Thank G*d for Bert's credit card! I called a cleaning service AND a groundskeeping crew. they've polished and shined the entire building - including the recording studio on the third floor (when did we get a third floor? I thought those stairs led to the roof!) - and all the - ehem - "droppings" in the back garden have been composted.

There's a new tanker truck worth of Guiness ready to be tapped - and the entire Mudcat Blue Plate Special collection is lined up on the CD player - I'm just going to go into the padded room for a bit for some primal scream therapy - maybe for a few weeks.

If I'm not out by the weekend - send a nubile young female after me, please?

If Mmario's opened it I know THIS Tavern has a nice comfy jello pit and at least one pair of recliners, yay!

I'll have a double Rusty Nail, on Bert of course, and the blue recliner over here by the fire... it's chilly up here in the mountains!

I'll stand for the next round (on Bert again of course); who's thirsty?

And which NYF will volunteer to fetch Mmario in time to get to his next festival?

Well, I'd like to try that Guinness. But is there anyone behind the bar? But I don't like the sound of that tanker - Guinness comes in casks where I come from. (Grumble grumble mumble...)

Behind the bar hovers the ethereal figure of Mudcat Past, a generous, creative spirit with depth and heart, and many a story to share. With every drink slid across the polished bartop comes a whisper... and what is it? It's a dream-fragment made of the songs, scents, and stories of the auld Taverns... the creak of a ship, someone chanting "WOBH," a desert-island breeze, the ruffling fur of a Sugar Dog, the slap of knickers on a flagpole.....

With a faster-than-sight WHOOSH, a smallish tawny creature whips past MG's legs, setting him spinning in a sort of mad "hora" and laughing in glee. She dances him right past the gleaming puddle of puke and he lands SPLAT on a barstool.... and off she streaks into the night.....

I slipped into the Mudcat Tavern, boldly stepped up to the bar,
My steel trap mind could tell there was trouble not too far;
Then the whole place exploded, there were commies everywhere;
I said, "I'm from the CIA!" They didn't seem to care...

Just recycling an old song we used to sing during Peace Corps training back in the 1960's.

Cheerily,

Sage's feet crunch on the newly-raked gravel path as she walks onto the new patio and around to the side door. She unconsciously lifts the portrait as she passes and plops it back on the brass hook on the wall. She blinks. . . it looks like a duck is dragging a damp rag over a damp spot further on.

Mmario! How's you train him to do that? Several bystanders watch in awe as the duck makes a quick circle on the floor, rag in bill, then trots off down the hall to the back door.

I'll have a glass of red wine, please. And what's to eat around here? And someone, open that Southern door, see if it reaches Guam--maybe Naemanson wants to step in for a few. He sounds like he needs a break.

What'cha playing, Susan?

Anyone for a cranberry Jello Shot? They are disgusting but i hate to throw away good vodka.

Warm up a little sake for Brett and Wakana. Both could use a massage and a warm bubble bath too.

The door slowly creaks open and a dark-haired female tentatively peeks through the crack. No one seems to notice her, so with relief she slides onto a bar stool. "Is the kettle on? I'll have a cup of Yorkshire Gold tea- make it strong, with milk and sugar!"

While waiting for the brew to get to the right consistency (ten minutes should do it) she pulls out her concertina and plays along with the banjo and autoharp. "Margaret's waltz- I've only had this thing for a few months, but I can manage that!"

Mercury being definitely in retrograde (I checked) I need a place to hang out until it's safe to go back outside. Just don't look at the front fender of my car, ok?

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! I needed that!

(Whipping out a loaded .45 Colt's Revolver and placing it prominently on the bar):

Now here's the deal. You WILL be civil and even polite to one another whilst you're in here. Like a century ago, neither politics nor religion will be discussed EXCEPT in polite, civil ways that respect the other person's point of view and I suggest you don't bring 'em up at all. Anyone mentioning or even thinking of a living politician will be locked into the soundproof booth and forced to listen to accordion-accompanied rap music WITHOUT the benefit of likker or drugs.

(Violently stabbing a huge D-guard Bowie knife into the bar):

And if you got a name, even a Mudcat name, USE IT.

