Totally useless piece of information : this was James Bond's favorite song.

I can't remember in which of the Ian Fleming novels this was revealed, (it's almost 50 years since I read them) but he definitely loved this song.

Marianne, the mento song, was included on an RCA Camden lp recording, 1973, CAMS 652. I have a copy for the Mexican Market, "Calypso con Harry Belafonte."
Tracks are:
Lado 1
Marianne (cr. *Clara, Eaton)
Angelina (cr. Burgie, ASCAP
Jump Down, Spin Around (Cr. Walton, Luboff, Belafonte, Attaway)
Windin' Road (Cr. Clara, Eaton)
Delia's Gone (cr. Clara, Corman, Okum)
Lado 2
Buked and Scorned (cr. Clara, Belafonte, Corman)
Diamond Joe (cr. Clara, Belafonte)
Cocoanut Woman (cr. Clara, Belafonte, Lord Burgess)
Roll On, Buddy (cr. Clara, Wm. Eaton Jr.)
*CLARA- copyright register and publisher.

I haven't found a listing of this Camden re-issue for the U.S. market.

Well, I was wrong. I played the lp today and the "Marianne" is the other one (not sifting sand).

The lp seems to be selections from several albums, some with full orchestration. "Delia's Gone," with harmonica backing, is a haunting, memorable exception.
Glad I got the lp, though; Belafonte is a superb performer.

The James Bond novel is "Dr. No". Wikipedia has an entry for the song: "Reference is made to this song in Ian Fleming's novel Dr. No. The character Honey Rider is singing it when James Bond first meets her on the beach at Crab Key."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marianne_%28Terry_Gilkyson_song%29

I first learned this song from the Gilkyson/Easy Riders single and have been looking for more "racy" verses ever since reading Dr. No, until Joe pointed me to this thread. Unfortunately many of the lyrics above don't seem to scan to the pop version of the tune. There's some potential confusion because there are at least a couple of unrelated "Mary-Ann" songs. Also, the Gilkyson version isn't a true Calypso rhythm with the typical strong off-beat accents -- it's plain Rhumba rhythm -- so maybe the original Trinidad tune from the 1940's was somewhat different.

Still lots to discover here!

Here's a link to the Gilkinson 1950's 78:

The flip side was "Goodbye My Chiquita" (lyrics in the database), a totally different genre (trad. Western), similar plot to Marty Robbins' El Paso but much shorter! On YouTube:

Good singable tune, should be better known. Hopefully I'll post the tune to DT soon!

The fragment should read:

"All day, all night Miss Mary Ann
Down by the sea side and sifting sand.
All the little children join in the band.
All day, all night Miss Mary Ann."

The song is about a boat containing liquor that was run aground
and the people sifted sand to find the bottles.

Got this: Verse three is naming different Carnival characters:

. The whole island was on parade.
'Twas a royal masquerade.
De .Masq, de Drag (er?) (ga/gon?) and de cong,
The Indian .and the roché coming down

Here's the Marianne sifting sand song sung by Harry Belafonte & Julie Andrews.
