Subject: BS: Noisy Electronic Devices-Why? From: Mr Happy Date: 20 Jul 05 - 09:09 PM Just been making cheese on toast. The toaster's non electronic [I guess in modern-speek, it's A Nalog]so it makes minimal noises. However, the microwave's electronic & 'dig it all?' & Oh so noisy! BLEEP_BLEEP etc! Why? Anyone else pissed off with these daft contraptions? Why's there no volume control?? |

Subject: RE: BS: Noisy Electronic Devices-Why? From: GUEST Date: 20 Jul 05 - 09:41 PM They make those sounds to upset the borderline people. Try a open flame i.e., gas stove and an iron skillet. The results will be so much more enjoyable. |

Subject: RE: BS: Noisy Electronic Devices-Why? From: CarolC Date: 20 Jul 05 - 10:11 PM Our microwave beeps even when we don't push anything on the number pad (when we're not even anywhere near it). And it also turns itself on from time to time. We have to unplug it when we're not using it so it doesn't keep beeping at us and so it doesn't set itself to 99 minutes and 99 seconds (as it seems to want to do), turn itself on, and burn the place down. |

Subject: RE: BS: Noisy Electronic Devices-Why? From: Mr Happy Date: 20 Jul 05 - 10:12 PM No-ooooooooooooo.......oooooooooooo! A dinosaur! I can do cheese on toast in about 3 mins with no dirty pans or mess. It's just the loud beeps as does me 'ead in! |

Subject: RE: BS: Noisy Electronic Devices-Why? From: jacqui.c Date: 20 Jul 05 - 10:23 PM WE have a clothes drier that emits a loud buzz about ten minutes before the cycle has finished. There is no way to turn it off! The machine does a great job but is very irritating. |

Subject: RE: BS: Noisy Electronic Devices-Why? From: JennyO Date: 20 Jul 05 - 10:27 PM My car beeps at me loudly if it thinks the petrol is getting low. It's supposed to mean there are 10 litres left, but sometimes it seems to be triggered off early. So even though I know I could get home easily before I need to buy petrol, the constant beep beep that you can't turn off is so irritating that I am bullied into stopping for petrol just to shut the thing up. I was stuck in traffic with it the other day, and couldn't get near a garage for half an hour :-( First time I heard it was just after I bought the car. I hadn't been warned, and it isn't mentioned in the owners handbook because it turns out I have the super deluxe version of the Ford Fairmont - the Ghia, with all the bells and whistles - literally! The sound reminds me of the baby magpies that come round here in spring with their parents, waiting to be fed and going yark yark yark all the time. So I call the car Maggie. Jenny |

Subject: RE: BS: Noisy Electronic Devices-Why? From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 20 Jul 05 - 10:33 PM The most annoying noisy electronic device is the one I'm sitting in front of right now. But it does, at least, have a volume adjustment with a mute option. Mine stays on "mute" unless there's something specific I want to listen to. I'll take five beeping microwaves and three obnoxious cell-phone ringtones over one "Welcome! You've got mail!" any day. |

Subject: RE: BS: Noisy Electronic Devices-Why? From: CarolC Date: 20 Jul 05 - 10:49 PM Bee-dubya-ell, that's not the fault of the computer... that's the fault of your ISP (AOfreakingL)! My computer never talks to me unless I tell it to. |

Subject: RE: BS: Noisy Electronic Devices-Why? From: Kaleea Date: 20 Jul 05 - 11:08 PM There is a switch for all noisy appliances--go to your fuse box & flip it. Some dryers buzz to let you know they're done, but will keep tumbling for a few minutes so the stuff won't wrinkle. Some dryers buzz a few minutes before the end of the cycle, that is to let you know that it's dry, but the cool down cycle is in effect so you won't burn your hands on the hot laundry--supposed to ward off evil wrinkles. If you don't want the car to "talk" aka beeps, simply remove the battery. (but it might not start after that) |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Noisy Electronic Devices-Why? From: JennyO Date: 20 Jul 05 - 11:54 PM simply remove the battery Ha ha - could be a slight disadvantage with that idea! Reminds me of a "handy hint" I heard once on a comedy show: "If you are always losing your remote control, simply tape it to the front of the TV, and you will always know where it is". Yeah but......... |

