This land *is* your land, Woody; your songs live on. Katlaughing, no better company, to be sure. Happy 25th to your "Rue"; and happy 90th to our Woody, in the spirit of liberty, equality, and brotherhood.

Oops, here's that quote:

I love the this quote from one of Woody's old songbooks: "This song is Copyrighted in U.S., under Seal of Copyright # 154085, for a period of 28 years, and anybody caught singin it without our permission, will be mighty good friends of ourn, cause we don't give a dern. Publish it. Write it. Sing it. Swing to it. Yodel it. We wrote it, that's all we wanted to do."

I'm waiting for the Metroliner to carry me back to old Virginny. Well actually to the District of Columbia from whence, if all works as planned, my sweetie will drive me back to West Falls Church. Anyway, I saw the Woody Guthrie birthday party at CB's club in New York last night and it was really sensational. Everyone was great but let me pay special tribute to the duet of Anne Price and Toby Fagenson. I've heard Anne several times before and I've always enjoyed her "Baezesque" style. But as a team, Anne and that Toby fellow can really bowl you over. Another highlight was Joel Landy, who has rewritten some of Woody's songs to bring them up to date. For example, he took a song Woody wrote about atomic power and turned it into an anti-nuke song called "Kiss Your Ass Good Bye." One real surprise was Steve Suffet, taking out his harmonica and showing himself to be a disciple of the late Sonny Terry. Also, they brought out this white haired man who knew Woody when they were both seamen during World War II. I forget his name, but he told a story of him and Woody going to a bar together in Baltimore, and Woody drinking shots of liquor all night while he, the story teller, had only milk and apple pie because he was still too young to drink alcohol.
