Elvis is not the orginal king of rock and roll,

Bill Hailey is because he was the first to start it, if it wasn't for him you would never had got Elvis.

What's white stiff and get's women exicted?

Elvis presley.

Thankyou very much (mumble, mumble)

I agree with guest, There were people long before him that brought to the world Rock and Roll.

And Elvis was lucky because in the 50's Jerry Lee Lewis was in trouble because of his marriage to his cousin, Little Richard had decided to give up the music business, Carl Perkins was invovled in a road accindent so that just left Elvis to get in there with the song 'Heartbreak hotel' and the rest is history.

So he just got the break that he was looking for.

They say that if Carl Perkins never had the accident he would of been bigger than Elvis, however it wasn't to be.

So that's that.

He's lucky Buddy Holly got on that plane, or the world would be asking itself, "Elvis who???"

Well, some say Col. Parker had a lot to do with Elvis's becoming "The King." In any event, he was cuter than Perkins, Haley, Lewis, and Little Richard all put together. That probably was a big factor.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Elvis!!!!!

Tonight I was having dinner prior to a meetinf at a resturant called "Red, Hot and Blues" in Leesburg,, Va. and they play blues all the time. Goes nicely with the Memphis BBQ. Anyway, tonight they were playing a lot of old Elvis and I was hearin' stuff that I ain't heard in a long time. Elvis's blues. Yeah, blues. When Elvis came onto the scene he brought with him a lot of traditional blues. Was real nice hearing some of this stuff tonight.

Okay, I'll be the first to admit that Elvis's later stuff was just that...,stuff BUT he really came into rock 'n roll from the same place that gave us Lightnin' Hopkins and Chuck Barry...

I was going to have peanut butter and banana sandwiches for supper last night, but decided that I really had to have a pizza instead.

Elvis's story is interesting, and sad.

Once again, I'm with Clinton........Buddy was light years ahead of anyone in musicality alone. He was off into other realms while Elvis was curling his lip and asking for more mashed taters.

I'm too young to have been there, so I never understood all the fuss. There was some Elvis stuff that I liked, some that I thought was junk and a lot of it sounded pretty similar.

To me, Chuck Berry was Rock & Roll. I just read Bill Wyman's book, Rolling With The Stones. They were fans of Berry, Bo Diddley and Muddy Waters.

As one who has been to Graceland! I say no guys, Elvis IS King! History has proven that. Holly and Berry were far superior musicians and writers (in Elvis's case, not difficult) but they didn't have what Elvis had in spades: attitude, sex appeal and a really great voice.

The small NSW town of Parkes (pop. 9805 at 2001 Census) has a Gracelands Cafe which runs an Elvis Festival each year!! The town fills up with Elvis fans. The town also boasts an Elvis Museum, run by a bloke who has added Elvis to his name. I was listening to a interview with him 2 nights back & have forgotten all the details (I'm getting old - I knew lots of the symptoms on the Aging thread!) If I had been able to get on to Mudcat last night I would have remembered more details.

Today on NPR's "American Routes" (I think that's what I'm listening to) they're having a tribute to Elvis, featuring many of the songs that Elvis covered and the original versions of those songs. (E.g., "Blue Moon of Kentucky" by Elvis and by Bill Monroe, Carl Perkins's and Elvis's versions of "Blue Suede Shoes.")

Guest/Hound Dog- why for you made the King younger? I do believe that on the 8th he would have been 72 years old. 68 PLUS, OK?

The lack of true perspective regarding Elvis is depressing. The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Phil Ochs etc all thought Elvis was the greatest! And, surely, anyone with a pair of ears can hear how talented the guy was.

Sadly, many people don't seem to be able to remember further back than the 1970s or even 1960s, when Elvis was past his best. Like so many other great artists he peaked early (the Sun stuff was his best IMO).

And if your Aunt had balls, she'd be your Uncle!

He wasn't called "The King" because Buddy died, or he was better lookin than Carl, or he was whiter than Little Richard.

Nothing like him before, some pretty good imitations since, but no real contenders!

If someone comes along that changes the world as he did(with regards to entertainment), I hope I'm young enough to still boogie!

And on that note, I think I'll go listen to and watch my new Aloha From Hawaii double CD that my kid got me for Christmas(shit.....now there's another "King" I'll probably have to defend).