Subject: RE: BS: Noisy Electronic Devices-Why? From: freda underhill Date: 21 Jul 05 - 12:06 AM I have the opposite problem - I've just had some people staying, and they have turned off the sound on my computer. despite nosing around and trying a few things, i have no idea how to get it back on! |

Subject: RE: BS: Noisy Electronic Devices-Why? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 21 Jul 05 - 02:52 AM So if you are partially sighted or blind, how do you tell if your jacket potato is done if the microwave doesn't go 'ping'? These 'pings' have a function. I admit that some of them are bloody annoying - none more so than the watch alarm that a friend has that beeps periodically, but he is the only person in the room that cannot hear it, but think about it ... they're there for a reason - just because you do not require that extra auditory warning, doesn't mean others don't either. I wish our oil guage beeped at a certain level.... the light only comes on when it's practically empty; and in daylight, it's not the easiest thing to see. LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Noisy Electronic Devices-Why? From: MBSLynne Date: 21 Jul 05 - 07:47 AM It's not just the bleeps that get me. I'm a person who LOVES peace and quiet, but in almost any house at any time, if you stop and listen there is a variety of buzzes humms and moans from all sorts of electronic (or electrical, not sure of the difference)appliances. In the small hours of the night they drive me mad......I would dearly love to be able jut to turn them all off Love Lynne |

Subject: RE: BS: Noisy Electronic Devices-Why? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 21 Jul 05 - 10:01 PM It's the flashing lights of the clocks on electronic devices that get me..... beeps I can live with, flashing lights, not so good. You know the ones.. on the video or stereo... the power goes out, the clock stops. When the power comes back you need to reset the clock to stop the flashing.... but you can't find the remote... or the instructions and the damn thing won't stop flashing at you............ Our upstairs video (don't ask) has been flashing at me for months now, since a power outage in February. There's a piece of paper hanging out of the tape slot to cover it, but I know it's there...... lurking.... waiting to throw the paper out at odd times of the night........... LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Noisy Electronic Devices-Why? From: IvanB Date: 22 Jul 05 - 04:11 PM I gad a 1989 Olds Toronado with a touch screen panel for a lot of the controls. One thing it would do is start beeping at me when the fuel got down to about 1/4 tank. At first, I'd reach over and touch "Cancel" to turn it off, but I found that it'd immediately bring up the low fuel screen and beep again. So I tried not touching cancel. Then, in about 30 seconds, the screen would return to the standby status and immediately change back to the low fuel screen and beep. I quickly learned to keep at 1/2 tank or above in that car. Other than that, the touch screen functions were wonderful. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Noisy Electronic Devices-Why? From: JennyO Date: 23 Jul 05 - 10:37 AM Ha - another sufferer from the beeping car syndrome! My Fairmont doesn't even have a cancel function for that. After a while, the low fuel sign will come on too, but nothing will stop the thing beeping. Oh well - at least I'm never likely to run out of petrol. Yes, I try to keep at 1/2 tank or above, too. It also beeps at me if I turn the motor off and the headlights are still on, but that's a good reminder and easily solved. I don't mind that one. Jenny |

Subject: RE: BS: Noisy Electronic Devices-Why? From: HuwG Date: 23 Jul 05 - 01:52 PM The late comedian Dave Allen once had a talking Mercedes. As he got in, it said "Door open. Door open." He slammed the door. Another voice said, "Seat belt ! Seat belt !". Cursing, he fastened his seat belt. Yet another voice said, "Boot [trunk] open. Boot open." At that point he, er, voided the warranty. |
