Subject: RE: Matty Groves From: Andy May Date: 13 Aug 97 - 09:31 AM Hmm - wish I'd looked here before last weekend. I spent much of Thursday afternoon sitting around _outside_ the Brasenose :( I must admit however, Thursday evening I spent down at the clubhouse next to the cricket pitch. Slightly tinny music, but much nicer beer. A. |
Subject: RE: Matty Groves From: Sam Hudson Date: 13 Aug 97 - 09:26 AM And, of course, the enthusiastic if inept rendition during the session in the Brasenose on Thursday afternoon... ...I am ashamed to admit to being among the culprits... |
Subject: RE: Matty Groves From: Andy May Date: 13 Aug 97 - 09:20 AM In fact we got Matty Groves twice - once done in the 'original version' by Vicki Clayton on Friday night (well - original with the exception of missing the Donald-Matty fight scene verse - :) Then the more usual 'heavy rock' version on Saturday. |
Subject: RE: Matty Groves From: Abi Kirk Date: 05 Aug 97 - 04:19 PM The lyrics and chords to the Fairport Convention version of "Mattie Groves" appear in the Fairport Convention Songbook, published by Woodworm Music, P.O.Box 37, Banbury, Oxon, OX16 8YN, England. Also includes many other Fairport favourites. Yes, I and my family will be at Cropredy this weekend - can't wait! Abi |
Subject: RE: Matty Groves From: Sam Hudson Date: 04 Aug 97 - 08:58 AM Slightly off-topic, but Fairport will undoubtedly be playing Matty Groves at Cropredy this weekend - anyone else going? See you in the Brasenose Thurs pm/Fri am! Regards Sam |
Subject: RE: Matty Groves From: Andy Geliher Date: 31 Jul 97 - 05:21 AM Alan, I think we might be at cross-purposes here. I was writing about the parody and it's title (fao DT) as there might be a copyright issue to consider. AndyG |
Subject: Lyr Add: MUSGRAVE (from Planxty) From: steve (folkie@trytel.com) Date: 31 Jul 97 - 04:17 AM MUSGRAVE as sung by Planxty
It came upon a holy day as many's in the year
She cast her eye on the little Musgrave as bright as the summer sun
I have loved you fair lady, full on and many's the day
I've a bower in Bucklesfordbury, it's my heart's delight
But standing by was the little footpage, from the lady's coach he ran
And me Lord Bernard will hear of this, oh weather he sink or swim
Me Lord Bernard, me Lord Bernard, you are a man of life
If this be true, me little footpage, this thing that you tell me
Go saddle me the black! he says, go saddle me the gray! (Instrumental--Irish pipes, vaguely horn-like)
I think I hear the hawk, he says, I think I hear the jay
Is not your hawk upon his perch? your steed his oats and hay?
How do like me bed he says, and how do you like me sheets?
It's well I like your bed he says and great it gives me pain
Rise up, rise up, me little Musgrave, rise up and then put on
There are two swords down by my side and dear they cost me purse! (Short instrumental -- flute or ?)
Then up and spoke Lord Bernard's wife from the bed whereon she lay
How do you like his cheeks, he cried, and how do you like his chin?
It's more I like his cheeks she cried, and more I want his chin
He's takin' out his long, long sword to strike the mortal blow
A grave! a grave! Lord Bernard cried, to put these lovers in (Some sort of instrumental)
It came upon a holy day as many's in the year (Then Planxty tops themselves with an INCREDIBLE little three-minute flute? in a sad/happy mode similar to... Faure's Pavanne pour un enfant defa...??) |
Subject: RE: Matty Groves From: Alan of Oz Date: 31 Jul 97 - 01:39 AM I should have said try this: Irish Mattie Groves Cheers, |
Subject: RE: Matty Groves From: Alan of Australia Date: 31 Jul 97 - 12:59 AM Set the filter to 90 days and search for "Irish Mattie Groves" Cheers, |
Subject: RE: Matty Groves From: Kiwi Date: 30 Jul 97 - 07:41 PM Andy, I've also seen it titled "Little Musgrave". |
Subject: RE: Matty Groves From: Andy Geliher Date: 30 Jul 97 - 09:28 AM DT - FYI: "Fatty Groves" Just for the record, this song, from the the Kipper Family, is in fact entitled Big Musgrave and the tune, is a significant variant of Fairport's. The Kipper Family songs usually "parody" both the words and music of their "targets", and cannot always be sung to the original tunes, though in this case the original metre remains unchanged. Subject: RE: Matty Groves From: Kevin Kelly Date: 30 Jul 97 - 09:00 AM "Mattie". Of course. I feel so dumb. Thank you for all your assistance. Kevin |
Subject: RE: Matty Groves From: LaMarca Date: 29 Jul 97 - 06:44 PM The Fairport Convention version is to a tune very similar to the American Old-time standard, "Shady Grove"; the DT has their tune in the file "Mattie Groves" (not Matty), but a different tune under "Fatty Groves". You can probably get a set of usable chords by looking up Shady Grove in a tune book. |
Subject: RE: Matty Groves From: Susan of DT Date: 29 Jul 97 - 06:18 PM We have Mattie Groves and a parody, Fatty Groves, both of which mention the Fairport convention. It plays the tune as well. |
Subject: Matty Groves From: kkelly@inforamp.net Date: 29 Jul 97 - 12:37 PM Does anyone have the chords/lyrics to Matty Groves as per Fairport Convention? I sure would appreciate them. Thank you Kevin Kelly kkelly@inforamp.net |
