Subject: smile songs
From: Kaleidoscope
Date: 17 Nov 98 - 10:02 AM

Hi,

I'm looking for words to songs about smiles, such as:

(It Isn’t Any Trouble Just to) S-M-I-L-E
Smile (Though Your Heart Is Aching)
(Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit-Bag and) Smile, Smile, Smile
(There Are) Smiles (That Make Us Happy….)

Either the whole song or even just choruses would be helpful.

Thanks to anyone who can help me.

Here's one K, just added to my gig bag (for my mom).....Tiger

Smiles
Lyrics by J. Will Callahan, Music by Lee S. Roberts
Copyright 1917 by Lee N. Roberts

Dearie, now I know
Just what makes me love you so,
Just what holds me and enfolds me,
In the golden glow;

Dearie, now I see
'Tis each smile so bright and free,
For life's sadness turns to gladness
When you smile on me.

    CHORUS (2x)
There are smiles that make us happy,
There are smiles that make us blue,
There are smiles that steal away the teardrops
As the sunbeams steal away the dew.

There are smiles that have a tender meaning
That the eyes of love alone may see,
And the smiles that fill my life with sunshine
Are the smiles that you give to me.

Dearie, when you smile
Ev'ry thing in life's worthwhile,
Love grows fonder as we wander
Down each magic mile;

Cheery melodies
Seem to float up on the breeze,
Doves are cooing while they're wooing
In the leafy trees.

    CHORUS (2x)

Subject: Lyr Add: ILLEGAL SMILE (John Prine)^^
From: Roger in Baltimore
Date: 17 Nov 98 - 07:54 PM

Kaleidoscope,

This song does not appear to be in the DT. It is the first song that comes to mind.

ILLEGAL SMILE
by John Prine
As recorded by John Prine on "John Prine" (1971)

1. When I woke up this morning, things were lookin' bad,
Seemed like total silence was the only friend I had,
A bowl of oatmeal tried to stare me down ... and won,
And it was twelve o'clock before I realized I was havin' ... no fun.

CHORUS: Ah, but fortunately I have the key to escape reality.
And you may see me tonight with an illegal smile.
It don't cost very much, but it lasts a long while.
Won't you please tell the man I didn't kill anyone,
No, I'm just tryin' to have me some fun.

2. Last time I checked my bankroll it was gettin' thin.
Sometimes it seems like the bottom is the only place I've been.
I chased a rainbow down a one-way street ... dead end.
And all my friends turned out to be insurance ... salesmen. CHORUS

3. Well, I sat down in my closet with all my overalls,
Tryin' to get away from all the ears inside my walls.
I dreamed the police heard everything I thought ... what then?
Well, I went to court and the judge's name was ... Hoffman .

CHORUS FOLLOWED BY:
Well done, hot-dog bun, my sister's a nun.

Posting of this song does not imply an endorsement of the product. It is simply a product of the 70's and somewhat dated.

"I'll Be All Smiles Tonight" does indeed mention smiling, but only through tears:

I'll be all smiles tonight, love
I'll be all smiles tonight
Though my heart may break tomorrow
I'll be all smiles tonight

Not, I think what the original poster was looking for. Or am I wrong? PETE

Here's one that my sister used to sing when she was in the Brownies. I forgot line 3; you'll have to improvise. The tune is "Dapple Gray."

[Brownie Smile Song]

There is something in my pocket
It belongs across my face
...
A very special place.

I know you couldn't guess it
If you guessed a long long while
So I'll take it out and put it on
It's a great, big Brownie Smile.

I keep it very close to me in a most convenient place.

well, I'm looking for a song [Second Story Window] that has something about smiles, at least in the chorus. Rita Coolidge sang it circa 1970-72 and the chorus was approx -

And you know who your friends are,
By looking in their eyes
You know so you SMILE (sung over 3 notes smi-i-ile)
But they never realise
What goes on inside every me and you
Keeps on a rolling on, keeps on a rolling on

If you have that please give it to the "who your friends are" thread

any songs about Mona Lisa?

Subject: Lyr Add: LET A SMILE BE YOUR UMBRELLA
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 24 Mar 24 - 05:53 PM

This was mentioned by Musicman on 21 Nov 98 - 03:39 AM. From the sheet music at Mississippi State University:

LET A SMILE BE YOUR UMBRELLA (ON A RAINY DAY)
Words by Irving Kahal and Francis Wheeler; music by Sammy Fain, ©1927.

1. Once I met a happy little bluebird.
I was just as blue as could be.
In a little while,
I began to smile,
When he sang this merry song to me:

CHORUS: “Just let a smile be your umbrella on a rainy, rainy day;
And if your sweetie cries, just tell her that a smile will always pay.
Whenever skies are gray, don’t worry or fret.
A smile will bring the sunshine and you’ll never get wet.
So let a smile be your umbrella on a rainy, rainy day.”