'Cuz if you violate any of these commandments, you gotta deal with me. And I'm the nastiest, meanest, most low-down drygulcher ever rode the coulees. I eat lightin' fer breakfast, earthquakes for lunch, and seven cases of dynamite fer dinner. I had my teeth pulled and replaced with railroad spikes. I've chawed up, beaten up, whomped, and hogtied more two legged skunks than Carter's got little liver pills. Whole graveyards are filled with the folks who crossed me. I drank raw nitroglycerine, spit into the sky, and made the craters on the Moon. When I was born they put on another shift at the distillery -- and I suckled drain cleanin' whiskey laced with battery acid. I don't shave and I don't pound in my whiskers and bite 'em off inside, neither -- I just take a block plane and a ramp to 'em. Ladies love me, grizzlies fear me, and I use a mountain lion as a pussycat on the hearth. Steer clear of me unless you're ready to have your Maker pick up the pieces of what used to be you!

A glass of milk, barmaid, please. And put a drop of Redbreast in it, please.

I am NOT the guest from the privy source.

I strongly believe in the "self serve buffet" style of management - I Know it's not in the best tradition of mudcat Tavern barkeeping - but since the patrons usually manage to trash the place sooner or later it helps deny responsibility. (something else I'm big on.)

So - is it the hot tub on the left and the jello pit on the right or vice versa?

Here, I have hold of a bottle of the vile black stuff-- hold your glasses steady enough to catch a bit....

Let's see (rummaging in fridge, ew, lots of moldy bits), it's Friday late afternoon, so now we need bar snacks and appetizers. What shall we make? (I think I made a crockpot once.) Hardi says the Brie I served him a few nights ago is actually Camembert so that's off... Caitrin's not here to make brownies...

He steps in quietly, unnoticed, and looks about him. He wears a long black cloak with a hood, which he removes and hangs on the a peg on the wall beside the door, revealing that he is dressed in doublet and hose, also black. Around his neck is a simple silver chain with a small pendant. Engraved thereon are the two classic masks: comedy and tragedy. Cleverly intertwined in the engraving is the lyre of Orpheus.

His jaw is firm and his nose is aquiline, but the upper part of his face is obscured by a black domino mask. His eyes, visible through the eye-holes in the mask, are dark, sharp, and ever searching. A slender but deadly-looking small-sword hangs at his side. The hilts of such swords, as worn by nobles and aristocrats, are often gold-bedecked and ornately jeweled, but the grip of this one is unadorned and obviously functional. Nevertheless, he does carry himself with an aristocratic bearing.

Slung across his back is a small guitar. Because of this, some might think that he is Figaro, but they would be mistaken. He is, however, closely related in spirit.

He swings the guitar off his back, sits down.   Reaching into the pouch at his belt, he removes his Intellitouch electronic tuner, clips it to the headstock of the guitar, and turns it on. Others are playing and he does not wish to disturb them, so he plays harmonics very softly and lightly, checks the tuner, makes a few adjustments. Satisfied, he turns the tuner off and returns it to his belt.

He quietly indicates his desire for a glass of red wine. He sits, observes, listens, and waits. Around his lips, a smile plays.

He was born with a gift for laughter and a sense that the world is mad.

Wafting up from between two loose floorboards, a tawny creature materializes and takes solid form. With a low, throaty giggle, The Sugar Dog (for she it is) slinks behind the TWEED'S-NOT-A-WEENIE JUKEBOX in the corner. It lights up, sparkling and showing a series of Donuel's painting on it's view-screen. She gives it a quick flick and it begins to play.

Moving to the timeless beat, she sits at the feet of the mysterious man with the Intellitouch Tuner, and looks up expectantly with a slight shimmy threatening to wag her tail. She's seen him before, tho not in this garb. "But," she's thinkin', "yuh knows cain't hardly fool a sugar dog, nohow."

I was reminded of a song today, as I meandered around a college campus for the first time in ages..."Silver in the Stubble"

"For the leaves are getting greener,
    And spring is on the way;
    Girls are getting prettier
    And younger every day."

