Subject: RE: Obit: Cyril Tawney-RIP From: The Admiral Date: 22 Apr 05 - 09:55 AM His songs had the 'been there' touch as those of us who have been there will vouch. His warmth and humour came through in his performances and I always enjoyed being in his company but now after all these years that I'd wanted to get Cyril to Maidenhead FC - alas it's not to be. RIP Cyril, your songs will keep our memories warm. Tony and Pearl |
Subject: RE: Obit: Cyril Tawney-RIP From: GUEST,Gene Burton Date: 22 Apr 05 - 09:59 AM A great folk-singer, and one of THE greatest songwriters of the last century, in any genre. Alas I arrived on the folk scene a year or two too late ever to see him live, and now I never will. Damn. Well, I hope he's still singing now, wherever he is. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Cyril Tawney-RIP From: GUEST Date: 22 Apr 05 - 10:19 AM I recall him staying at my house, here in Darwin, Oz, back when the world was young. A gentleman in the very best sense of that word. His songs will live on. --Stewie. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Cyril Tawney-RIP From: Don(Wyziwyg)T Date: 22 Apr 05 - 11:01 AM Deepest condolences to you Rosemary, and to all the family. It is sure that we will not see his like again, neither will we ever forget him. His legacy is a world with more, and better, music than when he arrived on the scene. I have never forgotten his appearance at my "Dog & Gun Folk Club, back in the seventies, when he came down off the stage, to sit right in the middle of the audience. It was the most involving and intimate musical event any of us had ever enjoyed. God rest him and keep him, he's earned his repose. Don T. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Cyril Tawney-RIP From: concertina ceol Date: 22 Apr 05 - 11:31 AM Thank you for the fantastic songs, which are sung at nearly every session I attend, by old men, children and all in between. I'll have a tear in my eye singing Sammy's Bar tomorrow night. God bless |
Subject: RE: Obit: Cyril Tawney-RIP From: GUEST,|MikeofNorthumbria (off base) Date: 22 Apr 05 - 12:14 PM All the people who've been touched by Cyril's voice and his songs will miss him sadly. Those of us who were privileged to know him personally will miss him even more. In the music business it's only common sense to be nice to people who might be able to do you a favour someday. But Cyril was habitually nice to people from whom he could not expect to gain any advantage whatsoever, because that was just the way he was. He made the world a brighter place for many of us while he was here. We will not forget him. Wassail! |

Subject: RE: Obit: Cyril Tawney-RIP (21 April 2005) From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 22 Apr 05 - 01:12 PM Cyril was a giant. Fabulous song-writer an a warm original singer.I did a floor spot at Cyril's club in Plymouth in 1967, and I had a nice chat with him. I had always wondered who were Cyril's musical inspirations - remembering that he was writing songs before any obvioiusly role-models were around. I was amazed when he cited pop singer Guy Mitchell's material as being the inspiration for a number of his, Cyril's, well-known compositions. Anyway, whatever the inspiration, Cyril's great songs will be with us for a very long time. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Cyril Tawney-RIP (21 April 2005) From: MoorleyMan Date: 22 Apr 05 - 02:24 PM What sad news. Another tragic loss to swell this year's already hefty total. Cyril was such a natural nice guy, so warm and approachable, so unassuming. I'm sure I'll find an excuse to sing a few of his fine songs in memory over this coming weekend, but there will never be a substitute for hearing them sung by Cyril himself, he'll really be missed. Sincerest sympathies to Rosemary. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Cyril Tawney-RIP (21 April 2005) From: Fergie Date: 22 Apr 05 - 03:07 PM Cyril's excellent songs will be sung with affection by singers everywhere. Many of his songs have been embraced seamlessly into the tradition and this is the mark of Cyril's strenght as a songwriter. But outside his musical and poetic ability, Cyril was a wonderful man, his humility, his warmth, his friendliness and his wonderful sense of humour marked him out as an exceptional person. He will be sorely missed among his family, his friends and his many, many admirers. So long Cyril, I will sing a song for you and Rosemary tonight and I will drink a long toast to your memory Fergie Ar dheis Dé go raibh a ainm. |

Here is a little Cyril story which sums up how he was regarded - Following the move from Leeds to Exeter we urgently needed to contact Cyril and in desperation rang directory enquiries having gone through the rigmarole of a new number - not sure of the address etc - the gentleman in diectory enquiries when given the name said "Oh you mean Singing Cyril!" yes certainly I will find the number - and he did -but only after 10 minutes remembering where and when he had heard Cyril. Such is the measure of the man. Good night dear friend Jan and Ken |