2. As I listened to that happy bluebird,
I soon learned his smart philosophy.
On my window sill,
He began to trill.
This is what he had to say to me: CHORUS

- - -
There are tons of recordings on the Internet Archive. Many of them are instrumentals, or they sing only the chorus. These are the ones that sing at least one verse:

Singer and Morton, on Oriole (1137 (a)), 1927. They sing the chorus, verse 1, chorus, bridge, chorus. This bridge does not appear in the sheet music:

Remember that a cheerful smile is always bound to win,
So never pull the shades down when the sun wants to come in.
A smile is just a slicker and it’s always still the line(?),
And if you wear it, you are sure to find
That ev’ry raindrop soon becomes a little pearl of joy,
And you’ll keep going along just like a whistling barefoot boy,
So pack up all your troubles in a great big pile (or “pipe”?) of bubbles,
And blow, blow, blow them all away

Dolly Kay and the University Six, on Diva (2581-G), 1928. She sings the first verse, chorus, bridge, plus this alternate chorus which is not in the sheet music:

Just let a smile be your umbrella on a rainy, rainy, ray-ray-rainy day.
Just pucker up your lips and whistle and your blues will pass away.
For never let your friends see you wear a frown,
’Cause one by one they’ll walk away and all turn you down,
So let a smile be your umbrella on a rainy, rainy day.

Jay C. Flippen and His Gang on Perfect (12406), 1928. He sings the first verse and chorus, plus the following alternate chorus:

Just let a smile be your umbrella on a rainy, rainy day.
Just pucker up your lips and yell a great big “Hip-hip-hip-hooray!”
Grab all your cares and pull them out by the roots.
Just wear a smile and throw away those old rubber boots
And let a smile be your umbrella on a rainy, rainy day.

Lee Morse and Her Blue Grass Boys, on Columbia (1303-D), 1928. She sings the first verse, chorus, second verse, second chorus, alternate chorus, as above.)

Bob Dylan, 1st stanza of (Sooner or Later) One of Us Must Know:

I didn’t mean to treat you so bad
You shouldn’t take it so personal
I didn’t mean to make you so sad
You just happened to be there, that’s all
When I saw you say “goodbye” to your friend and smile
I thought that it was well understood
That you’d be comin’ back in a little while
I didn’t know that you were sayin’ “goodbye” for good

Bob Dylan, Visions of Johanna:

Inside the museums, Infinity goes up on trial
Voices echo this is what salvation must be like after a while
But Mona Lisa musta had the highway blues
You can tell by the way she smiles
See the primitive wallflower freeze
When the jelly-faced women all sneeze
Hear the one with the mustache say, “Jeeze
I can’t find my knees”
Oh, jewels and binoculars hang from the head of the mule
But these visions of Johanna, they make it all seem so cruel

Subject: Lyr Add: SMILE DARN YA SMILE
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 25 Mar 24 - 03:40 PM

This song was featured in a 1931 Merrie Melodies cartoon which you can see on YouTube.

Lyrics from the sheet music at Baylor University:

SMILE, DARN YA, SMILE
Words by Charles O’Flynn & Jack Meskill; music by Max Rich.
Published by De Silva, Brown, and Henderson, Inc., 1931.

1. Let’s all get together with this one thought in mind:
Make this world a better, brighter place.
Tell each “Blue Nose” and “Joy Killer” you ever find:
“Hey there! Wipe that frown right off your face!”

CHORUS 1: Smile, darn ya, smile!
You know this old world is a great world after all.
Smile, darn ya, smile!
And right away watch “Lady Luck” pay you a call.
Things are never black as they are painted.
Time for you and joy to get acquainted.
Make life worth while.
Come on and smile, darn ya, smile!

2. What’s the use of walking in the shadows each day?
There’s no sense in looking for the rain.
Here’s the surest way to drive the shadows away:
Follow this advice; it’s mighty plain:

CHORUS 2: Smile, darn ya, smile!
For there is nothing that you cannot overcome.
Smile, darn ya, smile!
And where the clouds appear, you soon will find the sun.
Life is really only what you make it.
Stand right up and show them you can take it.
Make life worth while.
Come on and smile, darn ya, smile!

- - -
There are several recordings available but most have only the chorus sung. But I was able to find this one on the Internet Archive:
Ambrose and His Orchestra, on Electrola EG 2474, 1931.
and this one on Spotify:
Billy Cotton and His Band
that include the first verse.

Lyrics from the sheet music in the Levy collection at Johns Hopkins University:

I’LL NEVER SMILE AGAIN
Words and music by Ruth Lowe.

