Subject: Lyr Add: pg13 'Hot Vagina' Trad. Bawdy Song
From: John M.
Date: 11 May 05 - 05:19 PM

Hello everyone,

If you are easily offended, please STOP READING.   This thread is for mature audiences only.  Please don't post "dreadful song" or "worst song written" as you are not helping.

Below is a traditional bawdy song titled:  "Hot Vagina" (recording)

              1.  Do you sing this song?
              2.  If yes, when and where did you learn it?
              3.  Would you be willing to sing it for folklore purposes over the phone?

Any help is appreciated.

Sincerely,

John Mehlberg

HOT VAGINA
(Tune - "I've Been Working On The Railroad")

Hot vagina for your breakfast,
Hot vagina for your lunch,
Hot vagina for your dinner,
Just munch, munch, munch, munch, munch.
It's so tasty and nutritious,
Bite-size and ready to eat,
Hot vagina for your breakfast
Hot vagina can't be beat.

Notes:   The "Hot Vagina" song started off as a parody of the of the Shredded Ralston Cereal jingle from the Tom Mix radio program.  (See Ed Cray's The Erotic Muse 2nd ed. pg. 290.)   The Cray fails to identify the tune for the jingle which is "When the Bloom is on the Sage".  This song was written by the "Happy Chappies" - Nat Vincent and Fred Howard in 1931.

The oldest recorded version is of Jim Hitchcock by Joe Hickerson in Oct 1962.  Jim recognized this as a parody of the Ralston Purina Song which he sings right after he sings "Hot Vagina".

The text above is transcribed from the singing of "Little Head" and was recorded on 9 Oct 2004.  Ivy T. on 19 Feb 2005 also sang this song to the "I've Been Working On the Railroad" tune.

Online texts universally list the tune for "Hot Vagina" as "The Yellow Rose of Texas" but I have never encountered anyone who sings it to this tune.

Oh thanks you so much John for this wonderful "traditional" song. I'm sure lots of folkies will want to add this to their set lists. You sure are a wonderful contributor. Maybe "Martin Gibson" can play it at his bluegrass jam. Men like you are such wonderful contributors! And we have so many of them nowadays! Aren't we lucky. It's so much fun around here.

It is only okay when she talks about men, not when men talk about women. As to so much fun around here, she has done more to kill that than Martin Gibson.

Have to admit, John, I was a bit confused as to your intentions when I saw the titles to your threads. Then I visited your website. What a hoot to hear Grandfather Paton singing "dirty" songs. And Charley Noble and several ladies as well. "Hot Vagina" will never make it to my list of favorites but there are a few I will attempt for the "right" audience. Keep up the good work.

Gargoyle posted a different version to the tune of The Yellow Rose of Texas in this post in the Rugby Songs thread. Pasted from there:

HOT VAGINA
Tune - Yellow Rose of Texas

Hot vagina for your breakfast,
Hot vagina for your lunch,
Hot vagina for your dinner,
Just munch, munch, munch, munch, munch.
It's so speedy and nutritious,
Bite-size and ready to eat,
So take a tip, go eat your mom;
Hot vagina can't be beat.

well, I have my answer the question I asked earlier(and got no answer to)....he is not going to temper his titles. (Though I 'suspect' this one was chosen specifically for its borderline case, to test the waters, as it were.) Is 'vagina' a naughty word? Is is naughty enough when paired with 'hot'? Erudite minds want to know.

I do wonder just how many OTHER cute little items we will be favored with as the research continues.

I gotta tell you, John, if you keep posting 'em, we'll keep commenting on the practice.

Oh, by the way...no, I do NOT sing that one.

Mr. Mahlburg - ignore the Harpies they are just catterwailing-in-the-wind.

However, I do take serious offence when you add Trad.

There are wonderful places for "Bawdy Songs" - thankfully, Mr. Greenhouse is an effectionado (or I would not have hung around.)

Thankfully, you ARE crediting the sources ... and valid, wonderful, sources they are too. But, labeling them TRAD????

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Carry on soldier - you are doing good work.

