Subject: RE: Rufus and the McGarrigles From: Bill Hahn//\\ Date: 07 Apr 04 - 07:05 PM Truly a wonderful experience. I had the pleasure of seeing the entire family a few years back at the (sadly gone) Bottom Line in NYC. The entire family and others of the extended "family" were there to perform in "The McCarrigle Hour" (the CD had just come out). What an evening it was---great music, banter, and all around fun. Subject: RE: Rufus and the McGarrigles From: Willie-O Date: 08 Apr 04 - 09:05 AM I've seen Kate and Anna several times over the years, but never with "wild child". Definite curiosity factor there. Pop singer and folkie mom and aunt...what do they end up playing? Please give us a report. W-O |
Subject: RE: Rufus and the McGarrigles From: akenaton Date: 29 May 04 - 12:53 PM Amazingly,to me ,there were quite a few empty seats at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, but still a good crowd. Performers were Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Rufus and Martha Wainwright, another singer Lily?? and one bass player. They got right into gear with their first song "Heart like a wheel",putting every body in a good mood. As the show went on things began to fall into place. Kate and Anna sang all the old favourites, but the famous emotion had been worn away by the years, leaving the feeling of two World weary old dears. Young martha was right up front during her numbers, singing from the heart,....A diva in the making, reminds me of Elisa C,a wee bit over powering but she's very young. The star of the show by a mile was the "child" Rufus,he of the angels voice and the devils eyes. His range and tone are truly exceptional, and his writing brilliant,if a bit too close for comfort, to the discerning listener The beauty of his voice, and the incisivness of his lyrics, cant quite shake off a feeling of unease about Rufus. How often can a performer shred his voice and soul before the audiance, to impress famous parents. I feel there is a lot of darkness around Rufus, but what a talent, and the audiance loved him. They called for three encores and would have stayed all night....So would I ...ake |
Subject: RE: Rufus and the McGarrigles From: Big Tim Date: 30 May 04 - 03:33 AM Ake, some very perceptive comments there. I saw them at same venue a few years ago- wonderful experience, wish I'd seen them in their prime though. |

Subject: RE: Rufus Wainwright and the McGarrigles From: Anonny Mouse Date: 09 Mar 06 - 09:17 PM As mentioned in a much more recent post, this household is, thanks to el-spouso-into the ENTIRE Wainwright/McGarrigle family--Kate, Anna, Loudon, Martha and ESPECIALLY Rufus! Sadly, we have missed in-concert duos with Rufus and Martha, but have seen Rufus several times-most recently a summer ago in concert with Ben Folds, and Guster in Pittsburgh. Rufus came on last--and it had already been 3 almost solid hours of music when he ended. The audience would've stayed another hour. Also, to his credit (IMHO) he was the ONLY one of the performers that evening to come out from where all the buses and limos were parked, meet and greet the fans, take pix with them, and sign autographs. My wife (who is no spring chicken--nor am I) was simply awed. It's tough living with an aged "teeny bopper," eh? Anyway, through her we are probably the penultimate "data base" for virtually anything related to the Wainwright family, or parents, sister, cousins. Sheesh. I must confess, having always been "into" music and artists, and my wife often looking at me like an alien, it has been a simply LIBERATING experience watching her become a real FAN of someone so talented...and from such a wondrous musical family heritage! |

Carter Date: 10 Mar 06 - 07:00 AM Saw them at The Albert Hall, their first concert in London. This was just after their first LP came out.An amazing evening, but that was way back then.I've got them on a video of the Transatlantic Sessions, with EmmyLou Harris, don't recall when that was made, but it was still good to see them.