...'nuff said

mercy...here I am--in a recliner, and not even WANTING to take a VT trip to the jello pit with 3 or 4 cute coeds. But I will take one more ESB while I contemplate the aging process...

(oh, Susan! Thanks for that link to the radio station!...I have Media Player Classic soothing me with blues and gospel...etc...as I type)

Ah, a Tavern: good.

Bad week all around? I realized I just got in from my THIRD movie this week. and had to leave an open mike last night; too sick to sing. I know I'm having a bad week when all that happens. Being a Virgo, however, I don't go for this retrograde Mercury stuff.

Lessee, I've got a   sack of homegrown tomatoes, homegrown basil to put on 'em, (regular, not that vile lemon basil) -- here is fresh mozzarella to slice and olive oil to dribble.

A BIG glassa water, ah, I see the cooler is over here.

I've got my new Sing Out! with the CD sampler here, and a new CD was in my PO Box today: *You Can't Save Everybody" -- and here are the 2 I got last Monday and haven't played yet. (and I wonder why I resort to plastic a week before payday.)

Yep, I've been better, and I've been worse ... this place is a comfort, though ...

After having finally given Seamus the slip, by presenting him with a tantalizing bone, still covered in meat (so sorry, but another 'catter who seemed to be wearing some kind of mask-walked out of the tavern at an opportune time and Ellenpoly just yelled-"that varmint sings off key-SIC EM"), and then ducked back into the tavern.

Uh oh, there's jacqui mighty cross with the look of "jello pit for you, gal" in her eyes. Ellenpoly wipes the last vestages of melted butter and lobster claw from her chin, makes a dash for the bar, and orders a drink for everyone in the house.

How she'll pay for it, she doesn't know. Can she do a trade?

MAG, your fixings sound pretty tempting. Barkeep, can we hot up the grill and rustle up some flatbread to go with it?

I'm feeling relaxed and MUCH better now- I feel like a song- join me on the chorus to The Chocolate song

Dozed off in the booth (NO! I do not snore!) and woke up in bed with a big yellow lab sound asleep on the floor. Wonder what he's been up to? At least he's back. I'd be in big trouble if I lost him. He has what appears to be a T-Rex thigh bone. Nasty thing. I'll toss it when his back is turned.

Someone frying bacon? It smells wonderful. I'll scramble some eggs - a dozen or two. Still some fresh tomatoes and basil on the bar. This will be nice.

The Dog slinks in, unsure of his new environment, following a scent that is getting old, but is still strong. He sits in the back and orders an ale while he considers the situation. Are the trad police here, or the PC police, or the hair trigger flame throwers? No? Does he dare reach into his sleeve for his instrument? Does it have too many holes, or too few octaves, or too true a scale? Would a few times thru Margaret's Waltz, or Juice of Barley, be received or rejected? What about the Braes of Mar, or maybe Big John? The ale arrives, and the mood improves. I try a few tunes, and the reception is mixed: Who are you, what are you, do you have consistent liberal opinions? Well, no. -- That will not do. -- My opinions do not need to be consistent to be valid. Another ale, another tune, may fix things up. I cannot tell where the scent leads from here-- I'll have to come back another time, its now time to go dancing. ( Dog slinks out )

Matt, I'm sorry about that. Remember last year when the velociraptors got in here (before they tragically became roadkill down the road a little way from the Mudcat Tavern)? They swished those claws and tails and gnashed a few chairs--I'm afraid yours might have been one of those. Rest assured we don't let velociraptors in any more, and there has been a strong movement to ban anything with a prehensile tail as well. Anyway. Find yourself a seat over on the lounge chairs near Jacqui and WYSIWYG (but maybe you want to go rinse your food off of the front of your shirt and pants first?). Whoa---wait--that crazy cat is back. She'll have you cleaned up in no time. . .

well - the aurochs fajitas ARE done -

you have your choice of traditional guacamole or the asian gaucamole

(Asian Guacomole: misx together

1 tablespoon sesame seed
1 lg Firm-ripe avacado - skinned, seeded and mashed
1 tablespoon Shredded pickled ginger
3 tablespoon Cider vinegar
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp wasabi powder (or 3/4 tsp prepared wasabi paste)

or for those on low fat - I've got a "mock-a-mole' made with a fresh green pea puree

I used a bunch of those sun-ripe tomatoes to make a Pico de gallo as well.