Ms. Blissfully Ignorant, m'am, I am not aware of ANYONE finding 'vagina' offensive. I certainly hope my post did not indicate that *I* did...but I do inquire, in a slightly bemused manner, whether you understood the point of my remarks.

I am quite happy to have bawdy lyrics posted, discussed and available to one and all.....but NOT in such a way as to set off 'taste' alarms in various filtering programs that would prevent more people from getting INTO Mudcat than would possibly respond to John's 'research' questions.

(pretty scary, too, when I find myself agreeing with gargoyle (and others) about the 'trad' nature of the current set of 'research' threads. There are GOOD, well-crafted, thoroughly traditional bawdy songs out there...but perhaps John Mehlberg feels that he has enough data on those, and so has nothing else to 'research' but the purile, raunchy, dumb, juvenile, insipid, tasteless stuff bellowed by drunken Rugby players and college jocks over a keg of Budweiser......did I mention juvenile?...oh, yes, I see I did...*grin*)

Well, quite apart from my personal opinions about 'taste', I **STILL** would not curtail Mr. Mehlberg's right to collect and research the stuff to his heart's content. If he wants to write a 27 volume tome on the subject, more power to him!......... ONE MORE TIME....I am ONLY interested in how his thread TITLES affect this forum and its acceptance and availability, and I will continue to make that point as long as folks keep setting up straw men to shoot down.

I first encountered and learned this song from "The Dirty Songbook" which I purchased in a "dirty" bookstore in Boston back in the late 60s. Only recently did I learn that the book was by Ed Cray, writing under a nom de plume.

The correct song title for the tune is "When It's Roundup Time in Texas," and was the basis of the Tom MIx radio theme song. BTW, it was not then Ralston-Purina, but just Ralston, a hot cereal that was pushed from time to time in some of the programs.

Keep up the good work, John and let the prudes and puritans be buggered. Those who question the "traditional" aspects of your work have no knowledge of Burns or D'Urfey.

I really will find the time to call you with a couple songs -- Tom Hall

The original "Hot Ralston Song" was pretty sexy in its way. I'll post the traditional lyrics as I remember them from back when my brother and I used to hear them over the family RADIO:

Hot Ralston for your breakfast,
Hot Ralston for your lunch,
Hot Ralston for your dinner,
Hot Ralston for your brunch;
It's delicious, it's nutritious,
Bite-sized and ready to eat,
Take a tip from Tom,
Go tell your Mom,
"Hot Ralston can't be beat!"

Always loved the internal rhyming, which is sadly missing from the vagina versions that John and Jeri posted. Maybe their informants had memory problems.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

I haven't weighed in on this argument yet, but I'm on the side of John here and elsewhere, keep em coming, as it were! No censorship of sings or titles needed. Prudery be damned. They're only words, and I think it's long past time we stop 'accomodating' the easily offended. They don;t have to read or open the thread, let alone comment on it.

Obvioulsy in this case the lyrics have been changed each time to fit the various melodies, but it would be easy enough to take the Hot Ralston lyrics and sing some altered Hot Vagina lyrics (none of the above postings) to that tune. It should also be easy to find the tune somewhere if that is what you need someone to sing to you. Garrison Keillor has sung it various times on PHC, for instance.

Everyone, this is from the Fife Folklore Archives:

Some of the items in the collections may be sensitive and may or may not be the opinions, ideas, or beliefs of the students who collected the materials or their informants.... While the collections contain materials that may be considered prejudiced, stereotyped, or offensive, it should be remembered that the folk data is an important resource in the study of contemporary and past cultures.

Harpygirl,
I had one woman contact me to thank me for putting "Hot Vagina" on my website.  She said she learned it from my site to sing it to her boyfriend.   I say *she* was happy ... as long as her boyfriend listened and complied with the songs lyrics.

Bill_D, no I will not expurgate the title of a song.  If the song is 'Run, Nigger, Run', then that is what I will place in the title the song thread that discusses that song.   Joe says that there is still some technical work being done to "elegantly" find in a "solution" that allow people who are filtered to access the forum.   I am still waiting.

GUEST,.gargoyle, this song is traditional amongst several groups: rugby players, hash house harriers, air force fighter pilots, college fraternities and soccer players.

