We held one of our launches for one of the earlier volumes quite successfully at the Shakespeare.

I've just been informed that the first run is sold out. I'm pretty sure Clive will be ordering another run ASAP.

Dick, we already have a launch scheduled in Whitby, at the Festival, thanks. Wednesday a.m. at 10 in the Colosseum, and a promo concert in the Rifle Club on Thursday afternoon.

My copy arrived in California today, and it's such a treasure. Thank you, Steve and all.
This is Volume 7 of The Marrow Bones series of English Folk Songs. I count six on my shelf. Which one am I missing?
  • A Yorkshire Songster [folk songs collected in Yorkshire since the Second World War] (Gardham, 2025)
  • A Secret Stream (Vol 1) [Folk Songs collected from English Gypsies] (Gardham & Dow, 2021)
  • A Secret Stream (Vol. 2) [Folk Songs collected from the Gypsy and Travelling community] (Gardham & Dow, 2023)
  • Southern Songster [English Folk Songs from the Hammond and Gardiner Manuscripts] (Gardham, 2020)
  • Southern Harvest (The Constant Lovers & The Foggy Dew) [English Folk Songs from the Hammond and Gardiner Manuscripts] (Gardham/Purslow, 2017)
  • The Wanton Seed [English Folk Songs from the Hammond and Gardiner Manuscripts] (Douglas/Gardham/Purslow, 2017)

The Wanton Seed, and I have found a designer who is working for Clive and producing a printable copy of Marrowbones. We are looking for a suitable cover, wood cut lino print etc. like all the others. So if you find anything that might be in the right style let Clive know at the website or post a link here with Joe's permission.

Joe, you're missing the first in the series originally produced by EFDSS but Clive is working on a new edition which will almost be a facsimile of the EFDSS edition with new cover in the style of the Boutle editions, as Nick says.

Nick, I've sent Clive a possible cover print refashioned from a cut in the Pepys Collection. It shows the husband stood on the river bank with his wife splashing about in the river. I've had to doctor it somewhat but it's the best fit.

My first effort from a Marrow Bones broadside showed a woman beating her husband and Clive understandably didn't want to use this one.

However, if anyone has a better offer, of an appropriate cut from the 17th/18th century, we'd be glad of it.

Thanks, Steve. I suspected that Marrow Bones (Malcolm Douglas, Steve Gardham, Frank Purslow 2007) was the first in the series. I've got that one, too. This is a remarkable project, and I wanted to support it.
Can you tell us more about the Marrow Bones series of English Folk Songs? Marrow Bones was revised with new notes and commentaries by Malcolm Douglas and Steve Gardham and published by EFDSS in 2007. The revised Wanton Seed has the same credits, published by Boutle in 2015. Steve Gardham and Nick Dow are responsible for most or all of the others. But Steve, can you tell us more about who's doing what? What's next?
-Joe-

P.S. Did you get my suggestion about a U.S. publisher?

Hi Joe,
Okay, regarding Wanton Seed, was meant to be a follow-up to Marrow Bones and Malcolm did most of the work on correcting the scores and texts. However, he passed before the notes could be completed so I finished the book off complete with historic notes. Having sent it to EFDSS it sat on a shelf somewhere for several years until a friend of Malcolm's, Ron Day in Sheffield decided to get it done as a memorial to Malcolm and he found the publisher, Boutles. Having published this Ron then got together those of us interested in carrying on with the project, Nick, Graham Pratt and myself and then the next omnibus volume was produced. Nick then suggested we make a further selection from the Hammond-Gardiner Mss and that became Southern Songster. By then Graham had had to drop out and Nick brought in Cohen to do the setting and Nick took charge of the 2 Secret Songster volumes.

We have already started on a Lincolnshire volume which will include many from the out-of print Percy Grainger material, and songs collected more recently by Mo Ogg and Ruairidh Greig (Who contributed to the current volume). Carol Dawson of Folklincs, a wonderful folk entrepreneur/fiddler/teacher has offered to select the songs this time but Nick, Cohen and I will provide our usual contributions.

After that, Lancashire has been suggested, as there isn't an in-print collection in the same format.

A Yorkshire Songster has been reprinted. There will be plenty at Whitby, and they can be ordered on line from the Boutle Website.
Secret Stream 2 and Marrowbones will be available soon I'll do a separate thread for that.

Nick,

Could you please tell me the dimensions, and type of binding, for this and the other books in the series. The Francis Boutle website doesn't seem to provide such detail.

I'm interested in buy one, or possibly all, of these books but such things matter to me.

Many thanks,

Steve

23.4 cm x 15.5 cm and most vols are about 1.5 cm thick although Southern Harvest is considerably thicker.

That's a sneaky thing about the Marrowbones series. They're all the same size and have matching cover designs, so I have to have each volume as it comes out. The trouble is, the first volume was Marrow Bones (Malcolm Douglas, Steve Gardham, Frank Purslow) was published by EFDSS in 2007 with a different cover, and I bought that edition. A new edition will be published by Boutle with a matching cover, but can I really justify buying it just so the cover will match?
Ah, decisions, decisions.
But it's a wonderful series and I highly recommend it.
-Joe-

I think Clive is hoping to sell copies to the youngsters who weren't around when the first and second editions were issued. This new run will not contain anything fresh on the second edition (apart from the cover and an update to the acknowledgements). As for size the EFDSS edition is exactly the same size as the later volumes. I sent him a doctored 17th century woodcut for the cover but whether he's using it I don't yet know.

With Joe's help, I have made an enquiry to a publishing house in the US with a view to re-printing and distribution of the series. I had a very pleasant reply, so I hope Clive can make an agreement and expand our readership.
Onward and upward!

May I ask a question regarding the mp3s?

Are they someone singing each tune, someone playing it on piano, guitar or whatever, or are they recorded midi files?

If it's the latter, I'd personally find the original midi files far more useful but that's just me.

Many thanks,

Ed

Yes, you will get a one finger piano rendition. They are MP3 files. A bit big but I'll send them by We Transfer. They have proved very popular. If you PM me with an Email or if you prefer contact Clive I'll take it from there. It will take me all of three minutes so not a big job.