Dig in!

I might try some of that asian guacamole with mine - sounds interesting - and definitely some of the Pico de gallo as well.

Yum! didn't realise how hungry I was.

"Mmmm-mmm the Troll Script Robot!
Had a very nasty mouth!"

but I can't tell you anymore as this thread (now deleted without permission from the original poster) was deemed a personal attack, apparently not by Marty, but his friends who were not attacked themsleves in the thread, so now the words to the song are

SINGEN VERBOTEN!

although if attacked again, they have not been lost completely, so COULD be reposted, even if only by popular demand! Or you could write your own words, but you are not allowed to sing them!

My dad always said "Cook who boils potatos and peas in same pot very offensive cook." Much the same could be said of cook who does onions and leeks in same pot. As to shanties,

"Dead horse, dead horse, what brings you here,
Since you've been dead these twenty years,
The cook without a sign of grief,
Will boil you up and call yopu beef,
And we poor sailors standing here,
Must eat you though you taste so queer,
Though you've been dead these twenty years,
Dead horse, dead horse, what brings you here?"

Apart from what used to be served to sailors as a meat substitute,
Dead horse is what Australians call tomato sauce or Ketchup.
I propose to spread a spicy variety over the slap of pteranodon grilling on the forge. I will then pull the fifteen inch bowie knife out of the counter, slice up my slab with it and declare myself world dictator.

"I can hew boys, I can hack it out,
I can hew a steak without any doubt,
With this monster cleaver this lad's quite a star,
And he'll cut a dash at the Mudcat bar.

Well I like my whiskey,
And I like my beer,
I'll drink eighteen pints
And I'll not feel queer.
Actually I'm not,
Into alcohol,
I sing drinking songs,
But don't drink at 'ol"

Is that staek sizzling yet?

The outside roofed patio begins to fill up with really wet people who have made their way around through the garden gate that comes in from Florida. It's a warm and humid climate they've just left behind, so the dry cool air of the tavern will feel good. But someone had better run to closet, or through to the recovery ward, and get a few fluffy bathrobes. Ah, Nurse Ratched, I didn't have you in mind with that request. We want to make them feel welcome here, not further distress! You behave yourself if you're going to assist!

WOW - What a great weekend I just had...three days in Carvershire - the kingdom of Richard X and his brand new queen Isabelle of Andorra. (They eloped)

I got to hobknob with royals - got to sing at the Queen's Perogative all three mornings - twice solos, once with the Regal Royales** (more nobility!) - likewise twice got to solo and once again with the RR's at one of the minstrel's show - pinch hit when half the group was late for the village pub sing on the first day; wandered about with the RR's and did several numbers with them - sang a shanty for the boat swings; a love song for a pub wench; sang along with countless numbers at pub sings, pirate shanty sessions and various minstrels shows and music jams. (And they didn't even ask me to shut up!!)

**BTW - their CD 'pure snoods' has some incredible Lithuanian folk songs on it. I'm hoping I can get Jura to post about them or at least let me post what she has told me about them.

I think it comes with the Nature Scent Series free but if they have it, pick up the kitchen smells - gingerbread, roast beef, fresh baked bread - anything to kill the smell of freshly singed MMario.

While everyone is distracted I will replace half the water in the Jell-o pit with vodka. Tub o' Lime Jello Shots. This should be fun.

I had a long-legged lurcher dog,
I kept her in me keeping.
She'd flush out hare, on a moonlit night,
While the gamekeepers lie sleeping,
While the gamekeepers lie sleeping.

One day the policeman collared me,
To have me in his keeping.
Your brindle made a moonlit raid,
While the gamekeepers lay sleeping,
While the gamekeepers lay sleeping.

I seen her come out of the wood,
Across the fields a-speeding.
A partridge she had in her mouth,
While the gamekeepers lay sleeping,
While the gamekeepers lay sleeping.

But my dog's black and white you see,
So I'm not for your keeping.
He couldn't see, I'd brindled she,
While the gamekeepers lay sleeping,
While the gamekeepers lay sleeping.

