A long shot here; does anyone have a translation (French --> English)
for 'Petite Annonce' from the album 'La Vache Qui Pluere' by K&A McGarrigle ?

If you'd like to send me the French lyrics I'll translate them for you ... are they on the album? (brain death) If they are, I just have to remember where my copy of the album is to retrieve them.   Think it's in the car, which is why I haven't noticed if the lyrics are on the album as I'm always driving when listening!

Anne

Hi Anne,

Here are the lyrics en Francais. I've tried Altavista's BabelFish, but it tends to garble translations. Any help with this would be much appreciated ! ('La Vache' is one of my favorite K&A

Militaire
Débonnaire
Et surtout du savoir faire

Moi j'suis pas la fille du Roy Ou
bien ça va
Ou ça va pas
S'il vous plaît répondez-moi

Looking for the man who has a fiver-feet-three
I am not the duaghter of King Ou
Whether things go well, or don't
Please answer my call.

Qui annonce reçoit réponse
Qui demande a récompense
Qui annonce reçoit réponse
Qui demande a récompense
Who speaks out receives an answer
Who demands, is compensated
(x2)

Moi je n'ai que cinq pieds deux
Pourtant je ne suis pas boiteux
C'est tu trop
C'est tu trop peu
Répondez pour l'amour de Dieu

Me, I have only five-feet-two
But regardless, I'm not lame
It is you who are too much,
And you who are too littlle,
ANswer me, for God's sake.

J'en ai assez d'être seul chez-moi
Ç a crève le coeur et puis le foie
J'éloigne les chiens
J'effraie les chats
J'fais peur aux petits enfants

I've had enough of being home alone
It breaks the heart and then the soul.
I shoo away dogs and frighten cats
I'm afraid of small children.

Je ne fume que du bon tabac
J'aime les souris, j'hais les rats
À deux ou trois
Ou quatre pattes
Vilains ou bien aristocrates

I smoke only the best tobacco
I love smiles, and hate rats
Two or three or four-footed
Villains or aristocrats.

Cinq deux, cinq trois
OEil de verre, jambe de bois
Militaire
Débonnaire
Et surtout du savoir faire

Five-two, five-three
Glass eye, wooden leg
Military
Debonaire
And above all, with savoir faire.

(Rough, but it gets the idea).

Regards,

A

This is an approximation; my colloquial French is not what it used to be:

I'm looking for a man with five feet (three),
I am not a king's daughter,
That will either do, or not,
Please reply to me.

Whoever posts gets an answer,
Which is to be repaid.

Whoever posts gets an answer,
Which is to be repaid.

Me, I've only five feet (two),
Nevertheless, I don't limp,
That's too much,
That's too little,
For God's sake, reply.

Whoever posts gets an answer,
Which is to be repaid.

I have enough to along at home,
It breaks the heart and then the liver,
I make dogs run away,
I frighten cats,
I strike fear into small children.

I only smaoke good tobacco,
I love mice, but I hate rats,
On two or three
Or four paws,
Vagabonds or aristocrats.

Five two, five three,
Glass eye, wooden leg,
Soldier,
Sophisticate,
And always knowing what's what.

Adrianel is right -- it should be "love mice, hate rats", not "smiles". Ma faute.

Yes, and it's not the King Ou ... the Ou belongs with the next line, as Adrianel has it.

And, just to complete - Petite Annonce Amoureuse would translate as "Small Personal Ad".

Anne

Dear Anne
Could you translate me this song "A boire" by Anna McGarrigle to English?
That would be so great! Thank you, Pat

Je me regardai dans le glace si folle
Souriant, promenai mes souliers désaccordés
A boire, à boire

A drink, a drink
I asked him
IN the name of God
I begged him
I saw myself in the mirror so foolish
Smiling, walking in un-tuned shoes

So young, so young, each draught carries me away
By the frozen seas, spring searching for autumn

Coldly faithful the vision always changing
Divine companion, to my lips so harmoniously
