taken around 1940 (she was 16, he was 20). Came home and went to work the evening shift. One of my patients, an elderly gentleman, had been in the hospital a month, and he said all he wanted for Christmas was a hot shower. So I gave him one, with the works: shampoo, foot rub, etc. His expressions made my Christmas. Love to all. Sharon |

I'm ESPECIALLY glad to be sitting here in my long johns at high noon on the 26th (yessssss!)with no particular place to go! My house is completely trashed, but I'm not inclined to do much about that, and I have this nice, hot cup of tea here beside me..... All the various gatherings, happenings, overlarge meals & overcopious quantities of alcohol have thankfully been accomplished and consumed, and a little peace & quiet sound very desirable indeed. I've reached that point where if I see one more yummy treat or bottle of wine I'll just be sick! The aftermath of the holidays always finds me thinking it would be a good idea to take a more Ghandi-esque approach---this phase usually lasts a bout a week ;~)! Happy holidays, everyone! |