One day his wife fell mortal ill,
He had to give up p'licing.
But I dropped one bird on his door each night,
While the gamekeepers lay sleeping,
While the gamekeepers lay sleeping.

Now she fared so well upon pheasant broth,
Her colour come back creeping.
So long as my bitch roamed abroad,
While the gamekeepers lay sleeping,
While the gamekeepers lay sleeping.

Now the bitch she pupped and I given him one,
To have in his own keeping.
Now he's left the force, and he roams wi' me,
While the gamekeepers lie sleeping,
While gamekeepers lie sleeping.

Ewwww--looks like the jello pit needs a shower chaser. I have one of those shepherd's crook shaped showers that goes on a hose end in the yard. If any of you wants to try it, it's in the back of the pickup out back. Water coming out of the hose is a refreshing warmish temperature still. . . and showering outside always feels to decadent! It's up to you if you're wearing anything or not. Might want to set the shower up over near the hedge.

[A bat quietly flies in and flits around the place, listening to the mingled singing, playing, chatting, and reciting. She flits here and there in a quest for the stray insect that slips out from the padded room, which has seen better repair. She goes out to the large and very strange pools of liquid and gell. First she takes an experimental sip at the gell ... "hmmm, vodka." Then she flies over to the other pool and takes a draft ... "Hmmm, chocolate? May wonders never cease!" She goes mad flitting back and forth in ecstatic indecision, then, exhausted and happy, goes back into the tavern and settles down in the rafters, listening and squeaking an occasional remark while grabbing up the odd mosquito or other insect.]

Ah! It was only a matter of time before we had bats in our belfry! (There have been bells ringing when folks swing around up there in the rafters in harness, right?)

Someone better keep an eye on the fe-lions. We don't need cats in the belfry also.

(We call our cats fe-lions because in their minds they're the greatest hunters on the planet, requiring a larger name than "cat.")

You gotta watch swinging around in the rafters. It's best left for cooler times of year, when the heat up there feels good. But you must be careful if there's a christmas tree up in the room--earlier tavern-goers have seen by happenstance that trees can be used like a trebuchet and send people and critters flying.

I saw a great name in an obit last week, and I'm thinking of taking it as a new Mudcat name or making a character for it-- Bonka! It's just too wonderful a name not to have it go on in the world any longer, and I think she was the last of the Bonka's, at least for her local family.

What would Bonka be like? Let's go ahead and make her up, and leave her semi-permanently in the Tavern.

Okay, but let's change her just enough that we're not appropriating someone else's persona. How about making her Bonka Beulah Bonka, or Bonka B. Bonka, of the BBB, of course.

Now, a big, BIG thing here is GOLF PACKAGES, where we bring in tourists with big bucks to fill up the local HOTELs with high rollers from the flatlands.

So I took another look to see Bonka's new neighborhood, and-- Oh no! Tomorrow is Talk Like a Golfer Day!

I bet our Bonka invited all those golfing boyfriends here to the Tavern. Oh well! Let's not tell 'em Bert's buying-- we can soak 'em for a wad for the Mudcat.

Things seem to be winding down again. But the setup is pretty good--the patio has the jello pit and the shower, the recovery ward is reachable through that coat closet down the hall (I'm sure there are external heaters for winter users), the trap door in the ceiling was noticed and the rafters are all ready for a very tall christmas/yule tree. I'm sure MMario left a lot of good food in the freezer back there. Maybe we can do a Halloween shindig? I should have a batch of smoked salmon to bring over by then. I still maintain that it isn't so much that the Tavern itself travels - but that ACCESS to it travels - though the point does seem moot. The Tavern Proper seems to exist in a multidimensional sub-space warp between universes.

The front door certainly appears to exist in multiple locations - though some of the other doors seem relatively stable. (Except the one labeled "Do Not Open" - that one opens onto 'Spaw's worst nightmares)

"Please, please," he begs, "Talisker. A lot of Talisker. Without ketchup or catsup."

Then, to no one in particular, he says, "Water, water, everywhere and all the boats did stop. I'm one of very few people who ever went on a cruise that came to an end because there was too much water around the boat."

