Subject: Harry Belafonte turns eighty (3/1 2007) From: Wolfgang Date: 01 Mar 07 - 05:42 AM His banana boat song was the first song I ever recollect singing on the street with other young kids in a strong adaption to the only language we knew: Kommt Mister Dallimann, Dallimann Banane. And we had no idea what it meant, but we did like the sound of it. Wolfgang |

Subject: RE: Harry Belafonte turns eighty (3/1 2007) From: Wyrd Sister Date: 01 Mar 07 - 05:00 PM Of course 'Wild Rover' fits well to the banananananana (sorry Nanny Ogg moment) boat song. Personally I remember 'Scarlet Ribbons'. Ah the joy of youth. Hope to catch you up Harry |
Subject: RE: Harry Belafonte turns eighty (3/1 2007) From: jacqui.c Date: 01 Mar 07 - 05:47 PM One of the earliest performers I can remember, and what songs! Scarlet Ribbons was always one of my faviurites and I still sing it occasionally. Happy Birthday to a great performer. |
Subject: RE: Harry Belafonte turns eighty (3/1 2007) From: Liz the Squeak Date: 01 Mar 07 - 07:15 PM He's exactly the same age as my dad would have been today... there's ironic for you - if he'd known, my dad would have told him to bugger off to his own country. It's a wonder I turned out as well as I did. Happy Birthday Harry! LTS |
Subject: RE: Harry Belafonte turns eighty (3/1 2007) From: frogprince Date: 01 Mar 07 - 07:51 PM I don't know if he's still singing now or not. A few years ago I stumbled onto him appearing on TV. He was talking for awhile when I tuned in, and it sounded like his voice was in total ruin. Then he sang, and somehow he could still do it beautifully. To me, one of the all-time appealling male voices. |
Subject: RE: Harry Belafonte turns eighty (3/1 2007) From: GUEST,Kiwi Date: 01 Mar 07 - 11:43 PM Saw him perform in Wellington in 1981. Right in the middle of our springbok tour demonstrations. He was very forthright on stage about racism and the tour. The most incredible entertainer I've ever seen. If he had invited the audience to stand on their heads at the end of the concert, I'm sure half of us would have tried. Listen to his "Jombie Jamboree" and "Winding Roads" from his album at the Greek Theatre to get a true feeling of the depth of talent this man had and surely still has. Happy Birthday Harry |

Subject: RE: Harry Belafonte turns eighty (March 1 2007) From: keberoxu Date: 30 Jun 17 - 03:02 PM I have never forgotten his guest appearances on the Flip Wilson variety show on television, remember that show? He had sketches and things to do, including singing Harry Nilsson's "Coconut" with Flip Wilson's Geraldine (remember Geraldine?). I have forgotten the name of the little white-haired Brazilian guitarist, but said guitarist accompanied Belafonte, alone, for his singing spot (the serious one). This was a family show, I was a child, and we were lined up on the living room couch watching the television, with Belafonte crooning away: And I wonder if you know That I never understood That although you said you'd go Until you did I never thought you would And my mother, with threads of grey in her hair, sighed: "He doesn't look one year older...." |

I found a video biography of Belafonte on YouTube. I haven't had time to watche the whole thing, but the beginning was great:Does it play in Europe, or just in the USA? -Joe- |