VERSE: You loved me in the past,
But our romance didn’t last.
You thrilled me with your kiss,
Darling; now I promise this:

CHORUS: I’ll never smile again, until I smile at you.
I’ll never laugh again; what good would it do?
For tears would fill my eyes; my heart would realize
That our romance is through.
I’ll never love again; I’m so in love with you.
I’ll never thrill again to somebody new.
Within my heart, I know I will never start
To smile again, until I smile at you.

There are lots of recordings of this song, but I didn’t find one where the verse was sung.

Chorus
Hush, hush, time to be sleeping
Hush, hush, dreams come a-creeping
Dreams of peace and of freedom
So smile in your sleep, bonny baby

Once our valleys were ringing
With songs of our children singing
But now sheep bleat till the evening
And shielings lie empty and broken
Hush, hush, time to be sleeping
Hush, hush, dreams come a-creeping
Dreams of peace and of freedom
So smile in your sleep, bonny baby

Where is our proud highland mettle
Our troops once so fierce in battle
Now stand, cowed, huddled like cattle
And wait to be shipped o'er the ocean
Hush, hush, time to be sleeping
Hush, hush, dreams come a-creeping
Dreams of peace and of freedom
So smile in your sleep, bonny baby

No use pleading or praying
For gone, gone is all hope of staying
Hush, hush, the anchor's a-weighing
Don't cry in your sleep, bonny baby

Subject: Lyr Add: NEVER SMILE AT A CROCODILE
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 27 Mar 24 - 02:14 PM

My transcription from the recording at the Internet Archive:

NEVER SMILE AT A CROCODILE
Words and music by Frank Churchill and Jack Lawrence, 1939—see note below.
As recorded by Paulette Sisters with Larry Clinton and His Orchestra, on Columbia 39953, 1953.

Never smile at a crocodile.
No, you can't get friendly with a crocodile.
Don't be taken in by his welcome grin.
He's imagining how well you'd fit within his skin.

Never smile at a crocodile.
Never tip your hat and stop to talk awhile.
Never run; walk away; say good-night, not good-day.
Clear the aisle and never smile at Mister Crocodile.

You may very well be well-bred—
Lots of etiquette in your head—
But there's always some special case,
Time or place to forget etiquette,
For instance:

If you meet a sad crocodile
Who looks bad and lonely and mild,
He’s just hungry; that you can bet.
It’s the time to forget etiquette.

Never smile at a crocodile.
No, you can't get friendly with a crocodile.
Don't be taken in by his welcome grin.
He's imagining how well you'd fit within his skin.

Never smile at a crocodile.
Never tip your hat and stop to talk awhile.
Don’t be rude; never mock; throw a kiss, not a rock.
Clear the aisle and never smile at Mister Crocodile.

Notes from Second Hand Songs:
“Written by Churchill and Lawrence for the Disney cartoon movie version of Peter Pan when it was first being developed. The movie was released more than ten years after Churchill's death, and only featured an instrumental version of the song. The version with lyrics was cut from the movie, but appeared on other releases around the same time.”

Keep on Smilin'
(Jack Virgil Jr. Hall; James Robert Hall; John David Anthony; Lewis Maxwell Ross; Maurice Richard Hirsch, aka Wet Willie*)

Well you say you got the blues,
You got holes in both of your shoes,
Yeah, you're feeling alone and confused,
You got to keep on smilin', just keep on smilin'.

Yeah, you're about to go insane,
Cause your woman's playing games,
And she says that you're to blame,
You got to keep on smilin', keep on smilin'.

Keep on smilin' through the rain, laughing at the pain,
Just going with the changes, til the sun comes out again,
Keep on smilin' through the rain, laughing at the pain,
Going with the changes, and just singing this refrain.

Singing in a honky tonk cafe,
Nobody's hearing what you play,
Yeah, they're too busy drinking anyway,
You got to keep on smilin', brother keep on smilin'.

Say you found a peace of land,
Gonna change from city boy to country man,
Yeah, try to build your life with your hands,
And just keep on smilin', keep on smilin'.

Keep on smilin' through the rain, laughing at the pain,
Going with the changes, keep on singing this refrain.

You're just hanging out in the local bar,
And you're wondering who the hell you are,
Are you a farmer, are you a star?

Smile on through the rain, laugh all through the pain,
Flow on with the changes til the sun comes out again,
Keep on smilin', smilin', yeah well, yeah well,
Keep on flowing, growing, rolling, yeah.”

Subject: Lyr Add: A SMILE WILL GO A LONG LONG WAY
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 03 Apr 24 - 03:14 PM

From the Sheet Music at the University of Maine:

A SMILE WILL GO A LONG, LONG WAY
Words and music by Benny Davis and Harry Akst.
Published by Waterson, Berlin & Snyder Co., New York, 1923.