Do you disagree that this song is traditional amongst those groups

Bill_D, thanks for correctly identifying the CONTEXT of most of my bawdy songs:

purile, raunchy, dumb, juvenile, insipid, tasteless stuff bellowed by drunken Rugby players and college jocks over a keg of Budweiser......

I don't expect you to understand or appreciate Latvian folksongs but to the extent they are sung in Latvia and by Latvians then they are the traditional songs of Latvians.

I also don't expect you to understand or appreciate rugby, hash house harrier, air force pilot and fraternity folksongs.  But to the extent they are sung by ruggers, hounds & harriets, pilots and 'brothers' then they are traditional songs of these groups.

Blissfully Ignorant, the phrase "Hot Vagina", except for instances of this song, is a porno keyword.  Here is google search which shows the prevalence of the "hot vagina" phrase on porn sites.

curmudgeon, No the title -- as actually penned by Nat Vincent and Fred Howard in 1931 -- is "When the Bloom is on the Sage".  The first line of the song "When it's roundup time in Texas" is what the song is often called and is usually added to the song title in parenthesis.

Charley Noble, I have actually heard three variations in the Ralston Cereal song.  I purchased a DVD of the Tom Mix radio programs from ebay.  Here is a version of this song August 1945:

SHREDDED RALSTON JINGLE  (recording)

Shredded Ralston for your breakfast
Starts the day off shining bright
Gives you lots of cowboy energy
With a flavor that's just right
It's delicious and nutritious
Bite size and ready to eat
Take a tip from Tom
Go and tell you mom
Shredded Ralston can't be beat.

John~

When you already know the song (as in this instance), what exactly are you seeking when you start one of these threads? Variants?

I have also noted your request that people sing to you over the phone, but I'm not sure what value these recordings would have in cases where you already have recorded renditions.

For what it's worth, I am not at all opposed to this effort, and generally find it amusing/bemusing. I usually look in hoping to find something really hilarious, but am usually a bit disappointed when I find something merely puerile and relatively unimaginative. (The only redeeming quality I see in this one is that it's a parody of an advertising jingle ~ only when I read to the point where I learned of the connection to Tom Mix and Ralston cereal did I first crack a smile over "Hot Vagina.")

I only have two recordings of this being sung to "I've Been Working on the Railroad" and only one recording of this sung to the "When the Bloom is on the Sage" tune. Finding *more* people who use these tunes would be better. Finding *when* they learned them is also my goal. I would love to talk with people who learned the song pre-1962 or in the 70s & 80s.

I am also looking for people who sing "Hot Vagina" to "Yellow Rose of Texas" as I have never met anyone who actually sings it to this tune.   I have also learned that sometimes there are many, many tunes for the same song... one doesn't know until one talks with people. Hence my request.

"Joe says that there is still some technical work being done to "elegantly" find in a "solution" that allow people who are filtered to access the forum.   I am still waiting. "

so am I...

So, what might be done, Joe and Jeff? John says HE will not compromise at all, despite pleas and alternate suggestions.

I note that a search for "hot vagina" on Google gives John's website as the first hit, with some of his 'sources' right after, so there is certainly no problem finding it for those who WISH to find it.

As for me, I shall follow John's suggestion and stop posting directly to threads started by John with explicit titles, in hopes that others will do the same and they will quickly drop off the landscape. If I feel I MUST make a comment, I will start a separate thread with a title that leaves no doubt as to the subject matter....just as John could do if he were willing to compromise.

I don't think John will mind a bit if no one posts to his Mudcat threads ~ his main concern seems to be soliciting direct responses, either singing phone calls or visits to his website.

The messages comprising the bulk of these threads are not reponses to John's requests, anyway. They're mostly arguments about whether or not, and/or how, they should be handled here at this site.

Words per se do not bother me. But many of the objecctions have been worthwhile and if John isn't willing to change just a bit over this issue, then screw him.

Some of the songs really are interesting. Different people appreciate different songs. These are really part of the folk tradition going back to sailors, cowboys, etc. Perhaps they should be looked at with an open mind. No one says that everyone has to like every song.
