Subject: RE: Lyr Req: John Parfit (from Martin Carthy) From: GUEST Date: 04 Nov 10 - 12:27 PM I'm intrigued by this song's lyrics which apparently relate to real events which took place in 1978 in Yorkshire. Is this true? It sounds more like it would have happened in 1778? How could no-one have been brought to justice? Cant find any mention of the case, which apparently enraged Flynn, anywhere. Thanks! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Martin Carthy 'John Parfit' From: GUEST,eastern washington Date: 24 Jan 03 - 03:29 PM Thank You! Thank You! That's more or less what I make it, although I heard something like : ...god is guard by earthly fence... in the final verse. Anyone have any knowledge about James Flynn, or where to find recordings or more songs by the gentleman? Robin |
Subject: Lyr Add: JOHN PARFIT (James Flynn) From: RolyH Date: 23 Jan 03 - 06:02 PM JOHN PARFIT (James Flynn) Parfit went out one cold dark night Walking the orchards, woods all round Thinking to find some game to eat Along the frosted ground He had the pheasant in the trees Innocent to the wild owl call Come the keepers stealthy tread His mean heart wrapped in gall The Duke of Norfolks gamekeeper Out to the woodland came Protecting life,so it be killed On a sporting day for fun He give chase to John Parfit All in the lonely copse that night Struggling beneath the bare branched trees In the foxes silent site A shot was fired and sad to tell Lay John Parfit on the ground For a moments rage and carelessness Precious blood flowed down In the light of dawn Brown leaves on mossy ground On a woodland place, where death has come Golden sun shone down The gamekeeper was told go free For it was said that there was no crime That a man was killed and stupidly Nobody seemed to mind The worlds a tattered and rusty place Drowning memories of countless men Gaurdians guard by earthly fence But who will guard the guardians? On Martin Carthy's 'Signs of Life,' he covers a song called John Parfit, written by somebody Flynn. (James?)... I still can't decipher the last few lines OR find out any information about other versions. Anyone know anything? Brilliant song, and utterly suited to M.C.'s style.. Thanks, EWA |