1. Smiling faces always find a welcome.
That’s why ev’ryone should learn to smile.
Remember after all,
Your troubles may be small.
Here’s a little thought that’s worth your while:

CHORUS: When you’re blue, and kinda lonely too,
You’ll find a smile will go a long, long way.
Though you’re down, don’t sit around and frown.
A little smile will go a long, long way.
Never grieve; just try and make believe.
The sky is blue altho’ you know it’s grey.
Don’t you pine; it’s just a waste of time.
You’ll find a smile will go a long, long way.

2. Once I used to think my case was hopeless,
Never wore a smile the livelong day,
But since I learned to smile,
My life has been worth while.
That is just the reason why I say: CHORUS

Sheet music, lyrics, and other info can be found at Hymnary.org.

The Internet Archive has several recordings; the most entertaining is the one by Mainer’s Mountaineers, from 1937.

CARRY YOUR CROSS WITH A SMILE
Words by Ina Mae Duley Ogdon, 1916; music by Charles Hutchinson Gabriel.

1. Tho’ your heart may be heavy with sorrow and care,
You may others to gladness beguile,
If a face like the light of the morning you wear,
And carry your cross with a smile!

CHORUS: Carry your cross with a smile,
Carry your cross with a smile;
You may others from sadness to gladness beguile,
If you carry your cross with a smile!

2. Let the well by the wayside that flows unto all
Strength impart for each step of the mile;
Let your faith the great promises often recall,
And carry your cross with a smile! [CHORUS]

3. For the work that you faithfully, willingly do,
You shall reap a reward after while;
Only grace in your service can glorify you,
So carry your cross with a smile! [CHORUS]

We'll Meet Again, Vera Lynn:

Let's say goodbye with a smile, dear
Just for a while dear we must part
Don't let this parting upset you
I'll not forget you, sweetheart

We'll meet again
Don't know where
Don't know when
But I know we'll meet again some sunny day
Keep smiling through
Just like you always do
'Til the blue skies chase those dark clouds far away

From: Jim Dixon

POWDER YOUR FACE WITH SUNSHINE (SMILE! SMILE! SMILE!)
Words by Stanley Rochinski, music by Carmen Lombardo, 1948.

Powder your face with sunshine.
Put on a great big smile.
Make up your eyes with laughter.
Folks will be laughing with you in a little while.
Whistle a tune of gladness.
Gloom never was in style.
The future’s brighter
When hearts are lighter.
Smile! Smile! Smile!

Subject: Lyr Add: SMILE AND THE WORLD SMILES WITH YOU
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 05 Apr 24 - 03:21 PM

From the sheet music at Indiana University:

SMILE AND THE WORLD SMILES WITH YOU (WEEP AND YOU WEEP ALONE)
Words by Jimmie Lucas, music by Billy Frisch.
Published by Broadway Music Corp., New York, 1919.

1. Oh, don’t you remember your school days when a tot,
When teacher taught you right from wrong?
You failed in your lessons; you’d say that you forgot.
Then teacher would help you along,
And when the skies were cloudy, and all the kids looked blue,
She’d say, “Just think what Shakespeare said; here’s what you must do:”

CHORUS: Smile and the world smiles with you; weep and you weep alone.
Tho’ tears bring sadness, smiles will bring gladness.
Chase the gloom and brighten your home. (Don’t worry.)
Storm clouds have silver linings; sunshine comes sailing through.
So don’t frown or you will be lonely; smile and the world smiles with you.

2. Our school days are over; we’re grown up girls and boys
With love and happiness at stake.
When sorrows pursue you, and life has lost its joys,
Then you don’t know which road to take,
The straight road is the great road; its path will lead you right.
And if you’ll only follow it, a smile will be your light. CHORUS.

FARE THEE WELL COLD WINTER - Waterson Carthy    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9SwptACdRs
Fare thee well, cold winter and fare thee well, cold frost;
Nothing have I gained by thee but a false young girl at last.
But if she’s got another one and they both can agree,
She’s welcome to stay with him and think no more of me.

She wrote to me a letter to say that she was sad;
I quickly wrote the answer back to say that I were glad.
She may keep her paper and I will keep my time,
For what I’d have a true young girl I’d search the world around.

One day that I was walking all through the shady grove,
’Twas there I met my own true love, she handed me a rose.
Thinking I should keep it to never pass her by,
For what I’d have a true young girl I’d lay me down and die.

False deceitful young girls are easy to be found,
For what I’d have a true young girl I’d search this world around.
And if she’s got another one and they can’t both agree,
She’s welcome to stay with him and think no more of me.

I’ll be all smiles tonight, boys, I’ll be all smiles tonight
If my heart should break tomorrow I’ll be all smiles tonight.