And he weaves his weary way to chair and collapses into it.

A blonde in festive, skimpy Christmas garb saunters over to the recliner, and with one long black boot tips the occupant full back.

His jaw drops open as the visual and kinetic impact land simultaneously.

She whips an open bottle of Talisker off her silver salver, upturning it in one smooth movement above his gaping maw. The sound of gurgling is heard.... and then humming emanates from the kitchen.

"Ketchup chaser, dope!" says the blonde, and yes, it is our own Bonka B. Bonka, having her way with another man as is her wont.

Bonka, a champagne punch for Jacqui, here, please! Thank you so much!.

Bonka delivers the drinks quickly and very cheerfully with her silver salver, sharing a wink and a nod with the women (interpreted one way) and a wink and a nod for the men (perhaps interpreted somewhat differently). To save time, she has tucked Bert's credit card into the top of her black boot, since it won't fit into the bodice of her form-fitting red outfit.

Ah, he dreams, the gentle rain of Talisker from heaven. Delivered by a scantily clad, leggy blond in boots and furs, fortunately unlike those fantasized by Sacher-Masoch. Such a wonderful place. He dreams up a warm quilt in which to wrap himself, the pattern a combination of Pine Trees, Drunkard's Path, and a large and small Log Cabin (with the Mudcat logo in the center of the larger one) and realizes that it is called "Little Mudcat Tavern In The Big Woods (With The Little House Outback)."

Curled up, Taliskered, nourished in body and soul, wrapped in a warm quilt, cared for by beautiful women, he sleeps on, dreaming of riposte and remise and victories yet to come on the piste.

At least, he thinks, I wasn't robbed of my Virtue or Pearl of Great Price or my Innocence whilst I was snoozing. I don't mind sharing my quilt, but I'll be damned if I'll share more than that without my consent!

"Is it possible to get some breakfast, too? Perhaps an omelet?" he asks hesitantly.

Thanks, Joe. I did not want to post and bring the thread back to the top until you had taken some action but this has been in my thoughts all day, since opening SRS's PM telling me what had happened, and how she was addressing it.

I deeply regret my complete thoughtlessness in this matter, and I appreciate that SRS was on hand to address it promptly and tactfully.

I'd also like to emphasize that it is not SRS's fault she was drawn into this. In my thoughtlessness, I had confused one deceased person with another I had just read about, and I "reassured" SRS that what we were doing was all right. It wasn't-- no matter who Bonka was or what the circumstances of her passing were, or whether she had family or not. It was just wrong, and again, I apologize.

Anyone wishing to communicate with me privately about this can email me at motormice@hotmail.com.

Thanks, Susan. It was a day for soul-searching. It's amazing what makes it onto search engines, and how intent can be trumped by circumstance.

I'm glad the thread hasn't vanished--some of those ketchup recipes look mighty tempting!

The lady with the tray will have to chill out for a while, I think. I introduced her, independent of the name thing, because I was being silly and looking for someone we could send back behind the bar to help out on occasion to rattle MMario's cage (or to extricate people from the fixes we sometimes generate in cyberspace). Who knew the fix she'd be in.

Live and learn.

SRS

The silver haired information maven sidles in from the Northwest, tired of the thankless battle with weeds in the rose garden. She has brought a pound of ctnip, the kind you buy in bulk at the bag-it-yourself   market. Over her, she lays out lots of newspaper and sets out several little piles of it so that each kitty can have its own pile and not hog them all. There! that will mellow them out plenty.

Here is a sack of these roma tomatoes, which were SUPPOSED to be early cascades. (snarl! snarl! no more buying tomato starts from Freddie's.)

Now that the visit back East to see the aged parents is over, things are on the up.

Anybody want a TON of evening primrose seed? or newly divided irises?

Oh yeah, the guiness will be just fine. I have to sip it slowly.

Champagne all round please - on Bert's card, and even for the cats. Kendall got the results of his CAT scan and the cancer hasn't grown or spread. Now it looks like laser treatment will deal with the problem. This is one very relieved bunny, believe me!

That is SUCH good news, Jacqui. Let me propose a toast to himself's good health.
